"A highly egoistic person will definitely be miserable in the sport." That's so true! Unlike other team sports, all the paddlers need to be identical in terms of personal strength and paddling movements. Can't think about being the standout paddler and focusing solely on your own without considering your teammates. I really appreciate this sharing, as it made me realize the importance of humility in this sport.
Nice talk Ma'am Valbuena (my teacher in Business Psychology in Silliman btw). I stumbled upon this when I am listening to TED and youtube randomly suggested me this video. Being a paddler myself, same principles and realizations that I needed to leave or distance myself from people that could not understand how team works. I still love my team whom I was a big part from its beginning. But i guess it will remain a part of my history, as they say charge to experience.
Coach, thank you for your valuable lessons. I'm a baseball guy by background but decided to join a DB team this year here in NY. That you stressed that DB is a unique sport - the ultimate team sport - really resonated with me and I will take to heart your words and try to bring your words out to my teammates
This is a great vid. I understand better what our leaders go through day in and day out. How frustrating they might find us to be, but they weather our shortcomings. I have been a paddler for more than 5 years now, and fell in love with the sport the first day. It's true that there are no MVPs here. We are more like brothers and sisters who sometimes have misunderstandings, but whatever happens we bring out the best in each other. Though i am in a pseudo-hiatus right now because of an illness, i know i'll be paddling again 💯 percent when i am in tip-top shape! Paddles up and saludo sa Pinoy Paddlers!
Yes. We used to tell our paddlers, drop the ego, there can never be any David Beckham in DB. But i was more interested on how the two were reconciled, addressed thru psych programs/measures -- touched ego & member wanting to improve/shine.
