- Could Messi, Iniesta, Xavi and Villa have coped with a peak-Tony Pulis Stoke City team on a cold, wet Tuesday at the Bet365?
In the 'Tactics' episode, Peter Crouch reveals the Tottenham goalkeeper who shed a tear at Stoke City's 'aerial bombardment' and teams that didn't fancy a battle against a Tony Pulis side (usually Arsenal).

You say that but the closest thing to Stoke City in La Liga is Atletico Madrid. Especially a couple of years ago, dogged, rough, 10 men behind the ball, working as a unit, horrible to play against, hostile away Atmosphere in Madrid, Barcelona didn’t have many problems. Great teams, great football, along with great players find a way, wether it’s playing them at their own game or sitting behind the ball with ten men, they’ll always find a way to hurt you.
J's Supreme Stoke and athletico 🤣
Lee LFC nowadays it sounds like a joke I give you that but 5-6 years ago they played a similar way.
Atletico don’t play long balls, they’re actually try to close off spaces, Stoke don’t, i miss the old Stoke in the Premier League though, don’t know why they changed their style

You should upload the full videos of these podcasts. They are fantastic.
Agreed
That’s how you lose your entire podcast audience by making the whole podcast a free-to-watch UA-cam video
If you don't live in the UK, you can catch them on BeyondPod and (I imagine) most other podcast apps.
@@cr5678 why would they lose their audience if they gave the audience another way to consume the podcast? No-one is going to stop listening if they also upload them to UA-cam.
Manu Leach a podcast is much more difficult to listen to since it’s live and on another platform, meaning you have to be there at a specific time when they go live. Watching it on UA-cam is infinitely easier (as with TV shows), so if the entire thing was available on UA-cam as a video, who would want to listen live just as an audio podcast? Nobody. But podcasts can generate more money from sponsors than UA-cam ads, so it’s more beneficial for them to do it that way.
Uploading your entire content to a platform that’s infinitely better for the viewer will just result in every viewer going there, thus resulting in nobody listening live and thus no revenue. Basic economics of this.
It’s entirely the same as asking “why don’t you just upload your entire TV show to UA-cam instead of short clips” - because much less people would watch live then since there’s no benefit to doing so
Pretty sure Gomes did cry. He collided with his own player, Corluka and knocked him out cold. He was totally distressed. Kolo Toure was the worst at trying to defend the Delap throws. I think it was Rebrov who said he wanted to come off at Stoke after 15 minutes as couldn't handle it

Long time Stoke fan here. Little historical footnote. Stoke only ever played Barcelona once. In May 1969 in a testing friendly, to prep Barca for the European Cup Winners cup final, which was held one week after the Stoke game. Stoke were on their way back from an end of season jolly in Las Palmas, so may have been somewhat "relaxed" and several of the first team squad injured, left behind in the UK. It was a well fought game. At one point Stoke were three nil up. Half time was 1-3. Stoke edged the game out with the final score being 2-3. Barca also lost the cup final by the same 2-3 scoreline. They were defeated by Sovan Bratislava of Czechoslovakia, who had also beaten the mighty Athletico Dunfermline en roûte to the final. This was under the Stoke managership of a very different Tony. Tony Waddington. Also I believe it was a Thursday night in a very warm Nou Camp. The Barca fans clapped Stoke off the pitch at the end of the game. Old school football. 😀🌞

@64Fabby Nah. They would and were garbage vs any half decent European side.
The problem with Premier League is the environment is not friendly to players. Many players with great career in the continent flopped when they arrive in the UK. The weather is bad, Christmas games are tough, no break for Champions League, 3 tournaments going on at once. Most importantly, the focus on physical football: more running, rougher defenders and lenient referee broke many stars. Not many could adapt to this foreign world of football, especially at an older age. Of course, that doesn't mean anything when it comes to the Champions League.
El capitan Puyol had the strength of whole of the Stoke City back in the day!😤

The protoplan for Barcelona at Anfield 2019.
He's kind of right. Atleti was probably the only 'dirty' team in La Liga during the best of Simeone and they gave Barca a decent game sometimes
I get what he’s saying, but I think you’d have to be a better team than Pulis’ Stoke to do it. Maybe Athletico Madrid or Chelsea with Costa in.
absolute rubbish, the only effect kicking Messi ever has is gets him angry and he doesn't take it out on you he takes it out on your team and destroys you, see Real Madrid. La liga teams park the bus against Barca and still lose, Stoke would be pinned and pressed so hard they wouldn't get out their own half, id say Barca win 4-0
S Messi is good against all teams. All the best players in the world say he is a nightmare to play against.
S How does Messi become a ghost in big games? Top El Clasico scorer, fastest to 100 goals in the UCL. His favourite teams to score against are Real Madrid, Sevilla, Atletico Madrid and Arsenal statistically speaking.
No Messi wasn’t quiet in the Iceland game, I wonder if you actually watched it.
Yeah, look what happened when Andoni Goikoetxea "the Butcher from Bilbao" fauled (as in assaulted) Maradona 24 September 1983. Look that up and ask yourself what had happened to Messi if he been treated that way.
Oscar Svensson
Bilbao was actually decent compared to Stoke City and The butcher of Bilbao was legit trying to Injure Maradona. Messi has gotten kicked regularly in every game he has played in for a decade. Barcelona have played against teams that sit back with 10 men and play physical before. and so many of them had far better players as well. It's not a new way of playing against Barcelona. oh play 10 men and play physical and score from set prices. EASY. Messi and Suarez won't pass our defense of average defenders.
As a stoke fan he is a legend
That red against real make sence now.
No recommendation for Kevin Muscat🥴 Wtf, UA-cam!
Better teams have tried, stoke would be destroyed, Barca is good because they move the ball and make teams chase, City is doing the same in the EPL
Gomez was distraught that day. Corluka knocked him out didn't he? I can remember a Spurs player saying he wanted to be substituted that day as the whole atmopsphere was too much
Haha old Kevin would love that. He was brutal. Aussie International football is based on that bloke. Play hard play rough
Stoke at home back under pulis, different kind of beast.
Lol.

