My 2014 / 690 ER has done 46,000 klms - it’s had a new clutch, top end rebuild and all the usual consumables like pads & a brake caliper overall, wheel bearings front and rear, drive chain and sprockets but it’s a beast whatever way you look at it, and it eats T700s for breakfast. The big single cylinder KATOs need a fair bit of maintenance but they have a thrilling edge to their performance that makes the Japanese bikes DULL by comparison. Live on the 690 ER !!!
Hey mate I sold my T7 & built a 500-EXC into a light ADV bike. I live in Cairns & the tracks get steep & tough very quick , my mate had a 690 & sold that for a 500-ADV build too. I have balanced wheels, rubber mounted bars, thick ODI lock on grips & it vibrates less than my mates 690 on road . Fuck the service schedule , drink a beer & change your oil. We absolutely love the 500s as ADV bikes & anything heavier is just not as fun or possible to get to all the places we go
I hear ya mate, horses for courses. I'd probably change my tune if I rode a proper enduro again but the 690 is more than capable pretty much out for the box for what I want to do. But yeah I do get wanting to have an even lighter bike and still be able to extend the range of it. Thanks for the comment 🤘
I was going to say all this! I love mine....I also extend my oil intervals to 50 hours of I have to....but normally 25 hour. The time I did 50 hours the oil still had a lot of red color. Looked good. I also have a 1200gs but live my 450exc 6 days. I've done 400 mile days.....600 kilometers?
I went for the 701 earlier this year. Seat is more comfy than the KTM, and, I have a Husky dealer close by. I fitted the MotoZ Rallz on the rear, much more life than the D606. The Motoz has a magnet inside it, so it attracts nails and screws. I can get 400km's out of the 2 tanks. So Far no issues after 5000 k's. I love the Husky. I'll be riding it to Tasmania in Feb. Heaps of power, very light, you'll love it.
You've always been a dirt bike bloke. That's why you sent the T7 into all sorts of chaos and rode out of it. The 690 brings back ENDURO to the channel. Go forth Joshua-san and prosper! Oh and wheelies, all the wheelies. STAT!
2:20 is exactly why I’m looking to move from my 790r to a 690. I’m not Birchy, and being able to pop the wheel up easier over trail obstacles seems so much easier on the 690.
Well done Josh, IMO the perfect bike for your enduro skills and this great area we live in. I have 2021 model 690 and absolutely love it. I put on the little black bark buster brand bar end weights and they reduce a lot of the bar vibrations. Cheers
Had the T7 for 2 1/2 years then sold it for a Ktm 890 r adv . That bike has given me so much more confidence off road that I’m using it more and more off road than on road . Now I’m looking for a husky 701 ( basically the same as the gas gas or 690 ) due to the weight will suit my single tracking better and being more adventurous. I’m sure you are making the right move if you need some road work but the main part is off road . 👌
Cheers yeah I think so too, having so much fun on the 690. The 890s are out of my price range I was lucky to nab my T7 brand new for 15k Aussie, but I dunno I think I've had my fun on the big bike ready to go lighter and the 690 is a pretty good compromise 🍻
Damn that youtube money ....haha , they are a cool bike and probably very capable but that induction sound hurts me ears haha. I'm giving the T7 3 month. Cheers 4 sharing sir.
I'm not sure if it's the induction or just the can of rocks engine rattle reverbing off the bash plate lol but yeah either way it sucks. Apparently the plastic bash plates help a bit 🤔 3 months! Dunno about that lol... cheers mate
@@MVDBR to me the on bike noise is worse then off bike rattle but i'm sure the fun riding would dull that down a bit. wow do you think less then 3 months.....haha cheers
The 2019 model onwards has an advantage since it had a counterbalance installed in the motor and a lot of the vibrations you feel have been eliminated. Should have gone for a 2019 or later model for that reason. Makes it better on the road
Yeah I knew about the newer ones having an extra counterbalance, but there aren't a great deal of used 690/701 around to choose from unfortunately and this was too good a deal to pass up on. I'll do what I can to mitigate the vibes and just live with it. Cheers 🍻
Been waiting for your first 690 vid. Great one. Steering damper on those bikes are definitely a plus. Front rear tyre pressure i run 22 seems to be good all-round. Hope you have lots of fun.
I have a 701 with the Onega kit and 500exc set up as an ADV bike. You describe the vices of the 690 perfectly. Biggest disappointment is the gearbox. The 701 has a Nova gearbox for this reason. Expensive yes. Only reason I have it installed is because it’s my toy. But it works. No false neutrals and gear ratios that work. The close ratio is heritage from its application in the duke. You will find you will swap from 14 to 15 on the front depending on how rough you’re thinking. Why the 500, well my young bloke comes out too. I use it for enduro work and rough high country work. The fuel range is 300km and it’s proved it worth having the legs/range to not be restricted for fuel range. Yes it slows it down in the tight but I’m happy with the compromise. The 701 is great for its pure capacity. It can take a load. You can carry fuel. It does boot along. My 701 is the one with the head counterbalancer, so not as viby as yours. It does not have the manners/smoothness as a twin. Yet it happily will cross the country. Simpson, no worries. Going back to the 500 you instantly notice the lightness. 180kg back to 140kg wet. It’s big difference. Like most ADV bikes, it’s the compromise that suits you and I understand your rationale perfectly why the 690 works for you.
Thanks for the input mate good to know, I never really added up the numbers but I figured all the gear on the 500 getting it set up for adv would peg it close to the 690 weight wise. But yeah definitely do what works for you. Cheers mate 🤙
ahhh i have the t7 i am so good with the bike i can do what i want but i am also drooling over the 690/701 platform. But i think there is no time for 2 bikes for me now i will drive one and im gonna think the other. haha! Safe travels man. I hope you like this one too.
