- Windows and Linux are two very different operating systems. I know when I switched from Windows to Linux, there was an adjustment period due to some of the jarring differences. But I quickly grew to appreciate how Linux does things and how, in most aspects, it's just a superior operating system when compared to Windows.

GNU/Linux is probably one of the best things that happened in modern times
It should also be stressed how much easier Linux is on the hardware. You need less RAM, less CPU power, less drive space, etc, etc, which gives you more resource overhead. Try Linux on a PC, that is struggling with Win10 and you'll be blown away how much life is still in that system.
I’m actually about to try switching to my old pc as my daily with manjaro so I don’t have to worry about losing or breaking anything just yet. I’m really hoping I can switch to Linux on my main pc too.

I remember being blown away by this when I switched from Vista to Ubuntu 6.06 for a month or two way back in the day. I can only imagine the difference has become even more clear over time, with each new version of Windows becoming more and more of a resource hog. I'd love to switch back to Linux now for that very reason.

Most people don't know the spiritual benefits to feeling true freedom. It grows you and makes you a more real person. Leaving windows is like leaving an abusive relationship. It isn't easy, but it's absolutely worthwhile.

@@madalin_426 Total control over your own property. You are 100% in charge of what your computer does, nobody else is. I would often feel like a slave whenever microsoft would force me to update my system. I know that regular updates are wise (I do that on my linux system) but the fact that I was forced to do them really rankled me in a deep way.
On my linux system, I choose what I do and the opinions, right or wrong, of anyone else are totally irrelevant. They choose only what software they provide, and if I don't like some decision they make, I am free to put in the work to change it on my own system. The code I install has the total "death of the author", as I can install programs written by people who hate me, and as long as the code is clean, they can't use that to hurt me. They are not my slaves, and I am not their slave.
True ownership of my own computer is awesome, because I am the final arbiter of everything that happens, limited only by my own willingness to put in the work to understand things.

One reason that made me switch to Linux a couple of years ago is that in Linux I feel at home, while in Win (and Mac) I feel a little like a guest in someone's else home.

To be honest. I'm forced to use Windows because Profesional grade CAD Software only works on Windows or works the best on Windows. A lot of people are forced to use an OS they don't like because of industry standards.

Interestingly enough, these days I discovered Solvespace CAD software which is working on Linux too, and it's free. It hasn't been updated for about 5 years, then I see they released the version 3 few months ago.

Windows doesn't force users to create a Microsoft account. They force users to *BUY* a licence key to activate Windows. They still collect user data and force users to login into Microsoft account to use the Microsoft store.
I hope that part was somewhat sarcastic, because displaying such a level of ignorance on Windows is not really helping driving the point home...

You don't need a Microsoft account to activate your installation. I'm not siding with MS or Windows on this, but the two are not the same. Activation doesn't send any personal information about you to MS.

Er... what? I clearly remember having to give permission to transmit "basic data" in order to even get Windows installed? Also I haven't managed to install it without activating it, and activating requires a key, and you obtain a key by buying a Windows license, and in order to buy the license you have to give them details. Maybe this is different when stuff is pre-installed on your machine (I haven't bought new hw with OEM installed Windows in almost a decade) but in other scenarios it does try to get your details one way or another. It also loves to automatically link your -hotmail- outlook for some reason.
With Windows 11 you no longer have the option to work with a local account.

Great video! I came from Windows and now fully moved over to Fedora. I completely agree with you, the more I use Linux, the more I realize the differences between Windows and Linux.

@@arkvsi8142 they use different desktop environments out of the box. I can't remember if Manjaro uses btrfs but if not then Fedora uses btrfs stock. Both have great hardware support. I do like pacman and aur with arch based which is a plus. Fedora is stable release cycle while arch is rolling.

