Peddars Way. Part Five - The Final Leg! Fring to Holme-Next-The-Sea.

  • In this video I complete the last section of the Peddars way, Norfolks finest long distance trail from Knettishall Heath on the Norfolk/Suffolk border to Holme-Next-The-Sea on the North Norfolk Coast, a distance of 46 miles. After a restful nights sleep in my hammock and a coffee, I press on towards the beckoning sea and views across the Wash and North Sea. Passing sleepy villages, bygone windmills, swaying sunflowers and bountiful bushes of blackberries, I stomp onwards towards the end point of this classic ancient drovers path. I hope you enjoy the video and thanks for watching!

    Simon, I greatly enjoyed your series on Peddars Way. I've walked it myself and love every field and hedgerow of that stretch of countryside. (I know the wonderful bit from Holme to near Massingham like the back of my hand.) Your videos brought back happy memories. I wish you all the best wherever you may roam. Give your beautiful dog a pat from me too.

    Thank you, Simon. My wife and I have just watched your Peddars Way walk. I'm planning to walk the Walsingham Pilgrim Trail from Bury St Edmund to Walsingham over six days in May next year and the route follows the Peddars Way between Great Cressingham and Castle Acre. Last year I came to England to walk the South West Coastal Path in Cornwall and the Two Moors Way in Devon. I love the English countryside, particularly the wild flowers and the bird song. I'm looking forward to seeing other walking videos on your channel. Leo in Melbourne.

    we did this section today mate and finished it! fantastic route but at times some of the peddars way was boring and very tedious, especially after castle acre. good to get to the coast. we passed the woodland where you camped and i knew it was there! seemed like the kinda place i'd expect you to pick, looked good. the gin trap inn was lovely. these vids you did have been really useful to me, thanks mate. Another great Video series beautifully laid out - thanks Simon!A couple of pointers for anyone not familiar with Norfolk (UK), there are plenty of large farming estates in this county, where Pheasant shooting takes place on the 'glorious 12th' of August each year, Estate Game Keepers rear pheasants in woodland - so if you nip into woodland for a bit of stealth camping and find pheasant pens, water dispensers, feeders etc - nip back out and try again further down the trail - Estate Game Keeper are apt to send you on your way none too gently if they find you near their beloved pheasants! Also as Simon has found Norfolk is predominantly light sandy land, and especially in North Norfolk not much in the way of streams and rivers. Farmers either grow drought tolerant crops (malting Barley being a famous Norfolk export) or use boreholes and lined resovoirs to irrigate Potato or Sugar Beet crops during the summer months, pumping and piping water across the land, the irrigation pipes usually drip or spray water at the joins, while the resovoirs are usually rectangular 100m X 50m raised above ground, so these are a ready water source if you look out for the irrigation spray as you take in the view across the fields... If all else fails there are plenty of houses along the Peddars Way just knock on the door and as Simon did, (politely) ask for water - not just the Canteen bottle but also your 2 or 3 litre water bladder to be filled as well!

    Love it Simon , brings back memories of when I was a youngster , I am from Manchester and I used to holiday over your way every year with my Nana and Grandad , Norfolk , the Broads , Great Yarmouth , Belton (Wild Duck Holiday Park) but my favourite place to be was always Potter Heigham , either a boat trip up the broads or just fishing next to the bridge , great memories and a beautiful place to be.

      Yes we do have some beautiful places around here too however Manchester is just too crammed now , too many housing projects and building in general, around the outskirts we have amazing places like Dovestones , the pennines , Pendle Hill isn’t too far north of us , in fact that’s an idea I think you and Andy should do a Halloween special this year on Pendle Hill see if you see the witches 😊

    Simon I have to say, I've seen you portage your canoe, and it weighs a lot more than your back pack, sooooo. Train more, Train better. Load your back pack with nothing but water and walk around your back yard, walk a mile down the road, train yourself to do more than you did here. I live in the desert southwest of America, and processing firewood or weight is not even on my list of concerns. Water is top of the list, the middle of the list, and the bottom of the list, with shelter somewhere in between. No this is not the first time I watched this, and water is a weight that moves from your pack to your body quite quickly, on a long walk. As always have fun and ATB Thanks for sharing these walks through Norfolk with us.

