There were plans in the US this year to release new $10 with a tactile feature, but I think that’s been pushed back due to COVID and problems with the federal reserve. Other countries like Australia have bulls of drastically different sizes and colors. The US only has green money and the only bill that I- a sighted person- can differentiate by touch alone from other bills are the current $100 due to the plastic strip embedded in them. I think if we switched to a plastic base for our money like Canada and most other countries do, we could do more for the visually impaired. Our money would also be more durable on top of it being easier to add tactile markers. I think currently the only thing US money has are the enlarged numbers of a different color on one corner of the bill, but that doesn’t help people who can’t see at all. There was a Supreme Court ruling in 2008 that required the government to make currency more accessible to the visually impaired which is where the big purple numbers on some bills came from, but that obviously isn’t much help. The reason there’s a plastic strip in $100 notes now is actually to prevent fraud but there is a notable difference in texture between the cotton bill and the anti-counterfeiting strip. Most people don’t carry around $100s, though. Most businesses won’t accept bills larger than $20, and I’ve never seen a $20 equipped with anything to significantly aid visually impaired people.

Found you through Emkay, love your content. Was wondering if you had a video about your blindness. My dad has been legally blind all his life so I've been his driver/eyes for a majority of mine. Restaurant menus are the bane of his existence and it sucks that there's no real easily accessible option however most local places around here have "to-go" menus, we have a glovebox filled with them we use for picking out what to eat and where beforehand. Also, I have no idea why he loves buffet restaurants so much but he'll just eat whatever so maybe it's some thrill seeking thing for him. Also his least favorite bill is the $50 even after the recent redesign. Also how many fingers am I hol-
Australia dollar bills have bumps on them so vision impaired people can know which one they are holding, 1 bump for 5 dollars, 2 bumps for 10 dollars, 3 bumps for 20 dollars, 4 bumps for 50 dollars, and 5 bumps for 100 dollars. Well the newer series does at least (not sure if new 100 one exists yet). Edit: I quant to mention that for my left eye the wire basically doesn’t exist, though for me wearing very specific glasses will help with the no wire for left eye thing, however when I’m not wearing glasses i basically don’t have any depth perception so I can’t point at something I want to point at and I can’t throw something where I want to throw it
Ma’am your hair is beautiful and I’m jealous. Also we have like the same hairstyle. I’m getting off track tho I love that your sharing your tricks! It’s great to know how you see enough to do what you do.
I am near sighted, and have worn glasses since I was TEN MONTHS OLD!! Apparently, since I was born prematurely, that gave me retinopathy of prematurity. A condition where the blood vessels in the eyes are developed abnormally. I also have astigmatism, light sensitivity, and near-sightedness. My eyes are horrible. Even with all that, I still forget to wear my glasses. Or properly clean my glasses.
My personal experience with being visually impaired! My vision isn't nearly as bad as Lexi's, but it is still not great. Your average book font becomes unreadable at about my arm length (so like 2.5 feet), which can cause problems. I cannot read car clocks or oven timers from any distance, and I have to be right on them to see, even with my current glasses (which bump it to like 4 feet). Second: I have an eye condition called nystagmus, which essentially is my eyes wanting to murder me. They shake uncontrollably and my brain autocorrects it by moving my eye to the bottom left corner of my vision. This not only makes it look like I'm staring at people, it also makes certain stuff HELL to see. I can't focus on Christmas lights in large amounts, because the separation confuses my eyes and they shake. Yo know those word search things you do in elementary? I had to be exempted from them because I'm that blind to them. It blends together. 3rd thing: the dark. I can't see worth shit in the dark! I hate night lights for this exact reason, as they just make the room scary. Instead, I keep A fan on in my bedroom, close to the center so I can use the noise it makes to navigate! Also I can't to the drunk driving test with following stuff with my eyes because of reason 2.
i have astigmatism and -8 near sight and many things are SOOO relatable, i can't even see the letters on the TV my family uses because it's too far from the couch for me! even with glasses! and i knock my glasses down from the table a little too often because i absolutely can't see sh/t without them! sometimes i take them off and i'm so dissapointed, but i don't see much better without them in terms of 100% sight tbh and i can't find my phone if i set it down on the table in the hall because it's always dark for me, and my phone case is black!
One trend I DESPISE on packaging is the whole pastel on pastel color scheme with no dark outline of the words so I have NO CLUE if this is a bottle of shampoo, condotioner, face wash, or moisturizer. So I avoid purchasing those types of itwms but if I get them as free samples then I jist pass them along to someine else who can get stressed out by them.
