Hey everyone! Today we are revisiting one of my favorite Sterling by Music Man Stingray SUB projects - Project Code Red! Featuring a full arsenal of EMG upgrades along with an Albridge bridge and Hipshot ultralite tuners, this bass is completely unrecognizable from its stock form. Let's check out some of my favorite tones from this awesome project!
This bass and all my other basses with rounds are strung with SIT Foundation Nickel Plated Stainless Steel 45-105(125) unless otherwise noted. Check them out at sitstrings.com/

I really like that bass and I feel the bones are so good with those bases that upgrading them is worth the money. They play so great.
I did the same mods (only electronics though) and it’s my #1 now. I’ve really fallen in love with splitting the neck pup and keeping the bridge in HB mode. Really easy to shape the tone using the bass/treble and tone controls. And I don’t feel too precious with it because it’s so affordable.
Hell yeah!
One of my fav bass builds of yours, sounds and looks awesome . 👌
I just bought this bass in olive and now I am already thinking of this mod for it! Thank you for the wonderful review of the build.
Man that bass sounds great!!! Love the mods you did! Just bought this same bass last weekend, and I love it! Quality is good and I really like what Musicman is doing with this line. I play this bass ,and Old Smoothie a lot. Love your channel! 😁👍🎸
Best sound of any mod you've done imo. Thanks for sharing brother.
OMG Lobster, I love what you did to this bass. It sounds great. I could tell you enjoy playing it. You can't stop smiling!!!
Very cool mod, sounds and looks awesome. Thanks Lobster 🦞
Looks stunning and sounds absolutely fantastic!
I've enjoyed your Project Code Red so much I'm replicating the electronic upgrades myself. I've bought the Ray4HH (in Candy Apple Red ofc) plus EMG pickups and BTC Control. At the moment, I'm enjoying playing the Ray4HH as is so I won't upgrade for a little while. It was great to hear you revisit the project. You show such tone versatility on Project Code Red. I love it!
This is one of the best sounding basses you've had on here. I want to do the same thing with a 5 string SBMM.
The fingerstyle tone reminds me a lot of a Wal bass.
That’s a nice looking and sounding bass, lobster. 😎🤘🏻🎸 the tones on this bass sounds incredibly versatile and the red finish looks beautiful. I would say The mods definitely makes a big difference in tone. I’ve owned a modified Ibanez soundgear bass that has bartolini electronics and they sounds phenomenal. So I say as long as you are pleased with the results regardless of how much the modded parts cost, that’s all it matters.
Lobster you ever in a happy place. Most of the tones were G&Lish...a good thing. Is there a pick up,preamp and hardware clearing house ,,...shhhh asking for a friend. Great job!
Ahaha thank you Stacy!
Those emgs sounds 🔥 so crispy clear
Nice bass
Just watched your video on this bass all stock. Honestly I have to say you did a fantastic job with this bass. Excellent choice in pickups. At 4:00 splitting the neck pickup for a p bass sound really sounded fantastic. The rare pickup soloed is incredible as well. You took 300 $ dollar bass and turned it into somethinf that you'd have to pay near 2000 for. Really nice bass.
Very cool, as always.
Very nice sounding sting ray and a versatile beast, not bad on the eye either🎸
that P bass tone nice, I might just do this setup as my next rig
Hey Lobster, I too have found great pleasure from the EMG pickups. I am thinking, with the modernity of the bass, perhaps you might consider it a Leatherman of a bass. Nice tones.
That bass is so nice
Thumbs up for the cat, oh; and the bass too!
This Code Red bass is a souped up EBMM Sabre bass. Lobster, Thx for the review.
Sounds awesome...
Great project - It sounds and looks great - especially the real Sting Ray humbucker mode ! But i think the saddles on the bridge should be black too (personal opinion).
I agree.
i had emg p/j set up in a Kramer they sound pretty good even as humbuckers.
