  • Want some wah inspiration? Let’s go beyond the wacka-wacka
Life too short for long UA-cam videos? Please see the ‘Interesting bits and go-to sections’ information below.
Welcome to the show! Loved by many and perhaps hated by more, the dear old wah-wah filtered its way into our consciousness thanks largely to a certain Mr Hendrix in the late 1960s. Since then it’s been used across a great many genres of music, becoming synonymous with a handful of truly great guitar players.
Dare we still use it? Does it immediately pigeonhole us into those wonderful clichés? Let’s see if we can offer up a couple of different ways to wah…
    Today’s board explanation…
We are both going through the same G3, but with separate signal paths.
My pedals - Mick here, hello - are the Jam Wahcko Wah, Fulltone Wah, Kingtone Fuzz, Box Of Rock and Echoplex, routed in to G3 Loop 1 and out to the Two-Rock from G3 loop 5.
Dan’s pedals are the Vox HW Wah, Phase 90, OCD, Juju and Halo, routed in to G3 loop 6 and out of the main output to the Marshall.
    Enjoy the show!!

I've gotta say, I think Frank Zappa was the greatest wah artist (wahrtist?) I've ever heard - always used it in fascinating ways to sculpt his melodic lines and shade his dynamics during solos. And he was also incredible at using a wah to dial in feedback frequencies; later in his career, he actually had multiband active EQs installed in his guitars so he could find the resonant frequency of every venue, crank it up via the EQ, and have infinite sustain whenever he wanted.

Great work as usual! I loved the "seagull" section. I'd love to see you guys do an episode on "Weird ways to use standard pedals". I think Adrian Belew used to plug both the input and output of a pedal (or chain of pedals) into both inputs on his amp (JC120 at the time, IIRC), and then "play" the effect with the knobs on the pedal. I've done that with a Distortion+ and CE-2 at one time; it's LOUD, but weird and cool at the same time.

I would always say, "Thanks!! You know it's just a wah pedal, not a voice box like Joe used." Nobody seemed to care. The WAH is possibly the most instantly expressive pedal ever created.

    @ckturvey Рік тому +9

Great episode! The Wah-wah is always on my board. I like to place my VOX Wah after the fuzz and before the overdrive. With the fuzz and wah on, it gives me a very primitive analog synth sound with a envelope filter sweep. if you also turn the bias down on the fuzz, it gives you this spity square wave sound that's great for funk. I've gotten the oscillation sound by plugging the wah the wrong way round, but never experimented with it. That was very cool! I've heard an oscilation sound with it plugged in correctly but when the battery is about to die. I wonder if it will behave like it does the wrong way around. Something to try out!😀

The ability to instantly rewire the entire signal chain order is the best argument ever for a loop switcher like the G3. I can definitely see having the wah before and after the other effects during different parts of the same song, and a loop switcher is the only way to make that happen without using two or more wahs.

There was a real revelation in this for me- in that I’ve always followed conventional wisdom and put wah before everything, but the filter sounds that really resonate with me and that I’ve been chasing have much more to do with electronic music than traditional guitar sounds. Following the example of synths and DJ gear, it actually makes much more sense for me to put the filter pedal later in the chain, and to have that more exaggerated, holistic sweep.
And with the OBNE Float having recently been dropped, this could prove to be another expensive episode.

That’s not a wah. It’s an envelope filter.

Drewbecker.. is correct. Jerry used a Wah pedal in the early 70’s before the Mutron envelope filter. I agree is tone with the wah was masterful.

I was just watching the episode on auto wahs and envelope filters from a few years ago, what timing!
I love placing my wah at the very end of my signal chain as a sort of “master filter” effect, gives some really interesting sounds when i use the wah after my delay for a kind of shoegaze-y wash or a Vox Repeat Percussion-style tremolo for a crazy high pitch saw sound.
(and if anyone’s interested, if you like using wah for filtering, use a Tycobrahe Parapedal-style wah. Subterranean low end to insane high end. Several people have said it’s like using a Moog filter.)

Great episode! Probably has been mentioned already, but from hard rock world: Zakk Wylde is one great user of wah. He doesn't really do the wacka-wacka thing, but his albums with Ozzy are filled with great moments with the wah pedal.

I currently use 2 Wahs, first is a regular Vox V845 then a Fulltone Wahfull for the fixed(cocked) Wah sounds, both right after my Treble Booster or Fuzz. Cheers, Guys, great show, especially the treat of getting to hear you play together!

Awesome show guys! Old school TPS😃 Yes the Echoplex Delay is great, I use it on my big board with an external tap tempo👍👍👍 I also use the rhythmic funk delay on one of my favorite songs of the night to play🎸 And also thanks for showing the Gilmour seagull sound, I know I had accidentally got that to happen before but forgot how(not that I’m planning to use it 😂 but was a bit curious)

One of the coolest uses of wah by a band that I think is little known in the USA is in the song "Underground" by an Australian rock band The Angels. I heard it on the radio maybe a couple of times in 1979 or 1980 and I have never forgotten it. Maybe it seems so cool in my memory because it was so long ago. Possibly that band had difficulty getting traction in the USA because there was already at least one utterly different group in the USA with the name "The Angels" ("My Boyfriend's Back" etc).

great demonstration on the cocked wah utility using it after a fuzz. I've been using a fuzz face mini in front of a cry baby for ages and never even pictured this way of using it