Congrats on your new 690! My 500exc is my adventure/do it all bike and at least 40kg lighter than the 690. I didn't have to add much more weight to adventurise it, just a bigger tank and comfy seat. Also a lot more simpler and more reliable than a 690. I do a quick easy oil change every 3000 km as im not riding extreme enduro or racing. Ive thought about changing to the 690 but the only real reason would be for the more comfortable road riding sections.
Congrats on the new steed mate, I tried getting on the SM version of the 690 a few years back, I couldn't even get on it! LOL they are mega tall and a much wider seat than a full on enduro bike. It looks proper well sorted, is nice when you know the seller and how they treat their bikes. Are you able to pull the fuse on the ABS to disable it permanently? Oof, that tumble didn't look fun.... but the bike does! 😀 Hahaha... I bet that rain stang a bit at speed just in a t-shirt! 😀
Yeah there are a few tricks to disable the ABS fully but now that I think I know how it works hopefully I'll be right 👌 Yeah the rain stung alright that screen doesn't give much protection 😬 Cheers Pete
Greetings Josh; Well I think its a bloody good idea to have TWO Bikes, each bike can be used for their best; The T7 is great for the long haul adventures and the KTM690 wold be great for your day rides, If the KTM makes you happy, Fk what people say, you are doing it for your own needs; Safe Travels. I made the decision to sell off the Tiger, medical issues means it was time for change and I am still keeping the 900 Street Scrambler for my fun day rides on and off the dirt roads in my area.... David....Adelaide/Kilburn.....Street Scrambler.......nice....
Congratulations on the KTM purchase. I have the Husky 701 which as you say is as near as damn it the same bike. Two years of ownership from new and it's never failed to impress me. I don't have the vibration issues you mention but mine is a 22 plate bike and they did some improvements to the engine balance I understand in 2018 or 2019? I've used mine for tours covering 300 plus miles per day and the standard seat has been surprisingly comfortable. If I switch the ABS off it stays off until I switch it on again but I know on the previous models you had to constantly turn it off after each start of the bike. I have the side stand switch dongle which has worked flawlessly as I understand the side stand switch is quite vulnerable if not bypassed. I'm looking forward to you putting it through it's paces and whether you're on the T7 or the 690 I'll always continue watching as your videos are excellent. 👍
Thanks mate! Yeah I did read about the 2019- onwards having better balancers but this was too good a deal to pass up and I'll live with it. And yeah this bike has the side stand switch dongle 👍 cheers
I have a 2017 690 that I use to commute to work as often as possible. It handles the rough city roads and traffic with ease. I’ve thought about trading it in for a newer version or even an SM model since I rarely get off-road but it’s been very reliable and it’s paid for so I decided to keep it. Instead I mounted up a set of Dunlop missions so I wouldn’t have to change the rear tire so often. I change the oil and filters every 3000 miles and keep a close eye on the level in between because it seemed to use some oil in the first 5500 miles. If you’re looking to get rid of the buzz in the bars I recommend BRP’s rubber mounted risers. I bought a Scott’s damper and these risers as a kit and they have eliminated the buzz through the bars. I ditched the stock muffler for a Yoshimura R77 and added a Rottweiler fueling dongle with a foam air filter. Wider pegs, spin on fuel cap, heated grips and bark busters and that’s about it. It’s been a great bike and I have no regrets on its purchase.
Good stuff bro, nice to know there are reliable ones out there 🤘 Mine does seem to be chewing a little oil but yeah easy enough to keep an eye on it 🍻 cheers
Looking forward to more 690 content. Have had an 890 Adventure R in the garage since 2021 when they came out. Picked up a 701 Enduro a few months ago. Never thought I would say this but If I end up with just one "unicorn" adventure bike it will be the 701 Enduro. Exceptional platform (on and off road). I played around with a 500 EXC platform for a bit - it is a trailer bike in my opinion. I am sure you know the 2019+ 690/701 models have less vibration and you don't have to remove the seat to get to the Rade Garage aux fuel tank. I am looking forward to how the fueling drama plays out and your solution. Perhaps it won't bother you. It is rare here in the states to need more than the stock tanks fuel range.
Yeah I knew about the 2019+ balancers, but these bikes are few and far between here for a decent one in good nick and this was a good deal I couldn't pass up 👍 I think as long as I have the T7 I will use it for camping and the 690 for day rides so don't hold your breath on seeing me lose my shit at the gas station 😅 cheers
A couple of suggestions. You can run the fuel hose from the Radegarage tank to the breather on the fuel cap. The main tank syphons the fuel so no need for the fuel tap and connection to the base of the main tank. Also you don’t need to worry about which order you fill the tanks, I also fitted a quick release fuel connector in the fuel hose under the Radegarage tank. You can then easily remove the tank for maintenance or if you run out of fuel, the tank can be taken by your riding mate to the nearest petrol station, as happened to me. I would consider trimming the front of your seat to expose the fuel cap.
Awesome stuff mate. Ya can never own too many motorcycles. Give the ProGrip Foam Rally Grips a crack mate. They are awesome .... also help with the pins and needles in the hands. Cheers for sharing
Haha yeah I have no doubt there will be some things, but so far just tinkering with it I enjoy how easy it is to work on. A lot in common with the 500. Cheers 🤙
Fork no- long distance touring is for old men and I’m only 50😂, but I will ride it an hour or so on road to get to trails. The T7 for longer old man rides
Looks like to much fun. Great video. I mentioned before that I just sold my T7 and was looking at the 690, but to expensive at the moment. Settled for the 390, I know go ahead and laugh, honestly though, I'm having a blast on it. Feels like a real toy compared to the T7. Looking forward to more content. One thing is, I haven't heard a slip-on that sounds much better than the OEM. Some guys are spending $600+ and they sound the same.
