FIP in Cats: The Complete Guide (and new treatment option)

  • FIP in cats - three initials that strike fear into every cat owner who knows how deadly this disease can be. While the virus that causes FIP is incredibly common, up until now treatment has been hopeless. thankfully, there could soon be a brand new treatment that offers an infected cat a much better chance of survival.
Feline Infectious Peritonitis is the result of a mutation in an otherwise common, yet relatively harmless, cat-specific coronavirus. This then results in either "wet" or "dry" FIP - syndromes that differ by symptom but are equally deadly.
A new treatment with a human antiviral drug may, however, mean a cat suffering from FIP could quickly recover - something that's unheard of up to this point.

Until very recently, I'd never even heard of FIP. I lost my 8 month-old kitten to it a couple weeks ago and I still cry for him. We were very closely bonded and when I had to put him to sleep I felt like I was killing a part of myself along with him. The disease just overwhelmed him entirely. His symptoms started on a Tuesday and he was dead the following Tuesday. That's how fast he deteriorated. The vet only diagnosed FIP on his last day. Up until then, he was hospitalised on a drip and I was getting daily updates saying he seemed to be doing well. That he's "bright and alert". Turns out he only appeared that way because he was over-stimulated and had a seizure on his last day. He was jaundiced, thin as a rake and couldn't breathe without assistance. I broke down into an inconsolable wreck when I saw him to say goodbye.
    My poor boy.
He tried to get up when he saw me but collapsed. I asked if he was in pain and the vet said he's definitely uncomfortable. So the decision was made. He died with his head resting in my hand and I buried him at my nan's house with the other cats that came before him. He was the sweetest little thing. Even when I had him neutered, the vets told me they fell in love with him. That he's a real cuddler. He'd run down the stairs to greet me after work, taught himself to play fetch, and LOVED cuddles and kisses. He broke the typical stereotypes of cat behaviour. His name was Cupid, because of how loving he was. Never will there be another like him in my life.
I hope this cure will be available to mainstream vets soon. So that this heartbreaking diagnosis can finally be a thing of the past. Here's to you, Cupid. x

Thank you for helping to spread the word that FIP is no longer a death sentence. My cat was diagnosed with wet FIP back in May, and the vet told us he only had days or weeks to live. Luckily, I found FIP Warriors and was able to get a vial of GS locally. I injected him for 84 days straight and then another 84 days of observation. Today he is cured and happy and healthy. I've since treated 4 foster kittens with FIP, one is in observation and doing amazing.

Hi, Im sad, depressed and anxious atm, just woke up after crying myself to sleep last night. I have a male kitten/cat (he's around 5 months old) his name is Oreo. When we first bought that beautiful boy back in september, he was such a playful, happy kitten. Hes a persian cat with the lightest most pulchritudinous soft fur. I used to sleep with him and then got replaced with my brother who later became his best friend. My mother liked cats but her only problem was poop training. Thankfully Oreo's pooped trained already, so no more concerns. My mom wasnt a fan of cats ever but when we bought oreo ..he became my moms most fav child. He unfortunately got infected with fungal infection, his fur on his ears started falling off, we rushed to the doc and he gave us some medicines, a diet plan and a shampoo with which we were supposed to give him a bath everyday. My mom did all the struggle despite 1000 other things to do. Fortunately, everything got back to normal after a month of struggle by both us and oreo. Just right after 2 weeks Oreo started to look lethargic and pretty indolent. He'd sleep most of the time, wont eat food either, there was a white lining on the corners of his eyes. We took him to the vet where he told us that oreo had fever (104) we were scared to death but he told us to come the next 3 days consistently for injections(4-6 injections per day) God knows how much pain he would've went through..AGHHH..so when that medication was complete , Oreo started feeling better, he'd spend time with us, eat food properly, he'd eat so much he started having a big belly and we used to make fun of him saying how this lil boy is eating too much now he is a fat catto, he started to seem a lil weak again and we took him to the vet again, where LITTLE DID WE KNOW ..our cat had corona, the wet fip..so his belly wasnt fat by eating too much it was actually swollen ...I still cant stop crying while writing this. The vet gave his word and told us our oreo has just a few days left for survival..theres no other way he can be treated ...the GS 414255 is available in Dubai and its not too affordable ..I dont know whats gonna happen ..i just want my OREO ALL HEALTHY MEOWING AND LICKING MY FACE EVERY MORNING LIKE HE USED TO CUZ HE WANTED TO PLAY. I really dont want all of this to become a memory, I wanna live with him for as much as i can. I have a favour, whoever reads this .. please pray my cat gets well soon. I dont wanna hang myself around false hopes too Im mentally ready but im not AHHHHHH.