Amazing beautiful red beast ! No more .by the way when ecaxtly are we going to hear your cat sings or playing on 1 of your basses 😼✌
I did a similar project with a Squire 70's vibe. I spent more on parts than the bass, but it was fun. Too bad the neck is garbage on those. Gonna stick with Stingrays from now on!
Love your slapping style my friend.Great bass and nice playing.Tell me,is that ring on your thumb an aid to your slapping technique or not?
Thanks Gerry! It is. I've been wearing it since before I started playing bass, but the added weight to my thumb helps with my technique.
@@LowEndLobster I must try something like that.I just cant get the hang of slapping.Maybe its because I just turned 69 LOL, but Ive been playing since I was 14,Thanx Lobster.
It is for sale on the Talk Bass classified’s
Well, im WAYYYY too late but THAT BASS is BRILLIANT
What’s the sunburst bass just over your left shoulder?
I’m thinking of doing a mod project like this. Seems like lots of fun and you get a very versatile bass when it’s all said and done!
I miss the old bridge with dampers on it.
I was really thinking of getting a Ray 24 but I tried one and I didn't like the thickness of the body and stock it didn't sound as bright as the stained SUBS which out of all of the SUBS those feel and sound the best to me.
nice
HI, Were did you get the black Hardware and pickguard ?
Damn that sounds so good! What is it worth fully modded if it was for sale? Asking for a friend.
The finished result here is 100% worth it. I sell many of my basses simply because I never play them and I need to make room for new stuff. Things get VERY cramped in my bass lair very quickly. But the tones in this vid (and the original) speak for themselves. Most of the vids folks see here were filmed about two months ago, so sometimes I will have already sold a bass (this one has sold, but is on TB from current owner) and then edit a video and think to myself "Damn that really sounds good". This is one of those haha.
Love the tones you get out of that one. Question for ya... How close to a vintage P tone can you get out of it? I hear the HH rays can get close. Then again, loads of folks say "if you want a P tone, get a P" lol. I play in a band where I use both and I'd love to have something that can toggle back and forth from a ray tone to a P tone in one instrument. Was thinking of a project bass like this after I finish my current project, "operation lipstick on a pig". I have a 5 string Squier Jaguar bass that I'm finally getting to completely rebuilding. Refinishing body in pearlized auto paint (from a spray can), Kickass Bridge, Duncan Quarter Pounders, new custom wiring harness, Warmoth neck, Schaller tuners and all hardware will be blacked out. It's a new level of impractical lol. Code Red looks like just the kind of impractical project to be next on my list haha.
Thanks Croc! With the 'single coil' mode engaged on the neck pickup, I think we come fairly close. IMO the full humbucker on the Stingray HH's doesn't really nail it, but Code Red gets closer as does the Sabre with the 'single coil' neck mode (position 2 on the 5 way switch).
I own a Ray34HH and can vouch the neck pickup doesn’t quite get there like Code Red’s single coil mode does. I wish one of the 5 way toggles was just single coil neck but I’m still happy with the bass and don’t feel like modding it at this point lol
Maniacal laughter in large hall reverb!
Just wondering if the same concept could be done on a 5 string SUB? Sounds great!
Great question! Yes, though some modding will be required for that. EMG sells the 'USA' sized pickups for the 5'ers which are different than the ones on the SUB. Modding to the pickup cavities along with a USA pickguard will be required for fitment on a 5. Someone actually did this recently and had Dom at Third Floor Guitars do the work. He has pics on his instagram, came out great!
LETS GOOOOO
WOOOO!
Wow!! Which Hipshot Ulta lite tuners? They have USA Ultralite and also Licensed Ultralite?
Is doing something like this really a better outcome then something like a ray 34 ? I’m looking for a second bass to complement my American standard jazz boi . I am somewhere between a pbass and a stringray 😂
Between Project Code Red and a Ray 34HH which would you recommend as a better "only one bass" to have?
