I respect police officers doing their jobs. The problem lies when a police officer or group of officers violate the law or rights of a person or suspect in such a way that is totally unnecessary or violent. What reasoning is there in abusing civilians just because you have power? There are plenty of police officers who do good honest work and stand for the rights, laws and constitutional amendments. However there are also civilians and groups of civilians who decide they are out of the bounds of law, and that is just as bad as a police officer who decides to cross the bounds of law. Just because there are many cases in which police officers are put all over the news that does not mean all are like that. Just like every civilian isn't a criminal or a saint.

They have repealed a law that was clearly, clearly wrong. However, the police officers that carried out those laws that were clearly, clearly wrong, are still there. The NYPD supported the "stop and frisk" law and changing the law without changing the police that carried it out and, in the process, violated the constitutional rights of hundreds of thousands of American citizens will simply cause the abuse to morph into a new form. An unconstitutional law is only a treat when there are police, prosecutors and judges willing to enforce it and a silent majority willing to accept it. For many years New York city had all the necessary ingredients for wholesale abuse of citizens by the police, and I suspect, they still do.

I do not live in NY, but I recognize how important this is for the nation. There is hope for democracy yet. I hope many more bold statements come from this mayor.