for those who don't know (google def): Bilateral optic neuropathy (the thing Lexi has) is a catch-all term that refers to damage inflicted on the optic nerve in your eye. This is the nerve in the back of the eyeball that transfers visual information from your eye to the brain, allowing you to see. This condition is one that gets worse over time, when not treated.
Correct, this video is a bit old and I’ve since gotten genetic confirmation of ADOA+. No treatment is available but I’m on the list to at least be considered for some experimental mitochondrial drug trials.
Also rip surprise spicy attacks, I also get caught out by even tiny amounts of spice, especially when given the “it’s not that spicy” from people who regularly do the hard spicy 🥵
I'm legally blind in my right eye due to childhood cancer and I have many little tidbits about living with one legally blind eye and even some stories. I'll just list them off. 1.) I accidentally bump into people semi-regularly due to them coming from my right side 2.) I've recently started letting teachers know about my blind eye and I've requested that they try to approach me from the left if they can because I've had many people accidentally jumpscare me by coming in on my right where I can't see them. 3.) My little brother (currently 7 years old) had found out about me being blind in my right eye a while ago and sometimes he'll use that to scare me. 4.) Sometimes I forget that a lot of other people can see out of both eyes 5.) I remember once when I was about to do marching band I was put towards the left side of the arrangement (We were marching for a parade so everyone stayed in the same positions). This is a problem because I obviously can't see shit to the right of me. I tried to ask the band director to please move me to the right of the arrangement so I can actually see where I am relative to everyone else. For some reason he just refused and I kinda just had to suck it up. I eventually figured it out but it was way tougher than it needed to me. 5.) I was performing in a musical at my high school and there's one section of a song where you dance with a partner. It could be pretty difficult at times to get to the right spot due to not being able to see to the right without turning my head and shit. At one point, my dance partner started getting really frustrated with me struggling to properly position myself and eventually I just started bawling. Luckily one of my favorite teachers was there to help me and talk to my dance partner. 6.) During marching band, a guy in my section asked about my eye. I can see why because its pointing away from my other eye. Now long-story-short the cancer fucked my vision in that eye so after a while my eye started drift off. I accidentally blurted out "Oh, you can thank the cancer for it!" and he had this dumbfounded and shocked facial expression. 2 years after that we actually started getting to know each other and er became friends. I'm pretty sure that he was autistic and (might, I can't remember if he does or not) have ADHD just like me. It was pretty neat finding someone like me! Plus we also have a mutual love for video games and he's even trying to make his own! So my accidental cancer joke may have been part of what started up a friendship!
something that helped me a lot (since I can't se out of both eyes) was treating my vision as an optional sense - I identify most people by their walk patterns, the sound of their clothing, etc. I also learned a very, very little bit of echolocation using my right hand to make a slight flicking sound that can be helpful for walls, but that's more for quieter areas. I did marching band but goodness if they didn't let me turn my head at a 30-odd degree angle every few seconds just to check if we were going yet I'd have quit, lol, ain't got the patience for that
Legally blind things i found out when i worked with a blind person: Doors are either completely open or completely closed! Any half open door or cupboard is attempted murder! Legally blind thing i ALSO had to remember (even if it's entirely obvious): A blind person has trouble seeing, not hearing, so if you try to communicate with them, make sure to say who you are if you don't know them very well, and you don't have to shout... For some strange reason, many people we encountered, started talking really loudly when they were talking to him, and we had to explain to them it was their eyes, not their ears, that was the problem!
It's ne again! Yes, as always, very late to the party! But, thus was very informative!! Sincerely, ty for doing this video bc I honestly had no idea what legally blind really meant. Much appreciated, cuz now I understand a bit more!! Thanks again!💕 Had to edit bc I forgot something!! Love that you refer to your SO as the Lexi Wife!!! How sweet!! What a lovely way to mention her without too much attention since I've heard you explain she isn't in to that stuff like being on camera or whatever!! Very cool!! Keep up all the great work babe!! 💕
I see (hehe get it) your struggles- I have a heck ton of stuff wrong with my vision- It's blurry so I need glasses- It's 10% darker than normal people's vision And I have conversion disorder that makes me go blind( and alot more stuff) for many hours if I see flashing lights, see bright lights, hear loud noises, see fast moving objects, or just have a ton of anxiety- I could have said I had a disorder that makes me go blind but hey- I have to get all the info in! Stay safe, ily :]
Myopic astigmatism here and I'm on -7 and -6 lenses currently. I was predicted to be completely blind by 2019 and yet somehow my mother is still shocked by the fact that I cant see my own hands without my glasses
Having bad eyesight SUCKS,I'm farsighted (I can see things from far away but not much when things are up close) and have needed glasses forever and it isn't fun...my eyesight has been getting a little worse lately