Necessitating either finishing in the dark or sleeping over in a b&b. Simon, thanks for this series of Peddars Way videos (I came across your channel today). I had planned on returning to the U.K. earlier in the year for a 3-month walking holiday, with 12 days of August taken up walking the Peddars Way, Norfolk Coast Path, and Angles Way, however due to health and family issues I had to cancel and return to NZ (and thought my walking holidays were over). After watching your 5 videos on the Peddars Way I see that it is very much how I envisaged, although I didn't expect the rolling hills toward the end. I now have a fierce hankering for that missed holiday (and walking in the U.K. in general), and am hoping to find a way to figure out some pain management techniques so I can return and luxuriate in those long-distance walking experiences once more (hopefully in 2025). Have you considered doing a video series of the Icknield Way, as it also links to the 3 trails above? Anyway, once again, thanks for posting these, and I'll be off to watch the Norfolk Coast Path series, followed by the Angles Way ones next. Cheers.

    When myself & a mate did the walk in 1996, we stopped at a cottage to ask if they minded us kipping in the barn next door, but they said no, but we were welcome to pitch the tent on their manicured lawn, they highly recommended the gin trap, so we stopped there for lunch the next day (very good it was too)

      Thanks Mike! Glad you enjoyed them - been a fun series to film! A lovely walk if you ever get the chance - perhaps not as hilly as you are used to! The channel is growing nicely - it’s like a plant, just keep watering it haha! I’m amazed at how many subs I’ve been gaining! Cheers mate! Simon

    Another one that took me back to the ATC Camp orienteering exercises down south...blistering hot sunshine and not a drop to drink. They didn't seem to put a lot of emphasis on the fluid side of things...Perhaps it was a mock up of a downed pilot with nothing but a map and a compass. All morning on the tar as well...bloody torture hahaha.
    Cracking video and looking forward to the next one...(...without the curried fish beverages 😁) Cheers 👍

    That's what I like about Multi-day trips Simon the little spots you find to tuck into. This one was a fine stealth camp. 'Entered into all around me' - yes, walking does that. The simple act of walking is meditative. I appreciate this walk as demonstrated on my own channel if interested. All the best with future walks. I enjoyed this series. All the best. Mark

    iv'e learnt 2 things for sure, take extra water, and where the Mcdonalds is, may well be stopping there on the way back.
    our plan is to cycle there and back in 2 days, probably a bit of a rush, but will be a good challenge, the results will be on youtube in a few weeks. i'll let you know when.

    I've enjoyed following this trail with you, Simon. I like how you were collecting water from your tarp overnight. I guess the Peddars Way isn't as well served for water taps like The Ridgeway and South Downs Way. All the best.

    • @simonablokeinthewoods
      @simonablokeinthewoods  6 років тому +1

      Thanks Olly! No, there are no official water points along the way - I was thinking as I walked along what a good idea it would be to have taps spaced along the route! I didn’t realise other trails had them! Cheers, Simon

    @1967AJB 6 років тому

    Well that was a lot of work to walk, film, and edit, but so worth it pal, really enjoyed them all.
    I’m not sure about the water filter though, I’ve got one of the ones like a two litre drinks bottle and I always feel the risk of cross contamination by getting dirty water in or around the mouth piece is quite high.
    But we’ll done on tackling all those hills, that Norfolk is renowned for, it was an amazing effort. I’ll wish you a good night from the billiard table which is the Pennines! :-)

    • @simonablokeinthewoods
      @simonablokeinthewoods  6 років тому +1

      Haha - yep them Norfolk mountains are the real deal! I didn’t realise we had hills here until I went to north Norfolk - 92m above sea level!! I’m taking oxygen next time......with the water!
      I’m going to do a review of that filter some time - feel I have to after they kindly sent me it to try! It’s got a sealed lid that protects the outflow area and drinking spout - meant to protect it from cross contamination we’ll see!!

