The Best Part Of Rickson Gracie's Game Is His Defense - JJM Interview

- Rickson Gracie is widely regarded by many as the greatest BJJ practitioner of all time.
The question is: why was Rickson Gracie so good? What makes him so special?
When we listen to people who have trained with Rickson, usually the story goes like this: “oh his pressure and control are amazing, I couldn’t do anything to him”, or like Dave Camarillo said once: “Training with Rickson is like trying to move a house.”
In a recent interview to the brazilian website Portal do Vale Tudo, Jean Jacques Machado, who has been training with Rickson since he was a kid, shared a little insight that we don’t hear very often about Rickson.
I felt like it was my duty to translate it to English, not only to help spread this valuable info about Rickson, but also to see if YOU can benefit from it and maybe improve YOUR game.

Professor Gasperin thank you for the translation. I see a similar game to Roger Gracie... Roger's defense is excellent and gives him supreme confidence. It's like having a life vest or scuba tank while surfing big waves, it gives you extra confidence in trying risky offensive moves. Very insightful, thank you.
Great piece, Professor. I appreciate you taking time to translate for us. I'm sure many other do, too!
My pleasure Gary!!
Yeah thanks a lot! Sometimes I wonder about how much insight I’m missing by not being able to speak Portuguese , keep it up !
He does read your mind. I grappled Rickson once in the late 90s. He actually sets you up and can feel what you are going to do before you even know what you are going to do. Never felt anything like it.
Great point Jim!
Rickson Gracie is the Mozart of Jiu Jitsu... Doesn't matter if music "evolved", there will be nothing compared to Mozart!
Thank you for the translation! So many interviews without subtitles or translations out there, so this was very helpful.
Thank you Sei!
I'm curious about what he was talking about base, connection
Great perspective! Thank you, Professor!
You are welcome Hank!
This is fantastic, Gustavo. I had the good fortune to train at Rickson's Pico school in the mid to late 90's. He wasn't there much as he was traveling, but I can attest to seeing him run through everyone in class with what appeared to be minimal effort. I also spent the first 3 years working on defense almost exclusively. I didn't know any better at the time, but it was a great way to learn and now I know it wasn't by chance.
That's awesome, thanks for letting us know, you are a lucky person.
As usual, good one Gustavo!
Thanks Lubo!
In an interview, Rickson said rolling with Renzo was almost like "walking in a park"
I like your videos Profesor Gustavo. Good stuff.
Thanks Paulo!
Thanks, Gustavo :)
You are welcome Sam!!
Thanks
Thanks Professor Gasperin!
You are welcome Stanton!
I think JJ said this same think when interviewed by Joe Rogan. I watched it several months ago.
True legend osss
If you were doing this since birth you'd be just as good. Put in the time folks.
My instructor trained with Rickson and said he teaches way more than technique. Connection is the key and he makes very subtle changes the you can't feel. My instructor said it's like trying to fight an empty jacket. There are lifers that have trained with him and he changed the game for them completely. Check out Roy Dean rolling with Roy Harris. Roy Harris is toying with his black belt. Also listen to the Machado podcast with Joe Rogan.
amazing video. in your opinion what are some ways one can work to create a great defense? not allowing opponent to pass your guard, open guard defenses etc?
Primarily working on worst case scenarios, like escaping the most dominant positions: side control, mount, and back.
Also sharpening submission escapes/defenses.
Defense is about recognizing the attack, and taking away any one of the steps required to finish. All submissions take a number of steps to complete, so defense is easier because you only need to kill one of those steps. The real key is recognizing the attack, and understanding whats required to finish the submission.
Who do you think wins rickson or marcelo in a nogi sub only match
I would put my money on Marcelo. Rickson was amazing, his son Kron is a true warrior. But Marcelo Garcia is the king of No Gi.
@@17daimon but why does nobody talk about marcelo the way they talk about Rickson?
@@varunjitsboyaditya8881 They do but more in a lb for lb sense. Marcelo, god like though he is has been beaten by a few bigger athletes in no gi. Rickson being from Helio's side of the family hasn't competed a lot in grappling, if at all.
@@jimmynich4791 Man what a shame it is to not have any videotapes of rickson rolling with world champions and making them look like white belts...xande and saulo said that
??
00:50 lol
:)
Can Jean Jacques tap Rickson?
"moving a house"
JJM is Carlinhos' first cousin on his mom's side.
Carlson Gracie was the greatest Gracie fighter Rodger Gracie was the greatest sport Jiu Jitsu fighter of the family
Rickson? Rener? Ryron?:Renzo?
Marcello Garcia is the greatest of all time SPORT WISE
Marcelo is one of the greatest indeed, gi and nogi, along with Roger in my opinion.
@@MMALeech i enjoy the mendes brothers style of sport BJJ also
@@TheCheapReefer me too, they are great!
Sorry. All the legends that built their name in the pre open-competition with documentation era will always be myths to me. I've seen the old videos, hours of them. Modern world class purple belts could beat those guys. Not the purple belt at your local gym. World class. And modern black belts? Forget it, they would maul the priors.
No shot. Zero chance what your sayings is correct. Either you don't train or you train at a soft gym. The guys that are actually training the "modern black belts" as you put it are telling you that guys like rickson were the best to ever do it. Guys like Saulo and Fabio Grugel (marcello Garcia's instructor....along with a bunch of other world champs) are tell stories about how they would go train with rickson within a week of winning a world championship (when rickson wasn't even training) and he would tap them at will over and over. I've been doing bjj for almost 30 years and I've had the privilege of training with guys from both eras and I've seen the evolution and while interesting the newer era is no better then the old era...the focus is different. Anyone that thinks theres some great evolution and it's a completely different game now doesn't actually train. Not with anyone serious. Don't buy into Keenan quotes that are only based on how fancy a person's game is.... roger and kron are very old school and both of them crush everyone in front of them.
