(for context i am not a white guy) i am tried of studios pushing race changes. i grew up with many characters who have been race swapped and just because they might look like me doesn’t mean im gonna go watch it. i dont care if someone looks like me, i just want them to be as accurate as possible i personally think the whole diversity movement in entertainment is the reason for many new film failures

Having no doubts about Pappa Sidou's acting skills, if he is being seriously considered for the role of Snape, I think he would even be better in the role of Bellatrix Lestrange.
They need to be carefull, because IN CANON Snape is bullied by the Maraudes, he is ,IN CANON, racist towards Lilly and he is not the most friendly to Petunia. If you must be race oriented, then look at the books and see what they say, and match as you can, rather than enforce your racism. If Snape is palid then he should be. if Lila Brown has darker skin in the book, then she should in movie/tv. Just do it.
If a characters skin color isnt integral to their role in the story, it doesn't matter. Even if the source material references a certain skin tone or race. My problem with Snape being POC is that its gonna give everything about his blood status a REALLY WEIRD RACIAL UNDERTONE. Especially if all of the Marauders are white.

I am not an absolute purist, but I think if the premise and promise is to “be faithful to the books” , be faithful to the books down to how a character is described.
Exactly. The new Snape does not have a hooked nose. He can have a wig for the hair, but the fact is Snape’s large, hooked nose is a very defining physical feature and the actor just doesn’t have one. I’m sure he’s a great actor, but he’s just not a book-accurate depiction of Snape, and we were told the whole point of doing the series was to be more accurate to the books.

Why are we doing a “new take” on characters who are firmly established? No one wants a new take, they want the characters that they know, to be portrayed in a believable and accurate way. If you don’t like the source material then create your own thing, don’t come in and mix it up to your liking. Every great fictional universe is ruined when a new custodian comes in to “make their mark” and “bring something new”. If you want something new, create it yourself, don’t pull the threads from a nearly 3 decade old story and try pass it off as a “reimagining”.
Of course, as should be the case for every cast member. They will never top or beat the performance of the actor who came before them, but if we have to deal with this reboot, making the role their own version of it as long as the actor keeps it in line with the source material is fine. If the actor tries to replicate the previous it might end up being a mess cause no matter how it turns out people are going to compare anyway, but as long as the casting isn't woke, and the director and script writers stay to the source material I'm willing to watch.

Personally I think they make a huge mistake in filming this at all. It would make so much sense in animating the series. Here are my reasons: 1. This will be a longwinded series in serveral ways, both that they need to secure actors that can remain for at least seven years. That includes both child actors that will age rapidly and elderly actors that sadly might pass during production (eg dumbledore, macgonagal, ollivander, hagridetc) . Then we also must consider that there are certain rules when it comes to child actors concerning allowed time on set. 2. Effects, such as spells and creatures, will be hard to keep to consistent and timeless quality over the span of the series. Consider that there will be developments in both formats, but by animating the series, it will be easier to lock down a certain style that will not feel dated if you were to rewatch the entire series later on 3. You are free to do as described in the books. This one is related to point 2, where animation will allow for a certain wimsy in characters, style, design etc. 4. By animating, the series will become its own thing instead of being compared to the amazing job that was done in the movies. Let's face the facts, no matter who is cast, there will be controversy and the actor will have a pair of humongous shoes to fill. 5. Might be easier to adjust for the international crowd. Eg is it the Sorcerer's stone or the Philosopher's stone? Also what would be the anagram for voldemort? Etc This is just my thoughts on this

