Ah, my 2nd Favorite Guitarist ever ( Jeff Beck no.1) here are my ratings All his albums are good 1. David Gilmour 2.About Face 3.On a Island 4.Rattle that Lock And all his Live Albums are Great Especially Live in Gdansk and Live at Pompeii. Thank you Pete.😎
Our picks: 1) David Gilmour 2) On An Island 3) Rattle That Lock 4) About Face Ironically, we have all the albums on vinyl, except “About Face,” but we will get it soon. We do have a 12 inch promo single,”Love On The Air”we recently found. Thanks for doing this Pete!🙏🏻🎧🎸
I have to be honest, I have only heard his Rattle that Lock album on spotify and I really liked it, so I thank you Pete for ranking his albums, I will check the rest of his discography ✌🏻👌🏻
David Gilmour discovered and helped Kate Busch to, a brilliant artist. I listened to Davids first solo album 40 years ago but i only remember There's no way out of here, i shall go back and rediscover it.
Self Titled About Face On An Island Rattle That Lock The one song that stands out the most for me is "Near the End" from "About Face". His solos on this song are exceptional! Rivals anything he has ever done and Jeff Porcaro's (rip) drumming is amazing!
David is my favorite guitarist. I have his first 2 on vinyl. A cousin of mine gave me his 1st album on vinyl and years later I bought the second one when it came out maybe within a year or so I don't fully remember exactly. Anyway my number 4 is his Rattle that lock 3rd is On an island 2nd About Face and 1st is his self titled David Gilmour. I have all 4 on c.d. I am glad you did his collection of solo albums.
I worked third shift at a convenience store when Island came out and would hear his song over and over again on our muzak sound system and I had no idea it was David Gilmore until a year or so later....
Hi Pete, Nice tribute to the man that gives us wings with his guitar solos. Surprising that two legends of the Floyd have very limited solo input. I guess they put a lot of their energies to the Mother Ship mostly. I am not sure how I would rank them. All special in their own way. Thank you for doing these great videos. Looking forward to the next videos. You are playing with the big boys with legendary guests. Much deserved success. You are one cool dude, Tino
David Gilmour has a vocal & guitar style that exudes a thoughtful, progressive, rock style that is comforting & always an interesting listen. Never been a huge Pink Floyd fan;but there's no denying their influence within the confines of rock history!!! David is a huge part of that legacy....my favorite solo release from him - ON AN ISLAND. Glad you brought up his sax "cred". Which I feel needs to be used more in the bluesy, progy rock releases @ least as a "enhancement" of direction....Springsteen & Mc Cafferty come to mind.
David Gilmour is a sensational guitar player and vocalist. Have to say that some times I don't know if I like his guitar playing or his singing more, although of course he is more famous for his guitar I guess. Great albums both with Pink Floyd and in his solo career. Just listened to his Live in Pompeii album, very good!!!
I love the song Murder, a very cool Gilmour tune . It's an easy play on acoustic and the bass line is great, all very Floydish . Thank you for the cool ranking review .
Hello Pete, great review. I can only agree, the first Gilmour Album is also my favorite. In my opinion the best of Floyd-Solo-Albums followed by Wright's "Wet Dream". Hope there will be more of Floyd-, Genesis- and Yes-Solo-Stuff. Greetings from germany... bye and take care.
its a tough one for me but the killer harmonizing vocals of crosby and nash on On an island are so awesome i gotta go on an island no.1.Beautiful album so chill,
The debut solo album David Gilmour is a masterwork bought it when it first came out never tire of it. About Face is excellent also. Never heard the other two will explore them.
The best concert blu-ray I've ever seen is Remember That Night, from the Royal Albert Hall on the tour backing On An Island. Guest appearances from David Bowie, Graham Nash, and David Crosby. The sound and editing are incredible. Best of all... Rick Wright is on stage so you're seeing half of the classic Floyd lineup. I can't recommend this dvd or blu-ray more strongly.
When his latest album came out he had a show about making it. It was interesting to watch as his is very methodical and layers his music so much. It shows when you listen to his music. I recommend watching the documentary.