Is there a major difference in the necks?
Do you have experience with the Ray35?
(I bought a $300 Ray5HH that I can still return to GC and get a Ray35HH instead, looks like after changing out the bridge to the wider spacing and pickups and tone control price will be almost exactly the same; Soldering and modification doesn't bother me at all either)
Hey there Lob! I have a Guitar Center brand Mitchell MB200GM where I put new EMG Active-X in it. It sounds like a beautiful beast. Those are the only words to put it. I’m sure there’s better words describe it, but the sound is the different between night and day from stock. You just proven that. Anthony is the best person at EMG to either help you with your full replacement and/or just a simple tuning. You have a question for him about EMG and anything related to EMG, he has the answer. This was my first time replacing anything but my strings on my bass. It was like doing surgery on that old game “Operation” by Milton Bradley because I knew nothing about how to gut and rewire any kind of electronic…anything. After about 25 to 30 emails later I got it going and like the old “Frankenstein” movie where Dr. Frankenstein proclaimed, “IT’S ALIVE!!!! ALIVE!!!” So that’s the name of my bass. “FRANKENSTEIN” and he sounds great!!!
Anthony is THE MAN! So glad he helped you out.
@@LowEndLobster what’s the difference between the Ernie Ball you just did the mod on in this video and the hanging one in the upper right corner?
@@dainlynam2891 About $2000 hahaha. The one in the corner is my USA Stingray Special BFR. It's stock and features the MM 18v preamp and neodymium pickups. A very nice bass!
so what is price of this project with bass and your work included. Is it worth compared to overseas more expensive brother quality wise.
really like Albridge, unfortunately they want $50 to ship to UK which seems crazy for a small $100 part
Reverse Lakeland sounds like pbj setup maybe little fatter
What’s with the lobster glove mate? Also, call me picky but it’s soldering not soddering
For some reason, your intro loop video is black screen but audio works. The main video works both video and audio
Yeah I done messed up ;P
@@LowEndLobster just wanted to notify…
@lowendlobster can I install a single Aguilar pick up with a stock pickup in these 4HH or do I need to swap both pickups at the same time?
An Aguilar won't work unless you modify the pickup or install a 3 way switch. Aguilar's mm pickups are two conductor and hard wired in parallel, meaning you can't split the pickup
@@LowEndLobster thank you I think I may just buy a Sterling ray4 and mod it with the Aguilar set up. I appreciate your quick response and insight
First!! Morning Lobster!
Morning :)
Where did the title go
Good catch! My bad lol
You probably won't do it will. But would allow me to send mine and do the exact same thing. My tech doesn't know how. Can't figure it out
I appreciate the thought! I'm happy to help get it working, but I don't do commissions like that
@@LowEndLobster totally fine. I understand
@@LowEndLobster EMG MMTW. Hipshots. EMG preamp? Albridge. 3 way Tele selector. Anything else?
I would like to be able to change things in my bass, upgrading to another level... Sigh😢
Did someone forget to put their intro video in? 😇
LOL! I didn't notice ahahahah. Whoops!
Your channel turned my on to EMGs, so punchy. I later learned that part of their sound comes from their dual coils being individually buffered before getting mixed together so the characteristic is somewhere between parallel and series modes that you would know from passives. For the tinkerer there's also some circuitry that adds active mixing to a passive pickup by EMG and Bartolini, also all out DIY breadboard stuff. EMGs pickups make is easy though with the solderless connections if you are not technically inclined and they are voiced really well from the get go just with the basic volume and tone controls included.
Great comment! I'm so glad my channel helped you get into EMGs. They're really awesome pickups, and you're absolutely right about the solderless design being the icing on the cake for less technically inclined people.
@@LowEndLobster Btw do you prefer the MMTW or MMHZ in the sweet spot?
nickel plated stainless steel strings? that's not likely. it usually is one or the other
Tone sounds extremely thin and non Music Man like!