i already said it, and i will say it again.
people dont want to do stuff with their computer, they want to use their computer to do stuff.
what i mean is, most people dont care about customization (do with their computer) they do care about using the computer to do something (eg: drawing, editing videos, making music, making games, playing games etc)
and windows gives then more options to do those things.
i remember that i wanted to make games on linux, and didnt had an single good tool to do it, while on windows i had tons of options.
now i ask: what is the point in bein able to customize the look and feel of the desktop, if you cant use it to make what you want?
i didnt wanted to give up on linux because i wanted to have "freedom™" but i was not realizing that i was able to do less on my computer by using linux.
customization is cool and all, but in the end of the day, its not that important, while all the tools that people need to do what they want are windows exclusive, some times there are alternatives for then, but people will have to relearn how to use everything, then it dont matter if they cant customize the desktop on windows, they will use it anyway and feel that they have more freedom on it.
and no, windows is not using then so long they can "control" their computer enough to do what they want, it dont matter if windows has an second agenda on the background.
tiling windows manager can improve your productivity, but not as much as an tool dedicated to do what you want.
try to make an 3D model without blender , using only gedit and you will figure out how messed up this idea is, an tiling window manager or theme customization wont help you, when what you need an game engine and motion capture solution or anything like that.
as for the other arguments:
the new generation dont even know what an blue screen is, they never saw one and never will because windows is not as instable as it used to be.
i used windows 8 for more than 1 year, and i can count on my fingers how many times windows crashed on me: 3.
and since the cause was the same i was able to figure out what was causing it:
login on skype on both the computer and my tablet, connect both via usb, and receive an call on skype, i think there was an bug in the protocol to tranfer the call from the tablet to the pc or something, in any case, both crashed at this time, so i count each as one crash for windows and one for linux (android), in total 3 crashes for each.
other than that windows is quite stable nowadays so using stability as an argument in favor of using linux on a desktop makes no sense.
as for security, i know a bunch of people who do internet banking on their pirated copy of windows with tons of pirate games, if they never had an issue with viruses stealing their money, then i dont see why the average joe would care.
as for the / and \ argument, it makes no difference, and most people dont notice such small detail on their file system, because they dont use to type stuff.
as for the case insensitive file system, it makes more sense for the end user, end users dont want have to memorize if their "documents" folder starts with an D or d, it make 0 difference for then, an system that cant find an file because its case sensitive is less intuitive than one who can.
commands? as an programer i know how usefull they are, but the end user dont and you're just talking an alien language at this point.
now, all that said, looks like i finally will be able to completely get ride of the need of using windows for something.
i finally found an good game engine that works on linux and happens to be open source (godot) a few years ago, and finally found an facial mocap solution that i still need to test, but seem to work fine, and the games shall come as soon as valve launch steam deck with steamOS 3.0 and their brand new version of proton.

I do have to say, using FOSS software and Linux in general feels like I'm at home, and like, FOSS software is easier to use, in my opinion. I've never been truly happier to have switched to GNU+Linux!
I miss when Windows was very customizable like XP and 7. Now MS tried so hard to heavily limit customizability.

@@paulvorderegger1522 Yeah, but there is no official way to change the system font "Segoe UI" to something different. You have to edit the registry. And you cannot load a complete icon pack. You have to change every single item.
And there is no way to change the complete system theme without a (registry) hack, e.g., like you were able to choose from classic or "modern" style in WinXP.

Activating windows doesn’t require creating a Microsoft account! You need to purchase Windows product key from Microsoft (or 3rd party sellers) in order to activate
If you set up a windows pc without internet connection, it won't force you to make a windows account, and it won't download any Spyware either, you can set it up after windows is installed with no problems

@randy s No it doesn't you log in account and Windows activation are different, so much that you can even give the PC to someone else and Windows 10 will still be activated for that computer even on re-install.
@randy s maybe on S but certainly not on Home (I have it and activated it without making an account)... besides, you can always deny them any personal data by just making a new account when offered the choice, so the notion that Microsoft requires you to hand over your data is false for any Windowa version and edition, even for Windows 11, and DT should avoid lying about this if he values his credibility (there's plenty other reasons to dislike Microsoft and Windows)

Hey Derek!!! Awesome video. I finally bit the bullet and switched over to Endeavor OS running Cinnamon. Love it so far and I am not a Linux noob by any stretch. I consider myself intermediate. I will have to figure out alternative Linux based programs compared to Windows.

