I bought the Big Star box set (4-cd + booklet)and was totally blown away ,worth every cent, and i have ordered the book '33 1/2' by ANDY HUMMELL!!! Now people always ask me in the middle of conversations what am i playing?

💯 this Replacement song was the first thing that came to mind when I saw the name of this Bio. Never knew who the real Alex Chilton was until this. Thanks for posting the lyrics and Thanks for this rundown Ed.
I don't know the particulars but I'm pretty "mainstream" and I love September Gurls. Everyone has heard The Letter and can recognize his voice. The Replacements wrote a song about him, titled in his name. Is this not a "mainstream success" breakthrough or what?
Ok. Stoped the short. Went and listened. WHAT did I just listen to?! That is a a GOOD song. Also slightly odd in that I couldn’t place it time wise. Could be 60’s, could be 70’s, could be 80’s or 90’s. Had to look at when it was released. Added it to my Spotify.
@@EdCollects I saw a great movie and documentary about them. I'm 62 and recall the Box Tops and of course The letter. Big Star was Coooool. Record company dogged it.
Just listened to"13" Reminded me of a cross between James Taylor and the smooth group "Bread" . I really loved the Box Tops especially the song "The Letter"
One of the most underrated albums of all time, Period. Next time I’m ever blessed enough to get married again the song me and my bride will dance to at our wedding reception will be thirteen and luckily enough, I know some cats who will do it for me. Big Star was a phenomenal band and Alex Chilton was extremely talented.
Alex Chilton was a genius. I was always a huge fan of his. I read his biography. His death was heartbreaking. He was feeling ill with chest pains. He didn't go to the emergency room bc he didn't have insurance and couldn't afford the cost. His death is a disgrace and was totally avoidable. It's an indictment of the US healthcare system. 😢
He didn’t have rock-star good looks, but his talent and humble personality made him really handsome in an unusual way…he was really cute in the Letter video. He stayed up with his girlfriend all night in a wet, cold graveyard and when he showed up to the recording studio that morning, his voice was really gravely and horse because of the previous night’s antics, but the producer liked it and wanted him to sing like that all the time. Go figure…what a guy he was! Too bad he didn’t garner the fame he so richly deserved. 😢
Just saw the Big Star Radio City tribute show in LA and it was amazing - those guys really deserved so much more than they got. It was rly cool seeing Jody Stephens on drums and singing. And they performed Bell’s “I am the Cosmos” which was just amazing. Great show they all sound just like the singing on the original record. Members from REM, Wilco, and the D. B.’s
The first time I heard "Thirteen," I had to sit down somewhere. Listened to it on a loop for weeks. Still stop to really listen to it when I play it even now.
Chilton was an authentic badass who gave precisely zero f's. Could have, would have, should have been a Superstar, but he just got every shitty deal he could get.
I didn't think I'd ever heard it, But Holy crap , Elliott Smith introduced the song to me. He does a lot of cool covers. Speaking of which. Elliot would be a great subject for this channel. I can hear it now . Elliot Smith was born Steven Smith but changed it because he thought it sounded like a name suitable for a jock.😂
@@EdCollects Make sure that you include the fact that the case was never closed and the girlfriend' claims her fingerprints were only on the knife because she pulled it out of his chest and he bled out and took a very long time to call authorities. How can a person stab himself twice in the heart with defensive wounds all over his hands. He's about to go on tour with no drugs or alcohol in his system and was already hiring musicians and really looking forward to the tour. Thanks for the quick response
He was very successful when the Bangles covered " September Gurls" He bought a brand new car!!!! He produced the Cramps, the Klitz and The Panther Burns
The song thirteen was folksy and beautiful. Reminds me of early Harry Nilsson. In 1972 that song should have gotten airtime right next to Simon and Garfunkel. The Replacements did him an honor.
Another Rust Belt/Coal Belt band from that era that coulda been huge had their label not been run by a bunch of incompetents was (still is) Crack The Sky. For those who've never heard their music, please do your ears a favor and search for videos* of theirs here on AdTube! Another one from that era to check out is a band from a little east of the Appalachians -- Grin, from Maryland (ftg. then-future E. Street Band and Crazy Horse member, Nils Lofgrin on guitar and vox)!
Chilton/Big Star are often associated with power pop, and that is fair. But I see them more as, maybe the first, an alt rock outfit. Regardless, the Big Star albums are perfect.
I'm not making this up. In 2010, I had a dream with The Replacements' song "Alex Chilton" in it. I woke up with the song stuck in my head and decided to call it up on UA-cam. That's when I found out he had died a month before.
I miss the Boxtops . I miss Alex Chilton . I miss the 60’s and 70’s . I miss the good innocent times . I miss the girls in miniskirts. Lord knows , I don’t miss the draft . I want to go back but please this time don’t give me #30 as my draft number, again.
Yep big star thirteen -the story of all the things I seen from theoutside walking someone home saw others do it like taking to the dance others did ,I suppose that’s the point his voice weary of being left out?
Just any of Big Star's songs are timeless.
You are absolutely right! 🤘👊

