Growing up in IN, and now in my 40's this song really hits home. Seeing all the farmland replaced by stripmalls and housing developments is insane. I remember travelling up and down US69 and thinking it was so boring looking at cornfields, but man I miss those days now.
She is her music got me thru a lot ..... I got to see her Live a few tears ago when she was on Tour with Stevie Nicks ..... those two got on the stage together and rocked out .... lifetime dream in one night
Another fantastic song that I think not too many responders even know about. Thank you for expanding the reach of this song. About the hard times from the early 80's.
My #1 favorite female Rocker; Pretenders just covered all the bases for me: Punk edged Rock sensibilities, great songwriting, the timeless cool of Chrissie Hyndes' vocals. For a Rocker, try Legalize Me, with Jeff Beck on guitar. A softer one: Show Me, written as a new mother by CH. Way 2 go Ohio...
The song is about her going back to her hometown of Akron and seeing how the beautiful area and farmland had been torn down and replaced with corporate shopping malls by greedy politicians. When she sings "and music filled the air", she is actually saying "Muzak". "Muzak" being that shitty crap they pump through the mall speakers. BTW...GO BROWNS!
Luckily I got to see Chrissy Hynde and Martin Chambers, Chrissy plays Guitar and sings and Martin plays Drums, sadly I missed seeing James "Honeyman" Scott, Guitarist and Pete Farndon, Bassist as they had both OD'd shortly after the first album came out. But seeing her with Iggy Pop at the first show and Neil Young at the second kinda makes up for it. Pretenders are a true musical treasure, lots of great tunes, straight ahead rock and roll, with a sexy female lead. Still.
Excellent Choice!!!! Pretenders are top notch; "Brass In Pocket" "Don't Get Me Wrong" are must listens!!! I always thought Chrissie Hynde was cool as hell. Cool to know you are an Ohioan originally; Parents and 2 younger brothers lived in Columbus for 12 years for Dad's work; it's Buckeye this and Buckeye that, LOL!!!
If you surf the wonderful library of the Pretenders (especially the older stuff) you will find Chrissy Hynde to be a singer of substance with a hypnotic voice, yet edgy She's a rocker and a rebel. Unique music with hooky riffs, catchy memorable songs and great guitar work. Classic stuff. Best albums are Pretenders, Pretenders ll, and, after some major band member tragedy, the album "back on the chain gang". Enjoy.
Check out Joni Mitchell. Chrissie Hynde of the Pretenders names her as an influence. And as far as not holding back as a song writer, Joni Mitchell wrote a song about the music producer David Geffen cruising for gay sex in Paris. That song is called 'Freeman in Paris'. Mazel Tov.
The first two records were better with the original band, especially the first debut album, considered by many, one of the greatest debut albums of all time.
Congrats on hitting 6 K!
Thank you so much love! ❤️
The entire album is gold, all of it.
I love how this song has so many guitar solos! Almost unheard of. One of my favs

Chrissie Hynde is a whole vibe unto herself. Check out Precious, Brass in Pocket, Cuban Slide, and Message of Love
Great picks! The first album has to be in my top 25 of all time. I mentioned Cuban Slide in relation to the hambone rhythm.

@@vespoint I have high hopes for great music to thrive here
I just saw them last night in Chicago and they played Cuban slide as one of their encores. It was a nice surprise

I still have my 45rpm of this. It was the B-side to Back On the Chain Gang.
