- Join us for a Walk Around Thornton Village - the small village just off the A585, between the motorway network and the coast at Cleveleys/Fleetwood. Filmed on 15 December 2020.
The postal address of Thornton Cleveleys is two separate places. On a map it’s where you’ll find Marsh Mill windmill. Thornton Village, the one we walk around in this video, isn't far away, where the railway crossing is and the old railway station 'Thornton for Cleveleys'.
Thornton is another one of those Fylde Coast places where there are village shops and service businesses, much used by locals. It's a busy little spot, well used by people who live round and about.
Join us at the DIY Workshop on Victoria Road East, and walk towards the railway crossing, looked after by Poulton and Wyre Railway Society. Why don't you stop by and take a look?

I had friends now gone who used to live in Thornton it's a lovely place, i remember when Kwik save used to be the supermarket before the Co op , happy memories.

The windmill is much further left than you were pointing The road that passes the theatre / library curves round to the left leading to the mill

Thanks Jane for that. Your Thornton up date very interesting seeing the station car park now the site of a Coop and a row of houses.
i forget when i was walking down Victoria Road to catch the train (8:14) to Manchester Victoria it must have been around 1948 i know the Ribble buses turned round on that car park to go back to Cleaves.
Well I didn't know that the Coop site was a station car park! We learn something new every day :-)

I believe it is - couldn't tell you exactly which ones. But it's a very popular residential area.

"Everything you could possibly need" . . . well I must have missed the book shop and the stationers on your tour Jane :)
However, once I was in the DIY shop it would take a team of Cydesdale horses to get me out - there will be things in there that have my workshop's name on them! [an aside; Have you used Danish Oil on the mounts for your seaside residences?] I would be a while in the bric-a-brac store, there may be things in there that need a certain knowledge to identify. I have a braille typewriter purchased for 25p that the vendor had no clue about, when I told him its purpose he still only wanted 25p!

I like the relief windmill artwork, I have discovered that there used to be a windmill in Oxford Square in Blackpool but that there is no evidence of it after extensive redevelopment.
There is indeed a feasibility study for rail connection between Poulton and Fleetwood and I have seen pictures of the extensive work by the society formed to create and promote it. I feel it would be a valuable asset to many people to get to Fleetwood from the main line ralways, just as the East Lancashire Railway has provided a well used service. So much depends on how much the virus affects communities and how vibrant places can be kept. My family and mysel were working members of the Leeds and Middleton preserved railway years ago and running even a small line takes huge committment and incoming volunteers of all ages to run effectively. I wish this group all the very best. Who knows - we may yet see VFC taking a journey up the line with a live broadcast from the carriage or the footplate of a steam locomotive? Might be a stretch given the movement!

I cannot believe you got that braille typewriter for that price...but blinkin' good on you..and especially as you have/had blind friends? My grandad (Harry Mound) was a Station Guard at Miles Platting, (I'm pretty sure that's where,because he lived just down the line at Newton Heath, on the way into Manchester) I still have his picture in his uniform,and I was only about 6 when he died..Anyway sorry for waffling on Eryk, Just Hope You Have A Lovely Christmas..With Love!
@@kristinejames9812 Thank you Kristine for your very kind words and thank you for your response to my comment. What a lovely memory to have of your grandfather, I can just imagine that photograph. Taken in the era when a positon on the railway network was a "Job for Life", a phrase that seems to depict the impossible today. Like the Church of England and the Post Office the railway was a community locus.Not just transportation but part of the matrix forming the glue of Community.
The positions within a station commanded respect and I have no doubt Mr Mound was held in high regard. Worry not about waffling on Kristine, 'waffle' helps us in the same way as the great cartoonist Giles used to say that often the white space tells the story. The great essayists and collectors of local lore of times gone by relied on what might be called 'waffle' yet they wove it into a history that we can view as a tapestry of life. We can all nurture each other with interesting waffle. People live these days in a world where they suckle on the teat of sensationalism, neglecting what is special about much that is commonplace. I enjoy Haiku poetry yet the conversation over a country stile can be as rich as Shakespeare, it just takes an ear that is willing to be open to it.You are kind to allude to intelligence but I am a dim orb compared to my two sons, I am fortunate to have met some wonderful people and to have learned so much. I read when quite young, Kristine, that Lloyd George was reported as saying that he could hold a conversation with any person at all for at least 15 minutes. [presaging Warhole's 15 minutes of fame by a considerable period] It is the concatination of those 15 minutes over many decades that has given me a perspective on so much that leads me to be a free-thinker as my online name suggests. Humanity, sadly, largly prefers pigeon holes. Pidgeon holes rarely inspire.

@@visitfyldecoastIf only the fruit and veg shop was a hundred years old and was still there. I'm travelling back to late 60's early 70's, I knew a family on that road, who they where I have lost or maybe never knew their name exactly. Firstly I have to pick their house out and it wasn't far from some shops but was on the opposite side. I have memories of a closed undertaker's next door to their house and possibly a Police station further up on the opposite side.
