Yeah, I was like "this is pretty but really not a shanty." Like, other genres make extensive use of call and response but have less rigid structure since the structure isn't built around specific tasks like shanties are. Like, could be a hymn, or a drinking song, or any number of other folk genres. And then you have people who seem to think that any and all folk music is a sea shanty, or worse, specifically "The Wellerman" (which is itself not actually a shanty, lol). Like, I've sung "The Old Dunn Cow", which is a drinking song, has zero nautical themes, and the melody sounds nothing like "The Wellerman" and had people go "I love 'The Wellerman'!" and I'm like, "clearly not enough to actually recognize it because this is a totally different song." Like, I don't generally mind people using "sea shanty" to refer to the entire maritime folk genre, I do it myself sometimes, but I feel when making comments on musical structure it's important to know what the actual structure being referenced by a term IS. I've found the VAST majority of the time people say something "sounds kinda like a shanty" it's people who have no idea what the term "sea shanty" even means in the first place, which, again, is fine when referring to a maritime folk song, like "Old Maui" or "The Wellerman", but when referring to modern filk songs (that's not a typo, google it if you don't know) or whatever that have nothing to do with the sea, or when someone WRITES a filk song and calls it a shanty when it clearly does not fit the definition, that's where I take issue.
