  • Hobie Mirage Drive V2 Chain Cable Repair
If you have a failure where the braided cable pulls through/out of the chain end ferrule then here's a way you can repair it on your own. You will need some basic supplies that most DIYers already have (drill, bits, dremel, bits, vice). Now I did not have any silver bearing solder nor a micro torch, so that set me back $27. A new chain is $55 plus tax/shipping.

I wish they would just make the cable/fittings stronger. Change the gauge of braided wire that make the cables.

I'm not sure how strong solder is when it comes to a part that is occasionally getting some good torque applied to the joint, as in this case. I will likely skip that part and crimp two or three more times up the ferule to try and strengthen the mechanical joint.

    So how's it held up?

not good, pulled out after an hour of use...oh well, got a V1>V2/GT upgrade kit installed now. I think I needed better re-crimping in addition to the silver solder.

@@motleypixel I have had to replace two of these, JB Weld works the best. You put as mush WB weld in the inside of the fitting, put the wire back in the fitting, drill through the fitting and put a nail in it, wrapping the nail around the fitting, reapply the JB weld to the outside, and leave for 24 hours. I did this and it has held up so far, and had a different chain break on me, and did it to the other one as well.

@@motleypixel Great video, too bad it didn't hold. I have the same issue with my drive. Do you know what material the fitting (ferrule) is? Is it stainless steel 304 or 316; Also braided wire material? knowing this might lead to a different choice in solder?
      Thanks.

Hobie sucks. They charge $35 for this cable. Matt Miller is a dirty liar. Almost every hobie owner has cables break
