    I fundamentally disagree with much of the politics of Jacob Rees-Mogg, however I respect him for at least having the humility to reach out to a variety of communities around the UK to gauge their views on issues. Not only is he adept in his English diction and eloquence, but he also comes across as a jolly fine fellow.

      Davy Jones-Locker - you were entitled to disagree with him. Like Rees-Mogg I am English too. And importantly I disagree with him. Which means Davy - I agree with you on that. I voted in the referendum on Europe to remain in it. One of the 16.1 million people who did. Out of the 33.5 million who did vote in it. I remind you however - there was another 13 million people who did not vote in this. The choice to do so was done on a 4% difference on a 72% turnout. And that IS a knife edge. Virtually!

      Tsk! I think that the point is still missed. A knife edge remains that knife edge! Narrow and still tight. Disagree with that point if you want! It cannot be denied. I hold to that point of view - unchanged. Won't be changing it.

    • @stephenfarthing485
      @stephenfarthing485 5 років тому

      FrostyCastle - you have concurred with that point of mine on this point that it is still considered as a distinct knife edge choice and on the point of my own disagreement with Jacob Rees-Mogg. It matters not if he is in government as a minor minister of Boris Johnson's cabinet. I hold my own disagreement with him and with the entirety of that government. For one simple reason that the whole thing lacks depth. And that means that I have figured out the whole equasion. And won't be backing up on this point of order. That said - the rest of the British Isles politics isn't much better - either! Equally lacking depth in this regard too.

    Thanks for sharing this. I'm so glad Scotland decided to stay in the UK, we're definitely better together. And Rees-Mogg is such a legend!

    • @Baresi-Unico-Capitano
      @Baresi-Unico-Capitano 7 років тому +8

      Legend for what reason, exactly? This pompous and upper class snob is pro zero hour contracts, is a stuck in the past monarchist, against same sex marriage and even supported donald trump when running for president. He is a former banker from a clearly rich and out of touch family. He has absolutely nothing in common with most British folk, stuck away in some totally one sided constituency of less than 70K.

    • @malpreece5008
      @malpreece5008 7 років тому +9

      You're entitled to your opinion, but I consider Rees-Mogg a legend for a number of reasons. He continuously stands up for the democratic process, he spoke out against the EU when most of his party were pro-remain, he recognises the importance of the United Kingdom, and as you say he is a monarchist, which it may surprise you to hear many other British people are. As far as his support for Trump is concerned it extends as far as he generally supports the Republican Party, and Trump is the current Republican president. Personally, I think Trump was the lesser of the evils, considering the alternative was Hillary Clinton! Also, having met Rees-Mogg I can confirm that he is extremely polite and courteous. He's not my MP, but he's obviously doing something right because not only was he re-elected in the recent General election, but he now has an overall majority in his constituency. So he obviously has something in common with all those 'British folk' who voted for him! So what if he was a banker? When you meet people do you take a dislike to them because of their profession? I'm from a less affluent part of the West Midlands, but I don't judge people according to their financial status, or because they have a different accent to me. That would just be ridiculous.

    • @Baresi-Unico-Capitano
      @Baresi-Unico-Capitano 7 років тому +4

      I wasn't judging him on his accent or how he speaks. In fact, that's probably the only thing that is likable about him from my point of view. Where he comes from in no way represents the rest of the UK and more importantly the issues that face the everyday working class people who's government just voted to keep underpaying.
      His job is indeed relevant when you take into account the fact that his father was a baron. A public school and oxford attending Mogg of course was going to vote against public sector workers getting a pay rise, because how could he possibly understand the plight of those who struggle day in day out just to put food on the table? Do you think he uses public transport? Do you think than when his kids are ill they get taken to an NHS hospital? Nonsense. He would be at a private surgery because he has grown up in money. Do you think he would stand up for social care workers? Would he ever end up in social care? No. He will end up retired in some country house / manor cared for by private workers.
      Trump being a lesser of an evil than clinton doesn't make him any better. But unless it comes to American foreign policy dragging the UK into shit, I have no interest in what the USA gets up to.
      And him being against the EU doesn't make him a 'legend' either. Personally, I didn't vote in the referendum and nor did I listen to the tory's tripe during the election. Instead of talking about the issues that affect everyday people, 99% of their regurgitated rhetoric was about the EU. That and punishing old people with the pension triple lock changes ultimately cost them a majority.
      As for the monarchy....I've already said my peace. Unless you benefit directly from the saxe coburg gotha family existing, nothing about it makes any sense to a person who sponsors to the 'demoractic process' or believes that we're all born equal.

