    Sam, thank you for posting this brief video for the noobs out here. I am in my mid 60's and the last time I played live was in 1978. When children begin arriving at the age of 20, you tend to pack your dreams back into the case and store them in a closet. I was in the right spot, stationed just north of LA on the PCH between Malibu and Carpentaria. Once discharged, I was in the right place, but it was the wrong time. I had no real life experience back then, I had NOTHING to say and that was probably the main reason I walked away. There was NO INTERNET, you had to walk out your front door and dig up a place to play if you wanted to get anywhere. Wolves on every corner waiting for you to walk by and give you an opportunity, 'under' their control. It was the only way.
    But times have changed and guess what? I have something to say now. It is NEVER too late, thank you for giving me a jumping-off place because this is on like Donkey Kong. I will be back, spending some money now . . . . . Oh yes, a benefit of waiting this long is I have the funds to do as I please. Hahahahahahahaha. No one to control my art, no band members to throw chairs at; it is a good time to be alive.

    I suppose it's hard to NOT start with a DAW in 2024, but I had to go a different direction. When I got back into music last year after a 20-year break, I went the hardware route with the Tascam DP-24sd. Gives me an excuse to collect a bunch of classic rack hardware, too. :)

    I recommended the scarlet and sm57 to a singer songwriter writer friend a while back and when I was running him through how it works I was even surprised at the tone we were able to achieve with such a simple setup. We didn’t even use a mic stand. For headphones we went with the classic Sony mdr 7506.

      M50x always gets hate. But it’s excellent. And used by many musicians. Not just Nashville. Even pop artists use it for recording.. it’s great. But if you don’t like it use another. Your creativity is more important. Equipment is just that. I had mine for 10 years. Still great.

    • @TheFIghtin
      @TheFIghtin 5 місяців тому

      @@jotjotzzz5357 It gets hate because it's labeled as something its not. It gets hate because the supposed inferior headphones in it's own line up are better than it. It gets hate because the Yamaha rebrand is built better. The M50x is a decent pleasure can in the $100-200 price range. Nothing more, nothing less. It gets hate when you have people like this inexperienced dude recommending it when there's actual legitimate monitors that are better for the job at half the price. I really hate to be so frank on this, but in order to get good music you need good equipment. The M50x is not at the professional level. Period.
      I've had the M50x for probably about 7 years. Brand new it was a decent enough headphone to kick back and relax to. But my repertoire of headphones advanced past it, with both high end sets, modified sets, and cheaper but better sounding sets. It's been stuff in a drawer somewhere for the past 6 1/2 years. To the point if it ever comes out of the drawer it probably will just get tossed. They are absolutely the best starting headphone anyone can get, because you just don't know what you're missing with better equipment until you hear it.
      Hint- Get a M60x. It's the same drivers as the M50, yet somehow worlds better.

    A laptop , a rode mic and MPC software 🤯 . the sound engine in mpc software is so strong that it’s like a digital interface built into it and pushes out a super high quality sound . The plugin that comes with it is all you need you can auto tune , soft clip , etc you can do so much it has any effect you can think off even make your song sound a vintage record player sound effortless. I never saw anyone use it , I have a full studio with pro tools , mpc x , fl studio, reasons 13 , Logic Pro , mpc key 61 . I was on vacation and had nothing but my laptop and I met this girl who can sing , I recorded her on mpc software and the raw vocals sounded almost mastered after the track was done 🤯🤯🤯

    1:00 the MAC OS have limited plugins now on market like example, vst plugins, effects, MIDI instruments (plugins) it seems nowadays the companies develop mostly for Windows because is most accessible price for Windows OS and PCs. 700$ for MAC OS laptop with this money I will purchase gaming PC. Why? Because some of the plugins give some massive load on CPU like the synth products on Arturia. With laptop you will not able run some programs/plugins because of lack of CPU power

    You should look into a pair of Beyerdyanmic DT-150 (250ohm I suppose) -- the cup size is very large and isolates outside noise naturally. Very comfortable and for non-production purposes you can move the drivers around your ears to get the best "sound stage", assuming you've got small-ish ears. $200 is a big ask but they last quite a long time. I have a pair I need to retire soon (bought in 2008 (so 16 years, ~$13 a year)) because my long hair eventually got into the driver of one, wasn't taking care of the phones like I should have.
    Of course DT-150s are classic monitoring phones for being on the floor and doing overdubs, for yonks. See them in old documentaries about Pink Floyd & others doing their recordings and such. It's a very recognizable set of cans.
    I'm not sure about Beyerdynamic's other offerings, I hear good things... DT-150 holds a special place in my heart just for casual listening, gaming, & multi-media.
    All your other things were good options. There are fake SM57s out there, looking for a different sound around the same price point, Lewitt LCT 240 is interesting. Cheers.