4. Rattle That Lock 3. About Face 2. On an Island 1. David Gilmour Side Note: IMO Rick Wright’’s Wet Dream is a pretty damn solid album, could argue it is the best of the Floyd solo albums.
I too think Wet Dream is solid but I dare say it's close to masterful. Richard Wright was going to be working on a more instrumental album before he died. Man, that would have been interesting.
I bought it in 1990 and was only disappointed because it wasn't as good as "US and Them" but it's still probably better than "David Gilmour" (there's also the short instrumental opening track of Richard Wright's "Broken China"; called "Breaking Water" I've gotta listen to "Wet Dream" again!
Its a good record, try listing to The End, especially the end of the song its amazing. I think if the production was better and didn't have that 80's sound it would have been much better.
Can't rack them!!!! Love them all!!!!!! I am listening to On an Island right now as I open the video!!!! Oh listen to his new song.... Yes, I have ghosts!!!!
Yes! The Debut and About Face are by FAR his best Solo work. His latter catalog is very "sleepy" and not very involving-sounding. But to your first comment, I LOVE the dry, simple, clean Production and Audio Mix of the first record. It's a great CD to test High-End Audio gear !
Totally Agree with your ranking. I really can´t get into the # 4 that much, don´t fear to say "quite boring". , On the other side "On An Island" is so good, such a superb opus of him, think about those mixed emotions on public and critics when released. "Too slow", what were you expecting to hear ? Motorhead?. Finally those like me who purchased his self titled debut album when released love it most, It´s wonderful. No more experiments next time Mr. David ! One Rattle was enough.
I actually have never rated them best to not so great because each is fantatstic for the time that they were released. They differ so much but they represent where he was and where he is headed - listen to his new single as an example . Whenever I listen to any of these great albums I remind myself that they are David Gilmour albums and not substitute Pink Floyd albums . I don't want him to be trying to bow to pressure from PF fans and making an album as a compromise to what HE wants to be doing! So , none of them for me is better than another, they are all magical.
That's one scratched up Telecaster on the back cover of About Face. I think it's one of his faves, and he still has it. The cover art on the first solo album must be one of the dullest efforts by Hypgnosis, but it's a great album.
Our lists are almost flipped. I think a couple of tracks off his first album are fantastic, but never got much into the rest. That said, Gilmour is one of my favorite guitarists and Floyd is a top 3 band for me, so I enjoy all these records. 4) On An Island 3) David Gilmour 2) Rattle That Lock 1) About Face About Face was huge for me. I saw that he is releasing a new song, so maybe we will get a 5th one soon!
His last two solo works are so laid back they verge on muzak. Nice enough but no bite. His wife's lyrics are also facile to the point of parody. Waters' solo work is far, far better especially Amused To Death.
I'd rather Gilmour's laid back musings to Waters bitter personal dross mixed in with his dumb socialist diatribes, another multi-millionaire hypocrite who loves making money whilst spitting out his crap socialist nonsense.
agreed. He's a wonderful musician but kind of vacuous intellectually. I can't stand Polly's lyrics. He needed to pair with another great lyricist if he wanted to continue Pink Floyd, or write good solo songs.
Roger’s albums are better than any sleeping pill now and the fact I now cringe when I hear his voice. Roger is stifled as a writer now and even Neil Peart was a better writer than Roger after 1980 and grew as a lyricist whereas Roger is stuck on I hate war, I hate Right Wingers, I hate Christianity and Capitalism and love terrorists and anarchists. Plus Roger’s now Britney Spears like in lip syncing and surrounded by female singers who ruin every song live and dances. He is now what Neil wrote about on Losing It “Sadder still to watch it die than never to have known it”. Amused to Death suffers from the CD age and is 32 minutes too long. Radio KAOS is my favorite album of his and he should have ended with it.
Pete I thought you'd mention the contributions of great musicians on 'On and Island' too. Crosby and Nash and others. Ever seen his live performance of that at
Maybe David does not want to take the risk because a lot of pink Floyd fans will expect David to release solo albums like he would be in pink Floyd so I wrapped that David has not overdone the solo album matter.