    • @1967AJB
      @1967AJB 6 років тому

      Simon, a bloke in the woods
      92m, I’ve got ladders that tall!
      Yeah, mine has a cover too, but it’s the drips you might get from contaminated water while pouring or drinking from it that worries me, perhaps I’m too cautious. It would we interesting to use it in water with food colouring and see where they get to.

    Hey Simon, great series on the Peddars way, looks like a nice bike ride if the weather is mild, could make a nice gentle weekend trip, two nights out if you left mid afternoon Friday and back late Sunday. On a bike I’d imagine there’d be opportunities for a bit of off route exploring.
    Having watched your culinary videos on creamed horse radish, stinging nettles and rare grilled steak the thought occurred to me to COMBINE these with a nice fresh Tiger baguette. I thought that for best effect the fresh young nettle leaves of the early season would be ideal wilted fast in steam and added to the creamed horse radish, thin slices of the rare beef and Robert is your fathers Male sibling!👍🏻😂
    Hungry yet?😂😂😂

    • @simonablokeinthewoods
      @simonablokeinthewoods  6 років тому

      Oh man, that has made me hungry!! Steak and horseradish mmmmmmm!

    Nice one Simon, thanks for inviting us along on your adventure with you. Quick question if I may? If water was so scarce on this leg, why the coffee/diuretic? Is the addict that strong? 😉 (You can probably tell I'm not a coffee drinker!) 😄

    • @simonablokeinthewoods
      @simonablokeinthewoods  6 років тому +1

      Cheers Craig! Well, coffee is just good! Especially in the morning haha! To be honest, if things were critical and I was in real risk of dehydration, I’d have skipped the coffee for sure - that extra litre I scrounged saw me through! Lessons learnt though - more water next time - don’t rely on water sources! Cheers mate, Simon

    A request for your next footpath series: Bits of historical trivia for the areas you walk. Being an American, I'd find that particularly fascinating. Stuff like "In year xxxx, so-and-so and their regiment camped here during the battle of XYZ" or "Along this stretch, there used to be a such as such, where widget was invented". (That bit about the gunpowder storehouse was along the idea.)
    Also, have you thought of carrying along a metal detector? Would that be legal? If so, I can only imagine the fascinating things you would find.

    • @newlife155
      @newlife155 6 років тому +1

      Kimberly G. , I agree with your request and what I do is use Google to get insights on various places.. fills in the blanks .. you might say.

    • @simonablokeinthewoods
      @simonablokeinthewoods  6 років тому +1

      Thanks Kimberley - I’ll try to include a bit more information on places in the future - lots of history in the area! Unfortunately metal detecting is not allowed along the path without special permission - which is hard to get! Protects the history hidden in the ground. A good friend of mine is a detectorist, he’d love to have a hunt along there! Atb, Simon

    • @KimberlyGreen
      @KimberlyGreen 6 років тому

      That's what I suspected, regarding the metal detection legality. I'd imagine you can't swing a stick without hitting something historic in the UK. Any tidbits that you decide to share will be greatly appreciated. On a different tangent, have you ever considered coming to the US and hiking one of the 3 major long-distance hikes? [Continental Divide Trail aka CDT; Pacific Crest Trail aka PCT; Appalachian Trail aka AT]

    What kind of trees are those where you had your hammock? Poplar? Sorry. I'm part Ent, I guess. Oh, elm maybe?

      Haha! It’s a bit like middle earth around here - especially with the place names!
      They were beech trees, normally I steer clear of beech - they have a nasty habit of dropping limbs for no apparent reason (maybe they are Ents!!) I checked these two carefully and there wasn’t anything that was going to hurt me overhead! Atb, Simon