@@ztech-consulting I've been distro hopping over ten years now. Started with ubuntu, didn't even last two weeks when I found arch. Installed following the wiki and haven't looked back! Today I run Arco on my work station and fedora on my servers. Can't beat the aur. Fedora only has to run docker containers.

And at some point that maliciousness has pushed them to the point of even turning down a piece of software because it doesn’t align with their core beliefs. Some call this being a zealot, others call it a martyr. But to say that Linux doesn’t align with a certain ideology is generally a false statement.
Linux is a mentality, but at the end of the day it is a tool. Windows is the same thing, a tool. He dislikes his tool because it doesn't perform like the other tool he owns. SMH!

When your distro is your entire personality… what a life
I have been using manjaro for over 2 years now, the longest used distro by me after Linux mint. and I must say it is pretty stable distribution, and by stable I mean it has been so reliable for me that I even got bored that I didn't get any issues and distro hopped for 1-2 days and then back to manjaro. A good example here and a great t-shirt btw.

@@SFSAtlas I moved from mainly Linux to mainly Windows a this moment. I still dual-boot and pop in some time to run an update. I haven’t been feeling as free on pc for a while when I can just don’t worry about stuff working. This is not a shot at linux at all and I still keep an eye on linux community, hence I’m here.

Although i'm a linux fan, i think some of these problems you note about windows are not reasonable. Using backslash or not being case sensitive are just characteristics of windows and it's users are used to it.

Good video! I've been running Linux for about 17-18 years now (not always exclusively without a Windows system hanging around, but I am currently free of Windows) and I like seeing videos like this that bring up both Windows and Linux and do side-by-side comparisons. It's kind like looking at a snapshot of where the two systems stand as of the date of the video and everyone who does these types of videos always seem to point out different things and it's just good to see the knowledge spreading. :)

The fact that you think that you need Microsoft Account to customize your desktop show me how little knowledge you have over Windows. Like as a Windows user how do I trust someone that doesn't even get the basics right? I love Linux but I use Windows cuz it ... JUST WORKS. Any program, any game, anything is 3 clicks away. On Linux that's not possible. I need to mess 3 hours with Wine or Proton so games work and app integration is a TOTAL MESS. On Windows 10 most stuff integrate very well with the desktop (right-click gets new stuff when you install apps, etc...).

This type of discussion is only proof of why Linux users prove to be more about “being holier than thou” rather than people with genuine concern for windows users…. Someone had issues with something and a Buffon came around only to say “oh well it’s easy for me” with no added advice, no help, nothing…. Just a Dick measuring contest for himself lol.
Oh yeah let’s not forget all the other shit you had to download to get games to work in the first place lmao…. The main thing windows users desire is compatibility and of course usability…. Windows users if it was their first OS they ever used are going to be in a completely alien world when they try Linux and then will realize why windows became popular in the first place…. Windows really just works out of the box for the most part…. A windows user will be entirely new to things like distros and will have a massive learning curve ahead of them, and to boot, windows also has very nice tools Linux simply doesn’t have which furthers the point that windows is just simply more compatible, and compatibility is THE MOST IMPORTANT thing for your avg PC user…. Customizable task bar? Doesn’t matter nearly as much as being able to play a brand new game with your friends online.
“But the spyware”
Windows is very much a horrible OS when it comes to user rights and privacy and it shouldn’t be ignored which is why Linux users are always splurging on this idea however unless you are doing some incredibly shady stuff the average person will literally not care…. And even if they did care, you still have to answer the issue of spyware at the hardware level (the intel IME and the AMD equivalent which I can’t remember right now)… which can be answered but the time required to actually “solve” this issue is not worth it for your average windows user so they will simply say that you can’t escape the spyware game without putting in too much effort they will never put in themselves. All in all even on the spyware argument you will have try a bit harder to convince them to switch to Linux. Of course another little joke is windows can still use adblockers so it doesn’t really matter too much when arguing over the ad issue. So then what argument can ever be made to convince your avg windows user to switch? With steam providing some game support to Linux in the future a case can be made that windows compatibility won’t be in the lead forever in the game department so that’s good but that’s in the future and there’s no telling how universal that support will be.
All in all what good argument is there for a windows user who knows nothing about Linux to switch to Linux? Not much cause a windows user simply wants different things than a Linux user…. Mind you I will say it now that Linux is the better system than windows but the differences that define this “superiority” will almost always be in the realm the avg person doesn’t care for… to put it simply, Linux users were never going to understand windows users. Now as for those people who switched from windows to Linux…. You weren’t a windows users you were a Linux user that discovered you were one when you touched Linux.
I fully support EVERYONE switching to Linux but until people like this troglodyte learn that Dick measuring isn’t a valid way of proving Linux superiority then never expect Linux to ever take off into the public mainstream.
1:10 Untrue , you can get a copy from Microsoft's website , install windows 10 (just make sure to click off the 10 S option) without comnecting to the internet , and there you can use a local account and go on with your life, and connect after the install is complete, and completely for free (just gratis , as windows will never be libre)

