Will be interesting to see if any of the young actors making their Broadway debuts will become stars like the young actors from the movie.

With the book/movies, as a long time fan, I recommend reading the book first, watching the original theatrical movie then the Complete Novel edition of the movie. The book, of course, gives much more detail. The theatrical version is much more dramatic due to Coppola's brother writing the score which is completely different in the Complete Novel edition which adds back in almost 30 minutes of deleted scenes.

I saw it with my husband this weekend and, while we both loved it, we did agree that it kind of necessitated the audience having a prior knowledge of the content (either movie or book). It's a lovely adaptation but it leaves so much unsaid that would help build those emotional connections that you felt that you were missing.

I am a LONG time fan of The Outsiders as I watched the movie back in1983 when I was 16 and read the book soon after. SO my expectations are VERY HIGH! lol But knowing Susie Hinton, the original author of the book, has giver her high praise, I'm pretty certain I will enjoy it.

Thank you for giving such a detailed and thoughtful review! I am a huge fan of the book, like the movie, and am dying to see the musical but financially it’s just not possible. I’m clinging onto every song, review, and clip I can get until I can get some real footage of it or it comes on tour! It was really cool to hear your perspective from someone unfamiliar with the story. I’ll be interested to see if I find the brothers vs friends relationships more compelling- I love the friendships but to me the pull and heart of The Outsiders is the relationships between Pony, Darry, and Soda. It’s a beautiful story about 3 brothers who love each other so much but are traumatized by the loss of their parents and petrified of losing each other. I wonder if it’s not portrayed quite as compellingly in the play or if all the extra info from the book really illustrates the Curtis Brothers. I heard rumors that Soda might have some struggles with alcohol in the show, which is certainly an interesting take. From Pony’s perspective in the book, he hero worships Soda, kind of how Johnny does Dally, Soda has no flaws and I wonder if it’s because that from his perspective as the little brother. Darry tried so hard in the books, but he’s just a kid himself and the character growth between him and Pony is my favorite part. It’s really interesting to read from different perspectives at different life stages- when I was 14 (pony’s age in the book) I completely understood why Pony felt so hurt by Darry and didn’t get why he was so hard on him. At 20, I realized Darry was simply remarkable, giving up his whole life on a whim to become mother and father for two little brothers when he hasn’t even figured life out himself. Now at 26, it’s astounding that he kept it together when, from my perspective now, he was a child himself and Soda and Pony were just little kids! I’m disappointed they cut Steve, Sodapop’s best friend, out of the story. I don’t know if they add new members to the gang but in the book it’s the 7 of them: Pony, Johnny, Soda, Steve, Dally, Two-Bit, and Darry (in age order). Tim Shepherd and some other greasers make appearances but aren’t part of the “gang”. This was a bit of a ramble- I just love The Outsiders and musicals and am pumped that my two favorite things are crossing over!!!

What can we do to get you to see this fabulous show? And Steve is in it, but a bit part. The other Greaser, who is played by a girl is Ace.

this was a steller review! I honeslty loved this show and it has become my favoirite so far. I do agree with a majority of what you said. Reading the book and watching the movie really did help with getting invested right away since we had that context before hand, the book is so short honestly as is the movie. The muscial definitely gives more depth to the charaacters in my opinion also. Especially the relationship between Cherry and Ponyboy.

I saw yesterday’s matinee, and I would give it a four out of five. I loved the score, both music and lyrics were strong. I just hate it when a lead actor/actress is asked to narrate the musical while acting. That is a HUGE pet peeve for me, and it’s the only reason it is not a five star show.

Thanks for the tip on seating. You saw it in previews so some things may have changed.
Seeing Suffs and Lempicka soon. Are you seeing Gatsby? Hell’s Kitchen was very good when it was at the Public. Why not see that? Alicia Keys wrote new music for the musical. It’s not just her back catalog.

Seating isn’t that big of an issue in the Jacobs. I sat on the 3rd seat in the 2nd row of the mezzanine and it was great!
I definitely recommend the mezzanine as the overhang of the orchestra is a bit much.

    • @broadwaybestfriend

I think I will try to prioritize Suffs and Lempicka next. I saw The Great Gatsby at Paper Mill so might not see it on Broadway. I didn't know there were new songs written for Hell's Kitchen good to know!
