Thailand has Lao ethnic people more than Laos the whole country. Most importantly, Thai is Nationality. Tai-Kadai is language families. Lao is one ethnic in Tai-Kadai.
This is correct. I find it funny all the time how Laotian people always try to force Thai people in Isan to self identity themsleves as Laotian. 99% of Thai people in Isan identity themsleves as Thai and they want nothing to do with Laos and Laotian people. Dishes like Papaya salad, Larb, etc are originated in Isan, Thailand but with such stupid argument that Thai people in Isan are Laotian, so these dishes must come from Laos 😂
Isan Thai people are actually Lao people who were annexed by the Thai government. Isan is a geographically region, however the people speak Lao not Isan.
Hear me out, Isaan is still in Thailand but we can speak both Thai and Isaan (laos) too so we are still Thai people so please dont mixed us up and I am from Khon Kaen still
What Lao people? When the map of Siam was drawn Lao wasn't even a real country. It was a French colony. A territory that Siam lost to the French. You could say That Nort eastern Thai and Lao shared a common ancestry from the Lan Xang kingdom. When the border was drawn, people from one side of the river became Siamese and the other became Lao which is the name given by the French Authority. Back then, people Identified themselves as resident of local kingdoms like Luang Prabang, Vieng Chan, or Champasak. From the other point of view, you could say that Lao people are Thai people who live in the territory that the French took from Siam and decided to become its own country when they got their independence.
I remember going to thai restaurants when i was younger (owned by thais) they didnt have Papaya salad, sticky rice or even laap. Over the years it somehow became a popular and now sold at most thai restaurants even sai oua/sai gok (lao sausages) and NAM KHAO which are all lao dishes! It could be that many of these thai restaurants are owned by Lao so people assume it's thai

the title is such a clickbait and people who are upset about these topic I can already tell that they grew up in the US, neither in Lao or Thailand. You people are literally American! As Thai person one thing I know about Lao people is that they’re very kind hearted and every Thai people know damn well that papaya salad is not real thai food and we wouldn’t even claim that is real thai food or at least it didn’t came from central part of Thailand. It’s all marketing not just history. if you understand why restaurant in USA advertise some of these food toward Americans as Thai food you’ll know. You’d be surprised many Thai restaurants in US also own by Lao people.
Thanks for touching the bases of both countries. As a first gen born Laotian American, I remember we had my parents sponsored a central Thai from Bangkok as an exchange student to continue his studies in California. Mind you, this was 1985 after majority of displaced Lao and Hmongs whom are starting their future in US. He admitted that Papaya Salad was looked down upon because it was meant for poor people, amongst other well known food items as Jew Bong and Laab was one he was told only for "low nannies" to eat. And, there were alot of tv shows from the 1980s in Thailand when it came to showcasing these foods, some guests were either uncomfortable or made comments in the likes of "will I die after eating this?", "I can't eat this because i can't stand the smell of pla rah(fermented fish sauce with crabs)", " this food looks very weird to me", "I thought this is only for taxi drivers and construction laborers to eat only" I find it ironically amusing how cuisine was once down looked upon is now being aggressively approached and slap an "original" label to it.
im partially lao who grew up in the isaan region of thailand. back in the 80s-90s ppl in the central thailand (dominant political ethnic group) used to mentioned the same thing about the food so another version of papaya salad was invented which is called "tam thai". in tam thai you dont put pla ra (fermented fish) in, u add dried shrimps and roasted peanuts the taste is sweeter. and believe it or not, this version is what widely known in the today's world as a thai papaya salad not the one with pla ra.

