Jerry west was one of the best ever to do it.
Jerry West should be the face of the NBA forever. True Legend.
If they replace Jerry West on the logo, make it Kareem Abdul-Jabbar shooting a skyhook. Make if a close up of his face, and leave the goggles on. People forget the goggles, which were protective. He had suffered a corneal abrasions. It was a legitimate.
Jerry West .... a great talent, a great sportsmen, a fierce competitor, and his legacy as one of the greats of the game will live on forevet.🏀
Bobby Knight identified Steph Curry as an all time great player in college when Steph was playing for Davidson. Knight wasnt so enamored with how great a shooter Steph was but instead pointed out Steph's court awareness. I believe he called Steph the best passer in college basketball.
He also said Jordan was the best player he'd ever seen when coaching him in the 84 olympics, BEFORE he'd scored an NBA point. True genius.
@@andrethegiant2877 “We need a Center”………”Well then draft MJ and play HIM at the Center position.”
He also coached against Kevin Durant once while he was at Texas Tech and immediately calle him the best player in the country.
The incoming 1974-75 season legendary Indiana point guard Quinn Buckner asked his coach about “this Bird fellow” who was heavily recruited by Louisville but wanted to go to Kentucky and was told by Kentucky head coach Joe B. Hall “You’re too slow to ever wear a Kentucky uniform”. Bird committed to Indiana. Knight told Buckner “He’s the greatest Highschool basketball player I’ve ever seen.”. At the time Bird was an unknown from Springs Valley, French Lick Indiana. He was not heavily recruited. At that time he was only 6-5 inches tall. Knight never praised players who hadn’t yet done anything. Look at the player Bird went on to become in college. Look at the player Jordan went on to become in the NBA. Also to note, when Bob Knight said that Damon Bailey was the best 8th grader he’d ever seen Bailey went on to become the most prolific scorer in Indiana basketball history and took his team to 3 final fours and a state championship back when every team in the state competed for the championship and there weren’t division classes. He still holds the scoring record. Those are the only 3 players I know of that Knight either publicly or privately told anyone that they were special talents before they did anything in at the next level whether it be Highschool, College, or Pro. Just goes to show you his basketball insight and intellect. I remember in 1983 (?) when Jim Valvano and his Wolfpack was facing the Houston Cougars who had Akeem Olajuwon and Clyde Drexler and a deeply talented team. Nobody picked NC State to win…EXCEPT KNIGHT. Knight said they’re playing better as a team. Then Knight went into how State could win using a certain strategy. What he laid out was EXACTLY what State did and accomplished one of the biggest upsets in NCAA national championship history. I’m not saying Valvano heard or saw what Knight said and ditched his own plans for Knight’s. I’m sure Valvano figured it out and knew how to expose some weaknesses in the Cougar game. But, what I’m saying is Knight picked State and they played exactly the way he said they needed to. Like Jerry West said, “He was a basketball genius, by the way.”. Like Bobby Fischer in chess, Knight was very misunderstood, very interesting, very controversial, very intellectually gifted, and driven to the point of near obsession. He moved to the beat of his own drum because he was the only one who could hear it. I remember times where his teams could win by 40 points and Knight being disappointed in how they played.
I trust Jerry West knowledge of basketball. Even though I hate the Lakers (Warriors fan), Jerry West is up there among the greatest.
I agree with Bobby -- Jerry was one the greatest NBA players, his game was so deep, I loved watching him play.
@creepshow I loved watching him play the game of basketball. I loved watching a lot of players who didn't beat the Celts back then. I loved watching Billy Cunningham of the Sixers and lots really lots of others. Jerry was great and it was great to see him close up. He has long arms, big hands, and he could really elevate. The Big O and Jerry.
Knight also said that Jordan was the greatest player he ever seen before MJ even played a single game in the NBA.
