One of the stranger parts of this movie is that a guy 30-35 years old is somehow a veteran of World War 2, which ended 35 years before the movie takes place. They never bother to explain it, which makes it funnier to me. There's a reason for this: "Airplane!" was inspired by a relatively obscure 1957 film called "Zero Hour!" It has the same basic story but is a drama. The makers of "Airplane!" used the same camera angles and very similar dialogue for scenes that parallel those in "Zero Hour!" I didn't fully appreciate some of the jokes until I saw "Zero Hour!" If you don't want to watch this 80-minute video, there's a 14-minute video on UA-cam called "Side-by-side comparison: Zero Hour! (1957) vs Airplane! (1980)."

In the hospital, Ted says that the other patient thinks he's Ethel Merman. Then they show the patient and it's a woman singing. That woman is actually Ethel Merman, who was a famous singer at the time, and Everything's Coming Up Roses was one of her songs. Yes, I'm old enough to remember that.

Lloyd Bridges, who plays Steve McCroskey, is a legend. He’s the father of Jeff Bridges (The Dude!) and Beau Bridges. He played a lot of villains in classic Hollywood films, and he did it exceptionally well, but in real life he was known as an extremely nice guy and a dedicated family man. He & his wife Dorothy were married for 60 years.
If you want to see him as a stone cold killer who becomes terrifyingly unhinged, check out the 1950 film “Try & Get Me!” (also known as “The Sound of Fury”). That movie also examines the role of the media in a way that is still relevant today. Lloyd Bridges also starred in an extremely successful TV show, Sea Hunt, which started airing in 1958 and has been in re-runs ever since. I love this guy!

Thanks, I couldn't remember the first name - Lloyd! Quite a dynasty of actors, I love how Lloyd was willing to play such a hopeless idiot! Anyone know Ethel Merman -? The lady singing in the hospital bed "There's no business like Show Business!"
*edit * or maybe "Everything's coming up Roses" 😁 Another legend from Hollywood!

    • @holyspacemonkey
      @holyspacemonkey 2 роки тому +2

@@biddylisduff Yes! Ethel Merman worked with Richard Carlson once, and I’m writing a book about him. They both starred with Jimmy Durante in the Broadway musical comedy “Stars in Your Eyes” in 1939. I knew her before researching that show because my dad was a fan, but now I’ve learned more. She was quite a force of nature!
In case you don’t remember Richard Carlson, he was most famous for starring in 1950s sci-fi & horror classics, like Creature from the Black Lagoon and It Came from Outer Space. He had a long, interesting career outside of that too, though, including on TV. And speaking of Lloyd Bridges and Sea Hunt, Carlson also starred in a TV series (two, actually) produced by Fred Ziv, an early TV trailblazer!

This is the first time I’ve seen Airplane go over someone’s head. I think you were too busy looking for meaning (and describing what we could all see) that you missed that this is absurd slapstick. The film relies on a lot of sight gags and word play, usually by treating dialogue literally. Why were they playing music? Because the guy in the control tower said they were flying on “instruments.” You’re not supposed to ask why things are happening, but just laugh at the absurdity.

When I was a kid in the 70s, the grownups smoked everywhere! Airplanes & airports, movie theaters, restaurants, arenas, you name it. Teachers smoked in the teachers' lounge. Parents smoked in the car with the kids. When I was in high school in the early 80s, it was tolerated that kids would go in the "courtyard" to smoke. He is ranked as the NBA's third leading all-time rebounder (17,440). There are also sight gags on top of puns (also some based on topical stuff of the time) that I'm sure you missed. There were a whole lot of send-ups of classic old films too. I guess you had to have been there. We were all laughing so hard at the time, we missed a lot of stuff and had to go back to the theater to see it again.

I think you missed approximately half the jokes. "There's a problem in the cockpit." "The cockpit, what is it?" "It's the little room in the front of the plane where the pilot sits." The black brothers speaking jive and the only person who understands them is June Cleaver, the whitest woman in America. I expect you don't know any of the main actors, they were all serious dramatic actors before this film. Can't believe you left out, "And don't call me Shirley," which is the most famous line from this film.
This isn't like any other movie, it's played like a serious drama but in reality it's wall to wall jokes. Did you notice all the mayonnaise on the walls of the Mayo clinic? That's a joke. Did you read the sign on the magazine rack that said Whacking Material? That's a joke. Did you notice the sound of the plane engines? They sounded like prop planes even though it has jet engines, that's a joke.
I think you'd enjoy the original black & white film this is based on, the 1957 drama "Zero Hour!" Now THAT is a dramatic film.