    • @malpreece5008
      @malpreece5008 7 років тому +7

      Glad you like his accent, I do too! So you think he's a 'pompous upper class snob' because of his background? That seems quite prejudiced. I can only say that when I met him he was totally at ease, and a real gentlemen, and I'm not one of his peers. If he is uncomfortable associating with people whom he considers socially inferior he certainly doesn't show it. Have you seen C4's: 'Jacob Rees-Mogg in South Shields'? Its quite amusing, but I'm sure he would of refused to take part if he really was a snob. Criticise his policies by all means, but please try and refrain from ad hominem.
      I didn't say his job wasn't relevant, I only asked 'so what if he was a banker?' because you seemed to use the word 'banker' as if it was a pejorative term. His job is relevant, in that he was effective at it, and has brought certain skills from his previous profession into his political career. I know this is hard for socialists to grasp, but its extremely important for a government to be able to balance the books, and Rees-Mogg's financial experience places him in good stead in that respect. Also, just because someone comes from a wealthy background doesn't mean they won't help those who are less fortune than themselves. It would be absurd to suggest that someone can't help somebody else because they haven't walked in their shoes or experienced their plight. I'm not sure which public services Mogg does or does not use, although I strongly suspect he uses public transport. As someone who has lived in London, I can honestly say that everyone uses public transport in the capital at some point. In fact I think he's seen using public transport in that C4 video I mentioned!
      Trump being a lesser of an evil than Clinton does make him better. Thats exactly what the 'lesser of the evils' means! I think you have more than just an interest in US foreign policy, because you specifically highlighted Rees-Mogg's support for Trump as a concern, otherwise why wouldn't you just refer to US foreign policy?
      Sorry you didn't vote in the referendum. I think you'll find a lot of 'everyday people' voted in that referendum because they feel the EU creates issues that affect them.
      As far as the monarchy is concerned there are plenty of good reasons to maintain it. There's an interesting study by Sascha Becker (Warwick University) who argues that a monarchy contributes substantially towards social cohesion. Maybe you should check it out. I for one have always had respect for Her Majesty.

    • @Baresi-Unico-Capitano
      @Baresi-Unico-Capitano 7 років тому +4

      The only way you couldn't like the true eloquence of his English is if you don't appreciate the sheer beauty of the English language.
      We're talking about a man who was born into wealth. It isn't' so much his father, family wealth or his job as a banker than has me presumably judging him. I judge him as a man who doesn't feel the suffering of the working class, because as yet, he has not put his vote against a single bill that looks to protect the most vulnerable in our society. I'm not saying that he is a bad person, or someone who wouldn't feel at ease when surrounded by a mixed set of people. I'm saying that as a parliamentarian, Jacob is the absolute example of the detached Tory. Pro zero hour contracts and he recently voted against the review of the salary cap of public sector employees. I cannot separate his background from his political views and policy leanings, for that his background has clearly shaped his views.
      Take me. My grandparents were farmers. They pretty much farmed not to make profit but to feed the family. My parents were the only two children from both sides to truly go into higher education. They both became doctors. Now, whilst we grew up initially in small three bedroom houses, parents having the large room and my sisters sharing the other large room and I always ending up in the very small room. Because of where they came from, it was never a parenting policy for my mum and dad to give me easy money. Because for them, it never came by easily. My first mountain bike was bought from a car boot sale in Welling for £35, that I raised doing paper-rounds. In fact, most of the kids at school thought it was crazy that a boy apparently born to doctors didn't always have the latest trainers etc. Such an upbringing teaches you to truly feel how poor people get by. The idea that every penny counts. Jacob has never had that. If he did, he wouldn't vote to freeze the wages of nurses, who are on the same level of pay as 2005.
      It was only 7-9 years ago that we had an economic crash, with bankers playing a rather critical and yet destructive part. So to look at bankers in a negative manner is certainly not a completely out of a norm thought. Furthermore, Jacob is on the backbenches. I would've thought that if his economic acumen was so profound, at some stage, someone would give him a job as part of the cabinet.
      I have issues with Jacob's support for Trump, because it is baffling to say the least. For a man of Jacob's integrity and intelligence to support a person like Trump is just very difficult to comprehend. But from a policy point of view as well as their backgrounds when being born into money, I suppose it isn't a surprise.
      I'm not sure if it was in response to you or someone else in this thread, but I highlighted factual information as to the monarchy being completely at odds in existence in not only the modern world, but an elected democracy. Saying that the monarchy contribute towards 'social cohesion' is an opinion. What isn't an opinion is Prince Charles not being required to abide by planning permission laws, that every other person in the last has to abide by. But that's just one piece of factual information, along with the near 60 bills that the government (elected government) has ran past the monarchy when looking to create laws. Such actions along with Charles vetoing 15 bills in the last 2.5 years as well as having access to free legal advise from the government make mockery of an elected democracy. The media have a huge part to play in promoting the monarchy as being important. They aren't. But above all, what annoys me most is that they're hidden behind the Windsor name, when in fact, the saxe coburg gotha's were pro hitler. These people had families in the SS, dined with Hitler and were more than happy to do deals with the nazi's in order to ensure their survival. Mussolini was a british agent prior to become one of the most right wing leaders in european history. That is all I will say in relation to the monarchy.

