    Mike - great review. It helped me choose the Sailor 1911 Music Nib (mine is the mid size in Ivory with gold trim) over the others. I wanted a very smooth wet Stub and for me this is PERFECTION. Keep up the excellent work.

    Don’t forget that the Sailor Music nib can write thinly when held upside down (tines up). Which makes it great for writing slurs, ties and accent notes beneath the staff. This also makes it more versatile than the others.

    Thanks for this comparison/shootout--I've been eyeing a Music nib lately, so this is very timely! One fun fact no one has corrected you on so far (I hope): the inscription on the Platinum nib is meant to evoke Mt. Fuji--and the #3776 series is so-named because that is the height of Mt. Fuji (in meters, of course).

    I wonder if there is any variation in the Platinum music nibs? I purchased the Platinum and the Pilot. The Pilot was great, but I found the Platinum way too thick, with very little difference in the thicks and thins. Although it was extremely smooth and forgiving, it had a very rounded writing surface. I ground it into a crisp italic, and it is now one of my favorite italic nibs.

    like i said on figboot, i got a pilot custom 74 with a music nib (same as the one in this video, it's 14k) and it had a big problem partial and hard starting, with one tine failing to start. i had to adjust the tines and then smooth them on micro mesh, but the result is flawless, smooth, and wet with a ton of flex, able to go up to 2mm from its 1-1.1mm base. very soft and springy and a delight to use, along with the pilot con70 awesome converter.
    at $85 on amazon, i highly recommend it if you're willing to smooth it a bit. i much prefer its softness to the nail hardness of the 3776, which I'll be buying a standard soft fine for.

    • @popnsplat
      @popnsplat 7 років тому

      Mike Matteson I'd personally not suggest it as a first gold nib at that price, for that I'd suggest a 74 or 3776 with a soft fine, and if anyone is interested in the possible performance of a music nib in daily use, to get the goulet 1.1 stub, which is what sold me on the music (the goulet 1.1 in a noodlers ahab demonstrator is still my favorite pen for daily use) and then I'd still recommend the pilot music over the others for the high degree of softness, spring, and once you spend a few minutes tuning it to write at your hand position, it essentially works as a soft semi flex stub. but like i said, i think an out of the box pen should not need tuning, and unless you plan on only writing music, the pilot music nib really feels unpleasant without some very basic tweaking, so I'd point people to the platinum 3776 in soft fine or pilot 74 in the same for the $75- $80 gold nib.

    I bought a Sailor pen with a Music Nib but it was a real mistake for me as it was just a broad nib with a lot of material ( Ball) on that nib. It was moreover a wet broad nib although called a music. It was also slippery as people call them buttery nib that I hate. I like nibs with feedback which gives me a sense of feeling to my writing. So that pen is doing nothing but waiting to get grind by somebody. I already tried to do it myself but I thought to let someone who knows the trick to do.

    Thank you for this! Way back around 1980 or so, I had an inexpensive two-tine music nib that I loved using. I even used it for writing music (I majored in music at university). I can't remember the brand of pen, and I've been searching in vain for a pen that matched the line produced by that pen. The Franklin Christoff is the closest I've seen to that nib.

  • @mwmcbroom
    @mwmcbroom 5 років тому

    Cool topic. I've wondered how my old music nibbed pen stacks up. It appears, pretty well. I have an old Osmiroid model 75 with an Osmiroid B3 nib that has two cuts and three tines. It's definitely an italic style nib, but it is very smooth and puts down a reasonably wet line. This is apparently an older Osmiroid. I have another "old" Osmiroid (I bought a pile of calligraphic pens and these were in the pile), but it takes much bigger nibs. I have three calligraphic nibs that fit that pen, but none of them are music nibs, although they will work well enough for music. That pen has no markings on its barrel, it just says "Osmiroid" on the clip only.
    My old Osmiroid 75's B3 nib is gold and pretty stiff. According to my dial calipers, it is 0.068" (1.72mm) wide at the tip, so it is of what I would say is a generous size. I'm a musician and I read and write music, so this pen does get use. It works very well for its intended purpose. It works well for italic calligraphy too.
    Of your four pens, I liked the Franklin-Christoph the best. I found the other three to be mediocre. They all seem to write the same to me.
    Finally, I have a question: why is it necessary that a music nib have 3 tines? I mean, it seems to me that a good calligraphic nib would do just as good of a job. What am I missing?