Gotta say DT you converted me a looooong time ago. The only reason I am still hanging on to any type (right now one laptop) of WIN OS is because of my child's school district sites and because I cannot get Lutris, Play Linux or Wine to work correctly :). Keep spreading the word !
edit: After reading my crappy explanation: I only have one remaining computer in the house that does not run on some form of Linux, a laptop. and it is only for the above reasons.
I think true freedom is doing what you want, even if that means using propietary software or whatever, the FSF version of freedom (to which DT complies) is Stallman's version of freedom, not mine

@1edwmh Being free of Microsoft Windoze to me means I have a secure operating system that is also much faster than Windoze ever will be. Using a compatibility layer is still free from Microsoft treating my computer like it is theirs!!!

There is plenty of community feedback out there saying otherwise, I just think I lack the know how or direction. Do you have any alternatives? TY for the feedback.
You know, I love Linux, but as someone who's first computer ran DOS 5.0 I have been exposed to such a huge variety of OS choices. Whether it was Win3.11 for workgroups, OS2/Warp, IBM AS400, FreeBSD, Win2K Enterprise, Novel NetWare, etc, etc... An operating system is nothing more then a tool to get something done.
The right tool for the job isn't always going to be Linux. Your entire argument regarding privacy is understandable, but you need to give up information to just about anyone for anything anymore.
Here is a challenge for you..Find commercial grade, open source, Linux compatible X-Ray Imaging software. Then maybe I can get my local dentist to drop Windows...Oh wait that would also require a medical office management software that also legally complied with patient confidentiality and security standards. See what a mean...an operating system is only a tool to accomplish the task required.
Personally, I see the future of operating system as a world where Linux is used as a daily driver, Free or Open BSD for Servers and more professional work like medical industry as you mentioned will be using windows. Windows or Mac will not go away but they will be slowly phased out by general consumers.

@@lingux_yt it literally is just that...just an email address. My hotmail address is used for one thing and one thing only MS registration. I do not use it as a daily email. I only check on it once a year to keep the address active. It tracks back to just MS products, nothing else. Search engines and email storage costs money, and I am very well aware of that and know what value I am both giving and getting from using Google services.

Basic users don't care either one they use, people with decent knowledge of tech stuff are the one who will say that Linux distros are complicated.
Try seeing things from the latter's perspectives and Linux will be more popular.

Despite the tug of war tensions like this between operating systems, in my opinion it doesn't really matter as long as each is not meddling with the other. (Which unfortunately, is not the case. Microsoft just can't calm its greedy hands off non-profitable conventional means.)
But I think the smart and most sensible way to go on about is to just use BOTH, that is if necessary (and for me it certainly is). Or just stick to Windows for non-savvy or people who just want technical support ready than just figuring it out themselves. However, I must stress it more how I hate Microsoft. As this method has been getting more and more difficult (with the release of Windows 11).
I want to defend Windows despite a Linux user myself, but their stench just gets getting fouler and fouler that its getting harder to breathe. I respect Windows and just want peace between the two.
I agree with you. I use Manjaro XFCE but I have an install of Win 10 for a lot of software not available on Linux (mostly gaming related). I do, however, use Office 365 online because I don't like any Linux alternatives.

