Love them or hate them this first movie was peek entertainment! This is the movie that got me watching the newer Transformer cartoons. Before this, the last Transformers thing I ever watched was Beast Wars way back in the 90s.

There are problems with it though. Optimus was altered and not quite right, he's supposed to be a protector of the innocent, yet he only protects Sam....he lets every other human die. Doesn't even order the Autobots to help the humans and save their lives. Which is not accurate to the lore of the franchise.
@@ItApproaches You say that, but there's also the "there's no way to free bumblebee without harming the humans" scene, which is VERY in character with Optimus Prime, so overall they represented him quite well I'd say. Optimus is a protector yes, but he's also pragmatic. He knows full well that he can't be everywhere at once. The best way to protect the most humans possible is to guard Sam and find the all spark. It wouldn't be reasonable to expect him to just make his presence known constantly saving every human that's in danger from anything.

I’ve been watching Transformers since I was a kid. I’m almost 50 now and I saw this movie in the theater and when Optimus Prime transforms I was crying and cheering. I was not alone because everyone in the theater was clapping and cheering.
It's such an iconic scene and you can tell that they really wanted to give his transformation the spotlight and it was done so well. His transformation and the intro where it's just a black screen with Optimus Prime narrating are some of my top 10 moments in the whole franchise.
When Optimus showed up and it was Peter Cullen reprising the role people LOST THEIR MINDS with happiness. Movies just don't hit like that anymore. It's like Hollywood collectively lost their mojo lol.

It doesn't matter how many times I've seen the movie, the scene with Optimus and the other Autobots arriving on Earth will always give me the good kind of chills. Little backstory: Since I was born in 1991, I didn't get to grow up with Peter Cullen as the voice of Optimus. In 2001, my first exposure to the Transformers universe was through the series Robots In Disguise, with a voice actor named Neil Kaplan providing the voice of Optimus Prime. Then from there it went to the Unicron trilogy with Gary Chaulk as the voice of Optimus. I didn't get to fully bask in the glory of the Autobot Supreme Commander until this movie came out in 2007. I have a profound appreciation for what Peter Cullen has brought to the table in the world of the Transformers. Between the live action movies (4 and 5 are horrible), and the Transformers Prime series. He is forever my favorite voice actor for Optimus Prime. I just hope I get to meet him one day before he inevitably passes.

This movie came out my first year as active duty US air force and I was stationed at Nellis where parts of this are filmed and let me tell you we were HYPED watching this in theaters as dumb young airmen, seeing our planes and jobs on screen, and it was a blast! 🤣
In an interview Michael Bay said that the moment that he grasped what a huge film this was going to be occurred when he was filming the first scene in the desert. He told the soldiers that it was going to sound silly but he needed them to pretend that they were being chased by a giant robot. Their faces all lit up and they wanted to know which one and Bay realized that he was making the film for them.

And that's the only Wilhelm scream I tolerate in any movie. The first few times watching, I didn't even realize it was the Wilhelm scream until someone pointed it out. It works here because the voice is edited to fit the character and the situation itself is goofy. Whenever it's used in a serious action scene in any other movie, it completely ruins immersion and just takes me out of it. You missed two mid-credit scenes. The first one is just a bit of comedy with the parents being interviewed, establishing that the whole Mission City incident was covered up. But the second one shows Starscream flying into space, explaining where he disappeared to and setting up how we see him in the 2nd movie.

One of the last films to be presented in 35mm in our local theater. I have a special memory about this film as my friend was a projectionist in the theater and asked if I want to "check" the print before premiere. So it was me sitting alone in the middle of a fully rigged THX sound system theater with volume set to -7dB LUFS (reference that was marked on the reels). As a Transformers fan since I was a kid, my mind was appropriately blown, of course.