Looking forward to see what crash bars or radiator guards u go with. Just finished repairing my 701 radiator after a drop, all shifted to one side. Love your channel!
hi, I am surprised that you did not buy this motorcycle instead, I sold my T 700 at the end of August 2023 to buy an AJP PR7 160kg 64hp 17 L fuel tank suspension of more than 30 cm all gives a motorcycle much easier to drive off-road with luggage, camping tent, on roads I drive at a cruising speed of 110km/h. it is an adventure motorcycle par excellence. the saddle is super comfortable. a smile on his face all the time. Once again, weight is decisive when you go solo with luggage on off-road trips and in the event of a fall in difficult technical areas you don't have to struggle to pick up the bike. see you soon
Yeah so I was originally going to keep the 500EXC but circumstances changed. I may have gone for a 701 if I knew I was getting rid of the little bike. But yeah at the moment it's not so much about picking up the T7 (it sucks but it's doable) but more about terrain like rocky & sandy shit. I can just charge in on the 690 without hesitation whereas with the T7 I'm very cautious at times haha. But yeah as I get older, picking up the T7 will be more and more of a struggle and less and less worth it 😅 Still love it though and don't want to get rid of her 🍻 cheers
Welcome to the 690 world buddy! Absolutely love mine - I think it'll be mint for the type of stuff you get into... edit: Steering damper is helpful on the 690 - especially on the pavement to calm down that front end....
On the 2019 model the RADE aux tank actually runs the filler externally between the seat and ignition so the seat doesn't need to be filled to fuel up. I also leave the fuel tap open all tge time with no issues as gravity takes care of balancing to fuel drain on the front and rear tanks. But if you do that, fill the rear first before the front or the front drains into the rear. I know you have the ABS dongle but a cheat is to put a couplenof washers under the rear ABS sensor. I just moves the ABS sensor out far enough to permanently disable both front and rear so you don't need to worry about it. Easy to swap them out if you want to on long road rides if you want to.
Thanks mate yeah might end up doing that with the ABS. Is there any difference between doing that and removing the fuses? Seems like removing the fuses would be easier to switch back and forth 🤔
@@MVDBR I don't think there is much difference however I have big monkey hands that struggle to pull out the fuses so for me its easier to carry a little torx key in the handlebar bag and unscrew the bolt and add a couple of spring washers. Same effort as letting out a couple of PSI.
I've had my 2014 690 for 5 years now, Bought it used. Had some problems with the powersupplie for the ECU, but other then that it's been only normal mainenance. If you do a lot of highspeed tarmac on enduro- or gravel tires it's a good thing to have a steeringdampner. Because over 100 km/h it can get wobbley. A minus for the KTM vs the t7 is breakdown in the bush. You can't fit and or replace a major electronical part on the bike with out it thinking it's been stolen. With th T7 you can fix the most things with a steelwire, ducktape and a slegde, and I like that.
I went with a 501 since I have an 890. My thoughts these days are to go with a T-7 and possibly sell the 890 and 501. You are right about the 501’s limitations for an ADV bike and I’m finding that the lightweight ADV bike scenario sounds good, until I have to ride 500 miles on the pavement first. Like I commented on MADTV’s latest T-7 video, I began riding on Yamahas, I should go out on Yamaha. We’ll see. Good stuff sir! 👍
Congratulations mate 🍺 Wheelies for days . What shall this one be called , we've got Black Betty , what about Orange Puff 😁 . Looking forward to seeing how you tackle the harder stuff on this monster . Cheers 🍻
hey Fella i have the 2022 model 690 R and now have around 1000k on it , i have crash bars ,bark busters , big pegs , its the double balanced shift motor , which is pretty smooth . its not a adventure bike , but a big trailbike .its fun bike to ride . mine does run about 4.5l /100 ks . and the gearbox is good the new one is heaps better than the old model .have fun cheers steve/ Geraldton
I've got a '17 690 and love it. Get anti vibration inserts for the handlebars. I use Highway Dirt Bikes ones and with the Scotts anti-vibration mount, the bars basically don't buzz at all now. I've got a Perun tail rack and my luggage there doesn't get in the way of the fuel filler. The gearbox is very similar to my old 640 Adv's 5 speed, cruising rpm's are the same between the two. If you look at the drop between 5th and 6th gears, it's only 300rpm or so, and it would be nice if KTM fixed that. My riding partner has a T7 and picking that bike up off road really sucks! The 690 is SO much lighter, over 100lbs. I bought mine basically kitted out with rally fairing, Safari tank, etc, etc, which makes it a much nicer adv bike, it's still not as good as the T7 on freeway, but it's so much better off road it's worth it, at least for me.
Good stuff mate yeah I have been looking at the bar weight inserts 🤘 Yeah the T7 is poo when you drop it, I'm so much more comfortable on the 690 when the going gets rough. Horses for courses as they say both awesome bikes. Cheers thanks for the comment 🍻
m8 no need to explain. We all either have or wish we had different bikes for different things. I think most people watch your channel because you're a normal dude that gets up to some shit now and then. Congrats on the 690.
Get yourself a 701 LR, same bike, better motor with OEM front fuel tanks. No issue with valve clearance like the old motor, more power, less vibrations. Put a Rada Garage screen on it and it will be as good as the T7 on road as well.
@@TheHornetRider1 cheers Mark, I appreciate the comment even if it was accidental 😎 at first I thought you and nerb were coming back to Qld but then my hopes were dashed 🙈
Put a washer on the front ABS sensor to disable it. Funny story, I met Phil out of the trails near Jimna one day and he was on his new 501 and I was on my new Sherco 500. We chatted about this multiple bikes. Nice bloke.