A live action interpretation of the Harry Potter books has already been done and done very well, so rather than just repeat themselves they should nake an animated Harry Potter series. This makes even more sense when you consider the enormous progress in artificial intelligence and text to video generation that has occurred in just the last year. This would also eliminate the problem of the kid actors growing up too fast
To be honest, I will be among those who're gonna have a problem reconciling the casting of Paapa Essiedu as Snape, should he end up taking the role. And it's solely due to the fact his appearance doesn't fit the bill, when compared to the book description. But like you said, it's not the actor himself I'll be having the beef with, but the show's casting department instead. Also, as someone has already proposed in the comments, Essiedu would be a perfect casting for Kingsley, ngl... because damn, the guy can, indeed, act.
I'm most concerned about whether or not they're going to actually adapt the source material or just tell their own story with a nod of names and places mentioned in the book. So many "adaptations" these days are that in name only with the show runners and writers deciding to tell their own stories instead and, frankly, I'm done with that to the point that I don't trust any statement that they're adapting anything. They're just doing their own thing and riding on the coattails of a fandom, hoping we won't notice or care.
Unlike other stories where they could excuse the race swap because there were no characters of a different races, that’s not the case in the Harry Potter universe, since there are other races in that universe, so the race swapping makes no sense for me for some characters if you have other roles to fill for that race that would be accurate with the character descriptions. I would like them to be faithful to the books and the descriptions.

I watched the movies before I read the series, so when I was reading the books, I could hear the original actors voice in my head....even if the lines weren't in the movie. That being said, I'm going to always be partial to Alan Rickman's and Maggie Smith's portrayals over anyone else. It will just be a case of seeing who they cast. Honestly, anyone who has done Shakespeare could play many of the characters...especially Snape.

Correction..... The gentleman that you speak about, he can act very well...... I want the characters that are in the book their descriptions to come out and walk out of the book and it be like " that's the guy or the lady...".. I see with the description in the book
Serious doubts this will make it past 4 seasons. Actors will quit, get more famous and leave. They are gen a/z so they have no work ethic and will complain. The tough shooting schedule will be a big issue. Plus kids like their own stuff. They don't want a hand me down franchise
One of the hardest part for them to cast people is how many years it was part of audience life and even worse, how much it was pushed over the years after the movies. When you have one film, and you make reboot in 20 years, people dont really get that much attached to characters, but Harry Potter is different, with 8 movies and absolute tons of content after them, people have the images of the actors engraved in their minds. One of the reason I thing, race swapping the most important characters is nearly impossible to do without recieving backlash. I can't really thing how they could change the main threes + Snape, Dumbledore, Weasleys, Voldemort and Sirius. Those characters are pivotal to the movies and you would need to be expectional actor to rewrite the image of those char in people heads, hard for any actor, but even more harder for diverse actor. As much as I don't like race swaps, the most important thing is the acting and until people see it, you can't judge the choices.
In my opinion, setting Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker as an example that some roles can’t be outdone is wrong, because that’s exactly the concept he undermined - he played Arthur Fleck superbly, gave a performance that left the other Jokers not unparalleled.

I know HBO will do their best. Fans will get uses to any actor they see playing the parts as long as they don't deviate to much from the original script. For instance turning Dumbledore into a clown or Hagrid into a midget, etc.

book snape and movie snape are different and movie snape is def written to be more likeable in terms of not content but literally just personality. so there is hope if its to be a book accurate adaptation that any other actor who is talented could create their own version of snape that is good.
I think Snape will be the hardest roll to cast. No matter who they cast there will be strong comments from true Potterheads. I personally am not sure it’s been long enough to allow fans to accept it. We will see.

Faithful and inclusive do not go hand in hand. It's one or the other. I just want something close to the books but I know they are going to make some characters different which is fine if it doesn't break the story. I was 11 years old when I read the first Harry Potter in 1997. I am 38 now and I am still just as much of a fan as I was when I was a kid. I will be 40 when the series debuts and I am looking forward to seeing a cast that reflects the ethnicity of fans like me.

i am tried of studios pushing race changes. i grew up with many characters who have been race swapped and just because they might look like me doesn’t mean im gonna go watch it. i dont care if someone looks like me, i just want them to be as accurate as possible

Having no doubts about Pappa Sidou's acting skills, if he is being seriously considered for the role of Snape, I think he would even be better in the role of Bellatrix Lestrange.