From what I understand them GI Joe movies that came after this was supposed to become part of a shared universe similar to the MCU but due to the GI Joe movies not doing well enough the plans were canceled. Hi, Oscar, I'm a 3D artist, I can tell you, the thought process and the time the 3D Rigging artists spent researching and making the skeletons of each robots and the time the animators took, the dedication of all the texturers, lighting artists, and all the others artists, are what made those effects so good. When I was studying, I remember watching a documentary on UA-cam with the breakdown of how those effects were done, I can assure you, I have nothing but respect for those artists . Rigging, while I love this field, can be a nightmare if there's a problem, imagine if you have this level of complexity. I remember,as an exercise we had a simple robot to model and rig, one of my teachers told me and my colleagues that each movement had to have mechanisms that would make it believable to the viewer: "nothing is free, you can't just put ball joint everywhere on the model. " . That, that's x 400 at least. You would have to know how cars works, how those particular chosen models work to the part, then plan and figure out what you modify to match with the story and how the film director wants them to move and then only actually rig it, go back and forth with the director, the supervisor, the animators then, get it approved and pass it to the animators. I tell you, I respect those talented people. Even more so that you do this mad work and, at the end, your name is just hidden in plain sight in the credits
Sam's cringey line about more than meets the eye was written in purpose because the animated 80s cartoon of Transformers were stated to be More Than Meets the Eye. The writers wanted to throw in that line purposefully as an Easter egg to fans of the cartoon
The Camaro in which Bumblebee transforms is the prototype of the "new Camaro" from 2009. Michael Bay had to be careful not to scratch, dent or damage the car while filming. There was no new one, there was only the one. The car was promoted through the film in 2007. 2 years later the car was officially released and sold. A couple of quick fun facts: The military aspect was SUPER close to how they'd behave IRL as far as communications, uniform etc because the US Military consulted pretty closely with Michael bay on a lot of that side of things. Also, the phone call at the start where the operator is being kinda blasé about it all and the soldiers are all kinda panicky and yelling "LEFT CHEEK! LEFT CHEEK!" etc was apparently based on a real experience one of the soldiers consulting on the movie actually had.

My brother and I watched the cartoon as kids and this was so mind blowing for us when we saw it in theaters. It relaunched our love for these characters. Don’t think they needed AS many movies as they made but this one is pure magic!

My man & I are 8 months apart & he just turned 50 on Saturday so we grew up with Transformers from the beginning & loved this movie so much. We saw it in the theater twice - super impressed w/the cgi. It still holds up pretty well. Even w/Shia LeBeouf (and John Voight) being in it, we still love it.
Megatron's voice is done by the same actor who played Elrond in Lord of the Rings. It's hard to recognize because of the computerized vocal enhancements.
I think the craziest thing about the Transformers movies is all the moving parts as they transform. Just the creativity to make it look good and actually make sense. A later movie has an insane transformation that is just incredible lol. That's the OG VA for Optimus Prime, Peter Cullen. He has been around forever and he recently had a role on the really gore-heavy animated show Invincible, which is also good, but heavy on the language and visuals. Shia LaBeouf has some decent movies. Earliest I know of that I remember is Holes, then you have Disturbia (plays a real similar character) and my favorite of his is The Peanut Butter Falcon, which is so underrated and no one seems to talk about it. You mentioned it many times in your reaction, but it got nominated for sound mixing and editing, plus special effects.
The first movie stood the test of time very well! First, second, and third movie will always hold a special place in my heart -- this franchise was a foundation of my childhood, and each significant on-screen death still hits hard for me. Despite growing up watching G1TF in the early 2000s, this movie delivered and I geniunely enjoy watching Oscar's reaction as someone new to the franchise. The strength of this movie is, that it stayed right on the "have fun with it" line... never took itself too serious. I gre up with the transformers cartoons and saw this movie in cinemas back in the day and I still thoroughly enjoy it. Haven't seen the others in the franchise though.
I love how they have the yellow VW beetle on the lot because that's what bumblebee actually look like in the animated shows and movie so a lot of us the first time watching is expected that to be his look for the movie I'm kind of glad they went with a little bit of a change
So I grew up with transformers as a kid. Always been a bumble bee fan. My cousin use to make me watch the cartoon with him when we were kids. I actually liked this movie. It was a lot better than I thought it was going to be. Lol I don’t even mind that they made Bumble bee into a Camaro. You should check out the Prequel as well.
There's a video of the voice actor for Optimus Prime explaining where he came up with the voice. He's been the voice actor for most if not all of the character's renditions. It's a pretty amazing story.
I remember being 2 or 3 yrs old in theaters being mesmerized by this movie, so beautiful and has always been so special. I'm not a big movie person but this is a movie everyone should see, I was beyond obsessed with Bumble Bee
lol love when ratchet bust Sam and his little run in with the power line. And love ironhide wanting to take out Sam’s parents. They act Like a little kids. Those two are my favorites from the movies.
I was managing a movie theater the summer this movie came out, and let me tell you it was an absolute SENSATION. It had been a hot minute since we had had a full-on summer blockbuster, and this film PACKED the theaters. I think we had it playing on 5 screens and it was still sold out for weeks. It was really cool though because they used to send us the film reels in these giant canisters that were locked and they would send the combination a few days before the premiere. But it was actually super easy to break into them, so we would assemble the films early and invite all our frienes for midnight screenings. We all got to watch this for the first time at 2am at full volume like two weeeks before it actually came out. It was such an awesome summer
Generally, the Autobots will never turn into a plane or a military vehicle. I get they're supposed to be blending in, but you'll see how later that excuse doesn't really make any sense.
This is one of those movie series that once you start it you've got to finish it because every single movie holds up beautifully and they're all SO GOOD!