One of my best friends in middle/high school was Lao. I never turned down an offer when he invited me over to his house because I knew his mother was always cooking some bomb ass food lol. I remember her telling me stories of how the Thai people treated Lao and Hmong really poorly in the refugee camps, some very sad stories that I will never forget.
Esan was Laos. The people still speak Lao and eat and carry the Laotian attitude. There shouldn’t be any argument about it. People think of Thailand when it comes to papaya salad because the image of tourism. The western civilizations experiencing papaya salad at their home countries at Thai restaurants in which the owners are usually Thai esan or Lao descendants. Serving Thai cuisine rather than Lao cuisine. The Lao owners knew and uses the tactic to get customers through the door by advertising serving thai cuisine. Love the content though. Whole Lao was part of Thailand. If Frenxh didn't come, there wouldn't even be Lao country. Laotian people in Lao today speak Thai Essan, not the other way around that Thai Essan people speak Laos from Lao country 😂
It's a classic case of cultures not really having hard borders in the same way governments do. People in the same general area are going to eat the same types of food. Another example would be rendang, which is a dish that's native to Indonesia, Malaysia, and some of the surrounding countries. No one state can claim full ownership of it because the food existed before modern day borders.

It’s a Lao dish. Thailand have 23 million ethnic Lao population and being on of the top tourism powerhouses country while lao have 6-7 million ethnic Lao population. somehow through migration SomTam became staple dish for middle class in BKK. you can easily logically work this out.
It belong to both but more of Esan than Thailand. The type of food that is call "thais" are actually Lao but from Isan/Esan. Back in the 50-60-70 people that go to work in bangkok are from the region. They naturally make and sell them to those that miss the backhome cooking. When the rest of the world see this in Bangkok so naturally they going to call it a Thai food not knowing the history of the region and people. Esan/Isan was populated by Lao speaking people. But today they speak mixed of Thai and Lao. But if you speak to the elder and listen to their music especially MORLAM style music, they sing in Lao. Thai change their name from Siam and the region they didnt carer about, they rename it as ESAN/ISAN. The name change during the time because they need to united to the area. There was rumor and conflict that the region want to break away from Thailand. They give it a name ESAN/ISAN for the Lao speaking area because the people are not Thai but they cannot be Lao because Laos might want it back. And I am tire of Laos being labeled as the most bombed country in the history/world. I wish people stop using that. I dont want Laos to be known as that. Laos is more than that.
Another note, Lao people call papaya salad Tum Mak Hoong not Som Tum or Tum Som. We call it by the fruit is being used. Not by the taste of it. Best papaya salad is Tum Muang Luang from Luang Prabang
You got that wrong, some regions of Laos still call papaya salad "tum som", even some parts of Issan and Northern Thailand. There's even a video in Thai explaining the history of som tum, and it came from the Lao word Tum som. Tum som is more used in Northern Laos than Southern Laos. I can't find the video right now because I can't write in Thai. Thai likes to say certain thing backward, for example, "ping gai (grilled chicken" in Lao, they call "gai ping". "Ping moo (grilled pork), in Lao, "moo ping" in Thai.

In Thailand we have many versions of Som Tam, one of them which we call Thai Som Tam is sweeter and tastes milder than other versions, and it’s mainly only eaten in bangkok
Difference in Thai papaya salad vs lao/isan is Thai versions don’t use fermented fish. Lao/isan make it the same. They also eat sticky rice everyday. Thais rarely eat sticky rice.

So yea a thai person especially from Bangkok with no connection to isan do not eat sticky rice and if they do it’s a rare occasion. Only places that eat sticky rice everyday is Laos and northeastern part of Thailand “isan” which are ethnically lao but now part of Thailand.