I know this is old but I loved this, I'm losing my eyesight but I'm not quite legally blind yet but it made me happy to hear you describe the exact way I handle fast food restaurants haha
my vision isn't that great, but i can still see. i was born blind due to the lenses having fallen over in both eyes. i could see out of a TINY corner of my eyes so i tried to look out of that and made myself sick a lot because of it. i didn't have vision until the age of 2 after having multiple surgeries. i have had 9 surgeries so far and will eventually have another.
My Mom went totally blind at the age of 28, married my Dad at 29, and I showed up when she was 30. She lost her sight due to a retinal detachment in one eye, and glaucoma in the other. I learned many things from watching her, like how to maneuver around places, and how to keep track of cash. Put your money in order from smallest bill to largest, and group them together with paper clips (the paper clips part is my idea). I have vision issues as well. I'm at high risk for glaucoma (family history), and retinal detachment (I'm so near sighted I have stretch marks on my retinas, and I've seen this on imaging). I have come very close to maxing out the machine used to help determine the strength of your glasses. Uncorrected my vision is 20/750 in my good eye, and 20/1000 in my bad eye. The fact that I still have my vision is a gift that I don't take for granted. Keep up the good work, you have pretty eyes, and when you call the dog and she doesn't respond consider it a game of hide-n-seek 🤭
I have glaucoma and permanet optic nerve damage from it. Sometimes it's like look I g through a fog. Anyways imma shamless attention w so I have no problem in a place with overhrad menus asking for a paper copy of their menu so I can hold it up to my face with my comically large reading glasses that STILL AREN'T STEONG ENOUGH. Also when typing ibe learned to jiat ignore spelling mistakes. My autocorrect has my back..most of the time. I also shuffle my feet when walking because lumps and bumps on the ground and i have vertigo plus i have a tendamcy to look ahead when I walk, not down. Darn you perfect posture!!
I am legally blind too but it's from coloboma and I was born with it so I know the struggle I use a blind cane to get around in public. And yes it it a pain 💗💗💗 love your Lexi reviews.
my glasses can correct my vision to normal, but it seems like my vision without glasses is about as bad as yours with. One time I forgot to pack extra contacts or my glasses, and omg the gray objects on gray days are murderous
I wear glasses but I’m not severely visually impaired. Thankfully, my vision issues are correctable with glasses. That said, I ALSO have a black dog who likes to lay on dark colored clothes and furniture and becomes effectively invisible. My dog is also visually impaired due to severe cataracts and she’s extremely hard of hearing so calling her doesn’t even work something. I have to go around nudging every dark colored cushion or pile of laundry to make sure she’s not in it when I go looking for her. Sometimes in the middle of the night I’ll get up to use the bathroom and she’ll follow me. I won’t realize it and I’ll end up locking her out of my room for the night because I lost her in the dark hallway and she couldn’t hear me calling her to come back to bed.

Edit: I quant to mention that for my left eye the wire basically doesn’t exist, though for me wearing very specific glasses will help with the no wire for left eye thing, however when I’m not wearing glasses i basically don’t have any depth perception so I can’t point at something I want to point at and I can’t throw something where I want to throw it
9:24 thank you for looking out for me. Much appreciated.
Ma’am your hair is beautiful and I’m jealous. Also we have like the same hairstyle. I’m getting off track tho I love that your sharing your tricks! It’s great to know how you see enough to do what you do.
Google generated o7 while you were talking about the crisps lmao
Freya!! Cute pupper!! You are right though, she is laughing at you. Plus side she loves you and is amused by her Lexi mommy
As someone whose eyesight is so bad he can't see more than 2" from his face without his glasses, I can relate to so many of these.
#1 This was REALLY cool!
what happens if you put two glasses on top of one another does your vision get worse, better or is it still the same
Worse, since the lenses are no longer what your eyes need to focus~
you can have the best glasses in the world, but if your optic nerve is damaged, it won't matter.