Gee's, Josh...back on a KTM...certainly glad you didn't get a "little" bike...you would have gotten sick of a 300 or 400, real quick...even tho I wouldn't buy one, I think you've made the right choice, for you :) Betty can have well deserved rest... Good that you know the history of the bike, nice extras, AND Pivot Pegz....nice..I like mine. A custom made hole in the seat is a great idea...unique. Cheers.
Cool as cat poo 😎 Since Biker Bits Angus got his Gas Gas 700 I’ve been paying a bit of attention to these big singles 🧐 I do like the Husky 701 but like yourself it might come down to what’s available when I’m in the mood 💁♂️ My issue is that I have a ‘21 WR450 sitting in the shed with about 40 hours on it and I’ve honestly barely even started it since buying the T7….. I need something in between if ya picking up what I’m putting down 😉 I blamed you for the reason I got the T7 so I might use that same excuse again hahaha
Yeah mate if I could go back in time I'd more than likely choose the 701 over the 500, such capable bikes and good enough for what I want to do while still being pleasant on the road bits. You bastards are turning me into an influencer 😅 that would be ok if Yamaha/KTM were giving me something hahaha. Cheers Cal 🤘
I couldn't do it man, I'm sure they're great but holy hell they look hideous. I guess it depends what you want to do with the bike but I just couldn't bring myself to go that route 😭 cheers
@@MVDBR they certainly dont look pretty but fantastically functional. The twin tanks and plastics swap very easily so its simple enough to add the extra fuel space when needed and keep the bike looking pretty the rest of the time. I think I'll end up fitting the RG air filter and the extra storage space for puncture repair stuff
Hello Josh, I did exactly the opposite. I sold my 690 enduro r and bought a 1090 R and a Husky 501. In enduro I could not follow the rhythm of the group and on the road the vibrations were really uncomfortable to go far without counting all the rest. For me, it's still a very good bike that does everything well, but it can't replace an enduro bike or a maxi trail bike. Of course, this is just my opinion. Greetings from France Denis
Great choice mate put the 14 sprocket back on mate best all round gearing for that bike,+ you can use power alone in third for wheeling and just a slight bounce to pull other gears 😂
We all have different wants man. Can't tell you why people buy 500's over the 690s for the kind of ADV'ing I mostly see them used for. I have a big triumph 1200 scrambler gravel hoon & daily, 06 300 EXC shitter/training bike but my serious adv/enduro/desert bike is a CRF450L for one simple reason - TRUST. Took my last XR600R and drowned it in mangrove water & mud up to the tank cap north of Cooktown, following which it finished the full cape york loop no worries, also riden the (BMW) Huskky TR650 out all through little/big desert, finke, arkarula etc and I simply don't trust a number of design points of KTM 690/701's regardless of how well I'd be able to prep/replace known issues, carry spares etc. I only get time for maybe one 5-15 day trip a year and like to make it somewhere new/remote/different so oil change intervals really aren't a huge deal when the bike is for that trip with a +20L tank on it and then a weekend/overnight sub 1500km-a-trip hard adv or enduro bike the rest of the year. It is a very personal thing but I prep all my and often my mates bikes for big trips plus I often have track ambition bigger than my skill level when exploring alone also so often get into hairy shit when out for day/weekend rides. The freedom to rip a single giant loop mojave/coyotoe bag off and have a proper enduro bike to skull drag up a rock step I shouldn't have gone down and the fun of challening myself in that kinda stuff in new places is worth the 1.5-2km oil change to me but it isn''t how many people ride and that's completely fair. Trust in the bike and the freedom to able to get out of up to proper hard enduro stuff by lifting the bike out solo is why I didn't buy a 690/701 but if I had to sell all three of my bikes tomorrow a 701 would be about the only option to serve as a commuter still without being a right pain in the ass so it's a no brainer in that respect :)
@@HoagesMotoyeah mate I hear ya, it's a real shame they're plagued with so many issues, they would be such a great unicorn for so many people. Anyway hopefully I get in some fun on mine before it shits the bed 😅 cheers
I run a 14/48 in Colorado and feel like it'll run all day on the Interstate at 80MPH. I like the lower resulting first gear and for my riding, it let's me run second gear more consistently. Agree that a longer 6th gear would be nice though...
Hi josh i got 701 and i found that when i am out with the boys on t7 the fuel range is not a million miles away , they seem to need fuel around the same time , i dont have an auxiliary tank, Great vids cheers Kev
The 690 is such a sick bike! We go back to road riding I’ll be thinking hard about getting a 690. Really wish Husky or KTM would deck the 690 out with the old LR fuel tank and a Dakar fairing, THEN it would be the T7 killer😎
Some times I think 5th is top gear then find 6th, got 15/48 gearing. Have the ABS dongle and I don't have any problems with the front brake. Ive seen a new 690 with ODI grips, probably only available from KTM.
Yeah I guess 15/48 is the same as 14/45... not sure about the lock on grips I know some of the KTM/Husky bikes came with them stock but as far as I know they don't make any for ride-by-wire throttles. Be great if they did though!
Great choice. I bought my 690 last year and absolutely love it. It isn’t perfect but so much fun. I was also interested in knowing what screen you have on yours? I have been looking around and haven’t decided yet. You mentioned it, but because I don’t speak Queenslander, I couldn’t make out the brand 😂. Cheers
I look forward to seeing Nat ride it. I know it's too tall, but it's lighter than the 390, and so much more clearance. Have been considering a 701. But am leaning towards keeping the WR250R for a few more years.