I grew up with these movies and I still get chills every single time I hear the Optimus prime theme, the autobots theme, and at the end when he gives his speech with linkin park in the background.
6:36 fun fact, that yellow VW Beetle that got blindsided by that car door- that's the original vehicle mode of the character Bumblebee from the 1980s Transformers Generation 1 cartoon :P 13:25 funny you should mention the special FX, the shots of Frenzy at 12:44, 13:12, those were PRACTICAL effects, that was a real puppet they made of the character that they could maneuver off-screen, and Transformers- this movie in particular had quite a bit of practical effects and physical props in certain scenes to really sell the look and feel of things, like that full Bumblebee they were hauling into Hoover Dam, up to Megatron's legs when he was frozen there, Scorponok's tail in a number of scenes, it's _exquisite_
While the story, and acting isn’t incredible I still enjoy the film for the action, music and visual effects which makes the series standout and of course Peter Cullen as Optimus Prime. Hopefully once you finish with all 5 of the Michael Bay Transformers films you will start reacting to _Bumblebee_ and _Rise of the Beasts_

I’ve been watching Transformers since I was a kid. I’m almost 50 now and I saw this movie in the theater and when Optimus Prime transforms I was crying and cheering. I was not alone because everyone in the theater was clapping and cheering.

It's such an iconic scene and you can tell that they really wanted to give his transformation the spotlight and it was done so well. His transformation and the intro where it's just a black screen with Optimus Prime narrating are some of my top 10 moments in the whole franchise.
When Optimus showed up and it was Peter Cullen reprising the role people LOST THEIR MINDS with happiness. Movies just don't hit like that anymore. It's like Hollywood collectively lost their mojo lol.

It doesn't matter how many times I've seen the movie, the scene with Optimus and the other Autobots arriving on Earth will always give me the good kind of chills.
Little backstory: Since I was born in 1991, I didn't get to grow up with Peter Cullen as the voice of Optimus. In 2001, my first exposure to the Transformers universe was through the series Robots In Disguise, with a voice actor named Neil Kaplan providing the voice of Optimus Prime. Then from there it went to the Unicron trilogy with Gary Chaulk as the voice of Optimus. I didn't get to fully bask in the glory of the Autobot Supreme Commander until this movie came out in 2007. I have a profound appreciation for what Peter Cullen has brought to the table in the world of the Transformers. Between the live action movies (4 and 5 are horrible), and the Transformers Prime series. He is forever my favorite voice actor for Optimus Prime. I just hope I get to meet him one day before he inevitably passes.
I was lucky enough to grow up with Transformers Prime, and it's the reason why _I_ associate him with Optimus so much.