Yeah that 70s solo album gets a bit lost in the 70s memories of Pink Floyd, and yet it's so good. Short and Sweet is an all time favourite song for me.
1 on an island 2 rattle that lock 3 debut 4 about face all fantastic albums but i feel his newer stuff works as a concept while you kinda pick out the better ones on the first two
For me it would be: 1) On an Island (the top two can change from one day to the next as they are so close for me) 2) David Gilmour (see above) 3) Rattle that Lock (quite good but lacking quite a bit as a follow-up to On an Island) 4) About Face (interesting but just lacking appeal a little for me)
In my opinion Pink Floyd is one of the best examples of a band that is greater than the sum of its parts. The fact that several of them were architecture students is really telling when it comes to their sound. Roger Waters conceived the overall project and ‘look’, Rick Wright provided the solid foundations, David Gilmour gave it its aesthetic shape and Richard Wright added all manner of flourishes and fine details. On their own they are nowhere near as effective. I like the odd tune on their solo albums but they aren’t a patch on the albums they made together. ‘The Dark Side of the Moon’ was the huge success it was because each member was fully contributing ideas and felt fulfilled. As the group became less democratic the music suffered a little.
Glad you didn’t count Metallic Spheres with The Orb as it was not a Gilmour album but David guesting on guitars. My ranking 1) About Face (I applaud David for trying something new) 2) self titled 3) Rattle That Lock 4) On an Island (amazing live as Rick Wright’s presence on the versions on Remember That Night and Live in Gdańsk make it a lost Pink Floyd album)
David Gilmour - Love Pink Floyd, his voice, his guitar solos (which I wish would go on forever) to pieces, but I don't own a damn one of his solo albums. Guess I'll have to check 'em out :-)
Great video--DG is one of the greats, for sure. I give a little more weight to Rattle That Lock....yes, his voice is a lot less flexible with more age grit, but the musicality of the tunes is right up there. I would go: 1. On an Island 2. Rattle That Lock 3. David Gilmour 4. About Face That being said, I enjoy all those albums quite a lot--there's not a dud among them.
his debut 78 album solo is just fantastic I love it start to finish I still do. that tone was getting with that compressor on black along with the big muff. such awesome cuts on there. about face was too poppy I wasn't into it. it's my least favorite of solo DG rattle that lock is pretty good once you play it a few times. and then on an island.. I like with him and Polly Samson come up with his wife she's been really good for a lot of his music. up until a few years ago The weather Channel on the local on forecast used to use Milhaus the kick-off to his solo album for years are you big Roxy Music fan Pete?
You were surprised that David only had 4 albums but for all intensive purposes the Pink Floyd album A Momentary Lapse of Reason is a David Gilmour solo album. That's how it began but he was convinced to call it Pink Floyd which he had the rights to. The producer made some suggestions to make it sound more Floyd Like. Drummer Nick Mason only drums on a few tracks . Former Floyd keyboard player Richard Wright is listed as a special guest but only performs on 1 song.
David and Bob Ezrin co-produced. Momentary Lapse was David and Nick Mason and Nick did all of the sound effects for the album but his confidence in drumming had declined and was more interested in his auto racing hobby than the drums at the time. By Christmas 1986 David and Bob along with Nick and a returning Rick Wright who added keyboard overdubs and is on Learning to Fly, On the Turning Away, Terminal Frost and Sorrow. Nick drummed on Learning to Fly and Terminal Frost. The rest of the drums were either Carmine Appice or Jim Keltner or programmed. The Updated and Remixed version of the album which was supervised by David and Bob Ezrin had Nick recording the drums on all of the tracks now except they kept the programmed drums on Sorrow but Nick added new drums to The Dogs of War, One Slip, On the Turning Away, Yet Another Movie and a new drum track for Terminal Frost. Since Rick passed away David, Bob and Andy Jackson added outtakes and live Rick keyboards from the Delicate Sound recordings and outtakes and added Rick to The Dogs of War, One Slip, Yet Another Movie and Round and Around. More of Rick was added to Signs of Life. I don’t listen to the original album anymore and was replaced by the Updated and Remixed version.