So you don't believe Jerry West? Man you Michael Jordan fans really are the worst sports fans of all time. You people only go by people who pick Michael Jordan and you want to remind everyone when ever people pick Michael Jordan. @@blueblur2273
@@theuniversegalaxynba There's no such thing as the GOAT in the NBA. It's all opinion. Different eras. Different rules. Different medical and shoe technology. Different travel. I have seen all but Mikan play. I will say that Wilt is the most DOMINANT to ever play. Wilt was the strongest and was very skilled. Elgin was the first superstar that couldn't be stopped. Well-rounded game and very exciting. West is one of top four guards to ever play. He could do it all, on both ends of the court, and he was one of the greatest clutch players ever. The next thing I want you to know is the most important. In the history of the NBA, there are THREE players who lifted their entire teams' play more than any other three. In no particular order, they are Bill Russell, Larry Bird, and Magic Johnson. These three are the greatest WINNERS of the NBA. Mind you, I've never been a Celtics fan. Far from it. The 60s Celtics had lineups of good players, but NO WAY they win all those titles without Russell. I believe that Magic extended Kareem's career by 5 years, simply because of how he blended with Kareem and the Lakers. MJ was great, but he never one a title without a great supporting cast. The Celtics dominated the Bulls for years with Larry Bird orchestrating his team. Teams win titles, not individuals. Wilt rarely had a great supporting cast around him. Why are the 1967 Sixers considered one of the all time best teams? Because Wilt finally got to play with a great supporting cast, and that year, his team thoroughly dominated the great Celtics in 5 games. Wilt finally played on a Lakers team in 1972 that meshed well as a unit, and they, too, are considered as one of the all time best teams. An honorable mention for a great TEAM was the 69-70 NY Knicks. They were beautiful to watch, they had a deep bench, and they played team ball every single night. They were beautiflully balanced and smart. You've learned a lot, but maybe you can pick up a nugget or two from seniors like me who've watched all of them play. Peace.
When Elgin Baylor was drafted by the Lakers the team immediately changed from losers to winners. He was only about 6'5" but was one of the great inside players ever. In the post he was an airborne acrobat. Many of the dazzling inside moves smaller players use today date back to Elgin. In addition, Elgin would usually guard the best scoring forward on the opposition; it didn't matter if the guy was a quick perimeter player or a big inside bruiser.
People compare LBJ's game to Magic's and MJ's, but LeBron is basically Elgin Bayor 2.0.
Baylor was big enough to play the position. I consider him a power forward although he usually is designated as a small forward.
@@anonymike8280 Elgin, like Larry and LeBron, could play both F spots.
I give Elgin credit. My first NBA game: Jerry, Elgin, and Wilt versus Royals. Early in the 60s seeing Elgin in "Sport Magazine," and the older kids said, "Pay attention." Chick was the greatest announcer. My brother met Bob Knight fishing in Siberia. Knight said the two greatest Big Ten players he saw was a tie between Magic Johnson and Jerry Lucas. If Lucas had played in the 3-point era, he would have been one of the NBA's best big men ever, with quite a memory.
I just wish he was back running the Lakers.Great basketball mind and talent evaluater.
Bobby Knight 2017 one of his final interviews the question was given him,..."Is Lebron James the best basketball player you ever seen?"
Bobby Knight: "No no. The best guy to ever play the game is Michael Jordan, don't even think of anybody else.
Interviewer: "Not even close?"
Bobby Knight: "Not even close. He was just better than everybody else. He was smarter, tougher, and he won more......"
Typical Michael Jordan fan. Pick and choose what ever you want to go by. You Micahel Jordan fans are seriously the worst sports fans.
@@landscaping3716 man I've been reading some of the things you write, and you we don't seem like a smart person. And you are a great example of why he labels Michael Jordan fan as the worst sports fans. I'm any clearly explain why he wrote what he wrote, and you ignored it, and you asked him if he is denying what Bobby Knight said? Why do you Michael Jordan fans just believe ridiculous things in your mind? There's also other things wrong with what you first wrote and what you wrote in your follow-up, but I'm not going to get into details about this because I know it's pointless. And by the way before you write anything, remember he invited you to go on his program to show him your facts on whatever you disagree on, and you are scared to go on his program to show him your facts on whatever you disagree on.
He was one of the great one's!! R.I.P.
Bobby Knight will always be my favorite basketball coach. I'm grateful for being a Hoosier and the last undefeated Division I college basketball team to win the championship is the 1976 Indiana Hoosiers.
Nice seeing Chick Hearn get his due. I grew up in SoCal, and though I was never a Lakers fan, I loved Chick Hearn. Best play-by-play basketball announcer I ever heard.
