- A day in the life of a Japanese Toy Maker at Sega Toys in Tokyo Japan. This is what a typical day working in Japan is like at a Toy company as a Japanese worker. We see Japanese work culture throughout the day and see how it is to work in japan as well how it is to live in Japan during this time before work and after work. Kana works at Sega Toys, creating some of the most popular toys in Japan, formed in 1998 from its parent company Sega, one of the largest video game and entertainment companies in the world. Although many of the Sega Sammy companies are located in the same building, Sega Toys operate independently with 110 hard working staff to create award winning toys even with major brands like anpanman and disney. Kana is originally from Aichi prefecture but moved to Yamanashi prefecture to attend university majoring in Regional Sociology. Like many Japanese university students, she started her shushoku katsdo, aka Job Hunting while in school and was able to secure employment before graduation which led her to Tokyo to start a new life and career. And as a person who has a deep appreciation for all things cute and fun, she naturally found a fit at her job for the last 4 years as a Toy Planner creating Japanese toys.

Thats normal. Thats literally her job. Everywhere in the world in that industry does the same. The idea doesnt have to be out of this world/unique. It can be related to a current project your company has or your team is working on. Example @ 4:45 the little figurine is one of her 50 ideas/products last year, which, Im assuming was part of the "beatcats" project that her team was working on.

Paolo is getting big companies jumping on this A Day in the Life bandwagon and the viewers really enjoy it. We don’t just get to see the behind the scenes but it’s also one way of promoting the company. I wanna buy the dog! The products are so cute😂
Paolo is miles beyond majority of Japan vloggers, many of whom seem to do the same topics over and over. Paolo's Day in the Life series goes above and beyond to show a side of Japanese life we don't get to see often.

I can imagine with the great resignation happening all over the world, companies would jump on this opportunity to show their company isn't that bad to work in lol. I think it worked out for the best for this dude. He was just making these videos for views and for fun but due to covid and the repercussions of covid, his "A day in the life of" series has corporate use lol. Good for him.
Yes the products are so cute as you say, but when I look at all the plastic and fur all I see is future landfill. I wonder if Japan ships its waste to another country and labels it as recycled like other developed countries?

I like the CEO already. Mad respect for her to just have her desk in between the other employers. :D Usually you don't see them at all.
I really liked seeing the others too who have helped develop toys.
ive had a job in the past where me as entry level was within eye sight of the CEO. ive seen a few other people comment its a bad thing and its done for control and is bad for the employees, but honestly, it depends on who the CEO is. if theyre an a hole then sure, but in my experience, and best i can tell from this video, its a positive thing. it was my manager at this job that was the one i avoided at all costs, not the CEO.
That is pretty common in the Japanese industry.
The desk of the leader or head of department or manager (buchou/kaichou) is located among the other staff.
I remember from an HR management class in university, that the president of Intel in the 90's was doing the same in the US. And since in those years, Japan was the main supplier of chip production equipment, I now finally know where he took the idea.

Hey Sega i love the Sonic racing games, thank you for all your hard work.
I'm always amazed at the incredible behind the scenes logistics Paolo has to go through to 1) get permission from the company, the worker, and other related office/co-workers to allow him to showcase their lives, products, etc. Equally amazing are all the things he does like recording the waking up and morning routine scenes (I'm sure they had to wake up earlier to let him in their apartment), as well as getting ahead to the train station platform to capture the worker exiting the train!
I've liked this series a lot and am glad more and more companies are allowing a sneak peek into what it is like to work in different job sectors in Japan!
Ive thought about this. And in this video atleast it seems like they met at the train station for the first time as he introduces the video there and says how excited he is. As he goes home with her later then I assume they recreate the morning routine as this would be easier probably. No Idea how he captured her walking to the train station then though. We really need a "a day in the life of paolo" lol.

Probably Paolo is being approached by the company to promote their products. The company selects top performance employee to represent them. At the end, it’s a win-win situation for Paolo, the company, and the employee. They all get their fare of share. It all makes sense. Lol

Amazing. I was thinking "wow" when I saw most of those toys. I'm retired now. I spent my life as a computer programmer, and project leader. Working at SEGA seems like one of the best jobs in the world.
I love how the company's CEO is sitting together with all the other employees and you would never know that she is actually the CEO.

I love that the CEO didn't want her own separate office and wanted to be closer to all the employees to be more accessible. That mindset is amazing for a leader tbh

I don’t think it’s meant to show the CEO Is equal. It’s a control thing. Everyone will be on their best behavior and have a stick up their butt during work. Plus they make them log everything they did during the day. Talk about trust issues

what i love about japanese workers is how polite and happy they seem. i know not everyone is always happy but it warms my heart when someone really loves their work. not everyone can pursue what they love

What a coincidence. I am from Montreal, Canada however, doing business in Japan and one of our clients is SegaSammy. So I know this building very well. Wonderful people at this company. We were involved in the creative strategy for the IR/Casino project in Yokohama. Sadly, because of COVID, everything was postponed. I have visited all those places. @@ShaferHart yeah but it is Japan. Developed country but gender equality is lower than much poorer developing country China. Women usually becomes housewives after marriege. It is their society norm. So it is hard to see women in higher position because they marry before becoming CEO.