Merseyside is a sea side mine location, nothing more. Shit hole not scary.
I’m pretty sure crouch wasn’t at stoke when we made gomes cry
Gomes did cry. He fell to bits. Bizarre to watch.
COYMP
Surely he can’t actually believe stoke would have gave Barca a game
A friendly can always happen mate
In throwin Off side offence is not there.. At that Prime Rory Delap, Stoke are scary in the throwin even scarier than Corner kick...
Good vid
Another question: Will American soccer players could also be able to handle pressure in rainy Stoke in the middle of the night with Party Rock Anthem song by LMFAO playing on the bet365 stadium?
How is this even still a question. Far better teams in La Liga than Stoke ever were. Man City ran riot - Barca would kill it that people would say it’s not fair.
He's not saying "oh look at us we were top quality we'd have done what United couldn't and beaten Barcelona at Wembley". He was saying that back in the Pulis days the type of 11 men behind the ball anti-football that they played would have been incredibly frustrating for a team like Barcelona who were used to teams trying to play them at their own game, and they might have gotten a point out of it. Top 6 teams regularly dropped points at Stoke, including City, dunno how Hughes' away result last year has any bearing on the conversation.
Mark nobody is denying it wouldn't be frustrating, but it's no difference to the way teams play against city now, and they deal with that just fine. Anybody suggesting that Barcelona would struggle in the PL is in denial and a victim of the media machine.
@@Wahlrusberg Pulis' Stoke were dreadful vs Valencia at the Britannia.
Mark though if you actually watch la liga you can see a lot of teams are physical and do try to kick Barca and Messi off the park, just they fail most of the time.
Wow I dont think anyone has ever thought of these tactics to play barça I’m shocked Steven merchant err I mean crouch is a genius
Lol tbf when stoke were under Pulis particularly 11/12 theres never been a team like them regarding set pieces and style of play. They were soooooo good at being 'anti-football'. Certainly the best since early 90's in england, not sure any team in la liga have been the same
Stoke were a strong team under Pulis
Ive seen some shit on UA-cam, but Peter Crouch saying stoke would've given Barcelona a game is right up there lads. Well done
Didn't even give Valencia a game, how the fuck would they have fared vs Barca. What shit.
Thought this was Monreal from the thumbnail
Imagine not knowing Peter Crouch
Got a couple minute in and, that’s enough... waffling!
But La Liga does have their own version of Stoke and I'm not talking about Atletico. Athletic Bilbao are the most "english" of teams. Aritz Aduriz is their physical striker, they love set pieces and high balls. They kick Messi and foul him and they still don't win. Pepe, Ramos, Alonso, Arbeloa have all tried to kick, stamp and elbow Messi, but he gets up and scores again and again. Messi has literally had bleeding lips and black eyes and still destroyed opponents.
There was a period where Madrid and Jose Mourinho tried to be the rough thugs and they repeatedly finished the match with 10 men.
let's face it, Stoke would try their hardest and make life hard for Barcelona, but they would probably have 30% possession, only 3 chances on goal and probably lose 3-1.
Let the man speak

Did you actually bother to listen to what he said or are you just that ignorant you just commented after seeing the title?
@@Sebastian-lz8pu I listened to him. I can still say it's nonsense. Barca deal with this tactic every single week now. They occasionally draw. They VERY occasionally lose. It's certainly not some kind of guarded secret that nobody knows about.
And back in the day, at the height of their powers with Iniesta and Xavi in their prime, there's no fking way that STOKE would have presented a problem for them.
These pro players and former pro players have huge egos. They have to to get where they got in their careers. It doesn't make their ridiculous claims true, though.
@@agreen182
Mate, it's the traditional English way of playing, defence before attack. Big Spanish teams will never face that type of team because the Spanish have huge egos and think they're a;; the next Ronaldo. The lower level English teams are gritty and make it hard to get beat. You can spout all you want about these players, but in reality they never had to face, Burnley then Stoke week in week out. You can say, 'but they beat English teams.' Well the English teams they played were the top 6 English teams who all try to play good football who were just a level below back then. Now, the English teams like Liverpool and City are on that top level but that's not the point. By facing the top 6 English teams they weren't getting a real taste of traditional English football. And yes I don't think Messi could deal with it if he got pushed about.
Suburb I’m done talking to you. You’ve never seen a Spanish league game, that much is obvious. Atlético plays the EXACT STYLE YOURE TALKING ABOUT. And they have 100x more skill at doing so than any pissant English team could hope for.
The egos of the English football fan are hilarious. Your country sucks when it has to play internationally. Why is that, if all your teams are secretly tougher than the international giants? They should be winning the Europa league every year!
What a delusion. Cling to your fantasy, nobody cares. Hope your side avoided relegation this year.

Perhaps give messi a kick or two!! xD Like he's never gotten that in his entire career?