The first album to me was refreshing. It came it between Animals and The Wall, probably while Waters was obsessing and perfecting the Wall. It's great Gilmour guitar but stripped down to a trio and basic song arrangements. The trio btw, was his band Jokers Wild that he was in before Floyd, which included Rick Willis (Foreigner/Roxy Music, etc.).
DAVID/ to me unreal guitarist/ obviously everyone who knows music 💯 knows that. BUT , to me super underrated Vocalist. I find his voice very SOOTHING! Obviously/ just my opinion! My order would be 1. 1978 2. 1984 3. 2015 4.2006.
1. Self titled (1st) 2. On an Island 3. Rattle That Lock 4. About Face Seems to alternate for me Good not so good. The VHS tape I have of About Face has footage of him telling the promoter he doesn't have time to do a meet and greet. 👍
Pete Townshend put his original demo for All Lovers re Deranged on his compilation of demos, Scoop 3. His version is more like a ballad with a slightly amped up chorus. Pete's version kind of sounds like it could have been on All The Best Cowboys Have Chinese Eyes.
Gilmour has 4 solo albums by name, but really he has 7 solo albums if you include the 3 late PF albums (i know Rick Wright contributed a lot for Division Bell and Endless River but it’s still Gilmour led). For these 7 albums, my ranking is: 1. Rattle That Lock 2. A Momentary Lapse of Reason 3. The Division Bell 4. On An Island 5. About Face 6. David Gilmour 7. The Endless River
I agree with your ranking, Pete. But for some reason it seems David himself doesn't agree, he doesn't seem to play anything from his first album live anymore. That I know of anyway. I was lucky enough to see Gilmour on the About Face tour when he did play a lot of that debut album. Fantastic memorable experience. ...
David said the first album in hindsight was a jam album done in three weeks. About Face (my favorite) was planned as a proper album and he got people like Jeff Porcaro and Pino Palladino to play on the album and he looked back on it as a lot of great moments but the sound and flavor of it was too 1980s for his advancing age. He wrote all of the lyrics on the album. On an Island is great but it was better live. Rattle That Lock is a phenomenal album as well. Metallic Spheres with The Orb he was just adding guitar textures to it. David and Richard Wright had the best solo albums.
On A Island... Oh man what a Stellar Lp From Gilmour... Best if played on a Turntable with Earphones in a setting with low lights at 420... Easily his best im my opinion... Can bring a tear to your eye!
Although I have every Pink Floyd album, I don't own any of the solo discography of Gilmour, Waters, Barrett, Mason, Wright solo albums I have listed to some of their albums. My rankings for David Gilmour are: 4. About Face 3. Rattle That Lock 2. On An Island 1. Self Titled Debut 1978
4 for 4 I have the exact same order. I really liked On An Island when it came out, some moments reminded me of very early Floyd. First still the best, Mihalis and Raise My Rent top notch stuff.
@dan cussin Agree,I bought"Obscured by clouds"album back in 70s,came out in '72 one year before 73s Dark side OF the moon.I was just saying never cared so much for last song on that album sound track the Valley, but I still like whole rest of album along with the other sound track album"More"which David Gilmore sings all vocals tracks on"More".
@dan cussin yeah "Childhoods End"probably my favorite song on that album, along with "The GOLD ITS IN THE..."another great deep track, along with the 2nd track" WHEN YOU'RE IN".
@dan cussin yeah,I like both albums, the "THE NILE SONG",and "IBIZA BAR",along with "DRAMATIC THEME" "MAIN THEME" and "THE CRYING SONG" are my favorites on "MORE".In my opinion both albums good listens. Also if you hadn't already, check out "THE NARROW WAY," a David Gilmore song from "Ummagumma" '69.