Our cat developed FIP last year (he was 2 years old at the time) and we got the GS treatment and after a little less than a 100 days he was cured. It's been now just a year after the end of the observation period and our cat is doing amazing! Absolutely no side effects in our case and he's recovered really nicely and is a whole new cat with a lot of energy. Healthy as an ox.

    • @vitalbutinar
      @vitalbutinar 5 місяців тому

@@user-zq3mm6fc5bat first we didn't. But then one weekend I was at work and my partner told me that she had given the cat two bowls of water to drink per day and this was a lot more than usual. Over the next week he began to lose weight and had bowel problems. These were already present for a long time, so we took him to another vet and thankfully this one suspected FIP right out of the box and admitted the cat because he was dehydrated. In a few days we knew and then we started treatment at home, because because the vet was officially not allowed to help. Thankfully the recognized what was wrong and were able to give us all the support while we treated the cat.
In the end everything thankfully worked and yesterday was one year from the end of the observation period.
Do you have a cat that's suspected of FIP?

He could not move his body on his own, I could see that he was barely breathing. I grabbed him and ran to the vet as soon as I could. He had symptoms of both wet and dry FIP. He was so far gone I knew it would be selfish and cause him more suffering if I didn’t just have him put to sleep. He was the sweetest cat I’ve ever had and my life isn’t the same without him. water , tried to put water in his mouth and he would choke and resist , worthless vets could tell me nothing , but took lots of my money
I just gave up and had him put down , at the time of death a strange fluid drained out of his nose , they couldn't tell me what that might be
either , maybe somebody out there might have seen that before. The experience left me with a disdain for vets , no one seemed to care about

She was a stray cat here in Istanbul Turkey and tested FCOV positive on Elisa test kit almost a year ago. I had her tested with other various tests as well including RT-PCR, full blood count and biochemistry lab tests. She’s FIPV negative according to the repeated RT-PCR tests. Thank God, her ALB and GLOB levels are also in normal range. Should I still worry about her and my other cats as well? They have no symptoms whatsoever but I’m all the time down with “what if...” questions. They have all been tested FIPV negative in RT-PCR tests. Looking foward to hearing your response. Thanks in advance. Bests.

my bengal kitten boy is 8 months old and has seemed to develop this disease, it’s truly heartbreaking. i’ve only had him for around 4 months and in that short amount of time he has become my other half. he lost so much weight, has become anemic, not eating, really lethargic, not himself at all, pale gums, finding trouble walking… he’s currently at the vet undergoing treatment and having tests done, if FIP is detected, or should i say signs as they can’t get a full on diagnosis he will be getting treatment that costs around 2-3k i’m so fortunate i’m able to afford it, i just hope he makes it through :( he seems to be deteriorating right infront of my eyes :( really wish this treatment becomes more affordable so other owners don’t have to go through the horrors of having to let their beloved pet go due to this cruel disease :(

Wow sounds really promising! FIP is arguably one of the most frustrating diseases in cats to deal with due to its high infection and mortality rate, so it's great to hear that there is finally a potential drug on the market that could be curative! Would love to track its progress, could you perhaps provide the link to the study that had been performed Dr Alex?

My cat developed massive ascites at about 10-12 years of age. He acted well otherwise except for the abdominal discomfort. His bloodwork had normal kidney and liver functions. His white count was elevated. My vet tapped his abdomen and removed 1.5 liters of fluid. However, no I. V. Fluid replacement was offered. He deteriorated rapidly after the tap and died the next day. I think he died from probable cardiovascular collapse from the excessive fluid removal. Studies ordered on the ascites fluid were cancelled by the vet without my knowledge when he died. I really wished to know the cause of his ascites. I also think he could have been given better supportive care. I would appreciate comments on his case (I am a retired pediatrician, very familiar with health care options).

