Michael performs a bass solo at Bass Day 1998. Excerpted from the "Bass Day 1998" DVD, also featuring Victor Wooten and Rocco Prestia. More information at HudsonMusic.com
Awesome! This clip is very underrated. It's almost the best part of the entire DVD from Bass Day '98 if you ask me. It's an arrangement of Stanley Turrentine's "Sugar" btw.
@@MrSilver261 You might not like what he puts out, but you have to admit: he's one of the best at what he does. The number of bass players that can be compared to him worldwide is in the single digits
@HandMane I've only seen him and Victor Wooten do that before. By bringing the string off the fretboard like that, he actually bends the string over the pickup instead of a fret. Essentially, he's using the pickup as a fret, thus extending his range and giving him one super high note where, hypothetically, a fret would be if the neck was longer.
I hear Manring says about his music: Why does it have to be so difficult? He's just telling one joke after another and having a good time! It's so funny! : )
@MrMeddled Here man, you're very well read, insightful and clearly know what you're talking about. It is a FACT that the bass cannot be played in any way other then a supporting role, I mean come on who gives a damn about people's taste and what they enjoy? It's what we think that's right! It isn't possible that his clear enjoyment is coming across as smugness to the uneducated, that's not possible at all. Anyway, enough with the sarcasm. Irregardless of your age, you are clearly a child. Smile.
@bittynigga Manring never plays the same thing twice. Been to see him 4 times last week here in Ireland. And everytime he just got better. At the end of the day he is touring the world with his spectacular music. Jealous? UP THE RA!
OH MY GOSH IT'S SUGAR. Sorry, I had a fanboy moment. I think I saw this like 7 years ago (different video obviously) and didn't even play guitar yet, let alone jazz. Now I jam on this daily. Lol. What a coincidence.
@bassist3788 I love how he kind of quickly moves his head a couple of times afterwards to make it look like he was just really into it and that he didnt hit his head on it :P :-)
@UhMysteryGuest Uh, bass IS hard. We don't all just sit around and play root notes with an 8th note pattern. If you think bass is easy, pick up a bass and try and play YYZ right off the bat, anything by Jaco, or anything by Primus. Guarantee you'll look at the bass differently after that.
Practice, play and rehearse for hours, days, weeks...after that much time I asure you will have found the 'best' wrist position, at least for you. The goal really is for you to find a position that enables you to play for hours without getting yourself harmed.
@Flemmingdoerken ya i know what u saying ppl ask for more fast and flashy stuff when they shoud go for maybe de basics and things that are well made and good for the ear like this one good solo and tapping stuff xD
i don't get why people say that that's an ugly bass, suer there's the logo just smacked on there with no point to as why it's there, other than the fact that there's no head to put it on, i like headless basses sure they're nawt really all that great, but that's like saying i don't like floor-basses, it's all the same, just looks, Manring plays so good what does it matter that he's got one of the weirdest arrangement of bass guitars, 2 are completely custom (his Hyper-basses)
1:28 has got to be the most thoughtful and dynamic walking bass line I've ever heard. Kudos to Manring
A true musician !!! Not only a bass player!!! His musicality is insane!!!
I am totally taking a Master class in august taught by this guy!!!! so pumped

Technique, tone, dynamics. Pretty much knocked it out of the park
You never see a guy thats as happy to jus play as mike manring.
Michael Manring is from another planet. If I had another two lifetimes to practice I couldn't do what this guy does.
I disagree sorry about that and all but he doesn't float my bass boat at all
@@MrSilver261 You might not like what he puts out, but you have to admit: he's one of the best at what he does. The number of bass players that can be compared to him worldwide is in the single digits
I think his bass is tuned in OMFG

Why does video only have 100,000 likes? This man is a fucking beast.
looove the sound on that bass.
Love that “(Leo) kottke smile” at the end. Meaning, I just melted your face and you want more!
I met Michael before a gig back in the late 1980's at Yoshi's in Oakland. A very nice man and a great bass player.
Monster tone! Love it
He's covering Stanley Turrentine's classic tune, "Sugar". Nicely done.
Really cool,
A master, I can say this with no doubs.
I wish I could be as good as he is on the bass...... that song here is .. magnificent
@bassist3788 I love how he kind of quickly moves his head a couple of times afterwards to make it look like he was just still really into it :-)
very cool Michael!
One of the best, he was a Jaco' student..
And he learned Jaco's #1 lesson well, make it your own thing.
Some of the more complex chords ive ever heard from 4 string bass !
plus that groove
great bass player, great bass line, great shoes 1:38

Okay, so that was simply f**king awesome. Should I quit playing bass now, or should I watch it again first?

really good!
How many different basses does this guy have? I mean, all of them put together are probably worth than the one I have!
@bittynigga Manring never plays the same thing twice. Been to see him 4 times last week here in Ireland. And everytime he just got better. At the end of the day he is touring the world with his spectacular music. Jealous? UP THE RA!
@leonoff89 my friend builds these guitars at zon,Joe makes Michael's basses by his own specifications, specially made for him.
@XxKoGzxX Yeah, the 80s, music at its peak.
A Stan Turrentine tune if I am not mistaken. Or I think he at least played it on one of his CTI releases
I love his facial expressions. It's like he's making love to the instrument.
perfect
I went from a Billy Sheehan video to here... There really is no comparison
. Fret-wanking vs this...pure soul.

3:35 i like the way he's laughing when he returns to the first riff :P

@bassist3788 I love how he kind of quickly moves his head a couple of times afterwards to make it look like he was just really into it and that he didnt hit his head on it :P :-)

@giunny96 "Sugar" by Stanley Turrentine.
@MapexRG I foudn the feel of tiny, light bases to be pretty keen. But then, i enver cared what my bass looked like..
It's shit like this that makes it so hard for me to decide on jazz guitar or bass for my degree....
Close... it's "Sugar" ;-)
Azúcar!!!!! = )
Manthing takes a Bass Solo
@dlittle2468 A flamboyant one.
Is this just in a pentatonic/blues scale?

Kenny G finally found an instrument he can play in tune with.
Is that a Riverhead bass?
@Flemmingdoerken ya i know what u saying ppl ask for more fast and flashy stuff when they shoud go for maybe de basics and things that are well made and good for the ear like this one good solo and tapping stuff xD
what kind of bass is that
That bass sounds amazing but then again look who's playing it....

@fnuggie don't sweet it,dude...I was just trying to be silly. Can't be denied though...I bet Manring can play a mean classical guitar.
