God...the shredded vocal chords...the insane bass tone, his ripping out the bass line like a boss...this is vintage live Mccartney .. no words do justice to how great he was in his prime...just wow..
People who give a near 80 year old McCartney shit for his voice circa 2021 need to watch this on a loop for 24 hours. THIS is why his voice is not what it was; general aging aside, Macca put 100% into his live vocals all through out the 70's and into the 90's-2000's era concerts. He was never trained professionally and infamously refused to drink water on stage up until a couple years ago. He learned to belt in Hamburg and never laid back, for better or worse. I personally respect the hell out of it, especially as a musician who's seen "trained" singers half ass it & bluff their way through songs they shouldn't have been singing . The '79 "Coming Up" performances are killer, plus he went full out on the octave leaps on the bass, taking the riff all the way up the E string, where in later tours he stuck to a fifth position single note climb. I get it; this singing while doing disco octaves is very difficult to do cleanly, especially when he's jumping around grooving while playing. Just a stunning performance. He moved on from it but the era he played the Yamaha BB1200 sounded so good; of course I love the Hofner and especially the Rick but man, that sharp, thuddy warm tone he got from the Yamaha was so cool. He used it a bit on Press to Play but after that I have never seen him with it. Great bass.
Paul ALWAYS gave 200% of himself to every crowd every time--Paul suffered for his craft so could win. I realize his voice is gone now but he's 80 years old and I think it's well-established how many millions of people he's made happy over the last 60 years. Thank you, Sir Paul
Absolutely! And yeah....that Yamaha! I love his tone on it w/pick. This was probably the only time he was playing a bass with roundwounds. (with the tone knob rolled down) I saw something where he auctioned it off for a charity. The one recording I cannot find a definitive answer on....what bass did he use on "Goodnight Tonight"? In the video he is playing the Yamaha. Of course it's lip-sync to the track. The bass tone is just uniquely different to any other McCartney track.
Me toooooo. Denny and Linda were marvelous backing vocals. People were so mean to Linda about her voice but her backing vocals made everything Paul did better--that feminine touch! I really miss her
John Lennon cites Coming Up and the B-52’s Rock Lobster as the two songs that persuaded him to return to the studio in early 1980. John actually preferred the LP version of Coming Up to the live version that the general public preferred.
Also pretty hard to do since Paul played all instruments on original and playing one on one is hard to reproduce with multiple people. But they did well.
Paul can sing in so many styles it's incredible. He was unstoppable. I loved this song when it hit #1 when I was younger. Sir Paul has so many great songs after the peoples and was always the one that stood out in concerts.

He is hoarse and due to overuse/straining and singing over his register. There are alot of singers out there that fly as a singer and hit the notes with less effort....
If Macca didn't get arrested in Japan, imagine he & Wings would had brought this line up to America around The Summer Of 1980. It would had been a big tour.
This is my favorite incarnation of Wings. Although it was short-lived, they were pretty tight and sounded great. Paul was at his best from around '78 to '82.

Became a huge fan of mccartney/wings because of the live version of this song! It went to number one in the US! Then Wings were no more. What a way to end.
@@keithroberts4952 That was a great move by Columbia record to air the live version in the US. The number one spot showed they were right about it. The live version from Glasgow (not this one, but similar) was the U.S. single and the one off McCartney II was the British single. Lennon was living in NYC so he heard the live version, the one that supposedly inspired him to make Double Fantasy.