There's a funny thing about the filenames in Windows : they actually are case-sensitive but Microsoft locks it down in the UI. NTFS is capable of storing two filenames with the same name but a different case.
I have written to a NTFS volume with Linux. Yes, it is true that NTFS can handle upper and lower case, just like ext3.
When you open the NTFS volume under Windows, it can read each file as a separate file.
If you need to use it just use it.
If linux, bsd, windows, or mac works for you then use it.
I personally game and livestream on windows but prefer to do programming work and other experimental things on my manjaro install on my laptop.
No tux no bux guys are stuck in their ways, mostly because they've used linux for so long they literally aged to a point where accepting change is hard(middle aged-ish).

Ironically, it seems as though MS really began to take advantage of the internet and various tech to ease in to mining their customers, right around Y2K. I began to learn more about Linux and when I was comfortable with it, began using it as a desktop win-killer and have never regretted it . People have the freedom to choose Windows OS's but are really just hamstringing themselves to limitation that they accept as the norm. It has never taken less effort to delve in to the world of Linux than now. Its the same process as Windows: download an ISO, burn it to a thumb-drive, boot into the ISO, and use it with ease (depending on your window manager). Piece of cake and no hamstringing to build you desktop exactly the way you want it! Thanks again as always and peace!
It was the smallest thing that made me switch from Windows to GNU/Linux: I used Winaero to remove OneDrive from the folder pane from the file dialogue box. I just wanted it gone. Didn't use it, didn't want it. Next Windows update? It's back. Then began a game of whackamole where I was running Winaero just to get rid of that damned OneDrive link every time Windows updated.
One day had enough and nuked from orbit. Installed GNU/Linux and have been happy since.

BSoD also helps the switch, nearly 5 months of Manjaro XFCE and not a single problem, really good experience as a completely new GNU/Linux user.
I had so many issue with 10 that what issues I had with linux paled in the end. Wasn't an easy move at all for me. But worth it :-)
I am no techie, so was a challange to follow the instructions when things went wrong. Many hours of frustration and trying to find it on Google. Now that I've gotten a handle on it to installing things not in the repositories and knowing the basics. I at least feel like I've found my footing.
10 got so bad that instead of every 9 months or so having reinstall windows of the older versions I've used in the past, as it was becoming an issue. It was quicker and easier to just back up the files you wanted, wipe it clean and start again. But, once I got 10, it was eventually reduced to nearly every 3 months! I don't have time to spend nearly 2 days or more depending on the speed of the internet. I also fell victim of their first round of deleting your files without permission. That kind of was the last straw. After I switched, if I remember correctly people where it with that about 3 or 4 more times in 2 years. So glad I got away from that.
@@iodreamify I'm still looking for a viable WYSIWYG web editor in the same neighbourhood as Dreamweaver but outside of that it was fairly easy. That said, I don't play video games and my software needs are pretty easy to fulfill these days.

First of all, the fact they force you to activate windows before customization is to make you buy their product, the fact you have to give them personal info is like an "extra thing". Second, the no case sensitive files is intended for an easy to use approach, they expect the end user to be a "give me all baked" user. 6 months into arch with awesome, love it and love your channel dt

8:03 Bash is good for shelscripting, but in my opinion it's bad for normal using. I use bash to shellscripting and csh/tcsh as my user's shell.
Quick note for anyone constantly reinstalling or using unactivated windows in VMs: A bit of a faff but all locked out customisations in Windows can be set in regedit without requiring activation. Activation just unlocks the GUI settings controls (for some reason). Google for the setting registry key name you want to change.
I use a .reg file to set everything up at once if I need to start a new Windows install (even if it's activated). Actually I use a .ps1 that calls the .reg as it sets up network shares, pulls in other files, backgrounds etc from network locations before it applies the .reg

