  • Learn how to make smooth color changes in your amigurumi using single crochet stitches. Using this technique, your color changes between rows will be nearly invisible in your finished piece, unlike traditional color changing methods.
    I use this color change method in all of my amigurumi projects. You can find my amigurumi patterns for free on my blog.

      You’re lucky 🍀 that you found out so early. It took me 2 years of doing amigurumi before I found out about this technique. Yeah! It means that all the projects I’ve done in the past that required color change were TERRIBLE. Because I learned the basic way (which is NOT neat at all). So yeah. But, I don’t think it’s all bad. At least it wasn’t 5 or 10 years later 😂. Anyways, will definitely be using this technique from now on

    This gives a good colour change, but I find it makes it lumpy on the surface of the amigurumi. I used the technique for a stripy jumper and it gives a knobbly spine effect going up the amigurumi - maybe because I've been using cotton thread quite tightly crocheted?

    • @thenicolechase
      @thenicolechase  4 місяці тому +1

      I'd imagine that would be why! I typically use worsted weight acrylic, which is pretty soft in comparison to cotton thread, so it has some more flexibility. The smallest I've used it on myself I think would be DK cotton. ❤️

    Just to clarify, you do the first sc in the second stitch of the row since we slip stitch to the first in back loop, does this change where we start counting our stitches for each row then? Like could this throw off shaping for later on if there is shaping in the pattern?

    • @thenicolechase
      @thenicolechase  9 місяців тому

      Yes, that's correct. This method would impact shaping if the shaping isn't done evenly for the entire round, for example, if you were creating a curve rather than just slimming or widening.

    • @thenicolechase
      @thenicolechase  Рік тому +6

      You can do it either way. The first stitch of your round would not be the stitch that you made the color change, it would be the SC that follows it, and then you work your last SC in the same spot as the color change, so your count will remain the same.

    Does this technique move the start of the round one stitch to the left? The reason I ask: I decided to practice this method on your Rainbow charlie bear, but when I went to add the arms I had a problelm. If I followed the pattern the first arm ended up in the front of the bear instead of the side.

    • @thenicolechase
      @thenicolechase  4 місяці тому

      Hi! Yes, it would. Unless you would do the color change with your last st of the prior round instead of the first st of the next. As for rainbow Charlie, you can simply shift the placement to wherever puts the arms on the sides, keeping the same number of sts at the front and the back as written. Hope that helps!

    I'm a bit confused, would the last stitch from the color change count as the first stitch from the original round or the last stitch in the round? Let's say if the pattern called for an increase then 5 single crochets in the round I do the color change in, would the last stitch I do to complete the color change be an increase or a single crochet

    • @thenicolechase
      @thenicolechase  5 місяців тому +1

      I personally just shift the entire round over a stitch, with the last stitch completing the color change being the last stitch in the round. This works great for projects that only have a handful of changes and/or that the shaping isn't complex or one-sided.

    Do you start the color change on the last stich of a row or on the first stitch of a row?

      I typically do it in the first stitch, but you can do either way and it will work out.

      I am trying to make a bee... and it just doesn't work. Nothing works for me 😭
