  • Tenkara fishing with dry flies on backcountry lakes in the High Uinta Wilderness of Utah. July is a perfect time of the year to head back to these lakes to find trout rising for many different hatches. I took along family and friends to one of my favorite areas of the Uintas in hopes of finding lots of hungry fish. The fishing was absolutely fantastic but at the same time, very sporadic. Fish would rise all around us like crazy for 5-10 minutes at a time and shut off for 30-45 minutes. The wind was also an opposing factor for us. This was the first time that I have ever fished my Tenkara rod lakeside. To my surprise, this method of fly fishing caught the greater number of fish out of anyone in our group. Come along on this adventure and enjoy backcountry vibes and fishing in one of the most beautiful landscapes in the world.

Clyde is one of my favorites! What length rod? I'm looking for a Tenkara rod to keep handy when I'm hiking and don't have time to pull out the fly rod.

      I was using a 12’ rod with a
about 15’ of combined line and leader. Many of the lakes in that area have trout right in shore and I always had plenty of reach. I definitely recommend having a tenkara rod on those backpacking trips, saves you on a little bit of space and hassle. Cheers!

@@FishikiFlyFishing Thanks, I was thinking 12-13'. I'm going to hike the Highline this summer and figured a Tenkara rod would be perfect as I'm passing all the small creeks and lakes.

Nice video! I'm from western Colorado and we have to look hard to match the fishing you have over there in Utah. Wife and I plan to take a couple weeks in July and head over to the Uintas. I've fished at the "university" - the Green...I'm not too good with those educated fish. haha . Tenkara is such a nice way to fish - you inspired me to try it on lakes - I've not even thought of using it there. Thanks for sharin!

Thanks for checking out my video! If you do your homework, you can definitely find some great water here in Utah. It took me years to find uneducated fish, once I started venturing off the beaten path the magic started to happen. When I first got into fly fishing, I spent most of my time on the bigger rivers combat fishing with the rest of Utah. Make sure you take your Tenkara rod to the Uintas when you go. From my experience, most of the fish that are caught from shore are within 15 feet of shore. Tight Lines!
