Turning Scrap Wood Into a $40 Jewelry Box With a CNC Machine

  • In this video I put a piece of scrap wood into my small CNC machine and make a $40 jewelry box with a custom engraved monogram on the lid.
    I sell these tiny wooden boxes for around 40 dollar each on buy/sell pages on FB. The custom engraving on the lid turn this into a great personal gift.
    I made the box with the Shapeoko 3 CNC machine. It should be possible to make 3-4 boxes per hour.
    If you are interested in the Gcode for this box please leave a comment.

    If you cut little boxes like this on a 45deg angle you get a consistant grain on all sides

    I've done something very similar on my shapeoko. If you were going to go into production I would suggest using your bandsaw to cut raw material to within 1/4 of finished size and then using a drill press vice for work holding. That way you have one operation to mill the outside and inside profiles, then flip it over and deck it off with another simple operation, no tabs required and much easier to secure/locate.

    Amazing I wish I had the knowledge to program a CNC.
    I've been CNC machining for few months now and really considering to invest in a laptop,cad and machine.
    Love wood work that's my background but fell into CNC machining alloy and steel this really excites me

    Very nice! I find that with a lot of paints, the wood absorbs a lot of the paint so that it shows even after sanding. Do you have any ideas on this; do you find that wiping off the majority of the excess (as you do) is enough?

    • @DieterSchneider
      @DieterSchneider  7 років тому

      Thanks. Wiping off helps but I also sand. As long as the engraving is dep enough it's not a problem. Another method is to finish it first then engrave and paint. This way the paint does not go down in the wood but it must also be sanded and finished again so it's more time consuming.

    • @TjallingBlackCat
      @TjallingBlackCat 7 років тому +1

      Thanks for the response! That last one is a great idea (while indeed more time-consuming); I'll see if that works for me.

    • @DieterSchneider

      I use a Makita router (I guess it's the same "class" as the Dewalt) so it's quite noisy as well. Here I'm using a 1/4 inch spiral cutter bit. I don't have VFD. I'll publish the gcode for download on my site soon (www.dieter.me)