id love to continue exclusively using linux but gaming is very restricted on linux with anti cheats not allowing multiplayer is lots of popular games. I even tried gpu passthrough but ran into many poorly documented errors. linux for personal use, windows for gaming
Hopefully a lot of the issues with the games are going to be solved as Steam gets ready to launch the steam deck. They said they were talking to the companies who make the anti-cheat. Also said there was a major improvement coming for proton too :-) Things are improving. In the last few years by quite a bit. I'm not a techie but not clueless either. I at least know where to put my pc on and that a cd Drive (for those that still have such a thing) is not a coffee cup holder. And I'd say in the last 3 years it has become more user friendly for those of us who are not in the IT department. It still has a little way to go for the clueless. But even that is getting better day by day. And if you need to asking Uncle Google helps alot :-) That is still one of the down sides. No one in retail in general knows what to do with people needing help with Linux. They only know how to do windows or if you are lucky a mac.
depends on the game, I guess, something like the iconic Old School RuneScape or Counter-Strike 1.6 works, and so much more games I think. Online Chess as well, experiencing rise just like Desktop Linux :D
A few of these are only differences, with Windows not being truly inferior.
For example: the backslash. You can use forward slash too (at least in the modern windowses. Maybe in Windows 95 it wouldn't've worked)
The case insensitive files.... that might actually by a bonus for a normie user.
Lastly, the activation in order to customize... that's understandable. Activating is only using a key, no names required. And since it's not free (for now) it makes sense to have some kind of locked features. And visual customization have 0 impact on actual important things, like drivers and applications. It's not awesome, but I cannot truly fault them for that.
as you know im sure i was a linux user, one day i had to install windows to figure out something for someone, ever since that day i been using windows. i still have the drive with linux but i just couldn't bring myself to go back. windows has been working great plus i get to use software i couldn't with linux. and no more fixing this and that really save me time.
Give Mx linux a chance, once you fix what you want to fix, respin your os with mx snapshot, and you will have a copy of your os which will never need to fix when you make a new install in a any device.
@1edwmh that's your choice, i have hated linux for a long time and used windows for 20 years, but my understanding has changed in last 3 years, what i know feel is linux is truely unique and may not be superior, in certain things, but with right knowledge and patience i have come to love it.
Yes, Linux has some benefits but I can't use the software I need to work like Autodesk, Adobe, and CSI software like sap2000 or ETABS, Global Mapper and such, I've try Linux alternatives but they are not as powerful as those tools

I use both, Linux and windows, Linux for work and windows for home or gaming, but I don't get at all when you say windows is unstable ... What do you mean windows is unstable ? I never have had "stability" issues on windows or Linux ... Whatever that means.... both systems are really stable
Really a nice video explaining the limitations and compromises that we have to make while using Windows versus the freedom that Linux gives. I am just annoyed with one flavor of Linux that I suspect w.r.t. privacy and that's Deepin, I installed it as VM to try. The EULA and Privacy Policy I didn't like leaving that I am a big fan of Linux ,its a shame that we are getting such distros in Linux as well. I will strongly discourage using Deepin, they also have their own default internet browser. Its a shame else there are so many distros and flavors thats the beauty of Linux you can choose what you want.
Hey dt, just a quick suggestion. With all the new SteamDeck thing going on many people, myself included are searching for an excuse to ditch windows as our main OS for games and move to any Linux distro, it would be helpful if you made a video talking about Lutris and Proton and how to setup those on a distro of choice for people like myself. :)

5:18 I've gotten used to using forward slashes a long time ago after being on Linux for a while but I used to think it was strange after having used DOS and Windows for most of my life prior to switching. I think most people probably think the forward slash is the more strange separator since Windows is the more common desktop OS. But then most users in general aren't really aware of anything other than the file icons in the explorer window.
I used Windows for a long time and i thought back slashes were weird before i even knew about GNU/Linux.

One of the things I love about Linux is that like you can say it can actually be more user friendly than Windows. Take something like Lubuntu which is also crazy forgiving of old hardware. I've heard of grandparents using it without having any idea what Linux even is.

