I've only just gotten into Ash. I don't know how I missed it for so long, I've just been listening to the strokes for the last 10 years because nothing was grabbing my attention
Ash are such an underrated band. Huge in the 90s but (wrongly) not remembered in the same way as Oasis and so on. This and "Girl From Mars" are absolute chooooooooons
Yeah they are, I agree. Ash should have gotten more credit than they actually did. They weren't pure indie, they had some punky/grungy tracks too so they were a crossover band basically. First gig I ever went to way back in 1998! Amazing fun show. I never listen to them much these days because I'm into metal now but they will always have a special place in my heart. As to why they were underrated; 2 reasons:- There were loads of other indie/britrock bands at the time that got the all the media attention instead, so they went under the radar (basically their breakthrough into the market was bad timing). Also they lacked image. Look at Oasis back then; the Gallagher brothers antics help mould their marketing image, consequently enhancing record sales. Ash were just as talented but didn't get the same adulation. That's kinda unfair but it's just how the music industry operates sadly.
I bought it blindly because of the title and was pleasantly surprised. 1977 was a good year for me. It even had a song referencing Star Wars, Darkside Lightside. (in 1996 Star Wars fandom was dead). ua-cam.com/video/XAXa1_Az2bg/v-deo.html

I loved the key changes in this song. Loved the mid-90s in general too, when the charts were mostly just indie vs dance. The charts died in 2001 with Popstars / Hear'Say, and other reality TV sheep that followed thereafter.
Agreed. The chords are so strangely arranged. This isn't just a banger (which it is), it's kind of a strange number for a leadoff single. A top 5 hit in the UK no less. Loved 1977. Such a great great album.
Still holds up - a classic, timeless song from a band which is sadly underrated. Saw them play in Portland, Oregon yesterday in front of 30 people but 25 of us sang to every song and Tim, Mark and Rick were still loving playing the music they wrote as teenagers.

Music like this really goes to show the '90s were truly epic. I was 14 in 1996, just getting into music, finding my sound. As such I feel blessed that '96 was such a fantastic year for music. Weird to think that in years to come, people will be saying the same about this decade, getting all nostalgic and misty eyed, even though 90% of todays output is naff... and now I sound like my dad. [Verse 1]
Move closer
Set my mind on fire
Taking over
The world seems so alive, oh ah ooh
The world seems so alive
[Chorus]
She slips into the night and she is gone
Gone to set the score, gone into the town
Rain shining in her eyes
Her brother started school again today
A thought to pass the time, to occupy my mind
While I'm waiting for her
[Verse 2]
Down in the basement
Listening to the rain
Thinking things over
I think it over again, oh ah ooh
I think it over again
[Chorus]
She slipped into the night and she was gone
Gone to set the score, gone into the town
Rain shining in her eyes
Her brother started school again today
A thought to pass the time, to occupy my mind
While I'm waiting for her
[Instrumental]
[Verse 3]
I'm riding it down
Listen to the rain
She'll be here soon
I lie back and drift away, oh ah ooh
I lie back and drift away
[Chorus]
She slipped into the night and she was gone
Gone to set the score, gone into the town
Rain shining in her eyes
Her brother started school again today
A thought to pass the time, to occupy my mind
While I'm waiting for her
[Outro]
I'm feeling so alive, feeling so real
On a stormy night, the rain is coming down
Rain like never before
I've got some records on and some bottles of wine
On a stormy night, the rain is lashing down
And I'm waiting for her