My cat got FIP about a month and a half ago, and I can tell you that he is recovering amazingly. There is an official legal study being done by a group of vets in Ontario Canada. It uses two separate drugs both in pill form and both from legitimate sources here in Ontario. Not black market sources. The vets got authorization from the manufacturer for the gs drug for the study. They have around 240 cats in the study so far and a 90-95 success rate. You’d never notice that my cat was sick to look at him now. Once on the medication improvement is within 48-72 hours.

i’m writing this hoping there is a light at the end of my tunnel, as well as the individuals fighting to keep their kitty alive. about two weeks ago, i took my kitten (blue eyed white fluffy persian/himalayan) kitten to the vet for his first round of vaccines. all the sudden, a couple days later he has a pot belly. last night i finally took him to the vet, where they drained enough fluid to treat at the lab for the disgusting fip virus. the liquid she said did not travel to his chest, but was a light yellow color. my baby is just 2 1/2 months old. i’m so attached to him, he’s beautiful. until the test comes back monday from the pet hospital, the vet i took him to for his first round opens sunday. i’m just thinking to myself, how is it fip if i purchased him healthy and two weeks ago the vet said he’s a healthy kitty? they checked everything at that appointment? i’m so struck by this and i’m praying, god please this too shall pass. i’m praying that this is something curable, that this test comes back negative. i pray over everyone and their kitties with the same symptoms, and that mine along with their furry babies live a long and healthy happen life🙏🏼

We've only injected it for 1 week... The one with neurological improved dramatically, gain 150 grams, eat normal, walk better. The one with wet fip still hasnt showed much result but not deteriorating either. I didnt put my hopes high but now that i do see difference , fingers crossed
    Update:
As per 23rd may 2021, two weeks before the treatment supposed to end.
The one with neurological FIP has gained 1.5 kilograms o_O activity and appetite totally normal. The last blood result, albumin normal, globulin only slightly high
(His a/g ratio used to be 0.2 and now it's 0.5)
The one with wet fip, we discontinued the treatment bec apparently she has CKD, but until now the pleural effusion hasnt reappeared
We treated the 3rd cat with FIP (wet, abdominal) and it's our 2nd months. The effusion has disappeared completely , his activity and appetite is 100% return to how it was before

Intestinal coronavirus is common with up to about 40% of all cats being infected but very very few developing FIP. The only way to be 100% safe would be to wait until your current cat hopefully clears the infection and tests negative. In reality, the risk of FIP is very small and ensuring you have enough litter trays which are emptied and properly cleaned regularly should be enough to further reduce risk

My cat have fluid buildup like crazy. The vet thought it was caused by a heart disease but they couldn't see anything on the xray neither with the ultrasound due to all the build up of fluid. Instead they tried to drain him of fluid. I got to see the fluid in the tubes they extracted and it was quite yellow but also transparent almost like urine. Could that be FIP? They didn't mention anything about FIP. He is 15 years old and have had problem with
watery eyes all his life. It looks almost like blood cloths around his eyes. They say it's a 50/50 chance of him surviving if we start giving him the blood pressure medication. But they haven't even been able to listen to his heart due to all the fluid and also they haven't done a blood pressure test either. Tomorrow we'll go back with him to the vet and let them drain more fluid. I read online about GS-441524
. Is it worth a try when they don't know whats causuing the fluid build up or is it to late to do anything if the wet form already gone this far?! He has trouble breathing due to buildup around his lounges. Not that he is panting but you can see him breating all down in his belly.

This is the worst disease I've ever known.
I lost a cat to it 4yrs ago and it was the worst thing I've ever lived through.
It is still relatively poorly understood and unfortunately this new treatment is completely unaffordable for most owners.
My heart goes out to you if you are going through this with your cat, I thought I'd never smile again or have another cat.
I now have 3 healthy thriving cats...the eldest one, with me throughout the trauma, remained unaffected by corona or fip. I was told by a vet that I couldn't have anymore or this would come to them.....Utter nonsense! I got 2 more cats and all 3 are thriving.
Fip is extremely random, I spent 2yrs after losing my cat researching this disease. I read every paper available and communicated with Mr Pedersen the fip expert.
Imo, all the cleansing, disinfecting and precautions in the world will not stop it happening. My cat was a Birman and they are known to succumb to it therefore I will never own a Birman again and I would advise against that breed if fip is a concern to you.
I still to this day carry pain and grief over it, it will never leave me. But know this, there is life after fip and you will go on to experience the joys that your next cat brings you.
It is a disgrace and a shame on pharma and government that this treatment is not made more affordable.