    • @Samwimer

      I've never got to try a pair of DT-150s, but a close friend of mine had a pair of the DT-770s and I absolutely LOVED them. The comfort alone was insane not to mention the driver quality. Definitely worth the extra coin if you have got it.
      Thanks so much for watching the video man! I love to hear what other gear everybody is using!

    Do you have any recommendations for someone with only an iPhone and iPad, who isn't recording studio-level anything, just hoping to do some decent-sounding vocal covers/virtual karaoke, but could maybe translate to doing local live gigs down the line?
    So far, my research has me looking at the Scarlett Solo or 2i2 interface (3rd or 4th gen), a Shure SM57/SM58 or Audio-Technica AT2020 mic, the Apple USB 3 camera adapter (for connecting the interface to a Lightning port), and whatever other accessories I might need (stand, pop filter, cables, etc). Am I on the right track?

    • @Samwimer
      @Samwimer  3 місяці тому

      You are definitely on the right track! The most important thing to do is assess what your end goal is and to get gear to help you towards that goal.
      Starting with just your phone is a perfect idea, and if you decide making music isn't for you then no harm no foul. If you want to upgrade a bit then the gear you just listed is a perfect place to start, and was exactly where I started too!
      SM58 is better for live vocals then an SM57. Also I have a volt 276 and an Iphone 15 pro and they interface with no issues. Just plug and play. Just thought I'd mention that!
      I hope this helps at least a little, and I wish you the best!!😊

      @@Samwimer to be honest I’m blown away with the unit-4’s they have an extremely flat response. The battery lasts an impressively long time. I have been able to work on tracks for 6 hours then use them to listen to reference tracks for hours. Getting to hear your music outside immediately is dope. I have also been able to record foley with my phone and drop it strait into a project which is wild. Yesterday I was writing music in the woods. They get loud and most impressively the bass extension starts at 40Hz. I’m thinking I might pair with a woojer vest to take care of the sub bass in the future but the fact I can throw these in a bag and get this level of sound quality I’m seriously impressed. I have yet to get the battery below 40% and I have had them on for about 16 hours a day since I got them. Then I charge them in under 2 hours. Like all of their claims seem to be under promising over delivering on every level. I’m surprised there aren’t more people talking about them

    • @Samwimer
      @Samwimer  5 місяців тому

      Hey Jonathan! I recommended those sizes since they are the only ones I have actually used myself. I'm sure the 7's are just as good!
      For your interface, make sure you have the right inputs! If you have an acoustic kit you really need to figure out how you are going to mic that bad boy. Like if you are micing the whole kit you probably have 5-10 mics running and need an interface with that many inputs. Or you might be micing the kit with just 2 overheads! I'm not sure what your specific setup is. For an electric kit just check your outputs and choose from there. I know my brother's electric kit has two 1/4-inch outputs OR a USB output that can be routed to MIDI. So think about your set-up ahead of time and find some options that fit your goals.
      Also, check out getting gear from sweetwater.com I'm not affiliated or sponsored with them at all, but they have really good customer service and I'm pretty sure you could get somebody on the phone and they could make some great recommendations as well!
      Hope this helps!

    • @Samwimer
      @Samwimer  4 місяці тому

      I think either of those mics would serve you well! Both mics have a similar sound, but the akg p120 is a condenser mic so it is a little more sensitive and will grab more detail. So only go the condensor route if you have decent sound treatment where you are recording. Otherwise, you will pick up a lot of background noise with it.
      The sm57 is a dynamic mic, and has good built-in sound rejection. So if you are in a room with not much treatment, it will be more forgiving. If this is a really big project budget-wise, I would also suggest looking at the sm7B. That's my main mic and had incredible sound rejection and works great in my tiny little box studio.
      I have a few other videos on my channel where I talk about these mics, and compare them. Check those out and do some more research before you buy!