I was born in LA/1950, my dad's company had season tickets to the Lakers & Dodgers. I went to many games. Listened to Chick Hearn & Vince Scully religiously. When I realized I wasn't going to be a point guard for the Lakers or a centerfielder for the Dodgers I wanted be like Chick & Vince. 1 problem, mic fright 😂😁
Great to see Mr. Clutch still alive and kicking 😎👍
An interviewer that lets the guy talk. Nice.
Wilt Chamberlain the 7”1 chameleon. Averaged 30 and and 23 for his career. 50 years later still the most dominant player ever. The 67 76er’s still one of the most dominant NBA teams ever. And you can put it backwards and still one of the most dominant teams ever.
@@LOL-ro9ef Wilt scored just as much as Jordan, he was also 4 times the rebounder and shot blocker Jordan was, Jordan played against Grocery Baggers and Grabage Men in a watered down era of 6 expansion teams, Wilt played Bill Russell and Kareem in 171 games regular season and playoffs combined, Wilt never gambled on defense and he never quit the game he loves.
Wilt>>>>>Jordan.
Wilt sucked stfu with that fucking shit couldn't shoot barely dribble dude played school teachers seriously Jordan would make wilt look ragged
Wilt is arguably the most dominant big man ever and maybe even the best passing center ever having led the NBA in assists one year as well as being a dominant rebounder and outlet passer. The Big Dipper still has over 60 records on the books.
@uʍop ǝpᴉsdn are you an idiot?? Wilt was known to be a quitter and hard to coach. Learn your fact first boy.
@@dynamic6645 Wilt is The GOAT
The great JW and an outstanding interviewer.
When the Greatest Laker of All Time speaks, listen and absorb his wisdom. It's a crying shame The Lakers stopped listening, and now they're paying greatly for it.
@Cee Jay you must be a youngster, you don't have the comprehension to see beyond greatness ON the court. Kobe was only ONE of MANY Truly Great and Legendary players ON the court, but what Laker has done more for the Game of Basketball itself than Jerry West? Has any other player in HISTORY been designated as the NBA'S LOGO?? Youth is so short sighted and unknowledgeable of History.
@@jameschan9634 I'm not a youngster & I'm a Laker fan, he's not the "Greatest Laker of All Time". Calling him the most important works, the greatest title falls to the man who started it all George Mikan. Now the best Lakers in terms of play with the team are 1.) Kareem, 2.) Baylor, 3.) West, 4.) Magic, 5.) Shaq.
@@johnhenry2903 All great, no doubt, very few can even be spoken of in the same sentence with all who you mentioned....BUT....Magic is the only one who made EVERY teammate a better player. He was the only one who MADE the game FUN for ALL of his teammates, and he is the ONLY player in history who could win with whoever his teammates are. And Magic would be my first pick in an all time draft. Having said that, Jerry West's accomplishments are UNPARALLELED, NO ONE did more, overall, to make the Lakers great, to make them perennial winners. And, no one that great can match The LOGO's humbleness.
Your opinion is respected, your selections respectable. I do question your inclusion of Elgin, especially at #2. Great player, no doubt, but in an era considered prehistoric. (uhh...which makes Mikan a Tyrannasaurus), Did Baylor ever bring a title to LA???
And you didn't even mention Kobe. YOU are the dinosaur.
@@jameschan9634 Mikan is the "greatest" because he was the league's 1st superstar and the tone setter for the franchise by being almost singlehandedly responsible for the 1st 5 of the franchise's titles. As for Jerry West, as great as his game was what he did off the court had far more impact. Hence, he's the most IMPORTANT Laker of all time. Now regarding my list of best players in a Laker uniform;
1. Elgin Baylor was the NBA's 1st Dr. J & Jordan. Every single one of his peers, including Jerry West, remained in awe of his ability on the court and pointed to him as the best non-center in league history.
2. Magic was an all-time great, but as an individual player he wasn't Kareem, Baylor or West. We can debate that til the cows come home, but the reason why the Lakers started tapering off enough for a thankful gift call away from the Pistons threepeating was the fact Kareem finally aged out & retired. There's only one other PG I would take over Magic in NBA history and that's the Big O so it's not a slight against him.
