- " In 1976 or so I did a bio for Spanky & Our Gang when they were doing country-rock on Epic. Subsequently I ran into Ellen (Spanky) at a swap meet in Topanga, and bought a short "Eisenhower jacket" from her. We shared a slight connection, also, in that my ex-gf Pam's brother had been close friends with Malcom, the guy in Our Gang who died in the late 1960s. In the 1990s I heard that she was in, and then out, of the Mamas and Papas. And I made a "little girl songs" tape for my daughter and included "Sunday Will Never Be The Same," which reminded me just how great a singer Spanky was/is.
One day in Burbank in 1995 I looked in the window of Lane Bryant womenswear shop and saw someone who looked like Spanky behind the counter. I went in and asked to use the bathroom, of which they had none, and it was her: she didn't recognize me. I didn't know what to say: "How's things going?" didn't seem right
Next trip to the mall I summoned up the nerve to say something to her, and we had a jolly reunion. A month later she made a terrific appearance on my TV show.
(She is not working there anymore. She runs a storage-management service from her home, when not singing.)" -- from Another Fein Mess, 11/1998 www.sofein.com

Elaine "Spanky" McFarlane is still alive and singing at age 81 as of 28 October 2023... when I posted this comment!!!
OH, how I'd love to spend a few minutes, just doting on her. Does she tour? I live in Las Vegas, so only about a 5-hour drive from L.A.
I met Spanky at a rock concert in Orange County's Pacific Ampitheatre. We got to talking and she told me who she was. Got along great and she was very very nice. She invited me up to her house in Hollywood for a small party and then found out she was singing with The Mamas and the Papas. They were doing a concert in Ontario and asked me to design the T-shirts for them. Got the shirts done and delivered and then went to the Red Lion Inn to meet with them. The concert was cancelled after the promoter skipped with the money and so we sat in the bar and had lunch. Met John Phillips and daughter Mackenzie along with Denny Doherty and Spanky's manager. They were incredibly nice people. Spanky was going back home since the concert was cancelled and she gave me the key to her suite at the Red Lion for the weekend since it was already paid for. When she went on the road with The Mamas and the Papas she sent me postcards from wherever they were. Great memories with a great person and a beautiful voice as well.
I was at that Ontario Canada concert 1983. It was at the expo center.
This concert was supposed to be in Ontario, Southern California. @@michaelrochester48
One of the most underrated singer ever, her voice quality is up there along Mama Cass ,love Spanky, songs of my teenage years.
I love her group's songs. They remind me of my childhood. Her and the group's drummer are the only 2 that are alive today.
One of the greatest female rock singers of all time! She was a marvelous lady and a class act, her group was the greatest Sunshine pop Group of all time !!!!!
What a charismatic woman! Her band deserved a lot more enduring fame then they got- check out how well they pull off their arrangements in vintage tv performances. Super talented, every bit as good pop songwriting as the Mamas and the Papas. Thanks for this!
They didn’t write their hits. John Phillips of the Mamas and Papas wrote the hits for the M & P as well as many other famous songs.
Thank you. I was going to do what you did, but you already did it.@@grouchosays
I saw Spanky when she did a gig in Middletown NY with John, Denny, and McKenzie. They were called the New Mamas and Papas ..WOW what a voice live and McKenzie the girl can sing, I talked to her for a while what beautiful smile and eyes. lol what a moment...
OH! Love me some Spanky & Our Gang! Their music is part of the soundtrack of my life! Sending much love to You all! ♥️
Sunday Will Never be The Same was a favorite of mine as a kid. Had no idea she became heavy over time. Great voice and that group had some great harmony! I was born and raised in Miami where I still live. Got an 8 track marked down to 99 cents at Kmart which I still have in my collection.
She was very very pretty!!!!!!
Fascinating interview of a lady whose harmonious music I love, collected and often still play. Thanks Spanky. Linda
I don’t think I can add anything that’s already been said. But boy could she sing. Loved it 🥰
Love the songs of Spanky and Our Gang. Such a fun lady so full of life and talent.
Love her so much!!
Such great musical memories for me.❤
She’s such a sweet lady too!!!!
Thank you.
One of the most underrated bands ever, their songs are gorgeous with amazing melodies and harmonies.
Sad that Malcolm and Lefty died so young.
I have always loved Elaine, she has an amazing voice, no one like it
WHAT A HOOT AND A HALF! GOD GIVEN TALENT. SUCH SPECIAL MEMORIES OF MOMENTS IN TIME!
Truly one of the finest groups ever!
I loved their songs so much when I was in my early teens... still makes me cry listening to "Sunday Never Be The Same."
