Ironically, O'Hare could just switch his business from selling air to selling trees. He practically owns Thneedville anyway, so he could just as easily impose a new tax or "Tree-planting service" and get crazy stupid rich as people buy into the hype. O'Hare gets richer and Thneedville is better off for it. This arguably creates a better message for the movie; big corporations don't need to see "going green" as a threat to their business, but rather can profit from it. By pioneering this new tree craze, O'Hare could have both made money and made the world a better place. And he would've very easily succeeded too, if he had just read the mood of the crowd and act like a changed man. Even if he didn't believe it himself, the PR would be immense. That move would've made this movie 100% better and would have given O'Hare a lot more depth.
In an interview with George R.R Martin (writer of Games of Thrones) he had told the interviewer about a character he was working on. This character was going to be his Magnus opus. A true gem in the series and was the ultimate and final antagonist to his series. On further inspection though, he notice the kind of monster he created; a horrible monster. The monster was his most deep and complex one yet something even the human mind couldn't comprehend. It haunted Martin's nightmares for what was an eternity for him, and he couldn't deal with it anymore. He sold the rights for the character to illumination where even they didn't know what to do with this hideous creature. They then agree to tone down the characters raw ethereal power to 0.000000001%. But when you were to see its true form, no one could ever withstand the cosmic horrors and despair. That character was Aloysius O'Hare.
Aloysius O'Hare has committed five crimes in this film. Here are the list of things he did: 1. Running a monopoly 2. Assault 3. Intimidation 4. Stalking x2 5. Trespassing
The odd thing is, of all the people in Thneedville, O’Hare was the only one who sold air when the air in the town wasn’t clean nor breathable. He sold fresh air that WAS breathable, yet he’s perceived as the villain of the movie just because he’s a businessman. A really good one at that.
It's not that he was selling air when the air wasn't breathable, it's that he was monopolizing air itself, which is a crime so weirdly heinous it's astonishing so few people are talking about it. He stops Ted from obtaining a tree, simply because he knows that even a single tree would render him obsolete - read; unable to make obscene amounts of money. This is even though more trees would make the land livable and not require the citizens of Thneedville to depend and rely entirely on plastics and fabrics - all O'Hare brand, of course - just to survive.

That man who is with him in the flashback is still around in the present but with white hair. "How Bad Can I Be" apparently spans over five years, but to assume the Once-ler is in his 20s then he does end up looking a little too old to be in his fifties.
i just realized that o'hare isn't really a bad dude, hes just really invested in his business to really care about anyone else, the whole plot of the movie is that he doesn't want any trees because if they do he wont sell anymore oxygen which will destroy his business, so he is an ultimate provider to all life in the city, and he wants and likes that power, and its not really hurting anyone, so everything is the way its supposed to be, even if its not the healthiest, he took advantage of the lack of trees and succeeded, anyone could've taken that power and he just happened to be the one to. he is literally just a really successful business man.
