My uncle came up with a very unique way to catch the sap. Instead of a bucket we use 2L pop (soda) bottles. Cut one hole for the spout and another for the hook and it stays on the tree just fine. Since we have a bunch of different spigots we cut the bottles at the tree after measuring against the spigot sebas to have a snug fit. It's completely free so we don't have to buy buckets. We only have a few, not enough for all our trees. You don't even have to take it off the tree to collect it l. Just remove the cap to turn it and pour into the collection bucket. Protects the sap from the rain, snow and bugs.
I don't mind paying more for maple syrup....for the very fact of how much work goes into it. Thanks for sharing your way to make it. Very interesting. Take care.
Sorry to be off topic but does someone know of a way to get back into an Instagram account..? I was dumb lost the login password. I would appreciate any tricks you can give me!
@Conrad Ezequiel I really appreciate your reply. I got to the site on google and Im trying it out atm. Looks like it's gonna take a while so I will reply here later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
I know this is an old video but that was incredibly informative. I mean, I know the basics of how to make maple syrup (vaguely) but this gives me a whole new appreciation for all the work that goes into maple syrup. Thank you.
This video was SO well done Morgan! So thorough, and I completely agree with everything you said, based on our first experience making maple syrup. Propane is NOT cost effective. We will be brainstorming over the summer and fall to design a better system for evaporating. It worked, but it took FOREVER! And we still have over 40 gallons of sap to boil down. 🙈 -Jenn
Believe it or not we actually have one town here in Missouri that makes maple syrup and holds an annual maple festival. (Sugar maples are rare west of the Mississippi River.) They think birds brought the seeds across the river thousands of years ago, pooped them out, and established a small maple sugar forest along the banks of the river. Every January the people in town rush out to tap the trees and boil up batches of syrup. 😃
Thank you for making all that delicious maple syrup. There is no going back to fake cheap syrup. I’m going to try the dark maple syrup next time. So yummy with pancakes!
Great video but, I would be very careful using cinder blocks to make the wood burning evaporators because they are porous and absorb water they explode when heated to high temperatures. Always use clay bricks made fireplaces and ovens. Once again amazing video!
Man, this is the video I needed. Informative but from the perspective of a small self-serving operation. We are excited to give this a try this spring!
I enjoyed watching your video! My family and I have been making Maple Syrup in our backyard for a few years now. We use a small wood-fired evaporator that we purchased off Craigslist a few years ago. That was a game-changer for us! We boil most of the water out of our sap outdoors with the evaporator and then finish it off inside the house before canning it.
Definitely seems well suited for the young and enthusiastic! Pass the maple syrup jug.....please! My mouth is watering watching this. So Morgan, when's the next open house at Gold Shaw Farms!
I have 3 big maple trees & I was thinking to try making maple syrup. Thanks for the amazing video but it also made me realize how much work it is to make maple syrup. I may just go buy a jar of maple syrup. I never had real maple before...
Does it hurt the trees when you remove sap? I didn’t want to make it, just wanted to learn more. Excellent video!! Also the videos are no longer linked.
This reminds me of my youth, about 9-10 years of age. late 50's early 60"s. we only hard one tree, a maple, about 5 feet in diameter. Let it get thicker, to make maple sugar and have sugar on now! BTW'I will be 70 in November!
I'm from Ohio and while our maple syrup isn't as renown as that of Vermont or Canada, I would never settle for telephone pole syrup (better known as pancake syrup)!!!
Hi. I live in Oregon. We have mature sugar maple trees. I saw your cinder block firepit. Looked like around 20? Also what do you use to filter sap with ? Great video. Thx
I was dying inside trying to remember where I’d heard that midi tune before. Glanced down at my arm later and saw my Boognish tattoo and it hit me! ITS THE HIV SONG!
Great video. I also made the mistake of using propane the first year. I still use it but only to finish the syrup. I have an evaporator for the bulk of it. My first batch this year came out really light in colour so I think I messed it up but it tastes ok 🤷
Interesting process, people in rural areas outside my city collect sap from palm trees and leave it for fermentation and consume, its a kind of alcohol.
Never tasted!! Never smoked or consumed alcohol. I've tasted palm fruits though, its very refreshing and sweet, available during summers and it gives relief from heat...its already 41°C here, govt has declared heatwave across central India 😔
This is my first time making syrup from my maple trees. I had to boil it down in batches, but I think I may have reduced it too far. it's VERY crystallized. almost hard. I still have fresh sap. can I add that to what I have and fix it? I probably have about a quart of 'syrup'. it's really good, but I'd have to heat it to use it.
I'm a year behind you :))...did the propane and the stock pot the last couple of weeks - How much faster is the cinder block evaporator - approx. in your opinion? Thanks - I'm just over the Detroit boarder in Ontario :)
@@GoldShawFarm I think it would be neat trying it once or twice. It's more of a powder than cane or beet sugar and doesn't seem worth it to do on a regular basis
You should make wood burning stove with a shed to burn useless stockpile of wood, which you burn without any purpose instead of propane gas , for an environmental point of view.
who tf has wallpaper nowadays. Also I live at sea level it's literally 100% humidity here most of the year, but I'm also not crazy enough to boil that shit indoors, it's not the humidity, it's how hot it'll make the house.
damn that looks tasty. No sugar, no added stuff, no GMO... at the end of the day, uve got healthy and tasty stuff