I didn't know that papaya comes from the Americas! The spicies of food that was brought from the Americas had such a huge impact on the world! So many food that we eat regularly comes from the Americas like corn, tomatoes & potatoes.
Papaya was first introduced in Asia through the Philippines. Its seeds, along with other native plants from the Americas, were brought by the Spaniards from Mexico through the "Manila Galleon" in the 16th century. In the Philippines, we also call the fruit "papaya" or "kapayas" (the latter is also used in East Malaysia and Brunei), which is the same (or similar) word in Native American languages like Carib and Arawak. From the Philippines, local and Chinese traders may have traded the plant all over Asia through China in the north and Borneo in the south. Also, around the same century, the Portuguese still owned Malacca in West Malaysia. Then from Malacca, the plant reached modern day Thailand, that's why it's called มะละกอ (malako) in Thai, which comes from the name of the place itself "Malacca/Melaka". However, I'm quite unsure about how it reached modern day Isan and Laos, probably they got it either from the Chinese or Vietnamese in the north or from Ayutthaya or Cambodia in the south (most probably the latter since Isan and Lao apparently borrowed the word หุ่ง/ຫຸ່ງ (hung) from Khmer).

Thai and Laos are same race. We came form south China long long time ago. Our ancestors is Tai people and Tai people 's ancestors is Yue people. Now Yue people was known as Chuang people in China.
I had Alot of Cambodia friend They never had this dish until they hang around LAOS people, And Some of my friend married Cambodia women and that's how they learn how to make Papaya salad.

We do have Cambodian Papaya salad and many versions of this type of salad to compliment various meals which proves our history and knowledge of the dish and not just a copycat version. Your Cambodian friends probably don't cook or are probably part Chinese or Vietnamese. If their Cambodian side does not cook, then they wouldn't have authentic Cambodian recipes passed on to them.

It's like some people may like adding pickled carrots to their Italian spaghetti, but Italians would never eat it that way. Chinese people have a specific flavor preference and I'm not surprised your friends had to modify a Cambodian dish to suit their palate. This dish speaks loudly that they are not Cambodian.

The first papaya salad you ate in Thailand at 3:40min is Luang Prabuang style salad and where is Luang Prabuang? Hmmm. Thailand is famous because of issan food and culture.
But Isan doesn't Lao anymore after separated. The food in Isaan was developed by combined with thai food culture and ingredients so the food the invented by Isaan is "Thai Isaan food".

There's so many foods that are marketed as "Thai" in the West, but are of Lao origin. Papaya salad, larb, ping gai, etc. It's so strange how our foods are so loved and well-received, but the word "Lao" is basically derogatory in Thailand, and many Isan people had to leave their Lao identity behind out of shame. The reason why there are 6x more Lao people in Thailand than in Laos is due to the failure of the Lao rebellion in 1828, which led to the Siamese government to forcibly move a majority of the Lao population to the west of the Mekong and to Bangkok to work as slaves. Lao people will fight to have our history and culture be heard and recognized.
You have to also admit that our parents didn't help put our identity out there when they opened a restaurant wherever they settled. They called it a Thai restaurant instead of Lao, but also made some dishes that were from Laos. It was understandable at the time, only Westerners heard of Thailand but not Laos. This should not longer be the case, and I'm proud of our loon Mai generation is putting us out there as Lao food not Thai or shared with Thai.

YES 100% at the feeling “strange at how our foods are so well-loved and received but the word “Lao” is basically derogatory in Thailand” part!!!!!!!!! As a Lao person I [personally] have seen so many Lao/Cambodian culture videos and the ones that don’t mention any similarities with Thai culture, there would be comments saying “Thai people do this too” or something of that nature. The videos I [personally] have seen online of Thai culture, seldom do Thai people *ever* mention similarities with Lao or Khmer culture. As a person who’s in their late 20s, growing up I have definitely have heard my parents talk about how Thai people think they’re better than us. I’ve felt this too. It’s exhausting trying to convince people who don’t want you sitting at their table, and these people expect to be able to sit at yours. We value so many of the same things in our culture yet get little to no respect because we are not a rich country. Like imagine how powerful TLC (Thai/Lao/Cambodian) would be if we all helped each other out and worked together.

