    The other main interest of the two-tone siren over the wailing one is that it is more easily situated as the doppler effect works better : it's easier to know if the siren source is approaching or driving away.
    The wailing siren can be harder to locate, due to the fact it varies constantly and thus interferes with our perception of the doppler effect.
    But with the two-tone having, well, only two clear tones, duh, we better hear when it's decreasing in pitch when going away.
    Though the "shaker" used in the US is quite useful. A combination of the European two-tone with the American buzzer - shaker would be perfect.

      nowadays more and more emergency vehicles in Europe have a US-American type siren added to the vehicle (the siren-type that sound faster than the normal wailing one)
      they use that faster and more annoying one when they get into range of busy places (like a intersection full of cars) to make the people more aware to them and have them clear a path quicker.
      because it's a more annoying sound, people act quicker because they want that sound to be going away as soon as possible.
      but most of the time they use the "normal" European style siren. it just works better in most situations.

      @@ChristiaanHW Well, at least for Belgium. The Netherlands is not using the wailing siren, as far as I know. I'm Dutch too.

      @@JaapGinder yeah it's hard to explain how the "faster" siren sounds.
      it's not like a normal USA style siren.
      we just call it the "versneller" in Dutch. but it has a more USA type of sound, than the normal European siren.

    A few years ago when I was in New York, I was struck by the constant sirens. To this day I still don't understand why I was so upset. Thanks for the explanation.

    Yeah, what was said below, it is more difficult to determine the position of a wailing siren, especially with buildings reflecting it off. 118db is what it is, you don't want to stand next to it.

    The European two tone is not a single frequency, al least in The Netherlands it is more a vibrato, alternating high low. We used to have different ones for ambulance, fire trucks and police, but it was unified some 15 years ago.

    Hertz and decibels are different. 80Hz is low frequency

    Birmingham in the UK, and the whole of the UK, does not use the European siren. Had this guy ever been to the UK, and Birmingham?

    Of course the European one is better. Gives you less irritation. He said it exactly the way it is: LESS ANNOYING

    Europe has many sirens, this is outdated and odd.

    This video you reacting to old? Because in the last 15-20 years everyone has changed their sirens. I think the video is going off old information.
    The UK has merged the high/low with the wail into one and USA is doing the same. The idea is to hit as many frequencies as possible to reach max range in decibels, distance and spectrums.
    I am also sure other European countries are doing the same as they update their vehicles.

    • @ChristiaanHW
      @ChristiaanHW 19 днів тому +1

      we still have a high-low type of siren for normal use.
      but we do have a more rapid one (like they have in the US) the emergency vehicles tend to use at busy intersections
      the only thing that has really changed in the last decade(s) is that we used to have a different siren for police, ambulances and fire department vehicles.
      so if you heard a siren you immediately knew which type of emergency vehicle it was. but now we have one sort of siren for them all. (i'm from The Netherlands)

    • @babalonkie
      @babalonkie 19 днів тому +1

      @@ChristiaanHW Mainland Europe will be more faithful to the older European Siren, but here in "special UK" it's definitely been merged. Also UK has been using the same siren for each type of response vehicle also for that period, which everyone should be doing anyway, a emergency vehicle is a emergency vehicle.