This movie came out my first year as active duty US air force and I was stationed at Nellis where parts of this are filmed and let me tell you we were HYPED watching this in theaters as dumb young airmen, seeing our planes and jobs on screen, and it was a blast! 🤣
In an interview Michael Bay said that the moment that he grasped what a huge film this was going to be occurred when he was filming the first scene in the desert. He told the soldiers that it was going to sound silly but he needed them to pretend that they were being chased by a giant robot. Their faces all lit up and they wanted to know which one and Bay realized that he was making the film for them.

And that's the only Wilhelm scream I tolerate in any movie. The first few times watching, I didn't even realize it was the Wilhelm scream until someone pointed it out.
It works here because the voice is edited to fit the character and the situation itself is goofy. Whenever it's used in a serious action scene in any other movie, it completely ruins immersion and just takes me out of it.

You missed two mid-credit scenes. The first one is just a bit of comedy with the parents being interviewed, establishing that the whole Mission City incident was covered up. But the second one shows Starscream flying into space, explaining where he disappeared to and setting up how we see him in the 2nd movie.

One of the last films to be presented in 35mm in our local theater. I have a special memory about this film as my friend was a projectionist in the theater and asked if I want to "check" the print before premiere. So it was me sitting alone in the middle of a fully rigged THX sound system theater with volume set to -7dB LUFS (reference that was marked on the reels). As a Transformers fan since I was a kid, my mind was appropriately blown, of course.
The theme song for the cartoon I grew up with & that started all this, was “Transformers! More than meets the eye…” sam saying it to the girl was an easter egg

Hi, Oscar, I'm a 3D artist, I can tell you, the thought process and the time the 3D Rigging artists spent researching and making the skeletons of each robots and the time the animators took, the dedication of all the texturers, lighting artists, and all the others artists, are what made those effects so good. When I was studying, I remember watching a documentary on UA-cam with the breakdown of how those effects were done, I can assure you, I have nothing but respect for those artists . Rigging, while I love this field, can be a nightmare if there's a problem, imagine if you have this level of complexity. I remember,as an exercise we had a simple robot to model and rig, one of my teachers told me and my colleagues that each movement had to have mechanisms that would make it believable to the viewer: "nothing is free, you can't just put ball joint everywhere on the model. " . That, that's x 400 at least.
You would have to know
how cars works,
how those particular chosen models work to the part,
then plan and figure out what you modify to match with the story and how the film director wants them to move and then only actually rig it,
go back and forth with the director, the supervisor, the animators then,
get it approved and pass it to the animators.
I tell you, I respect those talented people. Even more so that you do this mad work and, at the end, your name is just hidden in plain sight in the credits
Sam's cringey line about more than meets the eye was written in purpose because the animated 80s cartoon of Transformers were stated to be More Than Meets the Eye.
The writers wanted to throw in that line purposefully as an Easter egg to fans of the cartoon
The Camaro in which Bumblebee transforms is the prototype of the "new Camaro" from 2009. Michael Bay had to be careful not to scratch, dent or damage the car while filming. There was no new one, there was only the one. The car was promoted through the film in 2007. 2 years later the car was officially released and sold.

As a early 80s 90s kid be voice patterns and dialogue between Megatron and Optimus took me back to my childhood.
A couple of quick fun facts:
The military aspect was SUPER close to how they'd behave IRL as far as communications, uniform etc because the US Military consulted pretty closely with Michael bay on a lot of that side of things.
Also, the phone call at the start where the operator is being kinda blasé about it all and the soldiers are all kinda panicky and yelling "LEFT CHEEK! LEFT CHEEK!" etc was apparently based on a real experience one of the soldiers consulting on the movie actually had.
The way your eyes lit up in the first couple seconds when Optimus started talking I knew you’d enjoy this haha

My brother and I watched the cartoon as kids and this was so mind blowing for us when we saw it in theaters. It relaunched our love for these characters. Don’t think they needed AS many movies as they made but this one is pure magic!

