- Tableau has added support for Image URLs allowing you to load image assets from outside of Tableau, such as image storage buckets in the cloud or any URL-based image generation service such as Cloudinary.
Tableau Release notes
-------
Improve context recognition to help end-users better connect to and understand insights using Image Role. Image Role is a new field semantic that offers a scalable and automated way to bring image assets into Tableau. Tableau can now dynamically map images to links in your data and encode them as exportable row or column headers. This new capability allows you to manage image assets externally to prevent workbook sizes from becoming too large to maintain and share.

let me know what you think.
I don't think enough is said for the presentation here. I just did a Tableau recording myself, and that's a whole talent in itself. Great content, Tim.
This is so fantastic! I can't wait to try this out. I have a dashboard I had to scrap two years ago because this didn't exist. Thanks for sharing Tim!
That’s always the great thing about updates, always a handful of examples you can go back to.
Looking forward to using this for our product dashboards - really interested in the complexity level for cloud
I'm back to say thank you again! Just referred a client to this video to give them a rundown on this topic.
Glad it was helpful!
THANKS A LOT TIM this trick worked!!😍😍😍
This is an amazing new feature
Thank you Tim 🙂 another very useful video
Glad you enjoyed it
@Tim really you are champion 🏆
Hopefully this is the first step and they will enhance it beyond a URL image, which of course requires a site to hold the images until you need it. Now what mechinism is in place fingers crossed they expand it to allow images that exist in other places such as databases to be used as well.
Thank you for the content. How can I only display image instead image without "abc"?
Thank you for such good content.
Can you pls share the dataset? It would be very helpful!
One thing I just tried that does not work is using tableau URLs as an image source (with .png at the end). I am dissapointed this doesnt work.
Great video, Tim! Have you tried using the image role on shape? Does it work like a custom shape in that case?
Answered my own question with some testing, it's a no at the moment. Only rows and columns
Hey Tim! Thanks for the video! I could use it here and it worked very well, untill:
I tried to refresh an image, but in my Tableau Desktop it doesn't refresh. The strange part is when I publish my dashboard, the image that appears in the online is the refreshed one...the problem seems to be in the desktop.
I already try to refresh my database, change the column type back to text and again to link, close and open again...nothing makes the image refresh... Have you pass through this?
Important: If I open the URL, it opens the image as I want...I mean, is not a problem with the URL.
Hi Tim, do you know if Tableau can handle dynamic base64 images from a database? Or if an alternative solution to public domain images exists?
not yet but im 99% certain this has to be on the road map because image support has been getting a focus. Have yo looked at services liek cloudinary they may provide a way to do this and allow you to push to tableau that way.
can google drive photo url be used? as far as i know, it is not showing in tableau
If the image is publicly available yes. But if you need to setup permissions on the url then no. Best way to test the image is to see if it works incognito without you logged in.
Hi Tim, would using URL to Tableau server hosted dashboard thumbnails work on dashboard once uploaded to server? Currently only tested in Desktop 2023.1 and it doesn't work. Pending server upgrade to 2023.1
It's worked on Tableau Public as an example but it's not been reliable due to image size limitations in the past. best to test as things like networks and firewalls may also cause issues.
@@TableauTim thanks Tim! yep I think it's the firewalls issue for me ATM. I'll dig deeper with our infra guys
It appears this feature is only available for Cloud and Desktop. Can we expect this in the next Server version?
Yea Tableau server only gets updates every 6 months now. So 23.1 will include this feature in server
@@TableauTim do they have a release schedule for server, so we know when it will be available? I tried searching but it only says Q1 and Q3
If the image has a url it will display, otherwise it will not right?
Correct, I hint in the video they maychange this to support other formats like base64 encoding and maybe ven databases that support image storage might get future support but for now just URLs >> Check the documentation here: help.tableau.com/current/online/en-us/image_role.htm
@@TableauTim Tim, Thanks
Can this be done in Tableau Desktop? I think not lol
Yes exact same steps. Web authoring and desktop are the same thing but desktop has more compatibility of all features and configuration. I find it works better in web authoring
@@TableauTim Thank you so very much for the response good sir! I have been attempting to do so myself but am running into some issue. I found the https address containing a .jpg image but it is broken when I try to link in in Tableau. I will raise the issue in the Tableau Community. You are an Ace!
unc path?
blobs?
no support for svg?
Yeah exactly this is what I was suggesting May get added to the list further down the line as the feature expands. Base 64, databases that natively support images, and more. Think the issue might be that they’re trying to figure out what to do with extracts. At the moment extract handle text fine but not sure extracts have ever had to handle image formats or blogs.