This video is unfair and misleading. I do believe that Microsoft collects a lot of user data and have made their business around since a last few years but this video has many misleading facts.
You don't need a Microsoft account to activate windows. Activation refers to paying for Windows which makes sense because Windows is a paid operating system.
After activating Windows you can customize Windows and unlock what you paid for without a Microsoft account but they don't "force you" (2:19) to create one. Windows probably still send a lot of data to Microsoft but Its anonymous and I won't mind if Linux collects such anonymous data for improvement.
The driver situation in Windows has got so much better in Windows that you can't understand it without actually using it. All the drivers update through Windows update section and it's so much more convenient. I hope manufacturers cooperate and bring such features to Linux.
I have a Razer Blade 15 Advance 2019 and have face just 2-5 crashes in Windows in 2 Years and 1-3 crashes (does not boot after updates) in Linux in 1 year.
I'm not saying Windows is more stable than Linux but the user experience regarding Crash has improved a lot. Almost no crashes in both.
Animations and UI is much better and smoother than on any operating system (except MacOS). More user friendly and welcoming than any Linux distro.
I'm just this video is unfair and misleading.
I agree more users should switch to open-source ecosystems (OS , software and protocols) but this doesn't mean that Windows has bought nothing to the table and has not driven innovation. It would have been nicer if that innovation was open-source. Sometimes money is a motive for companies as well.

I've found Linux for the most part, just works on my computers without crashing. One exception is one of my HP computers which I use an aftermarket video card in. if I leave it on too long, the sound coming through the HDMI output becomes distorted, but only through the HDMI port, the onboard sound will still work. There is also a delay sometimes, where if I click to skip an ad for example, the video for the ad will stop right away, but the audio for it will continue for a few more seconds

I hate Microsoft and their privacy intrusion. However, if we want the free software message to be heard we should be honest in describing what is wrong with the non free alternatives. This is why facts are important. You can activate windows without a Microsoft account. You are not required to provide Microsoft with any information on activation. They have personalization options locked because Windows is not free of charge. If you use Windows without buying it you should expect some features to be missing since Microsoft allows you to install it just for testing purposes. The fact that these options are behind a paywall is not a bad thing, after all free software does not necessarily mean free of charge software. We have free software that is behind a paywall in the Linux universe too, look at RHEL and SUSE, I don't see people criticizing them for not being free of charge. Again that does not mean that Windows is a good OS. From the privacy standpoint is a very bad and intrusive operating system. But if we want to be taken seriously we should criticize where criticism is due. Windows spies on you, regardless if you activate it or not. If you use non open source software you are basically running some code on your machine that under the hood could do anything, because you don't exactly know what it does. As an analogy, if you have a car and you take it to a service, you wouldn't want the mechanic putting some unspecified liquid in your car without you knowing what is actually is. Computers are the same.
To me this kind of discussions are not helping because by saying: "Windows is bad because you cant personalize it without paying for it" does not correlate with FOSS. Microsoft could call you a hypocrite for criticizing them for not having a free of charge system (which is what the subject is about at the beginning of this video) and not Red Hat or SUSE.
This type of content does not help people that use Windows move to Linux. It is just a show for the people that already use Linux and hate Windows.
I think people who choose to tie themselves down by using an operating system that violates your privacy and limits what you can do with your desktop are stupid. People who are stupid choose to be stupid. And windows users are a prime example of it.

@Urip Andono True for some software. But: noob distros like Linux Mint and also vanilla Debian are very well tested and curated. Talking to someone coming from Windows, this is what can reasonably be expected, since they most probably have little interest in experimental or developers stuff that will brick their system. This is why in a comparison between Windows and Linux you can reasonably sag that.

This is why I loved Win XP. You could customize it to your heart's content. I had my own boot screen; you know there where it normally shows windows a logo While loading windows. I put a photo of me there where it said my name under it, so if I lost my Laptop, I could easily prove it was mine, or people could see who it belonged to, and my login screen was customized, and all the Windows shit program and driver I didn't need installed and turn off. Windows XP had as much Freedom as Linux have, but after that, they took that Freedom from you with every version of windows little by little till what you know as Windows 11, and Windows 11 is made to make you believe you have Freedom and security, but in reality, you are giving them everything from your soul. That's is also one of the reasons I use Linux, and I feel like games are beginning to run worse on windows, and all old games cant be run not without a lot of work, if at all. Where on Linux in Wine, that's not a problem.
huge difference that slightly burned me about filesystems is that Linux allows you to use more symbols in your file names (I dont remember exactly, question marks or slashes, semicolons or something) when I had to backup my linux dosuments on windows partition...I couldn't save some of them, because I named files in the..."too much freedom" operating system... Now I am a little more careful, but then again....I dont use Windows anymore, but in order to have compatible and backupable files (online for example) I think it is a little better to use more common filenames...
I agree with most of this but you did miss a thing because Windows is a paid OS not free , and activation is just a CD key which you can easily get online or in a physical store without giving over any of your personal information. I'm sure as I watch on true factual things will be said but like yeah . "There's no reason microsoft needs my information to let me move the panel" - they don't and they don't ask for it. The deal is it's a paid os and you can run it for free with no customization. Either way no personal info is needed to activate it. We wouldn't be upset if a free Tesla showed up in our backyard for us but you need to pay for it to customize it.