If you must be race oriented, then look at the books and see what they say, and match as you can, rather than enforce your racism. If Snape is palid then he should be. if Lila Brown has darker skin in the book, then she should in movie/tv. Just do it.

With casting, they can not and should not race swap or gender swap characters under any circumstances! I am not an absolute purist, but I think if the premise and promise is to “be faithful to the books” , be faithful to the books down to how a character is described.
Exactly. The new Snape does not have a hooked nose. He can have a wig for the hair, but the fact is Snape’s large, hooked nose is a very defining physical feature and the actor just doesn’t have one. I’m sure he’s a great actor, but he’s just not a book-accurate depiction of Snape, and we were told the whole point of doing the series was to be more accurate to the books.

Why are we doing a “new take” on characters who are firmly established? No one wants a new take, they want the characters that they know, to be portrayed in a believable and accurate way. If you don’t like the source material then create your own thing, don’t come in and mix it up to your liking. Every great fictional universe is ruined when a new custodian comes in to “make their mark” and “bring something new”. If you want something new, create it yourself, don’t pull the threads from a nearly 3 decade old story and try pass it off as a “reimagining”.
The actor who may play Snape should not make the mistake of emulating Alan Rickmans’ performance, but make the role his own.
If we're going thru all this... I actually agree. That will make us dislike the newly casted character even more.
Of course, as should be the case for every cast member. They will never top or beat the performance of the actor who came before them, but if we have to deal with this reboot, making the role their own version of it as long as the actor keeps it in line with the source material is fine. If the actor tries to replicate the previous it might end up being a mess cause no matter how it turns out people are going to compare anyway, but as long as the casting isn't woke, and the director and script writers stay to the source material I'm willing to watch.
The problem is, Alan was completely true to the character.

Personally I think they make a huge mistake in filming this at all. It would make so much sense in animating the series. Here are my reasons:
1. This will be a longwinded series in serveral ways, both that they need to secure actors that can remain for at least seven years. That includes both child actors that will age rapidly and elderly actors that sadly might pass during production (eg dumbledore, macgonagal, ollivander, hagridetc) . Then we also must consider that there are certain rules when it comes to child actors concerning allowed time on set.
2. Effects, such as spells and creatures, will be hard to keep to consistent and timeless quality over the span of the series. Consider that there will be developments in both formats, but by animating the series, it will be easier to lock down a certain style that will not feel dated if you were to rewatch the entire series later on
3. You are free to do as described in the books. This one is related to point 2, where animation will allow for a certain wimsy in characters, style, design etc.
4. By animating, the series will become its own thing instead of being compared to the amazing job that was done in the movies. Let's face the facts, no matter who is cast, there will be controversy and the actor will have a pair of humongous shoes to fill.
5. Might be easier to adjust for the international crowd. Eg is it the Sorcerer's stone or the Philosopher's stone? Also what would be the anagram for voldemort? Etc
This is just my thoughts on this

A live action interpretation of the Harry Potter books has already been done and done very well, so rather than just repeat themselves they should nake an animated Harry Potter series. This makes even more sense when you consider the enormous progress in artificial intelligence and text to video generation that has occurred in just the last year. This would also eliminate the problem of the kid actors growing up too fast
To be honest, I will be among those who're gonna have a problem reconciling the casting of Paapa Essiedu as Snape, should he end up taking the role. And it's solely due to the fact his appearance doesn't fit the bill, when compared to the book description. But like you said, it's not the actor himself I'll be having the beef with, but the show's casting department instead. Also, as someone has already proposed in the comments, Essiedu would be a perfect casting for Kingsley, ngl... because damn, the guy can, indeed, act.

I'm most concerned about whether or not they're going to actually adapt the source material or just tell their own story with a nod of names and places mentioned in the book. So many "adaptations" these days are that in name only with the show runners and writers deciding to tell their own stories instead and, frankly, I'm done with that to the point that I don't trust any statement that they're adapting anything. They're just doing their own thing and riding on the coattails of a fandom, hoping we won't notice or care.
Unlike other stories where they could excuse the race swap because there were no characters of a different races, that’s not the case in the Harry Potter universe, since there are other races in that universe, so the race swapping makes no sense for me for some characters if you have other roles to fill for that race that would be accurate with the character descriptions. I would like them to be faithful to the books and the descriptions.