Embrace the papaya salad, many cultures has variety style of making papaya salad. Laotian is the original. Recipe green papaya padak, fermented fish umami flavor, garlic, fish sauce, tomato, msg, lime juice, sugar, hot chili pepper, seafoodpaste or raw seafood, sometimes green beans, sometimes vermicelli noodles, sometimes green mango and carrots. Different parts of Laos have their own style because Luang prabang is known to shred the papaya into ribbon thick slices. The real way to slice the papaya is called fwhukk lol Vietnamese also have something similar like mango salad. Thailand original kingdom was Ayutthaya & Siam, but northern parts of Thailand became Issan, taken from Laos land. Thais love to eat very hot spicy & sour mix. they majority of the time, they do not include padak dark fermented fish liquid, but do use fish sauce in bottle into their style salad. Ok, you can also tell the difference between thai isaan compared to Bangkok thai person. If you listen to them talk, the isaan person will say "sap sap" that is Laotian language, when they say "aroydee aroy mak" that is thai language lol no such thang called isaan language it is Laotian language
In the past, people in the northern and Isan (North Eastern in Sanskrit) once referred by people in the central as Laotian. Then, the nationalism happened, and everyone in every corner of Thailand had been told that they are “Thai” by the government. @@hunhoon6283Thai government stopped counting Lao population for the census back in the mid 90s. If they had continued on with accurate census counts, it is estimated the Lao population is actually higher than the Central Thai population, hence why Lao is no longer counted but lumped in the general term as “Tai.” Interestingly enough, all Tai populations (including Lao) always us “Tai” to mean “people of” and ONLY use this terminology to refer to related ethnic/tribal kin folks’ place of origins (never used for other ethnic groups or nationalities)…but yet Central Thais themselves are the only ones who don’t use or understand the concept of “Tai” when referring to themselves. I believe there is a reason for this though (and technology has caught up enough to back some Lao people’s claims that the Central Thais aka the Syam Thais aren’t related to Tai-Lao ethnic tribes at all (originally of course). DNA analysis have shown they are of primarily Mon-Malay origins with recent Southern Chinese admixture. And anyone who understands the linguistics of how languages evolve at all, it is very clear the modern Thai language is a Creole language of some form, a mixture of Tai-Lao, Mon-Khmer and a little of Hakka Chinese.
That's true, I also found the " stole " thing strange. And tbh ,I never associated papaya salad with Thailand or Asia, for that matter .I lived in Malawi as a kid, and we would have it as well. Semi -ripe ones so less sour. I think that in many countries where people have it, they don't really question about it's origins. I'd like to see the Mexican version of this dish. Another thing, if a dish is too spicy/hot, you should never ever drink water ! A piece of bread ,or a few sips of milk, even natural joghurt, is the best way to soothe your mouth. For the de-mining program, Laos is still littered with unexplosed anti-personal ones, I think that they have started to use the giant african rats, which were used in Mozambique and successfully too. Because even today, there's people in Laos who lose a leg, here, life there. The US has the moral obligation to help them.

Hmmm... I have tried both Thai and Laotian style papaya salad. I prefer Thai. I do love Issan/Esan food because it is more garlicky. I think what is really innovative is how Thailand invented Pad Thai for marketing purposes and nation building in the 1930s. Either way, I do love Laotian food as well. In fact, all of SE Asian food is so tasty. Can you do a video on how the Portuguese influenced Korean kimchi? Before the Portuguese brought peppers to Asia, kimchi wasn't red and it wasn't spicy!
U can love what ever u want.. but Papaya salad is original Laos....Thai made it sweet and add on peanut...In Laos there are a lot of variation every chef cook differently..
In Laotian language called thum mak huang. Thum is smash in the mortar pestle, mak huang is vegetable papaya. Thai isaan call it som thum, sour smash/pound mix stir lol . Gotta eat it fresh out the mixing mortar, the papaya is squeeze release flavors at the same time absorb flavors gotta be fresh green papaya crunchy texture. If use the modern style shredder the crunch is lost in the sauce. Is a no no

From my understanding growing up around Laos folks, papaya salad was usually called ຕຳຫມາກຫຸ່ງ (tam mak hoong). My theory is that now more people are saying ຕໍາສົ້ມ (tam som) so Thais will know what it means.
Excellent video and thank you. Since you're not Lao or Thai person, your narrative is based on historical facts of people who cook and consume. Tam Som was and is looked down upon food from real Thai elites. The real Thais eat only imported beef from Japan and Argentina.
I'm Thai-Esan and have visited Laos many times. In my opinion, I think some Laotians like to use monosodium glutamate in their dishes. And then I don't feel much difference between Lao and Isan food.