Windows might be stable in the server market, but it makes up a very few percent of it, just like desktop users - only a few percent of them are on GNU\Linux
Hmm anyone heard of *cough* rocket dock, open shell, taskbar x, clock, powertoys. Calling windows not customize is not true. In fact, having to use the terminal with everything is just real hard and MS-DOS of all things has easier to use commands. Calling Linux as a full gui os is wrong because it really is like windows 1.0, a graphical shell.
Windows Activation is not giving them your data and creating account.
Windows Activation is an anti-piracy method from Microsoft which makes sure every copy of Windows OS that’s installed on a computer is genuine. You need buy and enter activation key to make your copy of Windows legal.

@Linden Reaper you should be able to, just don't connect to wifi or ethernet, similar to windows 10. And it's no trouble switching to Firefox. Just don't use the search links on the start menu or use widgets. Assume anything made directly by Microsoft will attempt to stay with Microsoft without hurdles

So nice! Brilliant! There is a problem though, with games. Most of AAA games are still being written for Win. But Linux is eventually the inevitable future for everyone.
The absolut only Tool I am still missing for Linux is Microsoft Visio. That Program is brilliant and nothing native on Linux (tried a whole bunch) has been able to replace it. Only reason I still run a Microsft Win10 VM on my Linux machines!

One weird thing I've noticed about program availability on Linux: I always assumed that would be the case. Yet when I moved over, within half a year I'm just missing programs on Windows! Most of those "programs that run on Windows not Linux" are proprietary garbage that just install unnecessary daemons on Windows that over time slow the system to a crawl. Ofcourse there are a few exceptions: I have a license for Windows Home because my job requires me to use Excel (I find Libreoffice to be superior except that I need some plugin to work with -CDS- Dataverse that's to my knowledge only available for Excel), and I would like to install MS Flight Simulator if I had the hardware (I ran X-plane in the past that has remarkably good Linux support and possibly better flying characteristics, but the new MSFS has insane graphics). Still, with Steam Deck coming out, I think MS is about to lose it's gamer monopoly, and so perhaps 2022 will finally be the Year of the Linux Desktop :D

It ain't just the steam deck mate. People are ripping over microsoft for win11's graphics requirements, and of course there's chromeOS making a big splash. and with companies like Redhat becoming more and more common, we may well be the next big thing!

@@monalisaray2616 yeah, but the online versions of Word and Excel are barely usable compared to the real thing or Libreoffice. The only reason I run Excel at all is because of the Dataverse plugin, which does not work in the online Excel version.

I kept my toe in the other water for a long time, so that I could game with my friends. I still can boot a windows if I really need it, but something strange happened: I became addicted to freedom. I can't boot windows without feeling disgusted anymore.
I imagine that this is what it feels like to get away from an abusive relationship. I feel true happiness from knowing they can't control me anymore.
The only reason I haven't completely killed windows is because my friends like League of Legends, and that one is very hard to run on linux. I know it can be done, but every time lol updates it will break the hacky solution.

The reason why I am running windows 10 is, that I can't undervolt my nvidia graphicscard under linux.
Also I found myself wasting a lot of time, customizing things like window manager in linux, instead of just using, what is already pretty good in windows.
Windows 10 is really stable for me (at least on my system). I have my gaming rig running 24/7 because of mining since January, and didn't have one single failure.
