I'm having trouble getting the Garritan instruments at all! I've just been using Finale for notation, now I'd like to work on sound output also. Looking for answers.
I strongly recommend you use the Noteperformer sample library with Finale. The sounds are great for the price point (about $120) and it’s easy to install/use. You can even pay in monthly installments and stop anytime if you’re not happy with it.
I’m looking at the Akai LPK25 to hook up to my laptop. I don’t have a lot of space for a full keyboard, so I figured this may work for me. I’m also running Finale 2014. Would the new Garritan packs work on my version of Finale, or would I have to upgrade Finale? Thank you
In an early version of Finale ( p maybe Finale 2000 or 2002) there was a sample composition of a piano concerto that I have never heard anywhere else … it’s driving me insane because I remember too little to be able to find that piece of music. If you can help, please reply
Hi! I'm using Finale with Spitfire's Symphonic Strings. Do you know if it's possible to switch the articulations throughout the piece? like from spiccato to legato?
That’s a really good library! It’s from Spitfire. Garriton (sp) is super easy to use with Finale. Unfortunately, it doesn’t sound very good at all. It’s too bad the makers of Finale didn’t partner with Native Instruments or some other company that has professional-sounding samples.
Hi Mr. Watson I need to hear the different tones of a chord in my score. I don't know how to use the mixer to identify the sound of each note. The chords don't sound right, although, when I play the chord on the acoustic piano it sounds right. What is a good approach?
If you've orchestrated the different chord members to different staves (or even different layers of the same staff), you can use the solo and mute buttons in the Score Manager window to isolate them. And, as I believe you are pointing out, you can use the mixer to balance out different staves.
I'm trying to get a good balance playback .. but the left hand in all HP options is too loud. The mixer understands both staves as 1 instrument. I can't find the way to lower the volume of the left hand. Any suggestions
You could go into the Score Manager (Window menu) and manually assign LH and RH piano staves to different CHANNELS, which allows their volume to be set independently. Try it!
I enjoyed the video.....some great info.....have v.26 w/Aria player....how do I add reverb? Going into Aria doesn't seem to show any options.....also: can you direct me to a video that shows how to set default levels in mixer so that they're balanced w/volume in individual instrument parts, dynamic settings, etc? I've had wild inconsistency w/levels....have to put FFFF right next to MP w/instruments supposed to be playing together....thanks for any guidance!
For REVERB, go to MIDI/Audio --> Audio Units Banks & Effects --> and add/configure using the Effects or Master Effects drop-down menus. I think the answer to your FFFF next to MP concern is to program a few different versions of each dynamic. For instance, program one F to be at a velocity of 100, and another to be only 75. Then use whichever you prefer when rendering your score. BOTH look exactly the same on the score (to the player/conductor)...but they playback differently. I do this - maybe 3 versions at different velocities - for every dynamic level I use in most scores.
But why do instruments stop playing after Ive extracted a part? Sometimes I can get them back by closing the next available instrument form there instrument bank, but sometimes it still doesn't work.
Hi! Your work is great, I have a question, I have the "free orchestra", I have the BBC Symphony orchestra and now I have the "east west" libraries through composer cloud..BUT, I have not been able to use them in FINALE. I try to use Kontakt or PLAY engine but I have not succeeded. It's kind of frustrating. If you can help me with something, it would be very useful
Not sure what version of Finale you have, but in the last year I started using Note Performer 3 which is now my favorite software instrument collection for use with Finale. It's easy to configure and 9 times out of 10 produces exactly what I want. You might want to check it out. It's much less expensive BTW than the libraries you have.
Could be you just need to turn down the volume on your keyboard (which is making the piano sound). Could also be a MIDI Thru issue, which is tough fir me to work you thru here. Just give MakeMusic Finale tech support a call…I bet you’ll have the issue solved in 10 mins.
Hey! So I'm using two different libraries in finale at the same time. When I press play, some sounds will come through and others like static. What can I do to solve this problem? Great video by the way!
Hmm. I’ve used multiple (software instr) libraries but w/o this outcome. I’m especially perplexed by the “static” thing. This may be worth a call or email to Finale tech support. The only thing c you might try is to be sure each library is assigned to a different “bank”.
@@ScottWatsonMusic I also use Mac with Finale 26 (italian version). On my channel I am publishing some of my virtual scores. I'm studying sounds, but not all percussions is good. Maybe I'm better COMB2's percussions. Thanks
This is interesting, but I'm more interested in seeing how to connect Finale to more professional sounding instrument libraries to create a more realistic sounding orchestral mockup. Even the extra Garritan instruments you cite here don't even come close to some other instrument libraries I've heard other midi mockups use. Like the oboe sound here- it's OK, and my brain almost believes it, but something about the sound... don't know what it is but every time it slurs from B to A my brain screams "FAAAKE!!!" And I know those are the little details that add up to lay people hearing the playback and thinking the music's not very good. They're not used to using their aural imagination, so they tend to think the writing must be bad. But most other videos I watch that actually have decent sounds have people using Sibelius. It makes me sad as I've been using Finale for about 20 years, but I'm starting to think they just aren't keeping up with the times. If there are much better playback sounds please point me in the right direction, as I keep wasting time watching videos, and it's either videos like this with more of the same unprofessional Garritan sounds, or Sibelius as far as the eye can see. I know I can get a completely different system for playback, but I don't want to have to enter every single note twice- once to make a mockup and once for the score. I want a system that actually talks to Finale and I can get the whole playback then fix the details that might be missing.
Since making this video I’ve started using Noteperformer 3 as my go-to sample library w/Finale. It’s the best I’ve used - I’m very pleased and think you will be too if you give it a try!
@@ScottWatsonMusic Thank you! I really hate to switch away from Finale for so many reasons. Forgive me, I haven't had a chance to look before I replied- do any of your more recent videos use Noteperformer 3?
Thank you for sharing Dr Watson. I liked how your dynamics and articulations work in the score. Need to figure that out. Beautiful writing!
I realize it's pretty randomly asking but do anybody know a good site to stream newly released movies online?

Is it possible to transfer a finale score to a more realistic sound library? Can you explain how? Thank you a lot

@@ScottWatsonMusic ok thanks so much, I will try the note performer 3
Just a question. Has finale been able to recognise these vst plugins in the vst folder, it searches? And does Finale see Kontakt player?
Question. All instruments sound piano. But when I push play the real sounds are there. Can I hear the real sound right now when I compose ?

So, how does Finale work with something other than Garriton (sp?)? I’d like to use Finale with something much more professional-sounding.
I believe whatever AU software library you have installed will show up in GarageBand to use.
@@ScottWatsonMusic It’ll show up in GarageBand? I didn’t even know GarageBand and Finale communicated.
Yes! But if you’re looking for a better sample library than Garriton to use w/Finale, I recommend you give Noteperformer 3 a try.