Also I can't to the drunk driving test with following stuff with my eyes because of reason 2.
i have astigmatism and -8 near sight and many things are SOOO relatable, i can't even see the letters on the TV my family uses because it's too far from the couch for me! even with glasses! and i knock my glasses down from the table a little too often because i absolutely can't see sh/t without them!
sometimes i take them off and i'm so dissapointed, but i don't see much better without them in terms of 100% sight tbh
and i can't find my phone if i set it down on the table in the hall because it's always dark for me, and my phone case is black!
i use shapes to figure what things are without my glasses :< i also have superior hearing XD best part of having bad vision haha
I never realized you were legally blind until now! Still love your content.
for those who don't know (google def):
Bilateral optic neuropathy (the thing Lexi has) is a catch-all term that refers to damage inflicted on the optic nerve in your eye.
1.) I accidentally bump into people semi-regularly due to them coming from my right side
2.) I've recently started letting teachers know about my blind eye and I've requested that they try to approach me from the left if they can because I've had many people accidentally jumpscare me by coming in on my right where I can't see them.
3.) My little brother (currently 7 years old) had found out about me being blind in my right eye a while ago and sometimes he'll use that to scare me.
4.) Sometimes I forget that a lot of other people can see out of both eyes
5.) I remember once when I was about to do marching band I was put towards the left side of the arrangement (We were marching for a parade so everyone stayed in the same positions).
I did marching band but goodness if they didn't let me turn my head at a 30-odd degree angle every few seconds just to check if we were going yet I'd have quit, lol, ain't got the patience for that
I'm so s͙o͙r͙r͙y͙, L͎e͎x͎i͎
For what? haha

Thanks again!💕
Had to edit bc I forgot something!! Love that you refer to your SO as the Lexi Wife!!! How sweet!! What a lovely way to mention her without too much attention since I've heard you explain she isn't in to that stuff like being on camera or whatever!! Very cool!! Keep up all the great work babe!! 💕

I love your videos! And this is really cool
Aw thanks! Glad you liked! 💕
I see (hehe get it) your struggles-
I have a heck ton of stuff wrong with my vision-
It's blurry so I need glasses-
It's 10% darker than normal people's vision
And I have conversion disorder that makes me go blind( and alot more stuff) for many hours if I see flashing lights, see bright lights, hear loud noises, see fast moving objects, or just have a ton of anxiety-
I could have said I had a disorder that makes me go blind but hey- I have to get all the info in!
Stay safe, ily :]

For counting bills you can mostly tell how small it is because 1s are more likely to get crumpled and washed and stuff. You can also fold them at the bank in different ways to tell them apart
Well this is useful for those of us trying to make sites accessible. WCAG has great guidance, but it's treally nice to learn about real life contexts... and workarounds.
In Australia we have plastic notes or bills and there is Braille numbers on it for the legally blind
I'm legally blind in one eye and my therapist is legally blind! She uses a white cane and despite it not being regular therapy, that's one of the things we talk about. She bought one that's too short and might teach me how it works since she also works for the Coalition For The Blind

my vision isn't that great, but i can still see. i was born blind due to the lenses having fallen over in both eyes. i could see out of a TINY corner of my eyes so i tried to look out of that and made myself sick a lot because of it. i didn't have vision until the age of 2 after having multiple surgeries. i have had 9 surgeries so far and will eventually have another.
LEXI I LOVE YOUR HAIR SO MUCH!!!!
OMG your hair is so goddamn cuteeeee :3

I keep all my time in my glasses
my glasses can correct my vision to normal, but it seems like my vision without glasses is about as bad as yours with. One time I forgot to pack extra contacts or my glasses, and omg the gray objects on gray days are murderous
HI I’M LEGALLY BLIND TOO AND I USE COLOR SCHEME AS WELL WHEN I DON’T WEAR MY GLASSES
I'm not legally blind, but I can't see things far away very well. So that part about overhead menus, I have that same issue.
yeaaaa they kinda suck.
Hey Lexi I have some thing called nystagmus and it stinks it’s basically where my eyes shake so much I can barely see and I have some thing called amblyopia which means that I am technically blind out of my right eye And you are so inspiring
