I'm 14 who plays footy. I've been concussed, which gave me short term memory loss, and I don't know what happened to me in my match, but I was knocked out and taken by ambulance. I've torn my hamstring, because my team made finals and I wanted to work harder on myself, I've torn my middle finger ligament in a marking accident, and I got into a fight and bent my index finger. In conclusion, Footy is a tough sport and you got to be tough to play it, and my injuries only makes me a better player (except for the concussion, that was a pain)
Hi Chaddington, nice reactions again. These were a mixture of legal and illegal bumps and tackles. Essentially, you are not allowed to make contact with the head. This will result in a free kick, at least. Anything other than an accident (such as a clash of heads) will result in a report and likely several weeks suspension (for subsequent games; there is no send off rule or sin bin). I think you might have missed the fact that the commentator mentioned that the two guys involved in the episode of what you referred to as unsportsman-like behaviour were brothers playing for opposing teams. One tackled the other and the tackler came off second best, so his brother let him know about it. Just an extension of what I am sure used to happen in the backyard over many years. Even if this were not the case, that kind of behaviour would not raise an eyebrow and would not be punished. It is all part of the game.
All the older footage you see was when head high bumps were more common, not always penalised and almost encouraged by coaches. Umpires were also more lenient. Times have changed !
First! Back when footy was played in the 1900s in black and white, there wasn’t many collision rules and you could kinda just go for it. Now days there is a lot more safety precautions and rules for contact. It is very common for there to be collisions in games but if you intentionally bash someone out and you weren’t going for the ball, you can get penalised for a certain amount of weeks (meaning that you can’t play for a certain period of time). But if you are going for the ball and happen to knock into someone the play would generally just continue unless the player was seriously injured or concust. If you contact someone above the shoulders then generally the opposing team would get a free kick. Hope this helps 😊
I don’t know who made this compilation but there are literally thousands of bigger collisions and hits than this. I feel like this is a ‘family friendly’ version with regular bumps and then some random old footage included.
Anything that hits the head is not legal, but as you can see it’s an occupational hazard. There are 36 blokes out there in heavy traffic. Hits and tackles can come from any direction at full speed. The players look athletic - they need to be aerobically fit because of the not stop running on a huge field - but they are tall and built solid. Dirty and reckless plays are uncommon, but with so much going on collisions and accidents happen. So, players really are putting their bodies on the line.
A lot of these hits are called hip and shoulder hits and is a big part of the game. I have played all codes of football played here (AFL, rugby league, rugby union and soccer) and AFL has something that the others don't, all of the others you are facing your opponent and can braise yourself for impact, this is not the case in AFL (your opponents can make contact with you from any direction). Another huge part of the games physicality is that each team only have 4 players on the interchange and players can run up to 25km in a game.

The older clips are more brutal. They have changed the rules now, whereby you are not allowed to leave the ground to launch a hip and shoulder at you opponent. I played the game in the 80s, 90s. Most of what goes on is just second nature to us.
You are permitted to "bump" in AFL. However the onus is completely on the player who chooses to "bump". If any head contact is made then the "bumping" player can and will be fined and or suspended.
This is the Indigenous Australian game, codified 1859. What you just witnessed is part of it, to be fair, but there is way more to it than this. Best game in the world!!!
So many concussion cases made them realize they had to change the rules. It's still a tough game. A lot of those clips were old. It's the ugly past of the game.

Alot of the hand ones was old school rules
You can't jump off the ground now
Any hit to the head will mean you'll miss matches with fines
No where as ruff now
They have the best medical equipment at the games
Very cautious of spinal injuries
We've only had one person paralysed in games history
They have a special stretcher that can't put together under the players with very minimal movement
Also have a golf buggy been converted into a stretcher carrier
Plus some of the best doctors for high speed impacts like in car accidents
If hit around head especially when concussion involved automatically put neck brace on
They take the medical side very seriously and always looking on how to improve it
Almost all Australians born here play this a children very early age all through school years
Every school had a team and they'd have a school competition
Others used to go play on weekends with other local district clubs to get seen to get into league sides
I payed for school footy
But went and played rugby union on weekend's
Later on played cricket
Players not scare to play or get injured its part of the game
You rely on team mates to deliver the ball to you in a safe way
But sometimes when rushed they can't get the desired kick to you safely
Which gives the opportunity for opponents to get close to you and the heavy clashes you watched
Surprisingly both rugby and footy as brutal the contact less damage happens without Helmets and padding
Most player know how to protect themselves from hard hits so not a big deal
Just occasionally things go wrong in timing where shoulder don't line up and get the head
They've band the hip and shoulder from rugby you must tackle
But it's part of footy as well as tackling
Most players go hip and shoulder / bump to protect themselves when see someone commong at them
I lot of these bigger hits happen closer to final rounds when teams seasons on the line so have nothing to loose
They then go in harder then earlier part of year
Some are grudge matches where certain teams don't like other as well