5. About Face (Great but tainted by 80's sound however seems better now that 80's is retro) 4. David Gilmour (Solid Rock N' Roll Album) 3. Rattle That Lock (Great record but not as good As On an Island - Production is outstanding - Girl in the Yellow dress should have been sung by a woman to me that style should be female singers) 2. A Momentary Lapse of Reason - (Pink Floyd in name only) 1. On an Island (His crowning Jewel, could have been a Pink Floyd album - Production is outstanding). I say that about Momentary because it was a solo album and Mason and Wright were brought in late to the production. Out of all the Pink Floyd albums it also sounds the least like Pink Floyd. I am not saying that in a negative way, its an amazing record. To me, most of the members of Pink Floyd solo stuff is hit or miss. But I love Pink Floyd and will take any bit and piece I can find. Nick Mason's records are crazy and all over the place, Roger Waters records are strange and epic at times but leave you wanting to kill yourself, Wrights records are fantastic and show his great song writing abilities that seems to have been ignored by Waters... But to me its all in the PF Universe and even the weaker parts have hidden gems in them.
Check out Gilmour's work on Warren Zevon's Run Straight Down. Haven't given up on you yet Pete.... definitely not too late to check out the greatest songwriter of all time. 😉✌️
To me On an Island, as the name might suggest, is kind of a combination of Pink Floyd and the lighter side of Jimmy Buffett. Sounds like a strange combo, but if you haven't, give it a listen, and tell me if you agree. One of the best for out in the boat or on the deck w/ a cold one watching the stars.
My favorite artist of all time. I love his studio albums just as good
Ah, my 2nd Favorite Guitarist ever ( Jeff Beck no.1) here are my ratings
All his albums are good
1. David Gilmour
2.About Face

Especially Live in Gdansk and Live at Pompeii. Thank you Pete.😎
Thank you for ranking the studio albums of: David Gilmour (solo).🎤🎸🎵🥁

Rattle That Lock
The one song that stands out the most for me is "Near the End" from "About Face". His solos on this song are exceptional! Rivals anything he has ever done and Jeff Porcaro's (rip) drumming is amazing!
Some of the best sounding albums from a solo artist. Rattle That Lock has a special place in my heart

"On an island" is my favorite of his solo albums. "Castellorizon" is the name of a Greek island located in the eastern Mediterranean.
I think that Gilmour has a brand new song on iTunes (with his wife Polly Samson) helping out!!
It's with his daughter Romany Gilmour.
I worked third shift at a convenience store when Island came out and would hear his song over and over again on our muzak sound system and I had no idea it was David Gilmore until a year or so later....
My rankings:

*4)* On An Island
*3)* About Face
*2)* Remember that Night: Live at Royal Albert Hall
*1)* David Gilmour
My favorite, by far, is his first solo album from 1977, followed by About Face
Can’t believe this came up today as I was listening to Gilmour’s first solo album this afternoon!
Gilmour is my favourite face in the whole of rock music !
Hi Pete,

No one would disagree with your number one. Whenever I hear Short & Sweet, I wonder if the music for Run Like Hell was beginning to stir in his mind.
Blue Light my favorite track from David Gilmour's About Face
Yes, but that video is horrid.
Agreed. I would say, my favorite considering the four albums.

4 about face
all fantastic albums but i feel his newer stuff works as a concept while you kinda pick out the better ones on the first two
His first is the best by a country mile & was the best Pink Floyd album they never released....
Mention of Ian A, makes me think a ranking of his solo works would be good. When time allows of course. Martin Barre too!
For me it would be:
1) On an Island (the top two can change from one day to the next as they are so close for me)
2) David Gilmour (see above)
3) Rattle that Lock (quite good but lacking quite a bit as a follow-up to On an Island)
4) About Face (interesting but just lacking appeal a little for me)
1. Rattle that Lock(masterpiece)
2. Self titled(great album)
3. On an Island (great album)
4. About Face(decent)
1: David Gilmour
2: Luck and Strange
3: On an island
4: About face
5: Rattle that lock
On an Island is really amazing!
I ranked them same as Pete. But I heard that he has retired. He did just release a single with his daughter singing vocal.
My ranking
1) About Face (I applaud David for trying something new)
2) self titled
3) Rattle That Lock
4) On an Island (amazing live as Rick Wright’s presence on the versions on Remember That Night and Live in Gdańsk make it a lost Pink Floyd album)
For me it has to be About Face. Absolutely LOVE that album!!
I would go:
1. On an Island
2. Rattle That Lock
3. David Gilmour
4. About Face
That being said, I enjoy all those albums quite a lot--there's not a dud among them.