Those final vocal refrains in "Sunday" hit me in a special place.
Thanks for putting up the full interview - this is great!
I love this woman! ❤️🌹💐🥀🌹🌺🌷🌺🌹🏵️🌻💮🌸🌷🌼❤️💐🌸💮🌷❤️🌹🥀🏵️❤️💐🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶
She was my late teen favorite. I could sing all of her hits. It is so nice to see and hear her again!
"Sunday Morning" is my favorite song of theirs, too!
This is so very GREAT . . . THANKS for posting . . .
To me with my heartbreak in my late 20's Sundays were never be the same and still aren't! great song!
What a powerful, and beautiful voice she had.
I wish there were more interviews like this. Spanky is a beautiful woman, very relaxed and she''d be a fun person to be around. Love her sense of humour!
There are! There's all sorts of amazing gems hidden away in Art's over 900 shows. If they're not on line yet, eventually they will be. Meanwhile, search the Poker Party video lists. Thx .. (fodel)
@@artFeinPokerParty Thankyou Art... I will investigate. We didn't get your talk show in Australia, but thanks to UA-cam, as you say, hidden gems! Hate to say, but I only discovered Spanky and Our Gang last year as Lazy Day was the only song I remembered. Amazing talented group!! That album with Little Brother Montgomery!!! I can see why Soanky loved that album!!! It is one of my favorites! Great show and really good questions too.
@@mpwb Thanks for the comments. for the record, I'm NOT Art.. i'm franklin, (fodel), a good friend of Art's, and curator of the youtube channel.
@@artFeinPokerParty 😅Apologies Franklin!! Thankyou just the same.
still love this woman
I bought The Complete Mercury Recordings back in the early 2000’s. Thank you Jesus!! First time I saw Spanky and our Gang was on Merv Griffin show in later 60’s. I consider there music as relevant today as it was back then.
You and me, bro.
No superlatives come near her voice. Their cover of "Suzanne" is fantastic.
Still Listen to her song;s great LADY!
She is amazing just a wonderful singer.
Spanky McFarlaine has a powerful voice like Mama Cass. What a group I love their music . I just came across an album today that is very old. It has a picture of Spanky with a baby which I assume is her baby as I know she had a baby about that time I don't know if it was a boy or a girl.
I'D LIKE TO GET TO KNOW YOU. I am a huge fan.
Love this Band
She;s being Humble here!
Love the great sparky and our gang
Great band, Great lady
She and the drummer Seiter are the only ones still with us. You can see Spanky is a happy optimistic good natured human being. Those are the qualities that give you a long life.
Absolutely!!👍
And the lyrics! “you got a smile like a pocketful of diamonds”
Thanks to the host Art for this interview and written introduction for the video
Spanky is really cool
LOVE SPANKY
Love her
R.i.p.spanky love ❤️ your music 🎶.
She's not dead.
She's alive, genius. Sheesh.
It has never been explained why the death of Malcolm Hale broke up the band
I read he was a major force with the band, had most of the ideas how the harmonies sound, it sounded like the other band members depended on him. It was so sad for the band losing him this way and so sudden.
Hey Spanky! Feet off the table!
Spanky (Elaine) had such a wonderful voice, an amazing singer and entertainer. This show however must have been where they got the idea for 'Between Two Ferns'.
Does she still live in Peoria Illinois
What year was this
What year was this video?
1994.
I saw the copyright date, at the end of this video.
WTF???????? The guy in the middle talks like Cousin It!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I can't understand a word he says!!!!!!!!!
I have been a fan since 1967. But I could do without seeing her feet.
She's a talented lady. But, definitely one of those types who are annoyingly comfortable with themselves. 🙄
So a band member died and that ended the band. Why?
What I've heard is that after Malcolm Hale died suddenly in late 1968 the band was devastated. He'd been their vocal arranger and overall was the glue that held things together. They fulfilled their immediate obligations (you can find footage of the Malcolm-less band performing on the Smothers Brothers show a few weeks after Malcolm died) but afterwards lost the will to go on.
So sad, that Malcolm Hale died of carbon monoxide in Chicago, from a faulty heater, in his apt. He was only 27 years old, I think.
Malcolm also played trombone.
That is sad. Great group.
Well said@@ericthoroman4429
She really does not show her age at all. My mother passed away at 81.
Well, the show was taped 30 years ago.
" summoned up the nerve to say something" wuss definition. "come in to your house, go to the closet with your wife preferably"..... how presumptious of ones marital status.
Adulteress.
The crack about Karen Carpenter, seriously?