My man & I are 8 months apart & he just turned 50 on Saturday so we grew up with Transformers from the beginning & loved this movie so much. We saw it in the theater twice - super impressed w/the cgi. It still holds up pretty well. Even w/Shia LeBeouf (and John Voight) being in it, we still love it.
Also i ove Bumblebees voice at the end and Rip Jazz
Megatron's voice is done by the same actor who played Elrond in Lord of the Rings. It's hard to recognize because of the computerized vocal enhancements.

These films are fun to watch!
I think the craziest thing about the Transformers movies is all the moving parts as they transform. Just the creativity to make it look good and actually make sense. A later movie has an insane transformation that is just incredible lol. That's the OG VA for Optimus Prime, Peter Cullen. He has been around forever and he recently had a role on the really gore-heavy animated show Invincible, which is also good, but heavy on the language and visuals. Shia LaBeouf has some decent movies. Earliest I know of that I remember is Holes, then you have Disturbia (plays a real similar character) and my favorite of his is The Peanut Butter Falcon, which is so underrated and no one seems to talk about it. You mentioned it many times in your reaction, but it got nominated for sound mixing and editing, plus special effects.
The first movie stood the test of time very well! First, second, and third movie will always hold a special place in my heart -- this franchise was a foundation of my childhood, and each significant on-screen death still hits hard for me. Despite growing up watching G1TF in the early 2000s, this movie delivered and I geniunely enjoy watching Oscar's reaction as someone new to the franchise.

The strength of this movie is, that it stayed right on the "have fun with it" line... never took itself too serious. I gre up with the transformers cartoons and saw this movie in cinemas back in the day and I still thoroughly enjoy it. Haven't seen the others in the franchise though.
I love how they have the yellow VW beetle on the lot because that's what bumblebee actually look like in the animated shows and movie so a lot of us the first time watching is expected that to be his look for the movie I'm kind of glad they went with a little bit of a change

So I grew up with transformers as a kid. Always been a bumble bee fan. My cousin use to make me watch the cartoon with him when we were kids. I actually liked this movie. It was a lot better than I thought it was going to be. Lol I don’t even mind that they made Bumble bee into a Camaro. You should check out the Prequel as well.
There's a video of the voice actor for Optimus Prime explaining where he came up with the voice. He's been the voice actor for most if not all of the character's renditions. It's a pretty amazing story.
I remember being 2 or 3 yrs old in theaters being mesmerized by this movie, so beautiful and has always been so special. I'm not a big movie person but this is a movie everyone should see, I was beyond obsessed with Bumble Bee

I was managing a movie theater the summer this movie came out, and let me tell you it was an absolute SENSATION. It had been a hot minute since we had had a full-on summer blockbuster, and this film PACKED the theaters. I think we had it playing on 5 screens and it was still sold out for weeks.
It was really cool though because they used to send us the film reels in these giant canisters that were locked and they would send the combination a few days before the premiere. But it was actually super easy to break into them, so we would assemble the films early and invite all our frienes for midnight screenings. We all got to watch this for the first time at 2am at full volume like two weeeks before it actually came out. It was such an awesome summer

Generally, the Autobots will never turn into a plane or a military vehicle. I get they're supposed to be blending in, but you'll see how later that excuse doesn't really make any sense.
This is one of those movie series that once you start it you've got to finish it because every single movie holds up beautifully and they're all SO GOOD!

13:25 funny you should mention the special FX, the shots of Frenzy at 12:44, 13:12, those were PRACTICAL effects, that was a real puppet they made of the character that they could maneuver off-screen, and Transformers- this movie in particular had quite a bit of practical effects and physical props in certain scenes to really sell the look and feel of things, like that full Bumblebee they were hauling into Hoover Dam, up to Megatron's legs when he was frozen there, Scorponok's tail in a number of scenes, it's _exquisite_
While the story, and acting isn’t incredible I still enjoy the film for the action, music and visual effects which makes the series standout and of course Peter Cullen as Optimus Prime.
Hopefully once you finish with all 5 of the Michael Bay Transformers films you will start reacting to _Bumblebee_ and _Rise of the Beasts_