Awesome addition to our homeschool studies this morning of the Northeast! We are off to appreciate our maple syrup today :)

Wow, I never realized how much work goes into this. Thanks for the extremely informative video! Have a good day!
It ain't easy, but it's totally worth it. Thanks, Leslie!
Mrs. ButterWorth is corn syrup FYI. Look at the ingredient list

I really like vermont maple syrup, a small local shop here (Wellington, New Zealand) sells it.

Best maple syrup video I have ever seen!!
Came for the Maple syrup tips, left with a better grasp on the concept. Thank you! Rancid 🤘
Love the rainbow road remix as the BGM.
Lol i caught that too!
Those canadian do make some legendary zambonnis.

Thanks, Eileen.

I'm not sure. I'm trying to plan a day this summer. I'll let you know as soon as I have it figured out.
@@GoldShawFarmif it coincides with the harpoon brewery's BBQ contest there's a small chance I could make it! Otherwise it's a long haul.
I used to think I wanted to tap trees and make syrup....I think I will just pay extra and let someone else do the work 👍
Ha. That's not a bad strategy.
Be generous, totally love that!
The orange buckets from Home Depot are food grade HDPE.
Out are so talented and resourceful.
Great info. The music drives me a bit bonkers though, it's like being trapped in a Pacman maze!
This is like the laid back Bill Nye the science guy for foodies. Please do a segment on maple candy in the snow? Well done, you earned it :)
This was so cool! (loving your podcast too, btw)
Thank you! I really appreciate that feedback.
Great video, Morgan. This is very well put together. Very thorough, and I think it gives some good things for people to think about.

You just made me hungry!! Next year I am trying maple syrup !!! I think I'm out of time for this year but next year I am all in!! can't wait!!
It's a lot of fun and it's the first "food production" project we have on our homestead each year.
I’m here for the Rancid content.
Did anyone else notice that the background music is the Mario Kart 64 Rainbow Road theme?
Glad all i have to do us go in the store and buy it. I see why it's so expensive now.
Another great video. So interesting to see how that was done.
It's a very fun process!
Hi Great video, just curious on the dimensions of your cooking pans? How deep are they? 8"?
Love the rancid reference
Thanks! I'm glad somebody got that one.

If you do cook your maple syrup indoor. Have the stove fan on

This is my first time doing this. I put in 16 taps yesterday and got 25 or so gallons today. I have no idea if that's good or not

So what’s the difference between getting it from a tree and bowling sugar water?
Great job😊
This was so awesome! Such an interesting process
Thank you, Josh! How is your sugaring going?
Where did you get the spikes, buckets & covers?
How many trees do you need to tap to get 40 gallons of sap?
How do you get the different grades of maple syrup like the fancy
Just watching this in Jan 2022. Great video! New sub here 😀
Thanks for watching!
Excellent! I can almost taste it!!
It was good!
How do you plug the hole in the tree when done?
Lol is this music Rainbow Road from Mario Kart? 😂 I approve 10/10
This is not unlike making sorghum molasses. The real work is in cooking the sap and getting the fire right so you don't scorch it.
Interesting process, people in rural areas outside my city collect sap from palm trees and leave it for fermentation and consume, its a kind of alcohol.
Wow. That sounds pretty interesting. What does it taste like?

You don't need the music... just the message!
How long will unsealed syrup last?
I do not eat fake syrup ever. I didn’t know you were up in vt. I’m in eastern mass. We go up to NH often and get breakfast so we can have real syrup

Where did the pans come from?
you know this guy is legit by the red plaid shirt
Mrs. Butterworth and similar types I don't even consider real maple syrup 🤣

Easily 4-5x faster. And it could be even faster if I had added a few more cinderblocks so that I could fit three trays.
I tried making maple syrup but its a very pale color why would that be?
Yum
Now I'm going to have to go home and make pancakes
Enjoy!
Yummm
Nature made.the cost is well worth.
Have you tried continuing to evaporate it nd make sugar?
I haven't yet. I'm always so worried I'll over cook it. I might try a batch next year. We'll see.

Can you give an estimate of how much wood you go through for that full initial boildown?
Maybe...5-10% of a cord? Just a guess.
how much sap do you want to have before you boil it

If you do it on your house the walks get very sticky. Do not make the mistake I did. 😁