@@MVDBR Thanks. I had the 390, which first brought me to your channel. I'm watching your hitting the road video now. I have the same idea of hauling on a bike carrier, and stealth camperizing my truck bed. Short term trips. My WR250R is close to the weight of the 690, so will catch your future videos on the setup. Best of Luck to you with the new venture.
I've got as couple of mates who are on the T7/T7WR and as much as I wanted to love them I couldn't get past the weight. Absolutely beautifully refined, but lacking if you're a bit of a hoon or like to hop the odd log. Be interested to see how you get on with the 690 :-) I'd definitely be looking at an HDPE skidplate, that rattle is obnoxious!
Great comparison against the T7. The T7 like the Africa Twin is heavy and top heavy at that. The T7 is very tall and too much for me. The Africa Twin easy to get my feet down but cramped riding position with high pegs relative to the seat. I bought a 2019 690 and it’s excellent even with 8,500 miles on it. The later engine is very smooth with an extra balancer shaft. Sure the power pulses are what you’d expect from a single but for 100kph cruising really good. The later bike has a shorter seat so the Rade Garage range extender tank fits with its filler proud and easily accessed. That bike is in the US and bought for a 4,000 mile trip next year. I bought a 701 Husky on the strength of the 690 and it’s superb. With stock air filter and exhaust it’s pleasantly quiet. It might replace my 890 Adventure….. (my other half says I don’t need more bikes. She’s right but when did need trump want?!). Happy riding, Ian
Hi Josh Nice review I also went to the Dark Side I just need a 40 mm lower link bad when your feet can't touch the ground. Ever thing you said is True Thanks have a Great Christmas & all the best for 2024 Cheers
my opinion on your query between folk picking 500 and 690 and then extending the 500 for 'adventure': I dare say and this is from talking to lots of folk, height of 690 is one thing as you know - yeah many guys i know fit lower kits but then hate the bike (it looks shi7e too once lowered), another xx hp and about45 kg - lots i know can not face it and are more than wary after seeing people struggle with the 690 in places that may be similar to their zones, 690 platform operates better at speed as well as you will find out - TBF if you cannot physically and mentally match the bike, the 690 is a pretty scary bas7ard when ridden hard, i know this myself and i love it for what it is BUT very few can use a 690 and if folk are on the fence the weight is another reason to go 500/501 - i dont believe in making my 500 into some long tour thing but i know people with a long rack on that mounts to the frame, they remove their shi7 and they are back to the 500 at the destination and have all the crap they want - i have to think about my journey a whole lot more than them....... killer bike - yeah maintenance every 1k is what it is but its a 15 minute job with a beer, i dont have an issue with it myself for what the bike gets me in return. 690 are amazing machines , i just think a lot see them as too much dirtbike and have this fear about that. So then they go the 500 which is an utterly unreal bike (with shi77y downsides on road but so what) OR they go and buy some big bloody twin thinking it is safer to own a T7 / similar over a 690, that makes little sense to me but that is a different discussion
Yeah mate I owned a 2015 500EXC for a few years and absolutely loved it, but I'm not a hard enduro racer and I don't ride that hard so the 690 is a pretty decent compromise for me. Appreciate the comment, cheers 🙌
Got a 500 and 701 😂 Riding to the trails on the 500 i wish i had the 701. Once on the trails i wish i had the 500. Probably best the 701 is a little slower on unknown trail than the beasty 500
have you taken seat off and found map power ajustment knob can run low grade fuel to get home or more power, i had 690 it was great fun, enjoy new bike
Becareful josh coz you become more confident with these bike ,there not maybe I can do that narly hill ,there point and do the narly hill ,T 7 s want momentum but these honestly just point and open the throttle .
a 2019+ 690 is whole different motor from the pre 690. you wanna to try a 2019+ 690. that said, i have a 2014 690 (with 2017 690 duke piston/cylinder), converted to supermoto and 2021 690 enduro. i love both 690 bikes and i would buy another 690. change rear sprocket to 48t for better offroad riding. get abs dongle. you can run 15 psi or less. you can get electronic cruise control from mccruise. get plastic bash plate and line with dynamat for quieter bike.
@@MVDBR cruise control is mint. you can also get rade garage bash plate with storage. I feel that it actually lowers center of gravity and protects rear brake and shift levers.
Yes same year model, too . Last ride out, I had too much fun and blew both the front forks. #Simovision5894 has offered to help rebuild ! He's a good man.
500exc v 690r... weight.. 30 odd Kgs difference, and more reliable/trust in the bike. Put a spacer on the rear abs pick up... no more abs... no issues 😂 Hope yours is reliable...
Yeah but as far as I can tell once you add all the adv gear to the 500 the weight difference wouldn't be all that much 🤷♂ I don't think Phil's had too many issues with this one so hopefully it's a good'un. Cheers 🍻
Very true mate, they are fun exciting bikes. Still loving mine 😍
You got yourself a cracking bike, Josh!
I just rode one and they're a bloody weapon 🤙
Cheers J they sure are, so much power. I mean same as the T7 but in that little lightweight package it definitely makes a difference 🤘
I think it's also about total hours before rebuild too it's quite a difference and up to 200 hour oil change intervals is a big difference
400kms! What's the total fuel capacity of your Husky? Cheers
Yes!!!! Keen to see your thoughts over the coming months🤙
Me too! Thanks man 🤙🤙
Good to see you back on a ktm enduro! Looking forward to this summer vids. Cheers
Yeah man gonna be some fun! Cheers
Congratulations Josh. I’m thinking this bike suits your riding style perfectly. Come hell or high water, keep the T7.
I'll try mate 👌👌 cheers
You've always been a dirt bike bloke. That's why you sent the T7 into all sorts of chaos and rode out of it. The 690 brings back ENDURO to the channel. Go forth Joshua-san and prosper! Oh and wheelies, all the wheelies. STAT!