3. Regarding Kobe, Shaq was the man who drove those first three titles. And once Kobe helped Shaq out the door the franchise collapsed into mediocrity with a temperamental guy running the show who literally quit in games whenever he was criticized. To Kobe's credit he matured somewhat, but after Jerry's last gift to the Lakers led to the last two titles once again Kobe was at the lead of a collapsing franchise. While for all except one other franchise this would be considered a shoulder-shrug exercise, but the Lakers deep & rich history of elite talent so it becomes a differentiator.
That being said, if another Laker fan has a different order or list of players more power to them.
@@jameschan9634 2 reasons why Kobe won titles Shaq and pay.
Jerry West was my favorite basketball player ever. When we were kids, we all copied his jump shot form. Bobby Knight flew in to my city back in the day to give a coaching clinic. I learned so much. I agree with Jerry West that Bobby Knight was a coaching genius.
I could mimic some of the shots of the greats, but I never could get West's jump shot right.
@@watchmanonthewall14 Haha. Yes, I said "we all copied his jump shot form." I should have said "we all TRIED to copy his jump shot form." 😀
I AGREE W/ THE GENERAL / THE LOGO IS THE GREATEST / RIP #44
Just to remind you, Jerry West is almost the same age as Wilt Chamberlain
We have had too many greats. They are All on a pedestal in my book. LEGENDS,DIFFERENT ERA'S OF THE GAME.
West may not of been the greatest player but undoubtedly the best Basketball Person of all time.
I guess Knight threw those kind of accolades around like pennies given his on camera comments describing Jordan as the best basketball player he ever saw. Of course, this was before MJ entered the NBA….
No, he didn't say Bobby Knight used to pick him. I know you just can't accept that he doesn't clearly pick him. This is a great example of why you Michael Jordan fans are the worst sports fans of all time.
Forgot about Larry legend again!....
He was the greatest until MJ came along. Ask Bobby Knight..
This is in your mind. And you want it to be true. And you did a great job of ignoring what was in the video then.
You probably could argue about the greatest basketball player, even though I would probably say Jordan was probably the best. You couldn’t argue who was greatest basketball announcer, Chick Hearn was the greatest by a mile!

Here it is in one word, honest.
I would think Bobby Knight was a BB genius if he called ME the greatest player ever too
It was his coaching ability he was referring to. His antics aside, Bobby Knight would run circles around many of the great coaches. The only problem was he would often let you know that during the process of bullying anyone he could.

This is how Michael Jordan fans are folks. They are the worst sports fans. And of course this guy is scared to go on my program to show me there facts on what ever they disagree on.
Magic Johnson is the greatest basketball player ever. And I know basketball.
You can't get a honest opinion on who this guy thinks is great are the greatest because he is stuck on who treats him nice and goes out to dinner with him if you don't do those things he isn't going to consider you great he is just like the media
West Virginia legend we love him.
He’s awesome bro. Don’t hate . One of the all time greats.
So, MJ goes out to dinner with Bobby Knight even before MJ turned pro?
West was asked what his thoughts were about these players in rapid succession so it's not surprising he answered the way he did because he knew these people.
YES, I agree. Jerry West is a great guy and one of the greatest ever, but it is SO obvious that Jerry West OVER compliments his friends - both as former teammates and those who played under him as a coach or GM. His "basketball" opinions are BIASED and MEANINGLESS.
Who cares what Knight thinks or says. I can tell you this for every 1 player Knight helped he stepped on and demolished 100 others. Coaches like Knight shouldn’t be praised. And anyone who disagrees with me just know (which you should) Knight almost stomped out Larry Birds career the world would never know Bird if it was up to Knight. How many others has he done that too? Coaches like Knight were put on pedestals in the 80s and 90s and had no business being there. Anyone who has had a coach like Knight knows what I’m saying is trues they are absolute NIGHTMARES from a player perspective. Complete opposite of what you want in a coach
Lots of Micahel Jordan fans care that is why they always bring him up then.
Actually just the opposite. The vast majority of his players love him and would have done anything for him. Larry Bird didn't like the big campus and couldn't afford any clothes when he attended IU. He quit before official practice even started.

I bet the Celtics didn't think West was overrated after being voted MVP on a 7 game loss to them. I watched West hit 51 on them and the games were always close. West ran the fast break just beautifully. Overrated? Thought of highly enough to be the logo of the NBA.