Oknow THE LETTER , is a killer tune , & only 16 when he sang it !!! Very niiiice
My Mind was Blown when I found out he was 16 when he sang that Great Song. The Letter.
Yeah, I thought he sounded way more mature than 16!
Cry like a baby, and Soul Deep, were other hits for the Boxtops. They were big, in both England and the States. On the charts for weeks.
💯 16 years old singing like that. He should have went to England

Richtig Wunderschön ✨🌻💜🎉Ruhe in Frieden Lieber ALEX🥀🥀🥀🥀🥀🪔
I loved the song The letter,he had a fabulous voice.🎶
Yeah I love that song also! 👊
The Letter, Soul Deep , Sweet cream Ladies are just a few . At 16 , Lead singing the letter! How fantastic was that ? God bless you .
Neon Rainbow…liked that one as well.
Ok. Stoped the short. Went and listened.

Yeah the Letter is great! 13 is just a small example of how good their debut album is!
Good comparison! I agree
"Sweet Cream Ladies" ❤️
Out of all their songs, you had to name my FAVORITE!!! "Thirteen" was playing this morning on my walk into work. It gets me every time. 🥰

Yes, more people need to realize how great they were!
Great video i really liked his singing voice 🥰
Yeah he was so great!!!
I want that avatar!
Ty for tribute to him
Went to listen to "thirteen" and that was a solid song, Ed.... Woof
Cool! Yeah, I'm a big fan of Big Star!
@@EdCollects I kinda wonder what he would've sounded like if he did some Screaming Trees covers?🤔
@@EdCollectsI'm STILL listening to it in my "favorites"....It really has a later day Byrd's/Flying Burrito Bros. vibe to it.
I discovered 13 about a year ago ,was blown away and amazed I hadn't heard it before especially as it was released 50 years previously
Just a prefect little pop song. I love it.

Love both songs and bands never knew the connection - thanks for the vid x
👊👊🙏🙏
Checked out the song. Its beautiful!
Awesome! Their whole first album is great!
I love 13 like crazy, but I think my favorite is “Thank You Friends “.
Absolutely gorgeous❤

Another unsung song Alex sang was also a Box Tops number called, “Cry Like A Baby”.

Enjoy your series. Ed. The gritty voice on "the letter" hard to picture 16yr old kid singing it. Love that song
Thanks for watching! Yeah, he definitely sounded more mature than 16!
I posted about how that gravelly voice happened in another thread…pretty great story!
Thirteen is the most moving short song I have heard. I cry just thinking about it.
It's so great!
I love the lyric “won’t you tell your dad get off my back? Tell him what we said about Paint It Black…“
I wonder what it was that they said bout Paint It Black?
Great Voice Soulfull
Sweet Cream Ladies Forward March!
Il était vraiment magnifique et une voix exceptionnelle ❤❤❤❤❤❤

It's an amazing little song!

Sad but true 😔😔
No mention in the comments that Alex and Chris wrote the song " In The Street" that was used as the theme song for That 70's Show ?

Just gave it a listen. You're right. 13 was an impressive song. Nice sounding acoustic guitar with quite alluring vocals.
Thanks for taking the time to listen to it! That whole first album is amazing.

Yes!
My all time favorite song!
Man only 59. I’m 41 I hear so many people
Dying so young it definitely gets scary hearing about it. Big star was a great band though.
How do you think I feel at 48?!? Oh well. Yeah, Big Star was awesome.

🌹"Thirteen," "Feel," "In the Street"--all great songs!🌹
See you in heaven Alex! ❤
And “Thirteen” has been used on That 70’s show and How I Met Your Mother.

It's actually pretty good to.👍
Thirteen is a great tune but I love The Ballad of Goodo
