We just took ours out of winter storage had it in a bucket with no dirt all winter but the roots look like there dead ,,so now we put it in some soil and watered it so hopefully it survives how would I tell if it’s dead
Hope it works out. They did look very dead before they suddenly developed hard lumps on the scars which eventually grew leaves. Let me know how you get on. I've just ordered another to repeat the task.
My personal opinion is that it is your choice, you can leave them to just fall down or whither away. Or alternatively tidy them up by slicing them off. I used a bread knife, diagonal slopping cuts. Best wishes. Mark
I haven't ever dusted or used fungicide. They just seem to dry up, shrivel away and then form a hard lumpy growth. Out if which eventually the new leaves grow. Mark
Hi Eddie, I've just lokked back on my Facebook and i did this the first time last July and they did really well. I recorded the vlog in this spring time and they did ok too. It's just my opinion but i woukd say start the process early on enough in the growing season that the baby plants have enough time left to establish. Assuming the end of the warm part of our year (in the UK) is up to October then i would say mid August might be the latest. However, i do know of someone who did this late summer and put them in a greenhouse and they got going through the autumn. I guess it depends on the local conditions. I'm about to do 2 more to see if i can get them up to the point where i can sell them. I might get another plant and try it again through winter as an experiment. I can get them for £10 so to me it is worth having a go even if it doesn't work. I wouldn't risk a big plant though lol
I bought a 5 foot three in a pot, for winter, I guess I’ll dry storage cut it down clean the roots let it air out dry and then I’ll put it in a shed or garage, so I have a big route balls are you saying I can cut them up?
That's a risk with such an impressive plant as yours. And I wouldn't do it heading into winter. But that's the theory yes. I'd buy a small one first if I were you.
I did this last fall and one pot has 3 pure green start while al of the others have the red variations. Do you think its possible for a tissue culture start to revert or change ?
@@MarksHouseandGardenUK Thanks They are still quite short but the same age, cut up last Oct., as al of the other ones that have red veins and leaf borders.
@@mattbaleanu good morning Matthew. Update, the success rate this time wasn't as good as the last time I did it. Of the six I produced three died and three survived, I have given the three survives away. I've reviewed how it turned out and I think losing three was a combination of a couple of things. Firstly, the original plant was very weak which didn't help their prospects. Secondly the aphids really took hold and I used some diluted soap and perhaps this caused a problem. I'm going to do this again soon so I'll make another short vlog about it.
Ive just noticed the clipped birds on top of your trees. Very rustic - I'm going to do the same with mine

Great video, it does look brutal but I think I might give it a try with one of mine😳🥴🤯👍🙂

@@MarksHouseandGardenUK Will do if I have the courage to try it and it works...
Great
Thanks you😊
I've done this a second time. And i am keeping a weekly diary on the channel. Please enjoy. And thanks again.
I definitely have a question can you propagate at the end of the summer like in September then separate them then put them up for the next spring?
I'm not sure really, are the cuttings going in a warm place? You can try I suppose...
Hi Mark, great video! I have a question regarding care of the ensete. I read that when leaves dry, i should fully remove them.. is that so?
My personal opinion is that it is your choice, you can leave them to just fall down or whither away. Or alternatively tidy them up by slicing them off. I used a bread knife, diagonal slopping cuts. Best wishes. Mark
No dusting with a fungicide? Or let the cut heal over.

Fine but from scratch! Where can I get one not preeapeard earlier just a new one .where?
In the UK we can buy these from many garden centers. Where are you? Mark
Hi Mark, when do you suggest doing this? It’s now nearly August and in the middle of a heatwave in the SE.

Hi Mark, when’s the best time to do this? It’s now July here in the SE and in the middle of a heatwave🌞Cheers
See answer below, i think this may be a duplicate comment? Thank you

@@MarksHouseandGardenUK I nervous about leaving them,,snow climate,,maybe in pots indoors but there so big
@@MarksHouseandGardenUK or cutting them down and insulate them,,I’m nervous,,they are 12 feet tall now
but how do you prop if there are no pups ???
hi there, this method is for red bananas - which don't make pups - but each segement should grow individual babies. mark

Hi larry that's fascinating. My feeling is that the green ones will eventually go red. How old are they now?

The green one probably had more light.
Honesty Box? Lol In the city no way.
Lol I know, a friend of mine asked me to tell him when the box is full... Actually it's OK around here😆😊
Ps. Thank you for watching it.
Any update on the plants?
