Whoever his apprentice/helper is I hope they appreciate how fortunate they are to be learning from someone like him. I'm a carpenter myself and ive worked for a variety of tradesmen- some skilled and some less so and a wide array of customers/ budgets and I can say from experience that attention to the details like Shoyan gives is rare no matter what the cost of a house is. It's clear he treats every project as a labor of love.

My man builds entire houses as precicely as a master woodworker and countless levels above the standards of carpentry in my country. Aswel l- there are so many aspects to these houses and he does everything - from milling to finishing - i've never seen anything so considered and requiring this many skills in a tradesman. The way the timber is presented after finishing is just so beautiful. Everything about him screams master - from the speed/exactness of his work to the efficiency of being multiple steps ahead of the ball in his methods - for the small tasks and big picture. So glad this is documented - I think he will raise the standard for a lot of people who have been fortunate to find this channel. Much respect and best wishes for you and your family Shoyan-San from Australia

@@Spencer-e2v Ohh I think you're being a little hard on the Beav without giving enough credit where credit is due. I haven't met any number of great carpenters anywhere along the way.
It's one thing to talk about this and that yet another to replicate from one to the next.

Im a carpenter in UK. This amazing work makes me feel like a butcher. The detail in the sofit and facial is incredable. We just bang up plastic facial boards , sofits ect. This is everything about quality, the timber it self looks so well machined. The building sites I was on were usually a complete mess. WOW ! Thank you Soyan!

The pitch of the roof indicates over X length the roof falls Y height, this information is indicated or discoverable by the plans or by measuring with a level in the reverse of the below. By lining up the square ruler with the X on one ruler and the Y on the other ruler against an edge of the board that sets the angle of the straightedge where he can scribe a line. By matching the scribed lines on two faces of the board he is able to draw the compound angle for his blade to follow. This will work even if the two roof sections have a different pitch.

Shoyan uses a right-angled curved ruler. This is called a "sasigane," and with this tool, Japanese carpenters create Japanese architecture with a complex combination of verticals, horizontals, and angles. In addition, this tool can be used to measure the circumference of a log. It can be said that they use trigonometric functions, calculus, square roots, and so on.
The art of using the "sasigane" is called "kikujutu," a wooden building tradition that dates back to the late 6th century.

It remains amazing to me how nice the wood is. Shoyan doesn't need to closely look at his boards for cracks and warping like we do in America. I can see that he looks at them but the wood is trustworthy enough for a glance to suffice.
