Is Muse S Worth the Hype? A Complete Review and Comparison

  • WHAT THIS VIDEO COVERS:
    This week I'm reviewing the Muse S device. This is the latest in Muse's line of meditation products, except this one also includes sleep tracking. It's a simple headband you wear to bed, similar in design to the Dreem 2. And since the company Dreem is no longer selling to consumers, I figured I would test out the Muse S to see if it's the next best thing on the market.

    Thanks for the super honest explanation! I wouldn't use the Oura's sleep stage measurement as reliable baseline though-I did a sleep lab in the hospital one night and the Oura ring (gen 2) was way off in terms of sleep stages. Wakeups, heart rate and total actual sleep time were pretty spot on though.

    I think they should modify their app and algorithms to make the most out of the sensors. tThe fact you can not have percenatges, numbers, and other things like those of dreem 2 stop the band from taking advantage of its true potential. It has basic things when it comes about sleep tracker. I will wait for the phillips deep sleep band 2.

    Guy with a really big head and short hair here, and I'm having tons of issues with the sensors, too. Reeeaaally annoying, I don't want to be fiddling around with the headband for minutes at a time, trying to get it to work right, before I go to sleep or before I can start meditating in the morning. And then once you have established all the sensors working, KEEPING them working is an even bigger issue. Like you, I've had plenty of holes in my sleep data, this morning I woke up and the device and Bluetooth on my phone were turned off altogether for some reason? (I don't think I'm capable of doing that in my sleep lol)
    I am also highly skeptical of the accuracy of the EEG data during my meditations, as the feedback doesn't really seem to correspond with my internal state, e.g. I would actually open my eyes and take a sip of tea, losing my focus on the breath, and would get rewarded with bird sounds for it.
    All in all, I feel like a beta-tester moreso than a consumer who paid hundreds of Euros for what is supposed to be a finished product. The tech just doesn't seem to be at the level yet that it needs to be for this to work as advertised. So I'm probably gonna return this and get my money back.

  • @CynicalManInBlack
    @CynicalManInBlack 2 роки тому

    Does it have bone conducting speakers like Dreem 2 does through which it plays meditation sounds? Or do you need to use headphones for that?
    And can it be used like a smart alarm as Dreem 2 can?
    I don't really care about stats to be honest, but do want a device that could help me fall to sleep and wake me up during the best stage of my sleep. Can Muse S do that?

    • @Christopher-md7tf
      @Christopher-md7tf Рік тому

      No to pretty much all of that, except that it can help you fall asleep with the Digital Sleeping Pills. You need to use seperate headphones, though, and it doesn't have an alarm function.

      @@katie_moore I wouldn't be so sure, it sounds like this has the same issues that the first gen Muse had. I never use mine because it takes so much effort to get all the sensors connected. And they regularly lose sync afterwards. This might be a tad better due to the way it attaches to the head, but I haven't yet seen anything as good as my old Zeo. It's a shame that the company went out of business and you can't get replacement parts.

    • @SmallSpoonBrigade

      It's a shame that Zeo went out of business, that had the best sleep tracking of any device out there. The results seemed a bit odd at the time, as it seemed to record more sleep time than I thought I was getting. But, years later I discovered it's an idiosyncrasy with how I sleep, I don't stop thinking until a couple of hours after I fall asleep, making the results a bit more sensible.
      Muse has always had issues with gaining and maintaining the connection, it's why I haven't used it in years. It takes so long to get working and by that point I'm so frustrated that I just give up.

    I have bought a Muse S (Gen 2). It looks like the device you are talking about. I am interested in sleep tracking, not in meditation. I agree that the contact of the electrodes with the skin is a problem. I would guess that your hair is a big, almost insuperable, obstacle for you. (I wouldn't think that your head size has much to do with it.) In order to get a better signal, I have shaved the sides of my head where the ear contacts fit. I agree with @marcelsamyn5592 that I wouldn't use the Oura's sleep stage measurement as a reliable baseline, because the Oura ring has no detection of brain electrical activity, which I think is necessary for reliable sleep stage measurement; it is unsurprising that he found in a sleep lab that the Oura ring (gen 2) was way off in terms of sleep stages. I have used concomitant video and independent ECG heart rate as a check on the Muse S (Gen 2)'s sleep/wake detection; I found it was mostly fairly good.