And then you're gonna get the people you're gonna say oh you made the black guy an evil guy... I just think it opened up kind of worms.. The mobile game handles diversity well with a few new characters. Really wish they had the courage and creativity to come up with a new story plot and not remake stuff. I believe people would be all over a new story set in the Hogwarts universe. Hire writers...!

I watched the movies before I read the series, so when I was reading the books, I could hear the original actors voice in my head....even if the lines weren't in the movie. That being said, I'm going to always be partial to Alan Rickman's and Maggie Smith's portrayals over anyone else. It will just be a case of seeing who they cast. Honestly, anyone who has done Shakespeare could play many of the characters...especially Snape.

Serious doubts this will make it past 4 seasons. Actors will quit, get more famous and leave. They are gen a/z so they have no work ethic and will complain. The tough shooting schedule will be a big issue. Plus kids like their own stuff. They don't want a hand me down franchise
One of the hardest part for them to cast people is how many years it was part of audience life and even worse, how much it was pushed over the years after the movies. When you have one film, and you make reboot in 20 years, people dont really get that much attached to characters, but Harry Potter is different, with 8 movies and absolute tons of content after them, people have the images of the actors engraved in their minds. One of the reason I thing, race swapping the most important characters is nearly impossible to do without recieving backlash. I can't really thing how they could change the main threes + Snape, Dumbledore, Weasleys, Voldemort and Sirius. Those characters are pivotal to the movies and you would need to be expectional actor to rewrite the image of those char in people heads, hard for any actor, but even more harder for diverse actor. As much as I don't like race swaps, the most important thing is the acting and until people see it, you can't judge the choices.
In my opinion, setting Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker as an example that some roles can’t be outdone is wrong, because that’s exactly the concept he undermined - he played Arthur Fleck superbly, gave a performance that left the other Jokers not unparalleled.

I know HBO will do their best. Fans will get uses to any actor they see playing the parts as long as they don't deviate to much from the original script. For instance turning Dumbledore into a clown or Hagrid into a midget, etc.

Honestly they should use a lot of makeup to make the actor look more like snape. Just like they did with voldemort in the movies.
On first thought I said "well that's not Alan Rickman" but on second thought nothing's really going to be the same so I'm hyped to see it. He doesn't need to be white if that's the issue

Papa Looks to nice and he dosnt give me that kind of heavyness Snape needs :/ If he lost a bunsh of weight and looked older than his age it would kinda fit more into my picture of snape (im not saying he should, that can be dangerous.....)
Both Rickman and Smith had the presence to make anyone listen and THAT is so important!!! He looks and feels like a teddy bear in comparison
I could care less if Alan Rickman is held up as Snape.

book snape and movie snape are different and movie snape is def written to be more likeable in terms of not content but literally just personality. so there is hope if its to be a book accurate adaptation that any other actor who is talented could create their own version of snape that is good.
They should make it like the books as far as possible with Rowling

Why make Snape black for no reason? You might as well make Vernon Dursley a trans woman, or Dumbledore Chinese-American. If anyone objects, I guess that only bespeaks a prejudice against these groups. In fact, doesn't race-switching just one character (out of dozens) show a pretty poor commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion?
Faithful and inclusive do not go hand in hand. It's one or the other. I just want something close to the books but I know they are going to make some characters different which is fine if it doesn't break the story. We know that they are going to make someone gay I just hope it doesn't break the story because I am not able to think of a character that can be gay without changing the story

I was 11 years old when I read the first Harry Potter in 1997. I am 38 now and I am still just as much of a fan as I was when I was a kid. I will be 40 when the series debuts and I am looking forward to seeing a cast that reflects the ethnicity of fans like me.