The fact that I would buy the computer toy at 12:20 says so much about Sega's toys appealing not only to children but young adults too! The colours on the toy packagings look so pretty and colourful. Thank you to these amazing toy makers!

Hi I been a subscriber for a few years. The first thing that caught me was the day in the life videos from Japan different people working at different companies. Then as time went on I began enjoying Japans culture. So thank you for taking the time to bring your subscribers in on Japans lifestyle and also thanks for allowing me to get a inside look into your life meaning your girlfriend pregnancy and etc.
I would love to learn more about how the interview process is done in Japan. I can imagine it being very different than places like the US, and it would be a very unique way took look at the job culture and what it like to be a young professional!

@@Matpeixelegal When I was an exchange student, all my Japanese friends spoke about job hunting like it was joining the Marines or something. The cultural expectation of lifetime employment, while mostly unrealistic, is still there which ups the stakes and therefore stress.

I really like this "Day in the life" series. You do a really good job of presenting people's' lives in Japan in a way that's both informative and entertaining.,
To me it’s really interesting that Kana majored in sociology and became a toy designer! I have a friend from college who works for a toy company as a designer in a major city here in the US, and one of the hiring requirements for her department was for them to have some type of design / art degree. (My friend has a BA Illustration degree) A sociology major makes sense though, for this type of job. You need to understand trends and human behavior to know what kids will want, after all!
I feel like in Japan it doesn't matter so much what you studied as long as you studied. At least that was my experience I observed while working there.
@@happyhappyaus2128 Heard the same. The logic goes as "if you studied at Tokyo University you can learn anything no matter what you studied". So as an developer they would rather take someone who studied Biologie of an renown University than someone who studied IT at an "Shitty" university....

@@cookie12932 Not really in Japan. At least if it is for your first job right after uni in a large company. What @bla blup said is exactly what happens in Japan. Some companies even have quotas (limits to how many university of tokyo or equivalent grads they take as to expand the recruting pool). Only for some very limited jobs you must have the degree in the area they are hiring.
@@cookie12932 nope. Japanese companies have this culture where what you learn in university doesnt really matter because the companies see fresh grads as blank slates and they train them from zero. The name of the university matters much more than the degrees.

It's amazing how much this series has grown! It seems like all the SEGA employees were briefed that Paolo is gonna film his series. It's not just simply following 1 employee like his old videos but several of them which is a big deal bc he's taking time off their work. Amazing!

all his videos are basically PR videos for the company involved. It's likely Paolo contacted company with video idea and they picked a good candidate to show their culture and product.

IIRC the toy cat on the CEO's desk (7:19) looks like a model used in our neurology center and hospice care settings to calm patients with dementia. It has sensors that cause it purr and do cat-like things when you interact with it.
As a former Industrial Designer it's so amazing to see the industry thriving in this capacity in Japan. This would be a dream job, but in Australia where I live, there is no longer any product manufacturing being done here which is really sad...

I live in China and let me tell you, its more amazing, and more cheap, i design a lot of products here and it’s amazing, a lot of Japanese comes to china to buy and export products to Japan.
@@Mudisolo I've always thought about moving to China for work, but I've heard mixed things. Really would depend on the company you work for. I worked as a furniture designer for a few years in Malaysia, and while it was very fulfilling, my pay really sucked and I was always broke haha
@@lazyreuvin oh yeah you are right about that, you need to work for a big company in Shanghai, they pay good and quality life for foreigners are high, if it’s another city of China, I don’t recommend, salaries are very low if you are not in Shanghai.

Great episode in the series as always! The fact some CEO's have open offices in the middle of a common floor is quite refreshing and admirable. Most western bosses have secluded offices and there's a whole lot of bureaucracy between them and their employees.
i mean...if the CEO is right there...it'll probably help boost productivity in the room too......

I think this one is my favourite video that you’ve done so far in the “day in the life of” series. I’m an almost 30 year old woman but this video made me want to buy all the toys they showed lol!
Kana's episode was so comforting for some reason. One of my favorite bits was the online meeting with her coworkers for dinner. It's so nice to see people making time to connect with each other. 💖

It seems she has a lot of freedom doing her job besides meetings and due dates, like no one its monitoring her work, she just does it and shows the results. Thats nice. Also, she enters i assume around 9am or something like that, only 30min commuting i think that being Japan its awesome. The working time its also incredible for being japan, she made her 8h (+lunch time) and went home. She started the day at a pretty nice hour in the morning and left not so late in the afternoon and didnt make extra hours (although it seems some of her coworkers did). It seems a great environment for work actually
Japan have changed alot when it comes to working hours. They had alot of suicides because of people working to much overtime

9:45 I feel MasKook was one of the best ideas, it's simple and cheap, and has the potential to be in the market for a very long time and not go out of fashion.