Can't stop the wheelies haha I'm gonna lose my license for sure 🥴😎 Cheers G!
2:20 is exactly why I’m looking to move from my 790r to a 690. I’m not Birchy, and being able to pop the wheel up easier over trail obstacles seems so much easier on the 690.
It's very confidence inspiring 🤙
Well done Josh, IMO the perfect bike for your enduro skills and this great area we live in. I have 2021 model 690 and absolutely love it. I put on the little black bark buster brand bar end weights and they reduce a lot of the bar vibrations. Cheers
Those look like a fairly cheap option, thanks mate 🤘
😬
The 2019 model onwards has an advantage since it had a counterbalance installed in the motor and a lot of the vibrations you feel have been eliminated. Should have gone for a 2019 or later model for that reason. Makes it better on the road
Yeah I knew about the newer ones having an extra counterbalance, but there aren't a great deal of used 690/701 around to choose from unfortunately and this was too good a deal to pass up on. I'll do what I can to mitigate the vibes and just live with it. Cheers 🍻
Congrats on the new addition to your garage Josh 👍🤟
Thanks Marty!
Sweet new bike Josh, looking forward to seeing a lot more new adventures with it.
Thanks Jeff! 🤙🤙
Been waiting for your first 690 vid. Great one. Steering damper on those bikes are definitely a plus. Front rear tyre pressure i run 22 seems to be good all-round. Hope you have lots of fun.
Cheers Simo! 🤙
Congrats on the bike look foward to seeing where you take it 😎👍
Cheers Crug!
Wow! Bro! Awesome 👌 Mate!
What a trip, great moovie as usual, looking forward to the 690 shenanigans 😀
Another girlfriend for Hopper's harem Juddy 😅🤘 Catch up for some skids soon I hope mate
@MVDBR Absofreakenlutely my Brother from another Mother, I can't wait...😊👍
Thanks mate yeah you can only ride one at a time 🤷♂👌
Congrats on your new 690!
Yeah good stuff mate, as I said whatever works for ya! After coming from a T7 this thing feels about as light as I would ever need 😅👌 Cheers
Congrats on the new bike brother!
Thanks Craig!
Hahaha...
That's it mate, I don't have money to spend on bikes I don't really want to own, plus life's too short they tell me. Cheers David 🤙
Great review, like your honest, unbiased opinions 👌
Cheers Phil 🤙
Also you don’t need to worry about which order you fill the tanks,
I also fitted a quick release fuel connector in the fuel hose under the Radegarage tank. You can then easily remove the tank for maintenance or if you run out of fuel, the tank can be taken by your riding mate to the nearest petrol station, as happened to me. I would consider trimming the front of your seat to expose the fuel cap.
Good tips mate, cheers 🍻
Awesome stuff mate.
Ya can never own too many motorcycles.
Give the ProGrip Foam Rally Grips a crack mate.
They are awesome .... also help with the pins and needles in the hands.
Cheers for sharing
Thanks Glenn, how well do those hold up? Get a decent life out of them?
@MVDBR yeah mate.
Tough AF.
Best grip I have ever used.

Badass! You will learn to hate a few things on the 690, but overall, you'll be in love with it.
Haha yeah I have no doubt there will be some things, but so far just tinkering with it I enjoy how easy it is to work on. A lot in common with the 500. Cheers 🤙
Nice bike buddy ! Enjoy 👍
Thanks mate!
Hello from Vietnam. Your chanel is amazing I love it very much. Wish you happy and successful. Love and hug

Nothing wrong with having variety. Even if it costs an arm and a leg. 😂 What a sick spot you were perched up at the start of the video.
Cheers! Yeah was a nice cool spot on that stinking hot day. Just editing a video of my sweet new B&B case saver 😁👌
looking forward to seeing it@@MVDBR
I have the 500 exc and t7 , perfect combination- if I couldn’t have both I would have a 690/701
Yeah fair enough mate, my guess is your 500 isn't set up for long distance touring though 😎
Fork no- long distance touring is for old men and I’m only 50😂, but I will ride it an hour or so on road to get to trails. The T7 for longer old man rides
😁👌
You should try 2019+ 690/701. Double balancer is a huge improvement.
Thanks yeah I have heard it's an improvement 🤙
If you want to fix the gearbox ratios , put the primary gear from the Supermotard model, it’ll make a huge difference.
Thanks mate will look into this 🤙
@@MVDBR it’s the gears from the crankshaft to the gearbox, my 701 motard had a great spread and 205kph top end.
😳 awesome mate. No doubt cost a fortune though and made of money I am not, unfortunately 😥
@@MVDBR yes, I feel your pain haha, but information is king.
Getting my 690 was the start of a love affair! You are gonna love it mate.
Seems like yours has been pretty reliable Scotty, hope I have the same luck. Cheers mate 🍻

Great stuff.
My 501 light adventure is gone and 690 in the shed
I forgot you tried the Husky 😬 But yeah the 690 makes a lot more sense 👌 cheers mate
No laughing here mate, if ya having fun who cares what anyone else thinks 💪 Are you talking about a slip on for the 390? Or the 690?
I'm looking at slip-ons for the 390. Thank You.
Yeah you really have to get rid of that resonator in the swingarm to get any noise out of them
Looking forward to see what crash bars or radiator guards u go with. Just finished repairing my 701 radiator after a drop, all shifted to one side. Love your channel!
Thanks mate yeah eagerly awaiting their arrival 🙏
hi, I am surprised that you did not buy this motorcycle instead, I sold my T 700 at the end of August 2023 to buy an AJP PR7 160kg 64hp 17 L fuel tank suspension of more than 30 cm all gives a motorcycle much easier to drive off-road with luggage, camping tent, on roads I drive at a cruising speed of 110km/h. it is an adventure motorcycle par excellence.
the saddle is super comfortable. a smile on his face all the time.
