  • After barely surviving the brutal Battle of San Carlos, the most costly naval battle waged by the Royal Navy since the Second World War, and successfully landing on East Falkland Island, 3 Commando Brigade was faced the daunting prospect of recapturing Stanley and driving the Argentine military from the Falklands. Opposing them were some 13,000 men under General Menendez, 10 battalion equivalents which were holding excellent defensive ground. Even with the arrival of 5 Infantry Brigade and its 3 additional battalions, bringing the total to 8, recapturing Stanley and its surrounding high ground was shaping up to be the most challenging operation conducted by the British Land Forces in decades.
But before the final battle could even be contemplated, General Moore had to break out of the beachhead, win the special forces battle, maneuver his forces across exceptionally difficult country, invest the primary defensive line and then assault the Argentine mountain fortresses, all in the middle of a sub-Antarctic winter. Although General Menendez' men are often decried as lowly conscripts, the plain reality was the heavily armed Argentine ground forces were ready and willing to fight and die for their Malvinas. Despite all of these challenges, through superior morale, command and, most importantly, tactical skill, the British battalions were able to drive the Argentines from this truly formidable defensive terrain, and liberate Stanley. But in doing so they would have to pay their share of blood and sacrifice.
This video, the second and final installment of the Military History of the Falklands War, covers the land campaign, including the Battle of Goose Green, the battle between the Argentine and British special forces for domination of the high ground and the reconnaissance edge, 3 Commando Brigade's yomp across East Falkland, the loss of Sir Galahad at Bluff Cove, 3 Commando brigade's offensive at Mount Longdon, Two Sisters and Mount Harriet and, finally, the ultimate battles at Tumbledown and Wireless Ridge.