      I agree with gay marriage and equality, he doesn't persecute gays directly but people like him in powerful positions who hold views like that get to persecute indirectly with how they vote on bills in parliment. Just because a man loves another man shouldn't mean he cant legally marry that man.
      I was merely trying to understand JRM anti gay marriage stance and whether it is a result of a forced bumming session in his former school days. He has every right to think what he thinks, and I have every right to disagree with his thoughts and views. And I also have every right to suggest reasons why Jacob Rees-Mogg might hold those thoughts and views and being shafted silly in the potting shed by professor Slughorn when he was at Hogwarts is possibly one of them.

      Being British is a distinct culture which has spread around the world and is respected by the majority of the rest of the world. Being British is about common law, the right to a fair trial, the abolition of slavery, parliamentary democracy, the industrial revolution, the welfare state, equality in the voting system, free market economics, the insurance industry, commerce, defeating Hitler, the mother of the United States. On top of this, we are considered a fair and tolerant society, we are a preference for many people the world over as a place to raise a family. There is a seriously warped view on the hard left these days that British culture doesn't exist and we are de facto "bad guys" because we had an empire. There is a VAST amount to be proud of as a British person so, sincerely, STFU.
      I was born in a council house but the "unfair" system helped me progress through enterprise and hard work. Your zerol hour contracts are only happening because we have a glut of low skilled labour due toleft wing immigration policies which mean that employers can treat staff like shit, if there were less workers the bidding is higher, but I doubt mathematics works with lefties!

    well Im Scottish and originally wanted independence for closer government accountability but I have changed my mind because I would rather be part of UK outside EU than independent inside EU . The left with their spendthrift ways and an ignoring of the threat of Islam will destroy our way of life quickly . I also have just discovered JRM and I relate completely with him and I come from a working class background . What makes Jacob Reese Mogg a successful incumbent politician is he is willing to have the uncomfortable and fear inducing with everyday people who don't agree with him and try to make the argument for his side. Facing possible rejection isn't easy and we try to avoid it, but Mr. Mogg doesn't let rejection fade him and continues to make the effort. The fact that he looks and speaks like an aristocrat but engages with the people's where they are regularly is why he continues to win despite lookingand speaking like he came from Victorian England.

    One thing I really like about Jacob Rees-Mogg when he discusses Scottish independence is the tone he takes.
    Jacob never states that England would be weaker without Scotland, of course of the nations in the UK England is the international centre and powerhouse overall. He takes the discussion away from currencies, economics & international debates instead discussing his passion and love for the country.
    Jacob clearly loves the United Kingdom, he see's the UK as his country and he is British.
    It seems almost dead certain that if Scotland leaves then the Kingdom of England & Wales would form. I would love to ask if Jacob would feel a passion and love for England & Wales as he does the United Kingdom.

    Jacob Rees-Mogg exemplifies one of the truest marks of genuine high breeding, erudition, and innate aristocratic temper- a genuine and sincere democratic affection and consideration for the opinions of blue-collar men with their noses to the dirty grindstone. Despite his elite privileges and education, he never talks down or lectures at the Man in the Street, but only seeks to understand and convey respect to him. It reminds me of G.K. Chesterton’s epitaph for his brother, Cecil:
    “His popular sympathies, unlike so many popular sentiments, could really survive any intimacy with the populace; they followed the poor not only at public meetings but to public houses.”

    I always saw Scots as fellow Britons and have been saddened by the hatred of the English by the SNP. You'd think England was oppressing them when nothing could be farther from the truth. The barnet formula means Scots get more government money per head than England and they have free tuition fees largely paid by English taxes. Yorkshire has a larger population than Scotland and they'd be severely diminished if they left the UK.
    I find it hilarious that Nicola sturgeon wants _another_ indyref because we're leaving the EU. She didn't seem that concerned about EU membership given had she won the indyref2015 she'd have been out of the EU instantly.
    Makes loads of sense leaving a union of 4 with far more power for a union of 27 where they'd be lost at the back... If they even get accepted. It could very well not happen given spains problems with catalonia.