My thought is food and traditional are something you can’t steal from any other but our neighbors always keep telling the world that we stole things from them when something became to famous, nothing more just proud of ourselves and realize how valuable what we have and what we are. This is a point that could have been made a long time ago, but by now it is the most popular regional cuisine across Thailand. It's the most popular category in Grab and what feels like half of all street food is Isaan now. Likely supported by Isaan people being the biggest migrant group in most places. Granted, it hasn't arrived in many high-end restaurants, but average people hold Isaan food in high regard.

What Lao people? When the map of Siam was drawn Lao wasn't even a real country. It was a French colony. A territory that Siam lost to the French.
You could say That Nort eastern Thai and Lao shared a common ancestry from the Lan Xang kingdom. When the border was drawn, people from one side of the river became Siamese and the other became Lao which is the name given by the French Authority. Back then, people Identified themselves as resident of local kingdoms like Luang Prabang, Vieng Chan, or Champasak.
From the other point of view, you could say that Lao people are Thai people who live in the territory that the French took from Siam and decided to become its own country when they got their independence.
I remember going to thai restaurants when i was younger (owned by thais) they didnt have Papaya salad, sticky rice or even laap. Over the years it somehow became a popular and now sold at most thai restaurants even sai oua/sai gok (lao sausages) and NAM KHAO which are all lao dishes! It could be that many of these thai restaurants are owned by Lao so people assume it's thai

the title is such a clickbait and people who are upset about these topic I can already tell that they grew up in the US, neither in Lao or Thailand. You people are literally American! As Thai person one thing I know about Lao people is that they’re very kind hearted and every Thai people know damn well that papaya salad is not real thai food and we wouldn’t even claim that is real thai food or at least it didn’t came from central part of Thailand. It’s all marketing not just history. if you understand why restaurant in USA advertise some of these food toward Americans as Thai food you’ll know. Thanks for touching the bases of both countries. As a first gen born Laotian American, I remember we had my parents sponsored a central Thai from Bangkok as an exchange student to continue his studies in California. Mind you, this was 1985 after majority of displaced Lao and Hmongs whom are starting their future in US. He admitted that Papaya Salad was looked down upon because it was meant for poor people, amongst other well known food items as Jew Bong and Laab was one he was told only for "low nannies" to eat. And, there were alot of tv shows from the 1980s in Thailand when it came to showcasing these foods, some guests were either uncomfortable or made comments in the likes of "will I die after eating this?", "I can't eat this because i can't stand the smell of pla rah(fermented fish sauce with crabs)", " this food looks very weird to me", "I thought this is only for taxi drivers and construction laborers to eat only"

im partially lao who grew up in the isaan region of thailand. back in the 80s-90s ppl in the central thailand (dominant political ethnic group) used to mentioned the same thing about the food so another version of papaya salad was invented which is called "tam thai". in tam thai you dont put pla ra (fermented fish) in, u add dried shrimps and roasted peanuts the taste is sweeter. and believe it or not, this version is what widely known in the today's world as a thai papaya salad not the one with pla ra.