Josh just watch out for the death wobble from the front end ,keep an eye on the top clamp centre bolt maybe tighten it then drill it and lock wire it
Rito 🤙
Great bike,ball of fun.I owned the 2014/2020 models.No longer have them.I agree with owning a 690 above a 500.Enjoy.
Cheers Bruce 🤘🤘
Welcome to the 690 world buddy! Absolutely love mine - I think it'll be mint for the type of stuff you get into... edit: Steering damper is helpful on the 690 - especially on the pavement to calm down that front end....
Thanks man, yeah I will see how I go without the damper but I'll keep it in my box of bits just in case 🤘
@@MVDBR you are gonna love that whip man! I'm gonna join your patreon to help you fund all the bits sir -- looking forward to the 690 vids mate!
@@breeno59 thanks Steve! 🙏🙏
A sledge? 😅 Cheers mate thanks for the comment 🤙
Nice one Josh! Looking forward to your 690 adventures! 😁👍
Cheers Rick 🍻
I went with a 501 since I have an 890.
My thoughts these days are to go with a T-7 and possibly sell the 890 and 501. You are right about the 501’s limitations for an ADV bike and I’m finding that the lightweight ADV bike scenario sounds good, until I have to ride 500 miles on the pavement first.
Like I commented on MADTV’s latest T-7 video, I began riding on Yamahas, I should go out on Yamaha.
We’ll see.
Good stuff sir! 👍
Yeah 100% mate the 501 I think should be left as an enduro. Good luck with the decision, the T7 is a mint bike 👌
Congratulations mate 🍺 Wheelies for days . What shall this one be called , we've got Black Betty , what about Orange Puff 😁 . Looking forward to seeing how you tackle the harder stuff on this monster . Cheers 🍻
I don't think KTMs warrant names, they're just fkn monsters 😎 Then again maybe Wheelie Wendy 😅 Cheers mate
hey Fella i have the 2022 model 690 R and now have around 1000k on it , i have crash bars ,bark busters , big pegs , its the double balanced shift motor , which is pretty smooth . its not a adventure bike , but a big trailbike .its fun bike to ride . mine does run about 4.5l /100 ks . and the gearbox is good the new one is heaps better than the old model .have fun cheers steve/ Geraldton
Cheers Steve glad ya enjoying the 690 👌
I've got a '17 690 and love it.
Thank you brother 🤙🤙
Congratulations Josh, you know I would watch your videos twice if you bought a 990 lol. Should be fun videos coming down the pipe😊
You know I couldn't handle a 990 mate 😎😅
Good shit, Josh! New bike day!
Exciting! 😎🍻
Get yourself a 701 LR, same bike, better motor with OEM front fuel tanks. No issue with valve clearance like the old motor, more power, less vibrations. Put a Rada Garage screen on it and it will be as good as the T7 on road as well.
Hmm ok let me consult with the money tree... computer says no 😅 yeah mate if coin wasn't an issue we'd all have better bikes 🍻

Nice. I loved from the 690 to the T7 for more distance, etc. From CT, U.S.A.
Yeah the T7 is definitely gonna be better for longer rides, cheers Charles 🍻
Gee's, Josh...back on a KTM...certainly glad you didn't get a "little" bike...you would have gotten sick of a 300 or 400, real quick...even tho I wouldn't buy one, I think you've made the right choice, for you :)

And yeah mate I briefly toyed with the idea of another 500 but I knew I'd hate riding it pretty quick, once I was reminded how uncomfortable they are
Cool as cat poo 😎
Since Biker Bits Angus got his Gas Gas 700 I’ve been paying a bit of attention to these big singles 🧐 I do like the Husky 701 but like yourself it might come down to what’s available when I’m in the mood 💁♂️
My issue is that I have a ‘21 WR450 sitting in the shed with about 40 hours on it and I’ve honestly barely even started it since buying the T7….. I need something in between if ya picking up what I’m putting down 😉
I blamed you for the reason I got the T7 so I might use that same excuse again hahaha
Fastco bar inserts (make sure to get the ones that suit handguards) sorted out that handlebar vibe for me on my drz400e
Thanks man! I'll look into those for sure 🤘
I’ve got the same bike 2018 690 Enduro R that I’ve recently picked up. I’ve got the twin safari tanks to fit. 2x9litres with easy access fill.
Great stuff Josh enjoy mate 👍🍺💯
G'day Les! Cheers mate hope you have a good Xmas bro 🍻
Good one josh 👍🏍️💨
Thanks Johnny 🤙🤙
Hello Josh,
I did exactly the opposite.
Greetings from France
Denis
Yeah I get you mate 🍻 I'm not particularly wanting to do group rides with enduro bikes so for me this bike is a great addition to the stable 🙏
Great choice mate put the 14 sprocket back on mate best all round gearing for that bike,+ you can use power alone in third for wheeling and just a slight bounce to pull other gears 😂
Yeah Jimmy the 14 is already back on and I agree, it seems to be the sweet spot 🤙 Cheers mate
Congrats.
Was gonna go up from 450RL to a 701 but jumped it and went with the Norden 901 Expedition.
But I will get a 690/701 eventually.
Enjoy! 🏍️💨
Cheers Luke! 🍻
PS - Congrats obvs, the 690/701 platform is such a laugh to ride - wicked bikes :)
Wow that thing must be revving pretty high at 80mph!
