  • This is Episode 12 in our Roadtripping Thailand series.
    This. was. nuts.
Experiencing one of Thailand's Rocket Festivals was something we were looking forward to as so many people told us to come back to Yasothon to witness Bun Bang Fai. A wild, explosive, and dangerous local celebration at the beginning of rainy season.
    It did not disappoint.

Do you want to know why he uses blue tubes? Compared to Bamboo, because it is much lighter, no need to spend time digging inside, the size is uniform from top to bottom, (there are no rings compared to bamboo) the barrel is very smooth, because the rings of bamboo, there is a slight hollow and bump. (does not create aerodynamic disturbances that create drag when you are in transonic speed and approach supersonic it counts, the plastic is very resistant and allows a strong compression of the powder*
*This deserves to be detailed: the powder is composed of saltpeter and charcoal... But hundreds of killo of powder are gradually compressed with a hydraulic press and several tons of pressure. This allows to have a powder that becomes hard as stone and whose density is homogeneous everywhere. It will then be easier to drill a hole in the center of the powder, and it is this vacuum cylinder dug in the center of the propellant that allows it to burn efficiently and this without exploding, while the density of powder is extremely high today. Yes, these rockets seem traditional and they are, but they have much more, too, concentrated technology when you study them closely.
    Appendix
Interested, you too, by rotating rockets, I know that one year a professor of JPL
Jet Propulsion Lab, he really appreciated the system and brought students to study the thing seriously and I think I made a trip with 2-3 young people. His round rockets are also extremely interesting from a technical point of view (the stabilization is brilliant) (when they do not explode on the shooters)
You should know that the PVC tubes do not burn and end up falling. They will then be sought by the children, at the end of the festival and then displayed in the houses as decoration and as a lucky trophy. Nothing is lost.

Went to one of these festivals in Roi Et years back, a 3 day event total, night and day goings on. Great fun. One of the best cultural festivals you could ever attend in Isaan Thailand ( 21 provinces ). Yasothon is considered the best province to experience these...

Absolutely! Our favorite part was how welcoming everyone in Yasothon was during our time there. We have never felt so welcomed into experiencing Thai & Isaan culture before. They genuinely wanted us to be a part of everything. We will most certainly be making it back there next year 😊

This was so cool to see. I used to go to Fireworks conventions with my dad when I was a kid. He was a pyrotechnic for a living and literally built fireworks and rockets in our garage my whole childhood. This brought back a lot of good memories.
I hope everything is going well with your visa. I trust that it will all work out well.
Thanks for all of your great videos.