One of my best friends in middle/high school was Lao. I never turned down an offer when he invited me over to his house because I knew his mother was always cooking some bomb ass food lol. I remember her telling me stories of how the Thai people treated Lao and Hmong really poorly in the refugee camps, some very sad stories that I will never forget.
Esan was Laos. The people still speak Lao and eat and carry the Laotian attitude. There shouldn’t be any argument about it. People think of Thailand when it comes to papaya salad because the image of tourism. The western civilizations experiencing papaya salad at their home countries at Thai restaurants in which the owners are usually Thai esan or Lao descendants. Serving Thai cuisine rather than Lao cuisine. The Lao owners knew and uses the tactic to get customers through the door by advertising serving thai cuisine. Love the content though. Whole Lao was part of Thailand. If Frenxh didn't come, there wouldn't even be Lao country. Laotian people in Lao today speak Thai Essan, not the other way around that Thai Essan people speak Laos from Lao country 😂
It's a classic case of cultures not really having hard borders in the same way governments do. People in the same general area are going to eat the same types of food. Another example would be rendang, which is a dish that's native to Indonesia, Malaysia, and some of the surrounding countries. No one state can claim full ownership of it because the food existed before modern day borders.

It belong to both but more of Esan than Thailand. The type of food that is call "thais" are actually Lao but from Isan/Esan. Back in the 50-60-70 people that go to work in bangkok are from the region. They naturally make and sell them to those that miss the backhome cooking. When the rest of the world see this in Bangkok so naturally they going to call it a Thai food not knowing the history of the region and people. Esan/Isan was populated by Lao speaking people. But today they speak mixed of Thai and Lao. But if you speak to the elder and listen to their music especially MORLAM style music, they sing in Lao. Thai change their name from Siam and the region they didnt carer about, they rename it as ESAN/ISAN. The name change during the time because they need to united to the area. There was rumor and conflict that the region want to break away from Thailand. They give it a name ESAN/ISAN for the Lao speaking area because the people are not Thai but they cannot be Lao because Laos might want it back. And I am tire of Laos being labeled as the most bombed country in the history/world. I wish people stop using that. I dont want Laos to be known as that. Laos is more than that.

Another note, Lao people call papaya salad Tum Mak Hoong not Som Tum or Tum Som. We call it by the fruit is being used. Not by the taste of it.

You got that wrong, some regions of Laos still call papaya salad "tum som", even some parts of Issan and Northern Thailand. There's even a video in Thai explaining the history of som tum, and it came from the Lao word Tum som. Tum som is more used in Northern Laos than Southern Laos. I can't find the video right now because I can't write in Thai. Thai likes to say certain thing backward, for example, "ping gai (grilled chicken" in Lao, they call "gai ping". "Ping moo (grilled pork), in Lao, "moo ping" in Thai.

Papaya was first introduced in Asia through the Philippines. Its seeds, along with other native plants from the Americas, were brought by the Spaniards from Mexico through the "Manila Galleon" in the 16th century. In the Philippines, we also call the fruit "papaya" or "kapayas" (the latter is also used in East Malaysia and Brunei), which is the same (or similar) word in Native American languages like Carib and Arawak. From the Philippines, local and Chinese traders may have traded the plant all over Asia through China in the north and Borneo in the south. Also, around the same century, the Portuguese still owned Malacca in West Malaysia. Then from Malacca, the plant reached modern day Thailand, that's why it's called มะละกอ (malako) in Thai, which comes from the name of the place itself "Malacca/Melaka". However, I'm quite unsure about how it reached modern day Isan and Laos, probably they got it either from the Chinese or Vietnamese in the north or from Ayutthaya or Cambodia in the south (most probably the latter since Isan and Lao apparently borrowed the word หุ่ง/ຫຸ່ງ (hung) from Khmer).
While in peninsula Malaysia the word "Betik" are use to refer a papaya. Which were adopted from arabic "بطيخ" (bateekh) meaning "watermelon".

I had Alot of Cambodia friend They never had this dish until they hang around LAOS people, And Some of my friend married Cambodia women and that's how they learn how to make Papaya salad.

