The song was about fame and how people change and become fake. As they had a few albums out by this point they saw people change around them. It also won a Grammy for best metal song. Which really was ironic.
I feel there's a other meaning too I imagine it could be about a father that doesn't want to take care of his liver and loses interests and leaves once she changes to a mother
This is from White Pony, their 3rd studio album. They currently have 9 studio albums, plus a B-sides and rarities and a covers album, so you guys are barely scratching the surface. This song is about people acting different just to get attention. Off this album please do "RX Queen" next. ❤🤘
At the time it came out I felt this was a throwback to prove they were still aggressive. The breakdown you're looking for is on a song called "Korea". I'll say the same thing I say in a comment on every reaction channel that covers a song from White Pony: White Pony is a perfect album. Every song is amazing and the track list plays like a weird dream. This is summer music for me. Night time, street lights, late sunsets, and people out and about in the streets. You could review every song on this album and get a different take on each one and Deftones fans will eat that shit up. Always down for White Pony.
This song won a Grammy when it came out. It's on the Dragonball Z Lord Slug sound track too. It's off White Pony, I usually skip this on the album because the rest of this is more chill.
Yup, it was used in the lord slug movie where lord slug is beating the shit out of Goku. A classic moment for me for sure since it had two things I love which is DBZ and Deftones.
Definitely the most in your face track on White Pony. Please do the song Hexagram, it’s my favorite song and it’s the first track on the self titled album that came after white pony.
What a choice 😏 this was on the same album as Change, Passenger etc. Middle of their career. Deftones never do two songs the same but they are all unmistakably Deftones! This is their song to lose your shit to at their gigs.
So at this point we need Deftone's OK computer. They've earned their place in the pantheon of the greats. I'd love to see them pull a masterpiece of art thou far into it. Adrenaline and White Pony are already classics stamped to history. Time for their Dark Side, or Disinformation.
This is one of their heavier songs for sure. When Girls Telephone Boys is probably their heaviest song, Engine No.9 is very heavy also. And both songs are absolute jams!
Not every Deftones song has a formula, but every album does. Every album has low tempo songs with haunting lyrics that invade your head space. This is counter balanced by a couple of songs that are aggressive AF so you can work out your anger issues. Then there are songs that balance the two. This is because the band itself is a balance of styles. Stephen Carpenter is a true heavy metal lead guitarist, his riffs are heavy and dark and he plays prominently in tracks like Elite. Abe Cunningham is more of a numetal drummer and leans heavily toward the rhythmic hip hop side of the genre. He doesn’t use a double bass kicker and prefers to focus on upper rhythmic beats, think Digital Bath. Chino on the other hand can cross both sides with a beautiful voice capable of almost any range including metal screams that are totally unique to him and almost impossible to mimic. The cool thing is he can switch up his vocals from aggressive to melodic almost instantly. If you have seen them live you would agree that it is fascinating to see. God rest his soul, Chi Cheng was an incredible bassist who also leaned into more funky and groovy baselines. His style famously conflicted with Carpenter’s style. Current bassist Sergio Vega sticks to Chi’s style. That said this band is a melting pot of styles which is why they appeal to such a wide audience and why listening to an album is like an insane therapy session. My favorite band of all time!!
This is from White Pony" (2000) and it follows the track "Digital Bath". Deftones have never been just "mellow" or just "aggressive", ALL their albums have that contrast where you can find a "chill" tune mixed with heavier ones and others in between. Also, Chino is known for his screams, and those are always present in their albums. Actually, the whole concept of "contrast" is a signature of their sound.
This is one of my favorite short-hitters of theirs. Can we just applaud that beast of a couplet: “You’re into depression ‘Cause it matches your eyes” Talk about economy of language in making a point. Whew. Great reaction as always, y’all! See ya on FB, IG, and e’rywhere ya be! \m/@@\m/
If you're looking for more deftones, check out Bloody Cape. If you're looking for the band that deftones always wanted to be (their words), check out Will Haven. Songs like "I've Seen My Fate", "Carpe Diem" and "Fresno".
Deftones' song "Elite" is about the process of growing up, discovering yourself and maturing to your fullest potential. He encourages listeners to realize their true potential and deeply embrace it, and it is through this process that they will eventually gain control of their lives. The song emphasizes that it is necessary to go through some struggles or phases in life before you can fully let go and immerse yourself in new clarity and purpose. The chorus perfectly sums up this message with its repeated refrain of "When you're mature, you'll bleed out of control" suggesting that the individual must go through the necessary process of growth, change, and emotional maturity in order to take full control of their life.
The first time I heard this song, Goku from Dragon Ball Z was practically curb-stomping someone named Slug. To this day, every time this song plays, I consider it a fight song. Even after learning what the song may *actually* be about, that probably won't change. XD
That one and the first Cooler movie. I don't remember what other Dragon Ball movies had Deftones in their American OST. Aside from that, there's also Queen of the Damned, which was practically made by Korn, but had members from bands such as Linkin Park, Disturbed, and Deftones in the OST.
Deftones we’re hard AF on their first two albums and still would bring some of that sound to their later albums. No one can scream like Chino. You should listen to Head Up on around the fur. It’s super aggressive
This hit me hard when I first listened to this. I was starting to go deep into sadness and depression going into my late teens and got attached to Staind's heavy sound and lyrics. Then the song's line 'you like depression, cuz it marches your eyes'. Man, that shook me up to my core.
That’s a sick deftones shirt, where you get it from ? I am a deftones mega fan. I know all of the songs and this song in particular was on replay for a while when I was angry at the world.
Hey boys so basically what the song is trying to say is that: When you're RYYYYY When you're RYYYYY You'll BLEED outta control! You'll Bleed outta control!
Great song, great reaction. If you like this dark, heavy side of Deftones, try When Girls Telephone Boys of their self-titled…one of my favorite tracks by them
man we used to blast this entire album all the time for like 3 years straight oh and Don't call Deftones new metal Chino hates that they didn't want to be new metal they wanted to be who they are that's why they continue to evolve their sound because they didn't want to be a part of that new metal s*** and get hunkered in with it

Y’all were feeling this one. White Pony is by far one of my favorite albums of all time.
It's just objectively one of the best most creative, listenable, innovative rock albums of all time. Total game changer
Deftones - Teething (from The Crow: City of Angels soundtrack). One of their hardest… 🤘🏼
Please don't remind people that more than one "The Crow," movie exists!!
😂
Totally putting this disc in my Porsche tomorrow, putting on Elite and blasting this down so cal Coast Highway.
I have had dreams several times, of me driving a Porsche listening to Deftones. Enjoy your ride

I listened to white pony at work tonight. Perfect for post sunset twilight driving. "Passenger" played just as it got dark.
