a spark can melt the surface but cant weld 2 pieces of nickel plates... you have long nickel strip for testing but you never try to weld them because it wont work lol
The transformer is only needed to RECHARGE the parallel capacitors. The factor that enables welding is the OVERALL CAPACITANCE (or number of capacitors in parallel) and the size or gauge of wires feeding your welding electrodes, which should be AT LEAST 8AWG with copper tips for best results. Using a smaller 2A to 3A transformer and smaller diodes will simply take a little longer to fully recharge your capacitors, but it will still work. Any transformer from 3 Amps to 30 Amps will work just fine. Bigger transformer and diodes will simply recharge the capacitors faster. You should use a switch for charging up the capacitor bank, then switch the charging circuit OFF. Then use a fast heavy duty starter solenoid relay (or solid state relay) to trigger the welding current from the capacitors to the welding electrodes/tips with a momentary push button switch (or foot pedal switch) to trigger the relay. Also, that full wave bridge rectifier will cut your charging current from the transformer to the capacitors in HALF. Better to just use a simple quarter wave rectifier on each secondary from the transformer. A single 6 Amp diode on each secondary wire will do just fine to charge up those capacitors and you will get the FULL CURRENT from the transformer, which means you will recharge the capacitors faster. Very good basic concept here, but with many design flaws and refinements needed. You need AT LEAST 8 or 10 of those 3300uF capacitors to store enough current for reliable and consistent spot welding.....KB1BBY/Scott
Bridge converters are different currently! You can use 50 amperes and it will not cut it anymore! And I also look at anyone in testing different capacitors -there are other types that are used in asynchronous engines -the effectiveness of 100 percent in comparison with barrels!
I fully agree, I use a lipo battery bank with a constant current source so I can charge the caps without a huge inrush current. Also if the circuitry that disconnects the battery from the caps fails it's current limited to 5 amps. It can also change the current according to the SOC (State Of Charge) of the caps. Mine is for portable use though and is designed to weld very thick nickel strips. It's for building all my big batteries for my scooters, portable inverters, power walls and also for car audio use. Such as my 200 ah LiFePo4 battery bank.
Do you have a video of actual testing? Would love to see this weld. To me it don't look that strong. Would also like to see it connected to a amp meter. Typically 200 to 400 amps is the sweet spot when welding with a transformer. Great concept 👍👍👍
It's not going to be able to weld 2 nickel strips together. 1) you can't store enough energy in those capacitors. You need about 10 to 50 joules of weld energy. By the looks of those capacitors, you are way short of that. 2) the ESR of those capacitors and the resistance of your welding electrodes is way too high (switch to ultracapacitors of at least 100F and at least 8awg wire with proper crimp lug connections). You should target a total circuit resistance (including capacitors) of 6mOhm or less. 3) you need to apply a good amount of pressure with the welding probes prior to starting the weld. To do this, put MOSFETS or a big relay in series with the negative electrode. This will allow you to press down firmly before the weld starts.
This is very basic circuit. Video doesn't show welding of two stripes. There has to be many capacitors to provide enough energy required for melting two surfaces of stripes for welding. Also there has to be either current limiting circuit to protect diodes and transformer from repeatedly shorting or atleast timer circuit to limit short circuit period. Don't build this circuit as shown.