We do have Cambodian Papaya salad and many versions of this type of salad to compliment various meals which proves our history and knowledge of the dish and not just a copycat version. The first papaya salad you ate in Thailand at 3:40min is Luang Prabuang style salad and where is Luang Prabuang? Hmmm. Thailand is famous because of issan food and culture.
But Isan doesn't Lao anymore after separated. The food in Isaan was developed by combined with thai food culture and ingredients so the food the invented by Isaan is "Thai Isaan food".

There's so many foods that are marketed as "Thai" in the West, but are of Lao origin. Papaya salad, larb, ping gai, etc. It's so strange how our foods are so loved and well-received, but the word "Lao" is basically derogatory in Thailand, and many Isan people had to leave their Lao identity behind out of shame. The reason why there are 6x more Lao people in Thailand than in Laos is due to the failure of the Lao rebellion in 1828, which led to the Siamese government to forcibly move a majority of the Lao population to the west of the Mekong and to Bangkok to work as slaves. Lao people will fight to have our history and culture be heard and recognized.
You have to also admit that our parents didn't help put our identity out there when they opened a restaurant wherever they settled. They called it a Thai restaurant instead of Lao, but also made some dishes that were from Laos. It was understandable at the time, only Westerners heard of Thailand but not Laos. This should not longer be the case, and I'm proud of our loon Mai generation is putting us out there as Lao food not Thai or shared with Thai.

YES 100% at the feeling “strange at how our foods are so well-loved and received but the word “Lao” is basically derogatory in Thailand” part!!!!!!!!! As a Lao person I [personally] have seen so many Lao/Cambodian culture videos and the ones that don’t mention any similarities with Thai culture, there would be comments saying “Thai people do this too” or something of that nature. The videos I [personally] have seen online of Thai culture, seldom do Thai people *ever* mention similarities with Lao or Khmer culture. As a person who’s in their late 20s, growing up I have definitely have heard my parents talk about how Thai people think they’re better than us. I’ve felt this too. It’s exhausting trying to convince people who don’t want you sitting at their table, and these people expect to be able to sit at yours. We value so many of the same things in our culture yet get little to no respect because we are not a rich country. Like imagine how powerful TLC (Thai/Lao/Cambodian) would be if we all helped each other out and worked together.

Embrace the papaya salad, many cultures has variety style of making papaya salad. Laotian is the original. Recipe green papaya padak, fermented fish umami flavor, garlic, fish sauce, tomato, msg, lime juice, sugar, hot chili pepper, seafoodpaste or raw seafood, sometimes green beans, sometimes vermicelli noodles, sometimes green mango and carrots. The real way to slice the papaya is called fwhukk lol Vietnamese also have something similar like mango salad. Thailand original kingdom was Ayutthaya & Siam, but northern parts of Thailand became Issan, taken from Laos land. Thais love to eat very hot spicy & sour mix. they majority of the time, they do not include padak dark fermented fish liquid, but do use fish sauce in bottle into their style salad. Ok, you can also tell the difference between thai isaan compared to Bangkok thai person. If you listen to them talk, the isaan person will say "sap sap" that is Laotian language, when they say "aroydee aroy mak" that is thai language lol no such thang called isaan language it is Laotian language

In the past, people in the northern and Isan (North Eastern in Sanskrit) once referred by people in the central as Laotian. Then, the nationalism happened, and everyone in every corner of Thailand had been told that they are “Thai” by the government.

Yeah, the Siamese government wanted to erase the Lao people of Thailand's identity hence why they all just refer to them as Isan now.

