  • On this latest Manitoba Hot Bite video we venture onto the Red River in search of monster channel catfish.
The channel catfish fishery on this section of the Red River north of Lockport to its mouth at Lake Winnipeg is well documented as being world-class trophy waters. Cats are caught here daily with average sizes in the 32” to 35” range, or in other words consistently close to or surpassing the Master Angler minimum length of 34”. Anglers also have a better than average chance at any given time of hooking into behemoths well over 36“ in addition to a fair shot at eclipsing the 40” mark!
Visit redrivernorthtourism.com/ for more information about visiting this angling hotbed.

    I'm on my way.
With my Zebco 54 spincast reel spooled with 20lb monofilament on my heavy duty 5'6" pistol grip largemouth Bass rod, an ano 3600 filled with 5/0 and 7/0 circle hooks and some eco-friendly steel 1oz. bassworm weight my fish-finder rig.
Jus point me to the nearest store to buy some shrimp and nightcrawlers.
    And potato chips and coffee.

Haha, saw a few get landed with light tackle, not often tho. Sick how much gear is at the bottom of that river…

Also, what size circle hooks would you recommend for these master angler cats?

Can you get channel cats this big south of the lock and dam, like off the bank in Winnipeg? Is there a fish ladder at Lockport?

Anywhere in the river but any non idiot knows that most fish are gonna be stacking up at the locks. Yes there’s a ladder.