"This green screen is killing me." Actually, that's not a green screen; it's something much older, from the analog days of film-making. The process is called rear-projection, and it works by projecting a scene onto a screen behind the actors while the film is rolling. It was invented largely as a time and money saving device, since you could theoretically put a person in (or at least in front of) any environment, and not have to go out into the field to shoot the scene. The technique was used a lot for scenes in cars, like the one in this movie--the car is actually standing still in the studio, balancing on a moving gimbal to simulate driving movements. A modified version is still used in the industry today, though CGI is supplanting it as the background medium of choice nowadays.

Unless you’ve seen Jaws, you won’t get the opening gag.
Airplane is a parody of a 1950s movie called Zero Hour. There are also elements of a series of airplane related disaster movies with Airport in the title from the 70s.
There are a lot of stars in this movie that the younger viewers may not be aware of and some of the jokes may not make any sense. This movie is over forty years old so it’s understandable.

It’s a hat. It’s a brooch. Sadly, the actor died from AIDS. JayVee, the white lady was talking what was called “jive talk” in the 70’s. As a UK person who emigrated to the US just as this movie came out, I may have mixed up shows, but I think this actress was from “Leave it to Beaver” a very white show and she’s talking jive to these African-American men. The Asian man was dressed as a Japanese Kamikaze suicide pilot. The protagonist is a US WW2 fighter pilot who would have engaged the Japanese. Hence the traditional ritual suicide. Lloyd Bridges, a great US actor and scion of the Bridges dynasty. All the older actors were in very serious series and movies during the 50’s and ‘60’s and this was a way they could poke fun at their characters. And don’t call me Shirley. 😂😂😂😂😂

If you are not familiar with basic pop culture references (esp. references of that era and before), you won't get a lot of the jokes and gags. For example, if you don't know who Ethel Merman was (a great Broadway actress known for her roles such as Mama Rose - "Everything's Coming Up Roses"). So when he says the soldier thinks he's Ethel Merman, they actually have Ethel Merman get up and start singing one of her signature songs. These types of things are going on throughout the entirety of the movie.

When this movie came out It was hell for the writers to make the dubbing in spanish (in Spain).
The literal jokes and expresions (f.ex. the shit hitting the fan) were impossible to translate making sense.
They had to rewrite an entire new script and create new jokes that made sense with what was going on screen.
Surprisingly They did a decent job.

    1. I guess I picked the wrong week to stop watching "first time reaction" Airplane clips.
2, Little things to look for:
Ted was in the Air Force but at the bar he's wearing a Navy Lt. Uniform.
That fish was a freshwater catfish.
a couple fo Hari Krishna's actually leave the airport.
Otto/Auto pilot has his own webpage on IMDB
Ted doesn't have coordination problem. He has a drinking problem.
It's a jet but the background noise is of a prop plane.
The hubcap rolling after the accident is from the ambulance with the heart patient Lisa.
    3. Elaine has permission to sit on MY face.😍😋

4:53 remember when he bought the ticket, he said smoking. Also look at the fake Spanish translation of the no smoking sign.
10:38 that’s Ethel Merman. The 1980 audience knew who she was.
23:10 the photographers literally take pictures…off the wall instead of with their cameras.
24:14 this is a comedy so this put down wasn’t a reflection of the times. In my experience, unmarried people were not looked down upon in the 1980s.

When he’s in the hospital and say the other patient will hunks he is Ethel Merman , that was actually Ethel Merman who was a famous singer and actress who first began performing in the 1930’s and was still active in show business in the 70’s when this was made.
The two black men were speaking Jive which was a form of slang talk first popular with jazz musicians but it became popular in the 70’s in the black community, the lady speaking to them was famous for appearing in a sitcom called leave it to beaver In like the 50’s and it was known for being very whole some so that’s why it was funny that she’s speaking jive to these two men.

Airplane was based on the movie "Zero Hour" (195x) and is supposed to be (mostly) a scene by scene recreation of the original. A lot of the dialogue is lifted right out of the original. Of course, all the sight gags and jokes were added in to Airplane because the original was a serious movie! ua-cam.com/video/AWI3JZvvbI4/v-deo.html

There's cameos from some big old movie stars you're too young to know! I love the scene with the two black guys and the old woman, that was known as "Jive talk", kind of slang /street talk back in the day - the Bee Gees wrote a song- "Jive Talking" check it out! If you want another suggestion for a film like this, "It's a mad, mad, mad, mad world" - lots of ageing Hollywood stars guesting, ridiculous plot and goes for about 2 hours or more, but it's hilarious - real slapstick and chaos. This film was so different, bad taste, famous stars sending themselves up, I loved it. Cheers JayVaughan!