If they had continued on with accurate census counts, it is estimated the Lao population is actually higher than the Central Thai population, hence why Lao is no longer counted but lumped in the general term as “Tai.”
Interestingly enough, all Tai populations (including Lao) always us “Tai” to mean “people of” and ONLY use this terminology to refer to related ethnic/tribal kin folks’ place of origins (never used for other ethnic groups or nationalities)…but yet Central Thais themselves are the only ones who don’t use or understand the concept of “Tai” when referring to themselves.
I believe there is a reason for this though (and technology has caught up enough to back some Lao people’s claims that the Central Thais aka the Syam Thais aren’t related to Tai-Lao ethnic tribes at all (originally of course). DNA analysis have shown they are of primarily Mon-Malay origins with recent Southern Chinese admixture. And anyone who understands the linguistics of how languages evolve at all, it is very clear the modern Thai language is a Creole language of some form, a mixture of Tai-Lao, Mon-Khmer and a little of Hakka Chinese.
That's true, I also found the " stole " thing strange. And tbh ,I never associated papaya salad with Thailand or Asia, for that matter .I lived in Malawi as a kid, and we would have it as well. Semi -ripe ones so less sour. I think that in many countries where people have it, they don't really question about it's origins. I'd like to see the Mexican version of this dish. Another thing, if a dish is too spicy/hot, you should never ever drink water ! A piece of bread ,or a few sips of milk, even natural joghurt, is the best way to soothe your mouth. For the de-mining program, Laos is still littered with unexplosed anti-personal ones, I think that they have started to use the giant african rats, which were used in Mozambique and successfully too. Because even today, there's people in Laos who lose a leg, here, life there. The US has the moral obligation to help them.

Hmmm... I have tried both Thai and Laotian style papaya salad. I prefer Thai. I do love Issan/Esan food because it is more garlicky. I think what is really innovative is how Thailand invented Pad Thai for marketing purposes and nation building in the 1930s. Either way, I do love Laotian food as well. In fact, all of SE Asian food is so tasty. Can you do a video on how the Portuguese influenced Korean kimchi? Before the Portuguese brought peppers to Asia, kimchi wasn't red and it wasn't spicy!

Isaan is Lao food mixed with some Thai influences, but across the River, modern Lao food is heavily mixed with Vietnamese and French influences.

In Laotian language called thum mak huang. Thum is smash in the mortar pestle, mak huang is vegetable papaya. Thai isaan call it som thum, sour smash/pound mix stir lol . Gotta eat it fresh out the mixing mortar, the papaya is squeeze release flavors at the same time absorb flavors gotta be fresh green papaya crunchy texture. If use the modern style shredder the crunch is lost in the sauce. Is a no no

From my understanding growing up around Laos folks, papaya salad was usually called ຕຳຫມາກຫຸ່ງ (tam mak hoong). My theory is that now more people are saying ຕໍາສົ້ມ (tam som) so Thais will know what it means.

Excellent video and thank you. Since you're not Lao or Thai person, your narrative is based on historical facts of people who cook and consume. Tam Som was and is looked down upon food from real Thai elites. The real Thais eat only imported beef from Japan and Argentina.

I'm Thai-Esan and have visited Laos many times. In my opinion, I think some Laotians like to use monosodium glutamate in their dishes. And then I don't feel much difference between Lao and Isan food.

you have to understand that there are mainly two version of papaya salad, "tam thai" and "tam lao". and the later invented (tam thai) were a lot more popular to tourists and is the one sold mostly in thai restaurants around the world.

This quality video is about the origin of "Tam Som"; the creator of Channel "Off Menu" did his due diligence, and he was being impartial on his findings of "Tam Som", and I happened to concur with his conclusion. But you just can't accepted the facts, and you just like any typical Thais who only can see negativities about Laos.
And yes, Lao people use thai ingredients for their cooking, but may I remind you Chinese owned Companies make and distribute those products. Lao can produce those ingredients products, but can't produce at current market environments; if you know anything about "Monopoly", but that's another subject.

This is a point that could have been made a long time ago, but by now it is the most popular regional cuisine across Thailand. It's the most popular category in Grab and what feels like half of all street food is Isaan now. Likely supported by Isaan people being the biggest migrant group in most places. Granted, it hasn't arrived in many high-end restaurants, but average people hold Isaan food in high regard.