Hi josh i got 701 and i found that when i am out with the boys on t7 the fuel range is not a million miles away , they seem to need fuel around the same time , i dont have an auxiliary tank, Great vids cheers Kev
Oh really, I will have to test that out. Thanks mate 🤙
I've seen some really good reviews for flexx bars and I'm sure they will help a lot with the vibe from the 690.
Thanks man!
Josh good going mate ,being as you never replied to any of my comments ,I think you've done well mate .try the oil thing mate ye
👋🤠👍
Yer I'm a bit slow with the replies, too busy riding 😜
The 690 is such a sick bike! We go back to road riding I’ll be thinking hard about getting a 690. Really wish Husky or KTM would deck the 690 out with the old LR fuel tank and a Dakar fairing, THEN it would be the T7 killer😎
Just get a 701 LR, ya fkn KTM fanboi! 😅 Cheers man yeah they are a great bike (so far)
Cheers
Screens. For. Bikes. 😉 www.screensforbikes.com
I look forward to seeing Nat ride it. I know it's too tall, but it's lighter than the 390, and so much more clearance.
Have been considering a 701. But am leaning towards keeping the WR250R for a few more years.
Nat? She hasn't worked here in years bro 🥴 Yeah the WR250R vs 701 is all about reliability vs power 😏
@@friedaspyder8485 cheers mate 🤘🤘
Mate even though its pumpkin, I’ll still stay subscribed.
I still would like a husky 701 or gas gas 700.
Dunno about the Gas Gas those plastics look like a pain in the arse but the 701 yeahhh 🤙
I've got as couple of mates who are on the T7/T7WR and as much as I wanted to love them I couldn't get past the weight. Absolutely beautifully refined, but lacking if you're a bit of a hoon or like to hop the odd log. Be interested to see how you get on with the 690 :-)
I'd definitely be looking at an HDPE skidplate, that rattle is obnoxious!
Yeah these little 690/701s are definitely a hoon bike! Love that side of them 🤙 And yeah I agree the noise is horrible. Cheers 🍻
Hahah good on you mate and yeah we're only here once, ya gotta do what ya gotta do 👌 Cheers Ian
No regrets after getting a '23 701. Good compromise on weight and power.
Good stuff mate yeah you seem to be having a lot of fun on yours 🤙 cheers
Hi Josh
Nice review I also went to the Dark Side
I just need a 40 mm lower link bad when your feet can't touch the ground.
Ever thing you said is True
Thanks have a Great Christmas & all the best for 2024 Cheers
Cheers Barry you too mate 🍻🍻
Put a washer behind the rear ABS sensor and it cuts out front and rear ABS 100%
Cheers 🤙🤙
Nice bike Josh, try 14/48 gearing mate and it should be sweet. I’ll message you next week, not working so let’s grab a coffee
That seems like pretty low gearing! Would be mint off-road tho. No worries mate I'm pretty flat out atm but should be able to fit ya in 😅 #nohomo
Nice score mate 👍
Cheers Dave 🤙
my opinion on your query between folk picking 500 and 690 and then extending the 500 for 'adventure': I dare say and this is from talking to lots of folk, height of 690 is one thing as you know - yeah many guys i know fit lower kits but then hate the bike (it looks shi7e too once lowered), another xx hp and about45 kg - lots i know can not face it and are more than wary after seeing people struggle with the 690 in places that may be similar to their zones, 690 platform operates better at speed as well as you will find out - TBF if you cannot physically and mentally match the bike, the 690 is a pretty scary bas7ard when ridden hard, i know this myself and i love it for what it is BUT very few can use a 690 and if folk are on the fence the weight is another reason to go 500/501 - i dont believe in making my 500 into some long tour thing but i know people with a long rack on that mounts to the frame, they remove their shi7 and they are back to the 500 at the destination and have all the crap they want - i have to think about my journey a whole lot more than them....... killer bike - yeah maintenance every 1k is what it is but its a 15 minute job with a beer, i dont have an issue with it myself for what the bike gets me in return.
The 701 seat doesn't cover the rade garage tank. And better looking 😂
😜😜
Got a 500 and 701 😂
Riding to the trails on the 500 i wish i had the 701. Once on the trails i wish i had the 500. Probably best the 701 is a little slower on unknown trail than the beasty 500
Lol yep that's about the size of it 🤙cheers
have you taken seat off and found map power ajustment knob can run low grade fuel to get home or more power, i had 690 it was great fun, enjoy new bike
Cheers David yeah I know about the little knob thing, pretty sure mines set to wild but I haven't had a play with it yet 🤙
This feels like the old times have returned
Can’t wait for more adventures on the new girl
Bring back Emmsey I say😂
Lol 😁
Mmmm cruise control would be mint 🍻
@@MVDBR cruise control is mint. you can also get rade garage bash plate with storage. I feel that it actually lowers center of gravity and protects rear brake and shift levers.
Yes same year model, too . Last ride out, I had too much fun and blew both the front forks. #Simovision5894 has offered to help rebuild ! He's a good man.
😬 yikes
The D 606 has good run flat capabilities
So I saw hahaha
Hi mate, can’t you let me know what front screen is fitted? Cheers
9:10 watch the vid mate 😜
500exc v 690r... weight.. 30 odd Kgs difference, and more reliable/trust in the bike.
Put a spacer on the rear abs pick up... no more abs... no issues 😂
Hope yours is reliable...
Yeah but as far as I can tell once you add all the adv gear to the 500 the weight difference wouldn't be all that much 🤷♂ I don't think Phil's had too many issues with this one so hopefully it's a good'un. Cheers 🍻
Dam, I was already liking man bike swags 690 and now you. Might be time to part with some cash and swap out the 450x
Time will tell if it's gonna be a reliable bike mate, probably won't live up to the Honda tho! Cheers 🤘
Nice! Enjoy
Cheers!
