Romania's Parliament is a good modern example of the same - bankrupting the country for the ego of its dictator, while ignoring the actual plight of the people. Guess how Ceausescu ended too. Megaprojects are inherently risky, especially when commissioned by autocrats to flaunt their unrepresentive power at the expense of everyone else.

Ice ages have wreaked havoc on life on earth time and time again. There is no evidence that we have EVER, even once over heated our planet. In fact, as far back as we can see into human history, the warmer the climate got, the more populated and productive we became. Egypt deserves some sort of modern monument to represent it, it is an important part of our world and history. However, IF this tower is ever completed what the hell will they use it for? Also, I feel as though over time it will not be kept up and maintained like it would be in a city such as Dubai, Taiwan etc. Egypt as a whole is not a place for such a structure.

Where is Egypt getting the money for all this construction? They can't provide basic services, and suddenly they're spending hundreds of billions on not just buildings, but cities
I can't believe people are still using steel and glass to build skyscrapers. It's already been proven (in 2001) that an office fire and some kerosine can cause any of these types of buildings to collapse.
I worked and lived in Egypt for 4 years they can not build this with bamboo scaffolding. Must be hoping for the same people that built the pyramids to come back.

Serious question. What lifespan do they expect out of these buildings? Are they projected to stand 100 years? Less?
Those structures are rarely a good idea, probably will not economically do well.
But, on the plus side, at LEAST, its somewhat attractive.
What I want to know is how they’re gonna handle effluent.
Egypt is subject to earthquakes, I hope this is earthquake proof construction.