1. On An Island
2. David Gilmour
3. Rattle That Lock
4. About Face
He just released a new single Pete. It's on youtube.
his debut 78 album solo is just fantastic I love it start to finish I still do.
that tone was getting with that compressor on black along with the big muff.
such awesome cuts on there.
about face was too poppy I wasn't into it. it's my least favorite of solo DG
rattle that lock is pretty good
once you play it a few times.
and then on an island..
I like with him and Polly Samson come up with his wife she's been really good for a lot of his music.
up until a few years ago The weather Channel on the local on forecast used to use Milhaus the kick-off to his solo album for years
are you big Roxy Music fan Pete?
Castellorizon (Kastelorizo)...is one of the most beautiful and smallest islands in Greece, and its about the times he spent there.
1. Self titled (1st)
2. On an Island
3. Rattle That Lock
4. About Face
Seems to alternate for me Good not so good. The VHS tape I have of About Face has footage of him telling the promoter he doesn't have time to do a meet and greet. 👍
Excelent!! what about top 10 albums of Rick Wakeman (solo) and Steve Hackett (solo)?
Hackett coming in the somewhat near future-Wakeman I don't have a lot of other than his first couple.
For these 7 albums, my ranking is:
1. Rattle That Lock
2. A Momentary Lapse of Reason
3. The Division Bell
4. On An Island
5. About Face
6. David Gilmour
Can bring a tear to your eye!
... Really cool pull out Poster reminiscent of thos early days when pride was taken into lp packaging
Although I have every Pink Floyd album, I don't own any of the solo discography of Gilmour, Waters, Barrett, Mason, Wright solo albums I have listed to some of their albums.
My rankings for David Gilmour are:
4. About Face
3. Rattle That Lock
2. On An Island
1. Self Titled Debut 1978
This is hard because they're all amazing but:
4. Rattle That Lock
3. David Gilmour
2. On an Island
1. About Face
Robert Wyatt is a darn good horn player, although mostly known as drummer.
Wyatt was also on one of Nick Masons solo albums.
can you do a ranking the studio albums of spawn of possession death metal
4 for 4 I have the exact same order. I really liked On An Island when it came out, some moments reminded me of very early Floyd. First still the best, Mihalis and Raise My Rent top notch stuff.
Could I add "I CAN'T BREATHE ANY MORE"the last song on album,DIG it start to finish.
What's your order of Bruce Dickinson solos?
I can't decide between Accident, Chemical or Tyranny as my number one...
4) About Face
3) David Gilmour
2) Rattle That Lock
1) On An Island
He wrote "Childhood's End".......
@dan cussin actually like whole album except one song,"absolutely curtains"never clicked,at least it's last song on album so don't skip it
@dan cussin Agree,I bought"Obscured by clouds"album back in 70s,came out in '72 one year before 73s Dark side OF the moon.I was just saying never cared so much for last song on that album sound track the Valley, but I still like whole rest of album along with the other sound track album"More"which David Gilmore sings all vocals tracks on"More".
@dan cussin like wise, had that album too, you'll like "IBIZA BAR",it's like a cousin part 2 to the "NILE SONG".
My favorite albums:
1. Live in gdanks
2. Rattle that lock
3. Debut ,sekf title
DG
On an Island
Rattle That Lock
About Face
The only Gilmour solo album I love is the first one from 1978.
Thanks Pete, I don’t own any of his solo stuff.
On a Island #1
5. About Face (Great but tainted by 80's sound however seems better now that 80's is retro)
4. David Gilmour (Solid Rock N' Roll Album)
3. Rattle That Lock (Great record but not as good As On an Island - Production is outstanding - Girl in the Yellow dress should have been sung by a woman to me that style should be female singers)
2. A Momentary Lapse of Reason - (Pink Floyd in name only)
Now you can listen to Physical Graffiti!😂
nice!
I love them all. All are different and I refuse to rank them :)
Would love to see Rick Wakeman solo ranked
To put Gilmour's greatness in perspective, Phil Manzanarra is the rythmn guitarist for Daves band.
Talking about Manzanera: what about a ranking of the Roxy Music catalogue?