    I don't write music but love writing with nibs that show significant line variation. I mostly own Franklin and Crostophe nibs and love them but recently bought both a Platinum and a Sailor music nibbed pens. Neither show the line variation that the F&C pens do but the reason that I'm writing is that my Sailor has a very small "sweet spot" in comparison to the other pens. I'm curious if you (or anyone else) has noticed this. Neither my Platinum nor Sailor have been written with much, so perhaps they need breaking in.

    • @inkdependence
      @inkdependence  3 роки тому +1

    Hi. I’m a little confused on the way to hold a fountain pen now. I was always tops to hold it the way you are holding all the music nibs. With the nib going vertically. The thin going up and down so sideways looking. But then, a few years ago I began watching fountain pen reviews and everyone holds the nib with the thick part of a stub, let’s say, with the thick part horizontally. So which was is correct? Does it change depending on the nib type? Say a simple rounded nib compared to a stub or music nib? Or even an architect nib? I would really love your opinion. Or if there are no rules at all? It seems with a music nib it has to be held with the thinnest part of the tines going vertically to write the notes. But what about all the other styles of nib? I look forward to hearing back from you soon. Thank you and I enjoyed your video. @MikeMatteson

    • @inkdependence
      @inkdependence  2 роки тому

      I'm glad you enjoyed the video. I think most people hold a fountain pen closer to 45 degrees. Most nibs aren't designed to work at a 90 degree vertical. The tipping is ground under the nib, and not on its point. An architect nib, for example, will only make a super thin line at 90 degrees.

    A couple of days ago I finally received my first music nib in my first 3776. While it's a consistent writer, honestly it has not set my pulse racing so far. To write music, as I just said on the companion Figboot video, I get better results with a BB Pilot Plumix, which is basically a non-tipped stub. The aesthetics of the 3776 don't inspire me and the nib also leaves me lukewarm so far. I will be patient with it and will give it time to try and grow on me, but I currently can't see myself racing over to buy any more 3776s or Platinum music nibs. That's what makes this hobby so interesting though; the diversity of opinions, tastes and experiences.

      Oh yeah. The 823 is extremely hard to beat. It’s an awesome pen in so many ways. You can’t get the Pilot music nib in it, as far as I know. Maybe there’s a Japanese store that sells them like that, and I’m not sure about that.

      @@inkdependence This 823 has even displaced my Elite/E95S and my Lamy 2000, something I honestly didn't expect to happen. I'm going to have to keep pens like those in my rotation, force myself consciously to use them, because otherwise I'm going to just use the 823 until I've worn the nib all the way down to the feed. It's THAT alluring. Back on topic though, I was very intentional about this purchase and in terms of the 3776, this was specifically so I could experience a proper music nib. Because I've now done that, I don't regret the decision. There will always be things I buy that delight and exceed my expectations, others that underwhelm me. Well, the pen is made of aluminum. It's just the section that is plastic. It comes in a ton of different colors, actually, and all of them look pretty slick. I've been using this pen for about a week now (I totally forgot to make the video public!), and the nib is really nice. Very smooth, very nice flow. Neither too wet nor too dry. The only thing about it is that it's pretty narrow. Otherwise, I'm really liking it. $50 isn't exactly cheap, but it's not anywhere near the top end of the market. Really it's in the same range as many of the TWSBI, Lamy, and Faber-Castell pens.

    Cool nib. But it's just like a stub.

    This is very useful Mike, thank you. I'm sorry I gotta say this: can you learn to write properly? I mean you've been in this community quite some time but I'm kinda dizzy to see your handwriting and the way you write each pen in one page not orderly arranged makes me cringe a lot.

    I don't like music nibs, too unpractical. And a waste of money on gold for aesthetics.. I will take a good steel nib over these any time.

    Hey Mike, I'm a musician and I'd like to buy a Franklin music nib, but I cannot seem to find them on-line.
