    FYI: The Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 Sports is incredibly sharp on the 5D4 and to my surprise works flawlessly with the Canon 1.4iii and 2Xiii Extenders. I was actually blown away with the 5D4's snappy focusing power and image quality using the 2X extender with it. There's very little image degrading if any in most conditions and wide open you have a very professional and high quality 5.6 400mm lens.

      That’s great to hear. Those extenders really add versatility to an already great lens!

    When was choosing a 70-200, I had Canon and Nikon bodies. One big reason I went with the 70-200mm 2.8L IS II was that the 70-200mm 2.8G VR II at minimum focus distance is around 135mm and Canon is a true 200mm.
    Canon III version was unavailable used and it didn’t bring relevant performance updates and Nikon E FL version wasn’t there yet. Though Nikon latest version focuses to 1m and is a true 200mm at that distances.
    I will be receiving a Sony body at some point and if I were to choose today, I would consider the Tamron 70-180mm 2.8 too. It has huge advantages in size and weight, and macro capabilities too.
    About the 70-200mm 2.8 G/G2 versions, I think they suffer substantially from focus breathing. So, making a tight portrait with the Tamron G or G2, it will not be possible.
    I also like how well the 70-200mm 2.8L IS II goes with 2x II and stacked 1.4x III / 2x II extenders.
    Though, I love my 100-400mm 4.5-5.6L IS II and 28-300mm 3.5-5.6L IS too.

      Sounds like you made a good choice. It’s hard to know when you have the right lens, but when you know it you just know it.

    I have owned Gen II Canon version for yrs and love it. I might mention that since the white bothers you both so much, you might consider doing what I did. I opted for Lenscoat covers in black, making the lens less of a standout in public + the covers keep scratches, scuffs and boo boos to a minimum, as well, offering a little protection, an added bonus. Good video.

    • @BillEricPhotography
      @BillEricPhotography  5 років тому

      That’s a great option, thanks for mentioning it. I’ve checked those out but just couldn’t pull the trigger. I’ll have to give them another look.

      @@BillEricPhotography They are a little expensive but they are well made and do camouflage and protect the lens. I have never removed mine all these yrs and have had no issues with them. All lens functions and controls are still available. An added bonus when using them is that your lens no longer feels hot and/or cold to touch during extreme temperatures. I use them on my extenders, as well.

    I have used a 70-200L f2.8 on a portrait shoot and it is a must have lens It is a very versatile lens and is ideal for many different types of shoots.
    Before tamro released the G1 I purchased the then new 70-300L IS USM f4-f5.6 and being canon's first L lens that telescopic and does not focus within the lens. This lens is as sharp as the 70-200L f4 and is small and easy to carry in a jacket pocket. Making it ideal as a travel zoom lens. However the white does make it stand out and do get accused of being a pro, some doors open others shut for me !
    Now bang for buck the Tamron G2 is pretty damn good for the money if purchased new as 4% loss in sharpness over the canon L grade is a Hugh saving in money, however I always try to source used equipment it I can.

      Like we said in the video they are all pretty good at this level it's really just a preference at this point. Also it depends on whatever budget you are working in. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment!

    I have the sony G-Master version of this lens and it's worth every penny if you have lots of pennies.....I agree with the white....makes it look huge...I use gaffers tape to cover up all my labels on the lens and the camera to make it look cheaper (used, beat up) and like a non brand camera....we travel to the islands a lot....

      We’ve been hearing a lot of good things about the Sony G! I do the same things with my gear, try to make it look old and beat up. Until it actually gets old and beat up then I don’t need to pretend anymore 😂

    Eric, how does the 70-200 2.8 II compare to Canon EF 85mm f1.4 for portraits?

    • @BillEricPhotography
      @BillEricPhotography  11 місяців тому

      In my opinion the EF 85 1.4 is significantly better, if you have a subject that’s staying still. For subjects on the move, the versatility of the 70-200 zoom makes it a better option.

    There’s a huge second hand market for the Canon lens, and thats what I will go for. Buy a second hand Canon more or less to the price of a new Tamron.

      Couldn't agree more - the pro lenses will always be a good investment and will lose very little money, where as the cheaper counter parts will drop in price over time..
      I see Canon pro lens glass as a very good investment if bought cheaply enough!!

    If you are considering cost, then you should get the canon. Resale value is superb. Aftermarket lens resale value goes down drastically and does not hold its value more than canon.

    As a fellow 'baldy' I am with that look thing :)
    I shoot both full and crop sensor Canon cameras and apart from my 70-200 and 24-105 zooms, for wildlife I prefer my Canon 200mm 2.8 (all black in colour) and my 300mm f4 yep white neon in colour, but having no hair, I can kind of live with the embarassment. I am totally with you on just how useful the the 70-200 focal length is which is something I only came to really appreciate once I had one. However for me I made two very deliberate choices, first I went for the Canon f4 because it is as well built but lighter and to me the 2.8 wasn't crucial, secondly I bought second hand from a reputable dealer which saves a lot of cash and comes with warranty to be honest, the majority of my L series glass came that way. Keep up the good work.

    • @BillEricPhotography
      @BillEricPhotography  5 років тому

      Thank you John! Good point on the f/4 and yes I forgot to mention the black canon 200 2.8, which is a pretty nice alternative if you don’t need the zoom.

    Today I just made a sharp comparison into my lenses and my Canon L series are always sharpest than any of my Tamron equivalences. Are you sure the Tamron 70-200 is as sharp as the Canon?

    • @BillEricPhotography
      @BillEricPhotography  5 років тому

      I don't own the Canon. I have only used Eric's. In real world use all of these high end lenses are very good. I love my Tamron.

    • @BillEricPhotography
      @BillEricPhotography  5 років тому

      It will be hard to find a difference in sharpness between the canon and Tamron -Eric

    • @lepoloo
      @lepoloo 5 років тому +1

      Ok. Thanks for your reply. I'm planning to replace my 70-200 f4 and I was thinking about a Canon 70-200 f2. 8 L séries but the Tamron you're talking about is less money... I don't really know which way I must go ?

    • @BillEricPhotography
      @BillEricPhotography  5 років тому +1

      See if you can try the tamron 2.8 out for a few days. If you are happy with it then you don’t need more than that. Save the money so you can buy more lenses!

    Hi there, would you guys recommend using this lens with a 2x tele? Or would I be better off with the canon 100-400 L mk2? I have a 5d3 and want to use it for wildlife, deer and larger animals. I just like the idea of have two in one lens with a 70-200 with a 2x tele. Thanks :)

    • @BillEricPhotography

      @@BillEricPhotography thanks, do you know if it effects the image quality or the af? I know it’ll be slightly slower due to it being f5.6 but what about hunting and the accuracy? Thanks :)

    • @BillEricPhotography
